Update 2011.08.07

Status Update: Bruce did his magic and switched us to Amazon SES and it looks like our email worries are all in the past. At least THAT set of worries. We also have to adapt to the new reality of “There is no ThereMail” (by which I mean you will no longer be able to send email directly to avatarName@there.com, and will have to use a webapp to do that sort of thing. And I’m hoping that if you DO try to send mail to avName@there.com we will send you an auto-reply with a link to the webapp, maybe with your stuff pre-filled-in)… Not QUITE as nice, but I’m sure everyone remembers how unreliable/slow the old ThereMail was.

I’m going to give Dan the OK to turn on self-invites for ThereIM only as soon as he’s ready. Repeat: ThereIM Only.

This doesn’t mean that everyone will get invited as soon as they self-invite themselves, especially if they’re at the “back of the line”.

We’re going to let the invites out a little at a time until we’re sure everything is going ok.

Just so everyone knows, the last bit of trouble wasn’t in There’s software, it was getting around the various email issues in today’s world.

Finally, even though ThereIM is free for now, it won’t be forever. Once we start charging for There, we’ll be charging for ThereIM. ThereIM is just a tool for accessing the service, which is what we’re charging for.

Thanks for bringing THERE back. Me and my wife enjoyed it very much, but in process of buying a new house we were not around for the last month of THERE and were heart broken to come and find it had closed. I know it had to to restructure (close due to income and to bypass former setup of cost and such / kids) and such for am a business man myself and in this economy many things have had to make drastic changes to survive. Just wanted again to say thanks for though it is a business, many of us looked at it as our bit of relaxation and fun time to spend with friends and family that we don’t get to see all to often. Hope that it excels and grows and becomes better than before with many more members that are actively apart of it and supporting it into new areas of advancement. Have a great one everybody .. have to actually get to work now lol On a side note… thanks Mr. Michael Wilson.. you were my excuse to get a new pc and am loving it.. no more Windows Vista. So what you want for Christmas? lol

In Second Life I can elect to have my IMs logged, along with chat, and also elect to have my IMs forwarded to and from my email when I am not in world. SL redirects these emails so neither party sees the RL email adr of the other. It seems to work well. So, it can be done, and can be integrated with in world IMs. Just FYI.

To help with a few people’s questions I see, self invite will most likely mean you enter info, they email you the link to download thereIM, etc. ThereiM will be included in the 10-15 per month charge is what he meant by it won’t be free, when you pay for there you’re paying for all reg services I assume. Hope this clears up a few things, I think MW has been busy lately cause not a lot of replies.
