Update for 06/16/2011

Here’s an update:

  • We moved more machines out of the “cage” (our ISP) into the Cloud. More money saved!
  • We moved There.com (the web site) to the Cloud (and had some bumps on the way)
  • Put all the new registration code on the QA service
  • Built the “Legacy Avatars Table” which is where we get the clues about your old avatar when you reclaim it.

The upshot is that we still think we’ll make the end of the month for ThereIM, but it will be tight.

Now, for some questions to think about – I’ll put up a little poll later to get your answers. Do NOT indunate the blog with answers please at this time.

As you know we’ve got the process working which will restore your possessions, ignores, and buddies, and, later, virtual property such as houses, PAZs, hoods, lots, etc.

The problem comes with things like Clubs. As you know, we had thousands of clubs, most of them inactive, or with one member (or less).

When we restore you to There, we could restore all your clubs, but we’re not sure that’s the right thing to do:

  • It’s very likely your Club mates won’t be back (yet), so you will find your club kind of lonely
  • People may decide to start new clubs with the members who have returned, plus any new members, which will make the old club even more obsolete.
  • If you’re not the leader of the club, it doesn’t matter how many of your old club mates show up, without the club leader, you’re going to have all kinds of problems. And it’s not possible for us to arbitrarily relinquish club ownership to the member(s) who have returned – you can imagine what kinds of problems that would cause.

So our choices will be (again, please don’t answer yet):

  1. Don’t restore any clubs. Get a fresh start all around
  2. Restore ONLY the Clubs you are the leader of. No additional members will be added to the Club, you’ll have to re-recruit.
  3. Restore ONLY the Clubs you are the leader of, and the members who are also already re-enrolled in There.
  4. Try to restore all Clubs as they were before, except those which were empty or composed entirely of members who have not returned.

The same issue(s) exist for League Rankings. What sense will it be for your to be the #1 Paintballer (well, I guess I should say “#2”, since I am by definition #1) when everyone else below you hasn’t returned (and won’t?). Worse yet, how would it be to be #3, know you’ll never get to #2 because #2 will never come back? The idea of letting people re-compete for standings seems to be fair, on the surface at least.

Please think about these issues, and I’ll put up a WordPress survey later today.

I had a good sized group ” CanadianClub”. So many of the original members had left and it was very hard to weed out non active members. I agree to just start fresh and rebuild groups. The top 10-100 best buggy, hoverboard, paintballer doesn’t mean anything anymore. Clear the stats and let new members create new highmarks. I think it would be a nice. New fresh start to the new World.

Hey Michael I was not going to post this but then I thought I suppose it would be ok to share this information as I found it off a website my self, but according to a company they say “Makena Technologies in Laguna Beach, CA is a private company categorized under Laboratories-Research and Development. Current estimates show this company has an annual revenue of $2.5 to 5 million and employs a staff of approximately 20 to 49. ”

Ignoring every other bit, Can’t 2.5 to 5 million not cover the server costs? Thats if its even true that you earn or at one point did earn that much… If your finding a cheaper way to run it… I thought you would be able to afford it paying for it… but then again these might be old old records.. If you wish to see the website link I got this information off for any reason at all I will add the URL to the bottom, Plus feel free to decline this comment once read if you do not want this information being let out.

  3. #3 by Tigera on 2011.06.22 - 2:51 pm

@Ivan Whitfield I believe it was stated that they most likely wouldn’t let previously banned people back.

My vote was the balance, I think clubs should be restored if their leader comes back, but I think club names should only be reserved for awhile…not forever. My 2nd choice would be to start fresh.

  4. #4 by Cellophane on 2011.06.21 - 1:06 pm

I personally would like to see the clubs begin from scratch. So many of the clubs with 1,000+ members really had only a core of from 25- 200 members. I like the thought of justifying the text of long-winded, fictional paragraphs, metaphorically speaking… πŸ™‚

  5. #5 by Oz on 2011.06.20 - 6:50 pm

Hey Mr Wilson…. Thanks for asking our opinions on what we want in There, but I think the most important thing is just to get There re-opened. I dont know how you put up with all the whining and demands I have read in your blogs the past few months.Sorry, dont mean to offend anyone, just my opinion.Opening is #1. Anything else can be fixed later…….

MW got a quick question…. if someone was banned from there.com before it closed… would you give everybody a chance that was banned to be able to play the new there.com when it opens????? i think its a good idea because i think for the most part alot of ppl that did bad stuff a long time ago hopefuly are better now and they should get the chance to prove it to you if you gave them the chance and i know its not up to me to make the chose but if you could find it in your heart to at least let everybody prove that they will do right and i now you probly now that theres ppl out there that will not change for the better but then you also know that there are ppl that are willing to change and i know for a fact there are many that probly feel the way i feel but plz MW if you would let us show you we are better now and we wont make the mistakes we did again hopefully you understand and if your reading this thank you and hopefully you give us 1 more chance to prove it to you….!!! and good luck on opening there2.com πŸ™‚

  9. #9 by Sara on 2011.06.19 - 12:17 pm

I think MW thought it through with his colleagues and have already determined what they will do. That is why there is no urgency for the survey to get further input. That is clear.

  10. #11 by Justin Dion on 2011.06.19 - 11:51 am

do u know when there will open

  11. #12 by Tigera on 2011.06.19 - 9:11 am

Did the WordPress survey that was mention get posted? I feel like I missed it I dont see where to take it. I’m excited to see There slowly coming back to life. This is Tigera. If anyone remembers me I was the leader of Shopaholic Fashionistas. Depending on what happens with the groups I don’t know who I will see again. I just want all of you to know you are just as welcome to join the new SF as you’ve always been. I’m looking forward to rebuilding the There community with all of you! ❀

I was pleasently surprised and bemused when I came across MW’s blog and the news that There virtual world is making a come back/return to the internet, I was on There virtual world from 22nd June 2007 til the fateful day February 2010. I also used the TherianIM right up to til the server finaly closed about 2 or 3 months later than the virtual worlds servers, It kept me touch with many of my friends who used it and who knew about it. As for me returning to There virtual world when it returns is another question, I would like to return to There virtual world but I’m commited to two other projects which will remain nameless. I do wish There.com and the There virtual world all the success for gambling on a successful return to the virtual world from which it left many people very upset when it closed, I may return to reclaim my account when my nameless projects are done and finnished.

Once again I wish every one on this project all the best for a happy return that so many wished and hoped for to happen.

Sure if your Mother signs an affidavit that says that when she is cooking dinner or busy that you won’t pretend to be your mother playing around in There lol. Or maybe she has an account and you want to give her all of your items? She paid for them anyway right? No harm no foul.

  16. #21 by katelyn! on 2011.06.17 - 8:20 pm

do you know , or can, Myy mom get my account. ?

    • #22 by HighFlier on 2011.06.18 - 9:46 am

I would think so because all acounts can be opend as long as she signs the new terms of service if they remember to change it. The new terms will probably have some statement about not allowing underage minors on your account or something to that effect. If your under 18 you would not want to be caught using it or she could be ban.

    • #23 by jimony on 2011.06.18 - 11:23 am

I don’t know if MW knows your mom or not, but I would assume she is over 18 and hasn’t been banned?

      • #24 by jimony on 2011.06.18 - 2:30 pm

Please ignore my previous response, I read “get my account” as “get an account”.
If your mom registers with your password and email, along with credit card and proof of age of some sort, I don’t see why she couldn’t claim your account, the same as anyone else with an account that they will need to show they are of age.

  17. #25 by Seg_Vio on 2011.06.17 - 8:08 pm

I had a few clubs, and was afiliated with several that had “yard sales” pretty often. When you are a member you get alerts when a event was coming up, and a teleport to the location. I think that the clubs was a great utility for the community.

    • #26 by HighFlier on 2011.06.18 - 9:16 am

This is a good point however, if we go with a fresh start you’ll have to rebuild all the names which got people to your sales at all those yard sale clubs will be empty at least at first void of names for you to spam to get people to your sale site. So you might want to vote to keep all the names. This is what yard sale clubs were, they gave people the ability to spam mostly new members legally without using their own club and getting reported for spamming which happened a lot in There with newer members. Of course they did click to join though didn’t they so it’s their own fault. Yard sales were lots of fun though.

Who was the guy that had huge yard sales out in the middle of the ocean someplace? I hope he comes back. I liked how he did business. Very professional one customer at a time type. I don’t recall seeing him during the last few months of There. Hope he’s OK. He often had huge weekend sales on the back side of ootay not far from zona.

      • #27 by Seg_Vio on 2011.06.19 - 9:47 am

I can’t remember his full Avie name, his name is Richard though. I’ve been trying to remember his name too lol. He handeled himself very well for a person on dial-up and a hearing problem (can’t remember if he was fully deaf or just partially). I hope he makes it back in There too! I considered him a good friend.

I was unaware that people abused the sales clubs, I had many sales myself since I was addicted to building in There. The reason I mentioned the uselfullness was due to it being said that they should be removed, my reply just didn’t go in the right spot.

  18. #28 by Fearless_Phil on 2011.06.17 - 7:30 pm

Club Suggestion – Although my preference would be option 3, it seems the feedback indicates starting fresh might be the way to go.

So my suggestion is to provide the current Club Leaders with some type of view only text read out of their clubs with descriptions, members, settings, etc. This way they can cut/paste if they need to rebuild any of their clubs. If that’s too hard to provide for individual club leaders, then may just post a reference with all those details in forums or as a downloadable file or something.

    • #29 by toufovou on 2011.06.17 - 9:39 pm

Just for the sake of conversation since MW requested not to give our answers here but wait for the poll, but I think that No 3 sounds. There are some groups with hundreds of members, ATTAIDC for example which was owned by Godess Lexcee. If she came back it would be very difficult for her to start all over again and reenroll everybody. It would only be fair that all the members that return are automatically back in the groups they were – only if the leader is back of course. A group leader will obviously be given the option to re-open her group and the the members should either be automatically reinstated or given the option to return to the group if they wish. Naturally we can’t be a member of a group who’s leader hasn’t returned.
If the owner hasn’t returned after a certain period of time – say 6 months or a year – then maybe the group can be deleted and the name can be available for someone else to claim for himself. But that would probably be combined with the unclaimed accounts so if the time limit is over and accounts are deleted, then of course so are the groups.

    • #30 by HighFlier on 2011.06.18 - 8:57 am

Won’t be forums just so you know in case you missed it. Unless you mean the forums inside the club pages which I’m pretty sure were connected to the main forums right? so would they still be there is perhaps a question yet.

  19. #31 by frankprss on 2011.06.17 - 7:17 pm

I worked amazingly hard for my paintball team. It is the only reason I played. I’m not rejoining There unless I get to keep my team (Resistance). Besides, there will be enough points floating around that the rankings will be fine and work the way they are intended.

    • #32 by xSnoopy on 2011.06.18 - 3:06 am

      Your missing the point.
      To quote Mr. Wilson:
“The same issue(s) exist for League Rankings. What sense will it be for your to be the #1 Paintballer (well, I guess I should say β€œ#2β€³, since I am by definition #1) when everyone else below you hasn’t returned (and won’t?). Worse yet, how would it be to be #3, know you’ll never get to #2 because #2 will never come back? The idea of letting people re-compete for standings seems to be fair, on the surface at least.”
If we reinstate team/league ratings there will always be those teams, in the top 10, that aren’t even active.
What is the sense of trying to overcome a rating that might have been achieved fraudulently?
I want to see teams back in There, just ones that are viable and, hopefully get there ranking honestly.
How hard is it going to be to reform your team?
This is our chance to make paintball new and interesting at least for a short period until egos take over.

    • #33 by Bumpin42 on 2011.06.19 - 2:47 am

Like i`ve said before There are PaintBall teams who DON`T want others to take there names Like Snipers and Hellfish iam sure. There are some griefers out there who would jump at the chance steal names like ours, Our team names are very important to us paintballers, It`s only not important to the ones whos not on a team or whos gotin kicked off a team and you all know who you are. As far as Clubs go i think we should keep them and after 90 days if there not reclaimed then erace em, This way people have the change to claim there clubs and after 90 days , Well them it time to clean house on all the unclaimed ones now that sounds fair to me.

  20. #34 by Sleestak on 2011.06.17 - 1:15 pm

Can you fix the portafun zones while you are at it?

  21. #35 by Okalnix on 2011.06.17 - 12:38 pm

Relax all give MW some space ,some of the blog are to big to read .
Its good to have a auto reading lol.
I know most wanted have There fast onlne and also to restore most clubs wen we left he game.
For now I think the leader of the actief avie get there club back with no member in it.
So the name of the club are still by the owner.

Make smaller post in this blug.

Relax and I have just open a cold beer and appelcake.

    • #36 by HighFlier on 2011.06.18 - 9:22 am

And what relaxation methods did you have in mind? Inquiring minds want to know. Is a blug what you drink your cold beer in? jking

  22. #37 by SalemScott on 2011.06.17 - 12:34 pm

Thanks for the update Michael, I’ll continue to stalk your blog for future updates like a creeper. A fresh start would be ideal because even though we might have lost a good amount of old Thereians, but will gain plenty of new faces. As always, my offer to help as a volunteer still stands.

  23. #38 by Sara on 2011.06.17 - 11:09 am

Where is that survey? Did I miss it or it hasn’t came out yet? I refrained from putting my comment up since it was expressed not to in the message. Whatever is easiest to do. If all the groups were abolished and everybody started new that would be fine if it was the easiest. But I wouldn’t mind seeing my old groups intact. Though they weren’t ever used so it wouldn’t matter. I think I just had my alts join to make me look good plus a few others joined. So I say keep the groups titles but don’t bother with adding the members because these members are just going to trickle in over the next 3 months and it really isn’t going to be reasonable to deal with that. So just keep the groups names in the accounts of the owner of it. Thats all you can do.

    • #39 by HighFlier on 2011.06.18 - 9:37 am

It might be a test to see who can hold off the longest so he can compare the answers to the post of those who ask what happen to the, well you know what I mean. Might not want to mention the S word or his radar might detect you and make comparisons out of it. Sorta like a Therian science project of sorts. I think the There Gods do those an awful lot.

  24. #40 by Wendy Stoll (Wendy50s) on 2011.06.17 - 9:38 am

Have I missed the survey? I don’t see a link.

    • #41 by HighFlier on 2011.06.18 - 10:02 am

I don’t either but I’m not saying that S word. I think it’s done on purpose to test peoples patience.

“Might want to consider charging a reasonable fee to start a new club like 500T – 1000T”
Great idea! That would probably put an end to the senseless number of clubs with one member.

    • #43 by HighFlier on 2011.06.17 - 9:41 am

Exactly, but as you know 500T to someone who really wants to grieve is just chicken scratch. Some will still do it at any cost but at least it will be a rare occasion.

  26. #44 by Unknown on 2011.06.17 - 7:58 am

Well I was late with that question all the anwsers popped up late on my side but anyway keep up the good work MW your doing a wonderful job :DDD

  27. #45 by Unknown on 2011.06.17 - 6:34 am

I think it was 50 drops. Because I had one and it was 50. And 2 acre was 50 drops to but it was 90 meters while the 1 acre was 64 meters. I kind of wrote that down when I had my Neighborhood Lot…

Note: Many of the There Clubes migrated to facebook
I know for certain the BFF clulb did.
I do hope the Questing Clubhouse returns.

I think Micheal Wilson should have a Statue erected in the community Garden
presently he is most loved man in all of cyberspace for restoring our world.

Also to assist with cost I would like to volunteer my services as a newbie helper/greeter
Beta tester, or any other capacity that will insure there.com STAYS open.

Just get rid of them all together. Do we really need them? Many net services have removed groups as they are totally pointless with all the new social media and the gigantic blogosphere. Even AOL father of the intranet got rid of them ions ago and people screamed over it but now see why. The ones I belong to on MSN are like relics of the past. I’m surprised they still have them listed. Just remove them all together if at all possible unless they have to be there for some reason I just don’t see why we need them anymore. Less junk for you guys to deal with. If we will still have the events system we had before there is no need that I can see for groups anymore. Keep it simple and get rid of them plus all that operating cost they use. Less operating cost there ya go.

Or try to go without using them for 90 days and see if we really need them. You can always restore them later Id assume. This would make the profiles more simple too giving them a cleaner appearance removing all that junk. Only thing I might add though is if you could give us some URL link slots on our profiles to use for teleports or links to our outside blogs or groups that would be even more reason to dump the groups all together. Just like the forums you no longer need those groups. Your not going to allow people to pay out third party there bucks though a group anymore right? So why do we need them?

    • #53 by HighFlier on 2011.06.17 - 4:39 am

If you must use them however,
Might want to consider charging a reasonable fee to start a new club like 500T – 1000T seems very fair (some operating costs collected there ya go). This is how other worlds do it to keep people from manufacturing clubs they don’t need or create for the purpose of grieving which happened very often in There more than other worlds Iv used because of a fee to pay if you want to grieve so this just doesn’t happen. I can remember several instances where people created clubs purely to grieve someone or another club and it’s members. Your staff had to moderate and even ban some members for this using up operating costs. This fee would probably put an end to all that once and for all in most cases and get people to take care of their clubs better too if they paid to get it. I did like the simplicity of the club pages There had but it would have been nice to have more link slots for URL links and teleport links. At least 20 would be good and make the club page more useful. I think they had 10. We were unable to moderate comments and that was a bummer so why they needed their own forum I never figured out.

As I recall you could join 100 clubs and I think that was reasonable. Maybe it was more I just can’t remember. Some clubs had lots of people waiting for join approval where the owner of the club never logged in anymore to update their club. I usually deleted those the fastest when I noticed them off my list. But look close at those clubs who have members still waiting to be accepted and have not approved requests to join for a long period of time.To me those are really dead clubs if the owners are ignoring requests to join it’s probably because the owner has moved to Neptune.

I think older members will vote more for keeping them as they were as much as possible because only they know what they went through to develop and recruit for those clubs which was extremely time. It took a lot of time to build up the memberships in some of those clubs. Newer members without clubs will say trashem and could probably give a hoot. So this survey might be a clash of the old and new or team against team too. Get your debate gear on folks cause this could be a hot topic. if you think there will be so many people who will never show again to claim there clubs think again. Through There’s history people always show up again after a long hiatus. People will reclaim them in due time. What ever you do with clubs keep it simple please. They don’t need to be all fancy and with all kinds of buttons on them to other social media stuff. Keep all that stuff off of them please. I like them simple as they were. Keep it simple.

Also just the history of members in some of those clubs provides a lot of history about There. So I’m not so sure it’s a good thing to erase all the past history of connections and friendships but I don’t really think we even need them anymore as suggested above to cut operating cost back and trim that greasy bacon. Put the groups out to chicken feed is what I’m saying or store them away.

      • #54 by SaltySilver on 2011.06.17 - 8:20 am

Really? get rid of “them” ?… I for one like teams and clubs. It’s is something to identify yourself and others with similar thoughts and likes. What would it be like if you could not form groups? one word, isolated. I loved the clubs, and the vast selection you can join. ie: There botanical gardens, Island guides, Spinning Spades, Ridgeriders, Snipers paintball. Its a way to come together and share your passions. πŸ˜€

      • #55 by HighFlier on 2011.06.17 - 9:26 am

You can form your own these days outside of the world. Just like the forums there are countless ways to form clubs and groups outside of the world where you have a lot more freedom of expression and control too more so than you did in There were everything was monitored by the helpers they can no longer pay to moderate. I’m more concerned with their bottom line and suggesting they go back to the basics. Which would be getting access to my transports and cloths, being able to move around in world again. Right now lets just get back in world first and get auctions going too.

You have so many social media sites that you can link to from There these days to form your own groups or forums of people who like exactly what you like. These sites are much more equipped to host such activity than There is. There in my opinion needs to stick to their social entertainment basics and it’s basic qualities that separate it from the others. Yes it’s a social world but they need to get back to the basics of what made it so great which is not groups but many other things. Also I know the groups are heavily associated with teams and all that but you can use so many online third party sites to create your own site for team standings and such as some of you already have in the past.

Why make these guys worry about it if they are on such a shoestring budget as they have clearly showed us very openly. Maybe if we help them trim some stuff back and give them a break they can keep things going. I don’t think a group not being on someones list will stop them from coming into There and paying the subscription so I say trim that fat off the bacon. I will admit I posted the topic to see if this has crossed the minds of other members.

Not have clubs?? You are kidding – right? There is a social world – one means of being social is starting, participating and being a member of a club. The forums were very useful with the questing club – it allowed us to announce quests, the results of the quest and events coming up, I feel we need the forum feature for clubs. Also to rent a There ClubHouse you had to be the leader of a club, thus the one member clubs in some cases. I still want that feature or if taken away a feature so another member could be able to decorate and hold events in the clubhouse. But back to the suibject —- more URL’s? Didn’t we have the option to save places and teleport to them? I even belonged to one club that used the club home page to provide a teleport link. I don’t think charging to start a club will deter anyone making one imo. If you want a cleaner profile page – quit your clubs so they are not listed ‘shrug

      • #57 by HighFlier on 2011.06.17 - 11:59 am

You have a good point there about: >another member could be able to decorate and hold events in the clubhouse

That would be missed and not just in clubhouses that goes for all zones and There Houses too. I would miss that feature probably the most and I did think about it. Also if Clubs were removed which were connected to the hoods would that be the end of hoods? or could people pay for them and take ownership of them from the post like an ordinary paz?

      • #58 by SaltySilver on 2011.06.17 - 5:48 pm

Excellent Point Vmcl. co-host groups for all kinds of events, funzones, hoods was a big thing.

Can you remove “There is Closed” word at the Right Upper of the there.com page?
It annoys people, just change it to There”2″ is coming, or something .

    • #64 by Innie on 2011.06.17 - 7:54 am

I agree. Infact, when trying to show There.com to people, seeing There is Closed makes them question the company.

    • #65 by HighFlier on 2011.06.17 - 8:54 am

      Listen up peeps,
Something must be wrong with your browser people. Clean your disks and get rid of what ever crappy third party browser you have or something it’s been saying this in big bold print smack dab on the center of the screen in white where you’d have to be blind to miss it for a good while now. Are you looking at the back of your monitors perhaps? lol

      > “”””””””””There will be re-opening!
Click here for more information.”””””””””””” <Can't you clearly see this on the page. Look really close because you just can't miss it.

and there is a link that works just fine the text is clear and very bold in white. Can't miss it. Maybe your firewall is blocking it or you were previously ban from the site. That might also effect your view. Sometimes the site goes down for whatever reason but it always comes back eventually. Also check the URL in the address bar once you click to go. If it has another address you might have a virus or spyware redirecting you except for the bacon lol. Anyway it's clearly stated on the page what I would expect it to say. Maybe your just jumping to conclusions. What do I know. Take a deep breath and read on if you dare…

The black text part up in on right side is ( true ) ( correct) ( suppose to be there)
because the world is closed presently physically and technically to all members and visitors until it opens again which it isn't open yet. <<<< The world is not open yet!

The world is not open yet!

That was put there on purpose because people ((( probably like you all ))) kept begging him to put the actual world status on the front page so you could instantly know if the world was open at a glance without logging in and that's just what he did. So now what's your reason for complaining about this over and over?

((( The world is closed that's the reason it's posted up there ))). Do you get it yet!

When the world is open it will change to There is Open…meaning the actual world has opened and you can now login. it's going to happen again when they close the world for maintenance times. So get used to it. Stop banging him about that because it's correct and what people begged him for a long to do.

I don't know any other way to explain it more clear to you. If you don't get it this time your refusing to understand why that's posted on the page. Should you dare to post any other explanation of your own as to why you think that's posted up there you'd be refusing to understand out of stupidity. Do you not want to be able to know when the world is open?

Why don't you all explain this to your friends who have never visited There before and explain how cool it is to just glance at the page to know if There is open. I mean come on it's not that hard to just explain it to someone as I have had to do to you. Now, if it doesn't change when There actually does open you can blow some steam back at me.

      • #66 by HighFlier on 2011.06.17 - 9:49 am

Guess they could update the page behind the world login link that says the world is closed about the closing that I will admit should be changed or have a little tag placed over, or just let it go to bacon slice for now. yummy

    • #67 by Sara on 2011.06.18 - 1:12 pm

I don’t think they are actually calling this place There 2. It is just There as far as I know. But it is fun to say There 2 for the time being. It is There 1 returning. I have heard nothing that would constitute this place being called There 2 to be honest. It is the same There and I don’t think we will be going to There2.com anytime soon. That would be dumb. But I understand you want a positive statement. I just went back. It does say There will be re-opening! Click here for more information. It just says There is closed now. Like when you go to a store at a certain time it will say closed. That is the nature of the beast. Something is either Open or Closed.

Any news on the Mac client? Will there be a Mac version of ThereIM?

  37. #69 by Rhonda Ebert on 2011.06.17 - 2:42 am

I have a unique problem i am sure.. my beta avatar was/ is EmmaJean. over the years i created several alternates, including ccr_gina & RockinRhonda, then my alts had alts to hold inventory ( like ccr_Gino) and some of my alts held the clubs.. the biggest of course being CCR. thats probably the only one i care about. however with a monthly fee, i doubt i would revive any avatar besides myself (the orginal EmmaJean). And again depending on the fees, I not sure i could run ccr. i guess it depends on it if we are allowed to run buggys anywhere, with or without a usage charge. and whether or not i could afford to run ccr races. I lost ccr_gina’s property (Bananaphone) a few months before there closed due a mistake in my accounting and i gave away a lot of inventory the last days. however she still has the club. and lots of inventory along with her counterpart ccr_gino. Ideally i would love to just revive EmmaJean and still retain the club CCR and the inventory that at least ccr_Gina holds.

Maybe my problems are not totally unique, but given the choices i have to make. I will find a way to make it work either way. inventory aside, the only club i worry about is CCR.

    • #70 by Sara on 2011.06.17 - 11:15 am

Sounds pretty complicated. There can’t micro-manage all these things. All you do is start a new Club named CCR under EmmaJean. Then you go out and round up your old members and find some new ones. Plain and simple. We can’t worry about the past groups from alts lol. Also why give away all your inventory at the end? You mean when you knew it was shutting down you gave people things that were going to Avatar Astral land too and wouldn’t be able to keep them but they gave you a hug and a thousand thank you’s for that rare buggy? lol

      • #71 by Rhonda Ebert on 2011.06.27 - 4:43 am

ooh i don’t care about the inventory>) that was a joy for me! but the alts helped me manage the money that was not mine. and inventory also not mine. it came from the members and went back to different ones is all! however we did have restrictions on amount the people that could join at first. so there actually 2 or 3 ccr clubs. no worries, i have a plan. I will just resurrect both. its the least i can do.

If any of you have used ThereIM can you tell me how it is to use it? Do you stand around with 3 avatar friends at once at chat? For some reason I never heard about it when it was out. I saw a screenshot of it. I think it was just a white background. Let me know if you used it much or any information on it. I am just curious about it. Thanks, Sara

Thanks for the update Michael ..
Thanks to you and the crew for a great job.. I won’t be upset if you guys miss the end of June by a couple of days.
This is a new start for There.
    Let’s start fresh with everything.
It’s not that hard to form new clubs and probably 70 to 90% of the old members won’t be back.
Lets make this a completely new start for rankings also. Most of the top 50 were inactive.
A lot of the paintballers will cheat their way to the top so why make rankings at all. It’s an ego thingie.
The PB rankings were a farce. It came down to who thought of the cleverest way to increase your score without actually competing.
Log on a second avie. Start a long match and shoot the crap out of your second avie. Instant high ranking.

  42. #76 by Presence on 2011.06.16 - 5:03 pm

Michael, have you given any thought to possibly creating an iphone ap for the there IM? I think that would be a great idea to possibly generate some revenu for there.com, for all of us to keep intouch throughout the day, and could possibly be a bit of advertisment in the iphone world.

    • #77 by Jonathan on 2011.06.18 - 9:14 am

I was thinking that. If there’ll be a Mac client, i don’t see why not, both are Objective-C (Unless just using a Obj-C wrapper). Don’t forget to have it on the App-Store developers have to pay $99, yes, not that much, but if the app would be free, it’s something to consider.

Perhaps there could be a additional cost to the monthly fees for mobile access, just like the Spotify application does.

Actually there are different drop limit lots/pazes since July 2009 when they offered 100 drop 1 acres, 2 acres, and 3 acres in addition to the regular 50 drop 1 and 2 acre . About the same time they increased hood drop limits.

      • #82 by Greenie on 2011.06.18 - 10:00 am

In the old system, we closed with the choice of 50 or 100 drop neighborhood lots and paz. FUN!

so when you say there IM will be open at the end of june does that mean the website and new user registration will be open then to?

  45. #84 by JasonMK on 2011.06.16 - 2:08 pm

THANK YOU for the updates, been chomping at the bit to see something. As far as the THEREIM by the end of the month, will the latest build before There closed (actually, the one available AFTER There closed) work, or will it need to be a new download?

    • #85 by daniel on 2011.06.16 - 4:08 pm

lol you still have the old one on your computer…. koudos to you sir

    • #86 by jonathan on 2011.06.16 - 7:39 pm

Why does it matter if you do or don’t? I think it’d HAVE to be a new download (correct me if i’m wrong), but with everything moving ‘to the cloud’ lots of things will have changed to make this work.

  46. #87 by VoniLei on 2011.06.16 - 1:55 pm

Regardless of what you decide to do with the clubs, I do hope the Jump the Hole club is restored…just for the memories.

  47. #88 by Rick Caldas on 2011.06.16 - 1:34 pm

yes mr wilson new fresh start with the rankings , i was like 35th on the top 50 paintballers, but around 40% of the people on it were either banned or inactive so i think thats a good idea, now for the clubs “teams” you should think of something that will stop people stealing ratings from others etcetera

  48. #89 by Stephen Mol on 2011.06.16 - 1:29 pm

When do you plan to update the there.com website so that it doesn’t say that it’s closing?

  51. #93 by Therians Fan on 2011.06.16 - 12:53 pm

I was thinking hard, and I know it’s very difficult to restore all of the clubs back. Do you think it’s possible if you could set a limit to X amount of usernames in that group their club will be able to come back? For those who have empty clubs, or that doesn’t meet your requirements they can file a request that may or may not guarantee to see if you can recover them. By the way, will we have Cats when There reopens? lol. πŸ™‚ I know how much you love cats. lol. πŸ˜‰

  52. #94 by martin71 on 2011.06.16 - 12:34 pm

hi there MW me and freinds think it would be better all round if you started it from fresh as for club oweners like my sefl it wont take long to get members back in to your clubs as it will take longer to set them as they was..
that i think you should do is get thereIM up and running as you are doing and set there.com up with the landmarks so ppls can meet up again chat or drive so you can get the hoods and paz`s set up again ..

P.S i sure did enjoy that bacon :))

    thx cya

Many made “clubs” just for the sake of leveling up.. Won’t miss mine, rather start fresh. I do know some that had large memberships, pretty sure they would want them as is. As far as “elvis” goes (thats my dog), I’m sure he howled for all the other critters n kept them happy. thanks for the update Michael. The wait will be worth it!

  55. #97 by Carol G on 2011.06.16 - 12:25 pm

  62. #105 by Richard Hallock on 2011.06.16 - 11:50 am

I am thinking about what you have written, and I tired to resist posting, but It does not address the issue of clubhouses. Since those are tied to clubs, whould the deeds just vanish from inventory if clubs were blanked under plan 1? I rented a few clubhouses at the time there.com closed, might we be able to get those back at some point in the future as in could you keep a list of the few members renting clubhouses at the time and then give them back when they become rentable? Without the forums attached to the clubs, I don’t see a real reason not to start over, aside from the clubhouse issue.

    • #106 by Michael Wilson on 2011.06.16 - 12:21 pm

Yes, we’ll probably restore the Club to you if (a) you were the Club leader, and/or (b) holder of the clubhouse deed.

  64. #108 by JonmiChel on 2011.06.16 - 11:13 am

    Greetings Michael Wilson,

From my point of view is pretty fair that you don’t restore all the clubs since most of them will be empty and Im sure that people who enters again on There, will re-make clubs for all their news friends or families so, no problem from my side ^^

A quick question about someone that I really missed lmao: Will dogs be back into our old avatars? ^^ I missed ’em so much lmao!

Thanks you very much for your effort and all the work you and your team and putting in this magnificient game, THANKS YOU !

    • #109 by Michael Wilson on 2011.06.16 - 11:22 am

Yes, your dogs will be back. We kept them all in a special dog shelter while you were gone. However, we do have admit that a few shoes got…chewed. We’re sure you’ll hardly be able to notice with a little polish.

A quick question. Id you don’t mind.
Will we have to pay for premium or will voice and all be available if you create and pay for a new avatar?

It was probably my two lil bold dachshunds, Krazy and Kyleigh, that caused most of the damage. ‘gulp They are probably just a bit anxious about There reopening and might be afraid that when my inventory gets transferred over they’ll be sent back to the There Dog Pound since they took advantage of a night full of technical difficulties back in 2004 to sneak back in to my inventory after the 5 minute trial for them expired. I am interested in seeing if my two bold dachshunds successfully transfer over since they are stuck try its from 2004 but doubt they will. I did report it back then and the staff then didn’t seem to care. I’d hate to lose them since they are the only bold dachshunds that I know of in world, but I will understand if you take them away since I never paid their adoption fee. πŸ˜›

Last I heard the dogs were well fed and really enjoying jumping off Avie Sacrifices without us to boss them around. Rumors say that there were some issues with the Clucky family and there was a war going on to see who would take over the region. It was utter chaos till MW himself decided to take control of the situation and madly paintball them till they all surrended. Rambo himself couldn’t have done a better job. πŸ˜€
