Be careful what you wish for..

In response to the innumerable requests and comments, we’ve decided, after much internal debate, to provide video of one of our “lucky” Guinea Pigs testing There.

The family will be setting up a foundation to support other’s who volunteer, and their families.

There will be further updates later.

After reading one of the comments about the minors thing, and parent being able to sue or whatever there.com for anything that happens or whatever-
What if a parent sent a signed letter or something saying that they give their child permission because they will be monitoring their child? Not just a signed letter, because it can always just be the child, but info proving that it is the parent sending the letter…? This is for The there WORLD, not ThereIM.

  2. #2 by Tinirty on 2011.07.27 - 4:43 pm

After watching that, I just feel so…sad…grossed out…scarred…I’m calling PETA. Yuck! I do NOT do sushi.

  3. #3 by GreenAngel on 2011.07.27 - 2:39 pm

I am glad that I dont eat sushi, yuck!!!!!!!

  4. #4 by datasender on 2011.07.26 - 8:39 pm

haha… That is one of the best vids I have seen in a long time.. Didn’t see that coming!!

  5. #5 by n00dles on 2011.07.26 - 9:13 am

Skippy, I am scarred for life. Again. 🙂

  6. #6 by MysteriousYouth on 2011.07.26 - 7:42 am

Dont see what the problem is.. its someone pouring something over a squid lol even if its alive or dead it didn’t show anything disturbing, i in fact was confused to why it was doing that lol then i read the comments and MW explained why xD.

  7. #7 by Lady Tigrane on 2011.07.26 - 1:05 am

Now show me a vid of lobster cooking and I’m SOOO all over that! NOM NOM NOM !!!

  8. #8 by Barney S. on 2011.07.25 - 2:03 pm

  9. #9 by kk on 2011.07.25 - 11:43 am

ewww that is like so gross……..

  10. #10 by SunnyMusic on 2011.07.25 - 8:53 am

So glad the poor thing is dead, but even so, that video will haunt me for days! -shivers- 😛

  11. #11 by HighFlier on 2011.07.25 - 5:33 am

YUCK! dead or alive. Protects my pet gold fish from these people. Back to the worst heat wave in 70 years in the US….just step outside folks and run around your house just one time. That’ll take your mind off this. Then move to next update to forget.

    • #12 by Rakja on 2011.07.25 - 10:49 am

If I went outside silly, I wouldn’t need There. :P~~

  12. #13 by MrScrooge on 2011.07.25 - 5:16 am

This is something I would expect Stephen King to post if he had a blog. Nice job grossing everyone out! I thought it was pretty cool even though I don’t eat animals. Very neat how things work sometimes.

    • #14 by XNecroscopeX on 2011.07.25 - 11:09 am

      You don’t eat animals? 😮

    • #15 by Winged on 2011.07.25 - 1:08 pm

actually when i saw it i had one word coming in my head.
      Yummy!

  13. #16 by Winged on 2011.07.25 - 1:57 am

    not Kosher but looks tasty,

  14. #17 by Fallax on 2011.07.24 - 11:57 pm

As Michael has stated…it is dead….the squid is very fresh (but dead) ..The biochemical machinery is still functioning….the cells are still active enough that the salt in the soy sauce (which has sodium ions), works on the ATP molecules stored in the cells..causing an electrical reaction..which in turn causes the muscles to contract, giving it an appearance of being alive. No cruelty….no feelings…no pain…..just dead squid… .

  15. #18 by Bronnieb59 on 2011.07.24 - 10:31 pm

I love food….meat, fish, chicken and realise something has to die for me to enjoy a meal but torturing my food first is not on…. that is so incredibly cruel!!! What is wrong with some people? Whether it is an animal/fish/insect etc it’s just plain cruel!

    • #19 by Bronnieb59 on 2011.07.24 - 10:35 pm

There is no way its dead…it moves before the soy sauce goes on…soy would be cooking it alive….

  16. #20 by SB on 2011.07.24 - 10:21 pm

Oddly enough, I found myself being sucked in to watching other squid videos…~lol~

    • #21 by IMAKOS on 2011.07.25 - 8:10 am

      lol.. you are sick hahaha

  17. #22 by Skye on 2011.07.24 - 10:04 pm

I just realized how disgusting that video is. Who puts soy sauce on raw squid? EW. I’d have to rinse it off to eat it.

  18. #23 by IMAKOS on 2011.07.24 - 9:43 pm

I love my raw foods BUT that was a bit Much even for this Hawaiian.. it was still moving haha Kinda like swing at the soy sauce…lol rule of Thumb… Kill the bugga first..

  19. #24 by Hexxxis on 2011.07.24 - 8:30 pm

    Damn nature you scary

  20. #25 by Cyndi Yonkers on 2011.07.24 - 8:22 pm

MW’s way of putting off people from begging to be GP’s. 🙂

  21. #26 by TreGhost on 2011.07.24 - 7:45 pm

Lol if people can cut chicken’s heads off and watch them run around without being considered inhumane then you can pour soy sauce on a DEAD squid ppl. On another note, MW a “vashcommunity There” on facebook is posting a link to download there now saying he works for Makena. Just letting you know, but it’s posted on a There page on FB that I seen you respond was not related to There in any way.
You can edit this part, just showing you what he posted: “Vashcommunity There
    its here http://webapps.prod.there.com/download/
    Download There!
    webapps.prod.there.com
When asked, “Do you want to run or save this file?” select “Run.” Follow the instructions for the There installer.”

  22. #29 by Taelos Katran on 2011.07.24 - 7:35 pm

MW must have industrial strength “peril insensitive” glasses when reading these forums! ‘tu

    • #30 by Lady Tigrane on 2011.07.26 - 12:59 am

nah… if they annoy him enough, MW will have their avatars become headless zombie squid when they finally log onto There when it opens

  23. #31 by RRTT on 2011.07.24 - 7:20 pm

Surprised people are sensitive enough to call this inhumane or whatever else along those lines. The world has much bigger humanitarian problems than this. Just two cents, people. Still looking forward to There’s relaunch. Post a real update soon! Its been 3 days, something must have happened. That SamSyn fellow probly fixed some crap, right?

    • #32 by Michael Wilson on 2011.07.24 - 7:26 pm

You all have noticed that it’s the weekend, right?

      • #33 by RRTT on 2011.07.24 - 7:53 pm

Good Point. But, in my defense, I have worked more than 8 hours both today and yesterday. So, no, weekends don’t exist for me.

    • #34 by YankeeintheSouth on 2011.07.25 - 6:16 am

I tried warning you, every few days either you get nagged or members do, lol. Weekends dont seem to matter when it comes to There.com reopening.

  24. #35 by Marissa Ramos on 2011.07.24 - 7:20 pm

thats so ew. 😦 couldnt watch anymore.

cant wait for There to reopen ❤

  25. #36 by Raymond on 2011.07.24 - 7:13 pm

Lol great vid MW. Too funny! 🙂

  26. #37 by XNecroscopeX on 2011.07.24 - 6:50 pm

I highly doubt youtube.com would allow animal abuse on their website. Especially, since it’s illegal to abuse animals in the U.S. 😉 Lets think a little guys… 🙂 You’re making yourselves look under 18.

    • #38 by Defector on 2011.07.24 - 7:34 pm

Can I ask how its making people look under 18? It is very convincing that it’s alive since it looks like it’s attempting to climb out of the bowl. I’ve seen a lot worse on Youtube, doing drugs is illegal in the US yet people still post videos on Youtube of them doing it.

      • #39 by XNecroscopeX on 2011.07.25 - 1:58 am

        1. I’ve seen marijuana videos on Youtube, but it’s been for medicinal purposes, which is legal in some states.
        2. It makes them look ignorant, which tends to be a common trait amongst 13-17 year olds.
        3. If they read some of the reviews, did some research and didn’t assume it was animal cruelty they would sound more mature and educated. You can’t jump the gun and expect it to be shooting blank bullets, Defector.
        4. Some may be educational videos.
        5. You can’t compare animal cruelty (killings) with drug use.

      • #40 by Defector on 2011.07.25 - 3:06 pm

How are people supposed to know pouring soy sauce on squid makes its legs move? What are you supposed to google? “Pouring brown liquid on squid, squid moving legs and trying to get out of bowl” Number 2 is very stereotypical. There are many folks on this blog who were upset about the video who we know are above 18. As for number 5, you said animal cruelty is illegal and I said so is drug use yet people still put it on youtube.

  27. #41 by Defector on 2011.07.24 - 6:03 pm

This makes me want to get a pet squid. I have always wanted a salt water fish tank. When I used to live in Florida I had one but had to get rid of it when I moved to Tennessee.

    • #42 by Soede on 2011.07.24 - 8:24 pm

Just dont feet it any soy sauce =p

  28. #43 by Defector on 2011.07.24 - 5:59 pm

Ok, as long as its dead.. I thought they were abusing the poor thing. Thanks for clarifying.

  29. #44 by appaloosa on 2011.07.24 - 5:52 pm

Oh that is so wrong!! Thanks MW ‘tu

  30. #45 by Melody_Chase on 2011.07.24 - 5:43 pm

    That’s just disgusting. Bad form!!!

  31. #46 by XNecroscopeX on 2011.07.24 - 5:32 pm

LMAO!!! That’s so funny. I was just watching something similar on youtube. Except, it was frog legs and salt. You should watch it. It’s pretty cool.

P.S. Where do I signup to donate for their cause?

  32. #47 by trevor9393 on 2011.07.24 - 5:30 pm

    That’s so disturbing.!

  33. #48 by kris on 2011.07.24 - 5:24 pm

    Rofl… good response MW

  34. #49 by Sassybeme There on 2011.07.24 - 5:24 pm

Awe! It looks like the poor squid don’t care for his bath. errr.. Was that a female. Sorry I can’t tell. 🙂

    • #50 by xSnoopy on 2011.07.25 - 2:14 am

      Sassy,
      That was a sexist remark!
      Why would you care? 🙂
Hmmm, a better question might be :WHERE would you look? LOL

  35. #51 by Christy Clendenen on 2011.07.24 - 5:21 pm

    Disturbing LOL

  36. #52 by jimony@comcast.net on 2011.07.24 - 5:19 pm

I can’t figure out which is which,
    or which is worse;

Are the GPs the squid or do they have to eat it?

    • #53 by xSnoopy on 2011.07.25 - 2:11 am

      jimony,
The answer to your question is ……………………………………… Yes!
Or as FOX30 noted, we also fish with it!

  37. #54 by rakja on 2011.07.24 - 4:39 pm

I’m kind of surprised you would post that. I understand the analogy to the guinea pigs…but do you understand what they are doing to the squid in that movie? Abusing a defenseless fish with hot sauce and saying ‘it’s dancing’ really doesn’t fit into the theme of THERE does it? This movie really saddens me, when I was coming here to look for hope. Okay…that’s just my opinion. Back to the ‘Thank you Michael Wilson for saving THere’ post!

    • #55 by Michael Wilson on 2011.07.24 - 5:50 pm

The squid is dead. The soy sauce re-fires the neurons.

      • #56 by Rakja on 2011.07.25 - 7:36 am

Okay, easy killers. Retracted. I didn’t know it was dead. Not a big squid eater. I don’t think the post was meant as seriously as it was taken. (Now I remember why I don’t do forums). Thanks for the clarification MW. No harm no foul. 🙂

      • #57 by AquaFresh on 2011.07.25 - 10:12 pm

First i was like EEEEW….. Yest another sick human way to get entertained

Then reading a bit more into it before going balistik, funny how ppl just fling to the keyboard and yell inhumanety bla..bla..

Anyhow try to imagine if humas will ever get to leave this planet and explore strange new worlds, and those poor astronauts/kosmonauts will end up on a chilled plate getting their neurons re-excited the in the legs with soy sauce 😀

Humans have a very strange way to deal with other humans and animals, lucky we are the at top of the food chain, but for how long?

        Funny update MW 😀

        Aquafresh

    • #58 by XNecroscopeX on 2011.07.24 - 6:48 pm

Quit being so sensitive. Jesus! I bet you aren’t rallying in front of McDonalds for their inhumane treatment of animals. It’s dead… Deceased… not living… The salty content in the sauce make it move.

      • #59 by Seg_Vio on 2011.07.24 - 7:39 pm

Actually if people knew what it took to make their double cheese burger, they would boycot every fast food place.

      • #60 by Innie on 2011.07.25 - 7:45 am

Seg-Vio……that is exactly why we have not had fast food in over two years. It isnt just fast food, though. 90% of major restaurants are just as bad. Infact, it is exactly why I now only eat from a local farm that I know is very humane. Pasture raised eggs, chickens, and beef.

        Its amazing how

      • #61 by Seg_Vio on 2011.07.25 - 8:56 am

There is a documentary on Netflix called foodInc that shows all the disturbing details of where meat/dairy (in modern times) comes from. Ive been a advocate of meat my whole life and hated veggies. After watching that… I am considering becoming vegan!

Also read the international treaty known as Codex Alamintarious ( might be misspelled, google and it will correct itself I’m on my iPhone or I’d fix it myself). It is very disturbing as well. All Codex Alamintarious is is just a fancy way of saying food code (Latin).

    • #62 by xSnoopy on 2011.07.24 - 7:01 pm

Jeff Dunham has a puppet called Peanut.
In his act, Peanut passes his hand over his head and makes a sound like a car passing, when the audience does not get the joke.
      You got everyone’s attention Michael.
      This reaction is hysterical!
I just got to say it:
As A GP, I know how that squid felt……….. LOLOL
      Great video Francis!!

  55. #84 by Defector on 2011.07.24 - 3:19 pm

    I don’t get it. Sorry.

  57. #86 by Seg_Vio on 2011.07.24 - 3:17 pm

Looks like one of the levels of hell you read about in Dante’s Inferno… I believe that is the 7th level where you get soy sauce poured on you while dancing to show tunes, then eaten alive.

All kidding aside, that was disturbing on several levels like Yankee said. lol

  58. #87 by mmeodiles on 2011.07.24 - 3:08 pm

Call my granddaughter to the computer to see your obnoxious video 😉
    Here is her response MW….
“ok”,..she said…” that’s real nasty, but….. I want to keep that in my fish tank.

Oh man, that’s just effed up.

  74. #108 by Cellophane Thereian on 2011.07.24 - 2:22 pm

And one more; I would bet most of the people ewwing and gross-ing eat dozens of cows and hundreds of chickens in their lifetimes that are grown to slaughter weight in conditions that would make them puke if they knew the quality of the ‘meat’ and poultry they were eating a feeding to their children… Anyone hear of Soylent Green? (huge, ironic smile here).

    Remember, Google is your friend!

    K, I’m done…

    • #109 by Jane Meyers on 2011.07.28 - 8:57 am

I agree. My daughter has completely refused to eat “Tyson” brand chicken ever since she saw a video of how they slaughter their chicken. She cried for several house and gets upset whenever I buy Tyson. I used to tell her “They only kill the mean ones honey”, but that doesn’t seem to work anymore :0)

And because I just have to go on, have you ever known of Sannakji? If not it makes that there Dancing Squid look like a hot dog compared to Carpaccio- all things considered…

I like sushi but I think I’ll have to draw a line there. When your food tries to crawl away it’s a bit too fresh LOL

And I will add that Tori-sashimi for me personally was much more offensive. That is, not knowing if the Japanese condense their chickens a la Americano five to a cage as we do… ‘wink

It’s NOT alive. It’s dead. The soy sauce re-excites the neurons in the legs.

      • #127 by GoldFalcon on 2011.07.24 - 8:21 pm

        Uh…I turned 18 in April…?

        How would you even know?

      • #128 by Karenga Anderson on 2011.07.24 - 8:40 pm

why are you blowing up peoples spots!! if they know their not 18 then hey, thas all on them!!

      • #129 by GoldFalcon on 2011.07.25 - 1:19 pm

I just realized why you would have thought that. I was 16 when There closed (May 2010), so about one year later I should only be 17. However, since my birthday is in April, I turned 17 the month after There closed (April 2010), and turned 18 just a few months ago (April 2011).

Hopefully you follow that. The only reason I responded was to clear any misconceptions about me. However, when you don’t know all the facts, its best you don’t even get involved. In fact, I am not even sure how you know me. I * recognize* your avatar name…

        ————–

Now, we can set everything aside and I will explain why your post doesn’t even make sense assuming you knew everything about me and I was a minor.

Every time you call somebody out, you are sucking $10/month from There. Since this person is no longer playing There, several of their friends may choose to go to a new world. That too will cost even more money. And of course, now since these people don’t play There, they no longer try to convince their real life friends to play. Once again, hurting There’s long-term prospects.

So please do the world a service and don’t play police. I am not just saying this to “protect minors.” And I definitely am not advocating breaking any rules. I am however saying this for all drama. Why target somebody to get them banned, when you can just ignore them? There is a huge world, and the odds of you meeting a specific someone you don’t target are rather slim.

“Every time you call somebody out, you are sucking $10/month from There.”

No, every time they call someone out they’re protecting There from the liability of what happens if something unfortunate happens between a minor and a non-minor, and said minor’s parent’s decides to make There responsible for it. This will have a major hurt on There’s prospects.

        So you are incorrect.

      • #131 by GoldFalcon on 2011.07.25 - 4:12 pm

How could somebody hold There accountable for their actions?

Being that There is only a medium from communication, it doesn’t seem like -in any case- it could be the guilty party.

Furthermore, with a strict agreement, couldn’t rights to hold There accountable be waived with use?

      • #132 by Michael Wilson on 2011.07.25 - 4:38 pm

If you’re under 18 you can’t enter into a legal contract.

We have no idea that it would be the “parents” of a minor waving their rights. Not that that would hold up in court anyway. It certainly wouldn’t hold up in the court of public opinion, which, flawed as it may be, is still a consideration.

      • #133 by GoldFalcon on 2011.07.25 - 5:51 pm

I made my post assuming that identification would be necessary to sign up.

Even still, it is very unfortunate that public opinion can be so misguided to favor a person based on background, and not the true crime (should one even really exist).

Anyways, you have tapped out my reserve of legal jargon, and I am sure you have gone over every option numerous times. I guess the dilemma is minimizing risk as well as difficulty in signing up.
