But why can’t it be freeeeeeee????

Here’s a small update.

. 3,245 people have registered so far. Of course, that includes Alts, and Minors. This is comfortably over the “Break Even” line.

. Of those, 57 were from a member program called “v1_beta_lifetime”, and 214 were from a member program called “v1_beta_lifetime_prepay”, for a total of 8% of members so far.

. 2,367 have the title with the word “Lifetime” in them.

. Foolishly, we had many member programs with the word “Lifetime” in them. If we were to declare that everyone of them would get the service for Free, for eternity (since, well, Avatars don’t die), there’s now way we could afford to go forward.

So, the rule is that if you were “v1_beta_lifetime” or “v1_beta_lifetime_prepay”, you won’t have to pay monthly.

All members, however will now be “Premium”, for no extra cost.

Since the goal here is to break even, we won’t be spiffing accounts with T$ for the $10/month. We need to get the boat into the water and prove it floats before we start adding ballast.

I hope that clears things up. I know that 2,367 of you will be unhappy, but that’s better than 3,245 being unhappy that we wouldn’t try to open at all.

I am so happy that There.com is back! I should be part of that first lifetime beta member group as I know I participated in Beta from almost day 1, and I know I paid the full life-time beta price as soon as it was possible to do so. However, that being said, I want to do anything I can to keep this going and to that end as soon as the world is up and running I’ll start to purchase $10 worth of Therebucks every month as my way of support (and heck if I decide to make a huge purchase I may very well buy a ton more Therebucks if needed!).

I’m excited to get back in There!!

I have my ThereIM up and running for anyone who’d like to add me and chat about the good old days in There.

Gabi <– my real name and avatar name πŸ™‚

Hey I am a lifetime beta member as I joined as a tester in 2003 (and still have my beta mug!)
I am trying to get a list of all the beta members so I can reconnect with old friends,
    so head over to http://virtualworldtalk.com/general-discussion-11/there-com-lifetime-beta-members/
    if your beta! πŸ™‚
(Sorry for the shameful plugin to my site, haha- I really just am curious who else is beta!)
    Later!

I’m just sitting here for the past 1 1/2 hours reading this whole blog. lol sheesh. On my TV across the room I have “I Dream Of Jeannie” on. It struck me that there’s a comparison here. Years ago, “Jeannie” was FREE on network TV. NOW … the only way I can see it is by paying my Cable Provider $55 /mo. Now $55 is a lot more than $10, and I’ll certainly get a lot more enjoyment and time spent on There than I would from Jeannie. True, both used to be “FREE” but the value of There.com far exceeds Jeannie. lol Thanks!

Daaang There 2 3D is not open yet? Too much drama already – seriously? As I recall, we all voted to pay $10 a month to open There 2. I’m sure most of the “Lifers” did too. There 1 is dead, but MW is nice to enough to let them play for free on There 2.

Why don’t we just all pull $10 out of our pockets and wave it in the air like we just don’t care! Oh yeah, oh yeah! And say OPEN 3D ALREADY!

maybe all the whiners are just the griefers waiting to get back in and cause problems again.
speaking of which, hopefully there will be far less of that stuff going on.
now would be a good time to attempt to implement some kind of contingency plan to deal with griefers, like put the account on hold until it is proven they did or did not grief, then take appropriate action like: grief and ban, done.
    that would be cool

  14. #16 by norg on 2011.08.18 - 1:10 pm

WOW..this is all cool, I can remember my name in there but I cannot remember the email i used (was a lllooonnnggg time ago)…the help me remember page says it will ask a question but there is nothing but that statement, is there some way that we will be able to look up the email addy if we cannot remember our password?

    • #17 by ThereUser on 2011.08.18 - 2:40 pm

I don’t think there is an email lookup (could be used to take over others accounts)… the only thing I can think of is you can reset your password and then scan all your email accounts to see which one it was associated with… you can reset here: https://webapps.prod.there.com/scripts/legacy.py

If you never find which email you used, they have mentioned they would be offering an avatar recovery service in the future, but it would require a research fee.

        Here is a better idea!
The first day There is open to the public, lets all show up in Zephyr, or any other place you like and have an old fashioned paintball free for all.
No sides, no teams, no favorites, just kick ass for about an hour or as long as your shooting hand holds out.
        Whatcha think of that idea?

  16. #21 by fulkenstien on 2011.08.18 - 12:25 pm

personally i think MW should have said “hey look the old There is dead and this is a new There so we are going to start off with clean slates.this and that is how its going to be so accept it or don’t join.”
the old There had a few social problems that i think in part lead to the ending.for one thing too much bitching and moaning could affect rule changes.too many people thought they were special.this led to a lot of people that could afford to spend a lot of money to not waste it on There.com.this wasn’t MW’s fault.due to fact it was already in place there wasn’t much he could do to fix it.
with new clean slates and new “set in stone” rules would give everyone a feeling of being equal.
lets face it right now he is trying to do his best to make as many as he can happy.the idea that There is a service and if you are paying for it you expect good service the way you want it is stupid.

I’m actually kind of tired of reading this forum,it repeats itself over and over with the same questions and whining about Beta and non Beta..It cost to play and its a lousy $10,collect cans for the month it will pay your way. Times are tough for people i understand this but if you can afford the internet and the computer your typing on then squeeze 10 more dollers out of your pocket to play. just stop whining about Beta members playing for free..I’m beta and if MW wanted to charge me 10 bucks great I will pay to play and then some. It’s actually 33 cents a day to play the best 3d virtual game on the net..put your money where your mouth is then duct tape it there and stop complaining..This post pertians to anybody that’s complaining..MW didnt have to bring THERE Back…..But he did!!!!! Thank you MW.

  18. #23 by Un-Beta2003 on 2011.08.18 - 12:18 pm

Well aren’t those some fine apples. heh.

Remembering now how things went down when There launched, my beta avatar WON’T be free. It was a horribly complicated situation that would interest no one, heh. One that I neglected to pursue for YEARS. No one to blame but myself. πŸ™‚ Mostly because I kept my paid membership at the level it was so that it was kind of like a TB direct deposit.

That doesn’t mean it will change how much I spend each month in There, just reduces my TB purchasing power or the number of active avatars I keep.

I don’t have the heart to dig through the entire blog comments, but I suspect at least some of the ‘Charter’ members (That’s what it was called at the time) have a similar attitude (having less TB or avatars rather than just not rejoining). I think for some it just comes to knowing that the charter avatar would still be there in the future without having to pay $10/month if they are not interested in anything but the ability to come back in the future.
I can’t be sure because everyone I know from the beta days are already back online, lost RL contact or are not returning for things completely unrelated to $10/month.

    The Dogmata of There.

  22. #27 by Sniperbait on 2011.08.18 - 11:32 am

I have to say.. I have been watching and watching and trying to hold my peace, and can no more. The freckled face horror…. gee wiz. I have watched and many of the original beta testers have no issue in helping to support THERE, after all they put in countless hrs in doing such and anyone who truelly cares for something wants to see it last… So I have no issue with them not paying a fee.. after all they put in the time to make what I enjoyed and hope to enjoy again. But I do have an issue with a person who openly degrades others. Michael Wilson for all I care could be a total jerk like you have posted (Nalora) in your blog, but.. he is a business man, this is a business, and service we all want. I could be wrong but the way you have been “Nalora” from a outside stance of watching is far worse than what you have described of Michael Wilson. I run a business myself, and I do my best to treat folks with the utt most respect and to carry out the services requested, but people with an attitude like you I just count as a loss and tell to find a new company to obtain my former services from. He could do everything perfectly but after reading “ALL” your current blogs.. I must say.. who is the one who needs to get there head out of there butt and be grateful the man even brought the thing back. If everyone recalls, THERE was going under, and shut down. Now we cannot expect this reviving THERE to take off and attract new folks if all we have is the same attitude the folks in the USA have now.. GIMMEEE GIMMEEE. Just as if presbo keeps writing his loved red ink checks, and this nation of people keeps expecting more and more to be given by Uncle Sam.. the more that negative budget is going to go. So to all the original beta testers out there, you have my love all the way.. but to the ones who apparently do not care whether THERE floats or sinks, but only care about whether it affects there wallets.. GO FIND ANOTHER GAME. you can hate me, you can love me, but in the end it doesn’t matter. I will just gladly block you out of all my hoods and be done with it. You make me think of the customers “Nalora” I have seen in places like RedLobster and such, that oh no, there drink got empty for 3 minutes so they cause a big scene and go all ranting and raving to there friends in the parking lot of how horrible the place is.. If you haven’t noticed, people come and people go.. and I am sure many of us wouldn’t be phased if you just left and took your in quote “FRIENDS” with you. Like you said in your post, like minded people stick together.. so I don’t want to meet any of them like you. I never have been one to call out anyone by name but since you have kept openly doing it figured would be only fair to share your love with you. Thanks for the ability to post this response whoever moderates this, and I hope that it makes a good point, and an agreeable one. Sincerely, Sniperbait “bring out the guns and let the fun begin :)”

If any one wants, feel free to add me or hate me, all good either way πŸ™‚

I will be adding you Sniper but which name do I add?? πŸ™‚
Yes indeed, Let the fun begin!!

There cannot be free, for the exact same reason that chicken’s don’t have lips. GOD didn’t have to make the earth and the universe. But HE did, and HE said.. I want chickens in my universe, but they are so damned noise, I just don’t want them having lips to speak with.
Micheal Wilson is god of this particular world. He doesn’t have to re-open it, and to keep it re-opened, he needs money to pay for the servers and labor etc…. So Micheal Wilson said… We need to charge the users some sort of fee just to remain re-opened. If we get enough members, we can hire more people to make improvements.

THIS IS WHY IT AIN’T GONNA BE FREE!!!! Get it through your heads people!!!!!

    • #31 by Michael Wilson on 2011.08.18 - 11:29 am

      Yes.

Probably 6 – 12 months after we re-open we’ll start that process (notification, warnings, etc)

With the exception of folks under 18, who will have their names reserved until they are 18, and then some.

I just call things like I see it… And if that means telling people that the things thy are whining about is not even their decision to make, then so be it.
I admit I was a little worked up when I made my last post, but after reading hundreds of comments of mostly complaints, it did get under my skin. We should all be grateful for what is taking place here and not take it for granted!
The truth does not always come off nicely.

$10.00 a month, honestly ill go gather pop cans hehehe. But sir… Some of us or ok ill speak for myself the rest can chime in Id rather pay more. I understand it would be a pain but…. if at the end of the year ends dont quite make it then go to the overpaid peoples fund “lets call it” and cover the needed. If its not needed (as we all hope it wont be) then have a blow out party for the overpays on new years and hand out a raffel ticket or something or other and award 1 member a year free and then whatever.

I really wish to help in any way possable but not seeing much i can do Id rather be like the gov. and throw money at the trouble until it goes away. This way THERE runs forever!!!!

    • #52 by Beta2003 on 2011.08.18 - 8:49 am

But you CAN pay more!! in fact, I’m quite sure you could spend so much that it hurts! (anyone else miscalculated funds and ended up short for lunch because of buying a bunch of TB for that huge auction that you got outbid on? no? just me? doh! lol)

By leaving the base rate as low as possible, Makena broadens the reach to people doing things exactly like you suggested. I worked at a school with a multi-hundred dollar application fee (although in reality the change in economy meant that just about anyone who could secure funding got accepted so they did drop the application fee to $35), and more than a few students did things like baking cakes/cookies, deliver groceries for neighbors, to raise money for the original fee.

If Makena still supports the Ultimate gamecards when they start billing (they are not listed as supported on the UGC site right now), you could gift a membership to someone by purchasing a card electronically and sending them the redeem code. We also used to be able to pay for another member’s ‘premium’ upgrade, however it was still a manual process, so I don’t know if that would be possible for ongoing subscriptions. The member had to have already registered for that to work, not sure how it would work now.

It would be cool if we could just purchase our own virtual ThereGameCards with paypal or TB that provide codes we can share for redemption. That may also give Makena more funds (less people taking a cut of the money) and a way to manage ‘Trial’ accounts while ‘Free Trials’ are not supported. “Here have a 1 week/1 month/ 6 month membership code that I purchased/earned/won”

He ran me over one time and then got out of his buggy, I thought to help me. But no, he was only checking for damage on his buggy and then he teleported away as I lay in horrific agony.

      A β€œThere Welfare Recipient”,
I may, by some, be considered an ass kisser when it comes to Mr. Wilson, nothing could be further from the truth!
He and I have had our differences in the past but, if you have read my comments, you will see that my attitude towards him has changed, since the revival of There started.
Everyone who was on There before it closed, knew who I was. I said what I said because it was/is how I feel about the man or any other subject.
Sit there on your page, hiding behind your monitor, and say what you want, that’s your right but, when it’s all said and done, all you wanted, with your lame ass question, was the hope that, when the dust settled, you would get something for nothing.
I bet there is a great position waiting for you at YowNow. Oh, wait, if you speak your mind there, you’ll be gone.
If I know my fellow Thereians, I would speculate that you have opened a can of whoop ass. Hope you enjoy it because you asked for it. πŸ™‚
GP, xSnoopy and damn proud of it!

        Oh, NALORA,
Just wanted to put an exclamation point on my previous comment.
Your grammar and use of the English language gave you away.
We have had our run-ins in the past. I know who you are!
The ONLY 2 people who are on my Ignore list are YOU and Brad22.

“I may, by some, be considered an ass kisser when it comes to Mr. Wilson, nothing could be further from the truth!”

This really made me TROLOLOLOL. If I were to go back through the content of Mike Wilson’s blog, I’d have enough content to make a mockumentary based on you alone. I’d call it… “Depth Perception”

Nalora couldn’t be further from the truth… but you sir are the worst of ass kissers I’ve yet to encounter.

      • #66 by xSnoopy on 2011.08.18 - 7:16 pm

        Ah Even,
Your use of Grammar and the English language is second to none, whether it on this blog or NALORA’s.
Definitely a left handed compliment, but I like it.
I would suggest you “dumb” up your comments, otherwise everyone will figure out that you and NALORA are one in the same.
        Oops, did I say that?
Oh well, at least I’m not the only one that noticed the distinct similarities.

      • #67 by EvenStupider on 2011.08.19 - 2:08 pm

You’re actually accusing me of being Nalora?… The reason being we have a capacity for grammar that exceeds the 6th grade level… Well ya got me Snoopy! You know my motive is to resume playing there.com again… would it make sense for me to create an entire blog bashing its CEO, while being aware of the various methods at his hand for identifying me? Come on Kenneth… I’m not an idiot. Think with your head πŸ˜‰

      • #68 by Michael Wilson on 2011.08.19 - 2:19 pm

      • #69 by EvenStupider on 2011.08.19 - 2:22 pm

Let me guess… I used a proxy… got an entirely different hardware setup… and put up an entire portfolio site full of crappy art, lame poems and haikus to cover my tracks? Ah Ken… if not for people like you to humour me. I ask myself… would the there.com still be the same? Strictly out of a humourous itch… who was the second person to speculate me and Nalora being one in the same? Was it your partner in crime… Tiggy? πŸ˜›

It is called a trackback. He knew it was there when I sent in a comment. He chose to post it.

Despite what people wish to believe, I do have the right to my opinion, as Mr. Wilson does his. We have never met in the There World. Everything that I have gleaned about who he is or what he is about is from these blog posts and his subsequent replies. Could I be mistaken? Of course I could. Do I have the right to blog my thoughts and feelings? Yes, again.

I do appreciate all his work and efforts. This does not, however, negate my right to criticize. I do not need to LIKE the manager at the McDonald’s to buy a burger. The burger just has to be a good product.

This is not personal, its just business. —Michael Coleone

      • #73 by yankeeinthesouth on 2011.08.18 - 10:09 am

Thats all good you have your opinion but why take time out of your pizza eating day to make all of There know about it? Do you also stand outside of Mc Donalds yelling at the top of your lungs, “Their burgers suck and all the customers kiss butt!!???” I’m just not sure your motive here. So you let off some steam? You have a voice unheard in real life and must be heard online?? You want to attack MW and every Thereian on his blog??? Whatever the motive here, I don’t think you’ll be heard… Banging head on desk again, I was called a butt kisser, yet again!!!! ROFL!!!

      • #74 by Seg_Vio on 2011.08.18 - 1:29 pm

Well said Yankee! A huge mistake spitefull/hatefull people make is they can’t seperate the difference between ass kissing and appreciation. They tend to think that if you show appreciation (especially when it comes to someone they do not like on a presonal level) that they must be brown nosing.

I have seen my fair share of ass kissers in my time, the people I see here do not fit that mold…We are excited and greatfull for what is taking place.

      • #75 by xSnoopy on 2011.08.19 - 4:05 am

        nalora/kevin,
You appreciate nothing more than feeding your ego at other peoples expense!
You sit there in your booster seat, so you can reach the keyboard and take cheap shots at the people who have seemingly rubbed you the wrong way.
While you appreciate all MW’s hard work, you slam his personality. Your just barely out of your teens! Where does it say that snotty nosed children have the right to do that? You need a couple more decades just to barely qualify to judge other people.
As an ADULT, let me offer you some sage advice, TAKE A HIKE and do some growing up.

A very basic change seems to have occurred to our community, in the last 3 months.
Not just in ThereIM but on this blog.
Most of the kids have left which seems to have made the discussions a lot less contentious.
The ones who have stayed, and there are quite a few, are the mellow, laid back ones who, for the most part seem to be relatively sane. πŸ™‚
There has been an overwhelming chorus of users, old and young, that have expressed their heartfelt feelings about “going home”.
There will always be spats about various subjects but even those seem to be a lot more subdued than they used to be.
There are a few of us that now see our community as something very special and will defend it rigorously.
The few comments that have not been addressed by Michael, that have obviously come from outsiders that seem to be here to do nothing but stir up discontent, will and have been addressed by a few of us, known to speak our minds.
Actually, to me, the chorus is saying “Lets ho “home” and make this a LOT better place than we had before!
Not to bad considering the diversity of our members!!
    LETS DO THIS!!!!

MW, Just to go on record. I joined There in September of 2003 as a beta tester and so I think, as of right now if I understand correctly, would not be required to pay a monthly fee. Whether this will be true or not, I appreciate the gesture from There, I think it’s a really nice nod to that really special group of “original” Thereians.

Having said that, I would like to add (speaking for myself here): I love There very much and was saddened when it closed. I WANT There to not just break even, but to turn a profit so it can stay vibrant and not only “exist” as a bare bones operation. Like all of us, I want it continually grow and expand as the years go by and I’m happy to put my money where my mouth is. I understand the obvious truth that businesses exist to make money and what we may lack in sheer numbers of active users, I hope we can more than make up for it with the dedication of us all. So as for me, if There needs me to pay a monthly fee like everyone else, either now or at some point down the line to keep There running, I’m quite ok with that, never mind the previous beta tester agreement. It’s a small price to pay, and well worth the money.

    • #81 by xSnoopy on 2011.08.18 - 7:49 am

      Celtic,
      WELL PUT!
I doubt that any of you guys, that put so much time and effort into getting the game to where it was in March 2010 feel any differently.
Unless it is a financial hardship, and there will be some, I bet every one of you will contribute in one way or another.
It’s none of our business whether you pay or not!
I made a suggestion that Michael use some method of showing, those of us who missed out on the Beta phase, who you guys are. I don’t know any of you guys that are not proud of your Beta testing days. This would just go to show the rest of us Noobs, who helped us get to where we are.
      Thanks again Celtic!

You know what I think? I think it’s really cool that you have built this community, because it really has grown into that. I’m sure back in There you were talking with gads of peoples, but this is more direct. Given the situation I dont think anyone should be playing for free and if you really care about There and want this to work you shouldnt want to be there for free. I’ll be buying t bucks and paying a monthly fee.

That said I still don’t look like me and I just noticed that I have no clue who 80% of the people on my buddy list are. I’m not joking, I’ve never friended or even heard of some of these people.

When I was a child, I sat at the piano day by day, learning to play this song. It was not an easy task for me as I have issues reading notes and playing at the same time. That never deterred me as I adore this song.

Sadly today after reading the blogs I was thinking of this song. I felt compelled to share it with the masses. Some of us know it, and some don’t. Just watch it please.

I think we all are on an emotional rollercoaster. You can hate me or agree with me, but again my opinion. I could not really care if Avatar1234 has to pay or not, it is none of my business. We all will pay something to be on there, even if it is therebucks. Let’s show respect and give respect that is deserved all over.

It is no secret that those in other 3d communities think we are mentally questionable for even having faith in There.com. After reading the blogs with the exchange of words are so angry all I could do was cry. I don’t want to lose There again. I fear with all disdain that we can destroy the wonderful land we love so.

Can we please just allow the powers that be do their job. They are working as fast as they can, cut them some slack and just relax. The payment schedules will work out. Team Phoenix is burning the midnight oil, I wonder just how much sleep they are lacking and fatigue they are feeling.

It took everything in me to believe There again, please fellow Therians believe in me too now?

(turns off the microphone and steps down off the soapbox, and sighs softly)

    • #98 by Mark B. (Cowbellwalken) on 2011.08.18 - 3:10 am

The internet is crawling with people who THINK they’re cynics but in the end just like having the perception of being edgy or against some form of establishment. People also love to bash There because they probably didn’t play it and just saw the avatars and thought it wasn’t for them.

With that being said who cares if you’re thought of as crazy for having faith in There.com? Life is too short to care about the logic (or lack thereof) of people who waste their time bashing other things instead of making anything productive themselves. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, There is a unique product that has nothing to equal it. I’ve tried finding something similar but every other VW I’ve tried is either full of people who just want to make their avatars look pretty (males included) or have no open-exploration capability.

Either way; if you let internet opinions bring you down, you’ll find there’s always going to be another person willing to give you a harsh opinion because they can hide behind the safety of their computer screen.

      Beautifully said, Kelayna.

I don’t see why it’s such a big deal that the old school beta members won’t have to pay. It’s not like they won’t buy ThereBucks. They won’t be getting in our faces begging for freebies. They love There just like the rest of us, so let’s concentrate on more important issues like what we can do to help There continue to survive.

And Team Phoenix is awesome, I really don’t know how they manage to do it. I would have pulled all my hair out by now.

    • #100 by xSnoopy on 2011.08.18 - 7:32 am

      kelayna,
Those other “on line communities” are entitled to their opinion.
What they forgot to factor into their jealous rantings is the core group of about 3000 of us who will do what is necessary to MAKE this venture a success.
Fear not, we sometimes bicker between ourselves. This bickering does NOT mean we are not faithful Thereians!
We may cuss and bad-mouth each other, but, at the end of the day, our attitudes have not and WILL NOT change about our “home”.
We “love” our “snarky unprofessional owner” regardless of what anyone says about him or “OUR” There.

I found a weird log today at our CoLo down in Dallas – there was a rogue that bounced off this resolved domain – webapps.prod.there.com on port 710 to our range of IP’s – because one of our old clients (who I will not name) hosts at the CoLo for web app production – next cage is.. guess what.. Amazon EWS (I looked over at the cages on row 4) πŸ˜€

So guys, I think you know where you cloud is …. Amazon is in Dallas. I will have some low latency to the Web Server .. wonder if the AVMan is there too..

    • #107 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.18 - 2:01 am

Most likely Amazon has racks in multiple locations — that (along with dynamic server allocation) is what makes it a “cloud” instead of a conventional server farm.

I’m thrilled about not having to pay monthly. I view it as an investment opportunity that finally paid dividens. That’s not to say I won’t buy therebucks… I’m sure I’ll want something once I’m back in world, maybe even a paz. I’m just not in the camp that would forfeit my lifetime beta membership for the sake of making things equal. Let me put it this way, if I don’t cover the cost of rehydrating my dead pixels I’d be surprised.

LOL Mimi, I went to buy a Kindle today and I saw the Club Penguin cards. I also saw Farmville cards for Facebook and I was so surprised I blurted out loud ‘People pay for that?!” The only thing I saw that was under $10 were some magazines and some paperback books. I forgot to rent a movie but I can usually rent two for $10, so $10 isn’t a whole lot. And I’m a scrooge, if anyone were going to whine about paying money to use There you’d think it would be me. But even this scrooge is happy to pay $10 a month plus more for ThereBucks.

I am so excited over the reopening and yes I know that makes me a dork. But at least I’m a happy dork, and a paying one at that! I’ve been thinking about it so much that I remembered that I won’t be able to walk using the wasd keys and that I won’t be able to jump using the spacebar. It’s going to be like learning to walk all over again. LOL

I always said when i first joined there they must be really good with their monies to stretch that $9.95,collected from every premium player to cover their cost for the life time of the game! But that's what happened! and i expected it to be a short lifetime after implementing that program.I concider this to be a new lifetime for this game, and if everyone pays it will live long! As far as trying it out,if your asking for this option then you are probably looking for the loophole to abuse.I want this to last, and i could not stand all of the griefers that existed in world before,so Yay for the new rules and yay for the fact that its back ,and lets get the world in order and do what we came her to do!

Well the good side of it is its those very same people who went to through the history of THERE and saw THERE from the very start. So thats good enough of a reason.
and they payed more then THERE offer for it to reopen today.

  62. #124 by Beta_I_Don't_Know on 2011.08.17 - 2:34 pm

In 2004 I paid $92 to join! How many of you paid that? I have no idea if I have a lifetime membership! In 6 years, I do know that I spent nearly $10,000 in buying T-bucks only from There.com. I wanted my money to go exclusively to There! I only hope Mr. Wilson that it helped some how! I did not mind the lose of my investment when There closed. I only had my heart broken when I lost all my friends! They say, time heals all wounds. Sure, but there is a hole left in my heart. I can only hope my friends will return when There reopens! Are it will be a really bad time!

    • #125 by Jordy26 on 2011.08.17 - 3:38 pm

I joined in 2004 also but I don’t remember any membership costing $92. Best I can remember was the regular $9.95 I think it was. But it was a great investment, and cant wait for things to re-open!

      • #126 by Camel on 2011.08.20 - 1:40 pm

I don’t believe there were any lifetime membership plans after the 2003 beta lifetime was no longer offered until after Black Friday. It was a monthly, quarterly, or yearly subscription fee – and you had to pay extra for voice, explorer pack, etc.

    • #127 by justagreatguy on 2011.08.17 - 3:53 pm

Everyone says time heals all wounds, that is not true at the least. It never heals, we just learn to live with it.

  63. #128 by Eatings on 2011.08.17 - 2:31 pm

I agree with the donation tab. Why not add it and gain some extra money where people won’t expect anything back? Good way to get a couple extra bucks. (:

  64. #129 by Jordy26 on 2011.08.17 - 2:15 pm

I’m glad There is returning. Simple as.

But one thing I would love to see (when There opens) is the change from 50 to 100 drops within Neighbourhoods. Seeing as we are in ‘The Cloud’ now, so that should help with the loading issues.

Of course I am not asking for any immediate change, just continuing the same request we had before There closed.

    http://www.here4there.com

    • #130 by Escape on 2011.08.17 - 3:44 pm

Yea and we pay for more drops for sure ‘tu

    • #131 by ant1977 on 2011.08.17 - 5:23 pm

When There closed neighborhoods did have 100 drops except for the space hoods which still only had 50 drops because they had to have a floor.

  65. #132 by Mister_Sinister on 2011.08.17 - 2:13 pm

I think you all should pay the same if beta or not if you love the game then it should be no big deal to pay 20.00 thats what I would pay get back in lol:)

  66. #133 by justagreatguy on 2011.08.17 - 1:33 pm

    Mr Wilson,
If There had a Paypal Donation Tab the the members could hold events of some kind and donate the money to There to help There out. I would be glad to help out!! I think we all need to work together to make sure There stays here this time. Also the ones with free accounts that want to pay could threw the Paypal Donation Tab. Sorry I keep bringing this up but I think it’s a great idea that needs to be looked into.

It matters what Mr. Wilson wants. I seen posts with lots and lots of

    Please stop!

Mr. Wilson made his decision a long time ago and it’s his to make. It would not benefit any of you if you brought the Jonses down to your level anyways!
It’s thinking like that that has got us into this McDonalds economy to begin with.
Lets move foward and only worry about what it takes to help move this foward till completion! That way we ALL benefit!

  69. #138 by Here in there on 2011.08.17 - 12:59 pm

Can someone give me a quick answer , yes no, or not sure, ?
Because i dont get how everyone is trying to explain it to me sorry,
Will the lifetimers not have to pay 10$/month?

    • #139 by Jordy26 on 2011.08.17 - 1:54 pm

Correct. The select few back from 2003 have a ‘Lifetime’ membership which they were given back then. It appears MW is going to keep to that and those few members will NOT have to pay the $10 a month.

However those members that have this im sure are very dedicated members which will probably choose to pay $10 a month like everyone else, although they don’t have to.

I think its fair enough, I am not in those select few but I am from 2004 registration and given the chance, I’d still pay the $10 regardless too.

      • #140 by Camel on 2011.08.20 - 1:35 pm

The 2003 beta lifetime membership was not given away; the plans started at $30, and most paid more to get discounted therebucks with it.

    • #141 by Biggiedude420 (John) on 2011.08.17 - 2:00 pm

some will some won’t im sure your will be notified by email

    • #142 by Joselyn on 2011.08.18 - 5:45 am

It’s not really “lifetime” members….it’s “lifetime BETA members”. If you were a BETA tester before the world was open to the public you are free. People that purchased membershps after that called “lifetime” are not, at least that is the way I understand it from the above post of Michael Wilson.

    • #146 by Jordy26 on 2011.08.17 - 1:57 pm

Guessing it will be the same as ThereIM.

They fix everything they can now. Then start selecting a few people to help test inside the world, and when they feel its ready they release the download link. Im sure the servers can handle the requests no problem so should be fine when available.

I’ll just be excited if someone designs some sort of resurrection T-Shirt or something I can buy to commemorate the reopening when it happens. I see this reopening as a chance to cull all the “chaff” from There and start anew with people that want to be there, want to pay, and want to make it what made it best. There’s just no substitute for a world with real world physics and a wrap around globe. Round the world road trip anyone?

  76. #154 by freakygirl_tps on 2011.08.17 - 11:44 am

Hey, $9.95 is cheaper than what i pay to play WoW. which is like $15.99. I don’t mind paying, even thought I’ve been playing since 2005. i think i payed like $80 for the year when i joined, something like that. haha, but its not too bad of a price to get this game back πŸ˜€ I also agree with some other people that everyone should pay, it would benefit the game more. But, whatever happens, happens. πŸ˜€

  77. #155 by Egern on 2011.08.17 - 11:38 am

I have a fast question Mr. Wilson πŸ™‚

I read in an earlier topic that all the migrations were complete. This is where i ask, if anything went wrong? because i have lost some of my clothing, its not to put you under more pressure than now, but is that something you ot another employee can check up on ? its some of my favorite clothing im missing πŸ˜›

    • #156 by Jordy26 on 2011.08.17 - 1:59 pm

I’ve heard others say about missing items but I don’t think they really have time to go into specific accounts and check on it. So I’d recommend waiting until they are finished fixing bugs and world is open so you can check again then (may have come back by then) or they have more time to look into it.

  79. #158 by Jon Brohaugh (puter_head) on 2011.08.17 - 11:19 am

    Wow… has the hate bagan?

Being an original beta member myself, who has paid in more ways than cash to be here, I can’t believe the hatred towards the people who came into this originally to help. I don’t want a free membership… and I don’t remember seeing many other beta members asking for that either.

The comments about only paying 9.95 for a lifetime membership shows how clueless many of you are… un-informed is a more proper word… sorry.

What I would like to see is a bit of respect for people however!! I am almost angered reading hate comments directed towards a group of people that happened to start before the rest. I think a great many of you should grow up and talk about things worth talking about. So a few get in for free. Big deal. Worry about something that happens to be your business, and something thats helpful.

Stop throwing flames at folks that happened to join before the rest… trust me, it really isn’t thier fault!

I don’t want my account to be free… but thanks to whomever for deciding that maybe this group of people deserved something for what they went through back then. I love There as much as the next person, most likely more so. That is why I stayed up 18 to 20 hours a day for most of 2003, 2004 and most of 2005 testing and helping those new to There. I don’t want free… but how about some respect??

I am soooo far from special!! But the group of people that helped begin this are special, they call them beta testers by the way. You can have your opinions of pay or not pay… but maybe you should all voice them with respect towards these folks.

    Absolute silly…

    Just my 2 cents…

    • #159 by Michael Wilson on 2011.08.17 - 11:25 am

      Exactly.

Unless you tell them, there’s no way anyone is going to be able to tell who the “Beta” members are, and who they aren’t. You’d be better off trying to guess the gender of the person on the other side of the avatar than their member program.

There are only two classes in There, or There2: Pretty people, and all the rest. Well, 3: Pretty people, their dogs, and all the rest.

Everything else is just irrelevant. πŸ™‚

      • #160 by Hoverbiker on 2011.08.17 - 11:44 am

I have posted twice so far on your blog regarding the Pretty People in other threads only to be ignored by you, Mister Wilson.

I suppose that is your way of informing me that I am NOT one of them.

        ‘sad

      • #161 by Michael Wilson on 2011.08.17 - 11:51 am

Pretty People don’t require external validation. They just know they’re pretty. Inside, especially.

You just reminded me of a scene in “Rio”: “I’m a pretty bird. I’m a pretty bird. I’m a pretty bird”.

      Michael and Jon,
If I said anything disrespectful, it was never meant to be that way.
I have been on the Beta side of the fence a few times and I know how frustrating that can be.
I do have a suggestion Michael:
You obviously know who those 271 Beta lifetime members are. Whether they elect to pay or not is irrelevant. How about some method of marking their name tag that we be able to recognize. Like the way you marked the “Green” There build in late 2009 or early 2010. That way we will know who they are and they will get the recognition they deserve.
      GP, xSnoopy

      • #165 by SaltySilver on 2011.08.17 - 4:42 pm

Some may want to keep their payment or Bata lifetime (which they paid for) “free” membership personal. People can always go to an avie profile and see someones Membership Date.

      • #166 by Kayleigh Lace on 2011.08.17 - 9:05 pm

By recognition they deserve – so folks who have been very vocal about their contempt – can carry that into the game and hassle and harass on a daily basis?

Sounds like a really bad idea.

Paypal is a much safer option anyway as you don’t have to show your credit/debit or bank details and you are covered with Paypal….Everyone should use Paypal, its used in most big department stores on line and it is much safer way of purchasing anything over the internet. I have used Paypal for years and I’ve never had any trouble with it.. I think EVERYONE should pay the monthly fees regardless of whether you are Beta or not!! Being greedy and expecting a free ride is what caused There to close in the first place, so come on people and play fair!! Michael Wilson is doing his best to re-open it and up until now he has stood by his word, so should all of us!!. We all did the survey, we all agreed to pay for monthly subscription and if you are REALLY over 18 then there should be no problems honouring that.

I have to say/admit, I did have my doubts and I was a little dubious as to whether Michael Wilson would actually do as he said he would and I apologise to him for doubting him. I think if we all pay the $10 a month, There2 can continue to keep us all entertained for many yrs to come…..plus paying the subscription will keep the idiot grievers and the under 18 out and make There2 a much more relaxing and enjoyable place for all us(cough) 40+ ooops I meant 18+ players lol. So stop the bickering about paying the fees and lets just show our appreciation, gratitude and support to Michael Wilson and all the There2 team. πŸ™‚ Things don’t run on thin air, so don’t expect it to!!! My buddy list seems to be growing…does that mean all of those old friends are among the 3,245 that have signed back up to reclaim their avatars? I’m seeing some names of people who dropped out of sight years ago!

    • #185 by Jordy26 on 2011.08.17 - 10:24 am

Only people that are coming back to There and claimed their old avatar will show up on your buddy list. So if 10 more of your old friends signed up right now, you’d have all 10 suddenly added to your buddy list.

      • #186 by JasonMK on 2011.08.17 - 6:14 pm

I guess when i read the following from MW I just assumed the same for your buddy list as your ignore list. Guess not. Buddys seem to be added even if they sign back up after being restored (they got to my avatar pretty early on in the batches).

“When your Buddy and Ignore lists are restored, the Ignores will be re-ignored only if they have already registered. That means that if your ignoree joins after your buddy list is restored, you will have to re-ignore them.”

Thanks Jordy for taking the time to reply.

Michael, to clear things up about the PayPal deal. will memebrs have to have a verified PayPal account so their age is already verified or will they be able use the non PayPal member Credit Card payment system??? Since you don’t have to be 18 to have a credit card, you can even get the prepaid cards at places like Wal Mart even easier than you can the old Game Cards that any age person under 18 can buy.

Asking to see if people need to get ahead of the game and go ahead and get a verified account instead of waiting till the last min.

I have an opinion, Lets be honest here with America’s economic debacle how can we as consumers think that we can still maintain a lifetime membership anywhere? I have seen television commercials advertising lifetime membership or lifetime guarantees on their products and two years later the company closes down. There.com has reopened, and for me I paid a small fee for lifetime membership when there close down My membership ended.
when I put my credit card down on the table to purchase items I knew if that Program closed I wouldn’t get any of that money back. I say that after reading some of the blog some complaining they have spent lots of money, I’m sorry but that is just the way it goes you are purchasing pixels on a website and once that program closes you have nothing to show for your purchases… I Understand this and I would hope most adults would understand also.
I am just happy for these Reasons.
    1. There.com has re-opened.
    2. I get my inventory back .
    3. I got to see old friends I made in There.com
    4. NO MORE KIDS
    5. With everything going on in the World I’ll have a program I like re-opening and I’ll able to just goof off online in a clean safe enviroment.

Here is my 2 cents.. We are all adults here are we not? If your not an adult then yeah you want everything for FREE, if you are an adult then you KNOW NOTHING IN LIFE IS FREE! Why should There be any different? I also think it is really no one else’s business who pays and who does not. Also let’s not forget who owns There and Makena. Michael Wilson does. It’s not up to us how he runs HIS business. Sure we can give our suggestions or voice our opinion, but that’s all it is, and opinion. It does not matter nor bother me if Beta members does not pay. They earned it. Momma always told me, worry about yourself, and not others business.

Most, if not all of the Beta Testers I know who are returning to There (and believe they have a “Free Lifetime Membership”) are returning with cash in hand (myself included) to spend in There once it opens to contribute to it. I merely wanted to know beforehand (because I am on a tight budget) How MUCH money I would need to have in hand. One of the first buttons I clicked on in There Central was “buy therebucks” So that I could contribute right away. Many of the original “Lifetime Beta Members” are some of the oldest and most creative people in the Developer’s Program.

I had heard many rumors and the rumor mill was at a fever pitch yesterday, so I merely asked for a clarification. Instead I feel I got tarred and feathered and run out of town.

    sincerely,
The Avatar Who Died In Beta
now a “There Welfare Recipient” who will be spending at least 20 real US dollars in There despite being “Free”

I am sorry you feel that way, I didn’t mean to railroad you. I am just upset that the beta version people are not helping out like all of us are. Spendeing money as we all will , well we all will. I can get a break but i am not taking it. I suggest you all do the same and contribute to a great gift that we all get back. Much love and keep the game growing.

Nalora…you shouldn’t feel like you died in Beta. The Beta members know who they are and are proud to wear their badges. So keep your chin up and your beta sippy mug held high.

Its a bunch of nonsense now. You don’t have to answer or explain anyone or anything to people like Cyndi who have nothing to do with their time but hate on other people. She doesn’t know who is helping and who isn’t and is quite delusional and jealous for what I don’t know….maybe she need to find another vw to dwell in. The leader has spoken. Contribute what you can, when you can, if you can and enjoy There for what it is…..entertainment!

Can someone please explain to me why people seem allergic to paypal? Other than the few minor exceptions of people who are in countries who do not fully support paypal.

Isn’t paypal MORE secure than a credit card? Aren’t their more options available to you as a paypal member? I personally find paypal a lot simpler, AND I have it set up to come straight out of my bank account if I do NOT have the money already in my paypal account. This means it works the SAME way as my debit card did for There, just without having to re-enter my security code.

Maybe I’m just niave but why do so many people have issue with this?

The only question I DO have for MW is: I’ve not used paypal to pay for anything monthly, will we be required to pay manually each month, or will There be able to send a bill to our paypal each month that will automatically be paid?

    • #204 by GaryBob on 2011.08.17 - 10:03 am

I can’t answer for There, but my Netflix bill is automatically paid each month… though not for much longer πŸ˜›

ive never used paypal..but looked it up and did some reading..it was so very easy to set up and im very happy to use it

    • #206 by knighthawk101 on 2011.08.17 - 11:02 am

Well I didn’t intend to explain my particular “allergy” but since someone asks then here goes. I too once had a nice paypal account where i could go online and buy all the nice things from ebay that I wanted until one very dark and dreary, stormy day I was robbed through my paypal account for over 500 bucks. In one fell swoop I lost all trust in paypal, as I’m sure you can imagine. More secure than a credit or debit card? Heck I don’t know but I’m having a hell of a time talking myself into using paypal. But at the end of the day, if that is the ONLY option then I’ll make it work somehow. Folks, just understand, there are legitimate reasons to have an “allergy” to paypal.

      • #207 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.17 - 3:09 pm

Your reason is the most common one for distrust of PayPal. Unfortunately, as you note, they lack some of the protections Federal regulation requires for credit and debit cards. I once read that the best way to use PayPal if you’re very concerned about possible loss of funds is: set up a dedicated checking account (at a different bank from your primary account, so the bank can’t “helpfully” dip into your rent-and-bills money to pay for a hacker’s toys) for PayPal use only (easier when free checking was the rule, but still not a huge expense for most), don’t link any credit card (use the debit card from the checking as the “backup funding source” they try to force on you), and don’t maintain a PayPal balance. You can’t lose more than is in the bank account plus, at worst, a couple NSF fees (which you can likely get your bank to refund if you can show the transaction that caused them was unauthorized).

Of course, you have to keep enough funds in the checking account to pay for anything you might put on PayPal (like There membership fees)…

      • #208 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.17 - 3:12 pm

Oh, yes, and go back and look at the cartoon Michael posted a week or so ago about what *really* makes a good password. Then read everything you can find about how to avoid phishing, website phaking, and other methods of obtaining the information you shouldn’t be giving out.

      • #209 by Melody_Chase on 2011.08.18 - 11:15 am

That was always my biggest fear too and why I never linked my accounts that I pay bills with to the paypal account. Completely separate dedicated paypal checking account is definitely the way to go.

    • #210 by Lela on 2011.08.18 - 12:18 am

My husband and other members of my family do not like PayPal’s politics because PayPal is known for being hostile to the Bill of Rights in the US Constitution.

Other similar services do not have such a political agenda. Perhaps There should consider accepting the alternatives the similar alternatives as well.

Will we be able to see our old hood, Fun Zone deeds while in There IM or will we have to wait till the 3D world is UP? Last night I looked I could not see those items, only clothing appeared on my inventory. I ask so I can transfer it to my preferred avatar and dump my mules.

I apologize if this was answered already on a prior post but I missed it somehow

    • #212 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.18 - 2:07 am

You can only see “clothing” type items (including hair styles etc.) in ThereIM. You can’t use any other items (hoverbikes, PAZ, Two Team Signs, etc.) in ThereIM, so to keep the program manageable, they aren’t displayed. If you check your transaction history (available from your profile), you’ll likely see most if not all of your old items, including deeds to real estate/houses/clubhouses, listed there as they were “sold” back to your recovered avatar.

Only clothing items can be seen within ThereIM. Items such as buggys, deeds etc.. they are all worthless in ThereIM as you cant use them, so it was designed not to show them.

When the world is available, thats when you can see it all.

Just a few things about Paypal. You don’t have to transfer money into you paypal acct. to pay with it. You Do have to have a verified account with your bank which will take 1-4 business days. Then you can pay with paypal and they will take the money out. Will save MW some money and headaches

    • #217 by Jordy26 on 2011.08.17 - 2:04 pm

      Debs4u is completely correct.

So anyone looking into setting up a PayPal account i’d recommend you do it now or soon so its all there and ready for the return of There. Like Debs said, it will take 1-4 business days to verify your linked bank account.

Not to fight over the decisions that MW makes. Please, I just want to see There up and running so please let MW work on that and respect the rules he makes.

I can see that there are a small things as well as large issues and kinks you are dealing with in bringing There.com back to all of us. I very much appreciate all the hard work you and your team are doing. But I also remember how happy people were that you were bringing There.com back to us, because of all the fun, and friendships it had brought us. And now I’m seeing quit a few people really going on about petty issues, I honestly don’t get it! Well just a bit of my 2 cents, into the mix. Thanks again Michael Wilson and your great team!!

  105. #227 by Mark B. (Cowbellwalken) on 2011.08.17 - 8:41 am

Looking around the comments over the past few days I’d swear we’re looking at the next season of “America’s Next There GP – 3D World Edition.”

But that’s its own can of worms labeled “Look at me! Look at me!”

Regardless, I’m appalled by the amount of people who have this sense of entitlement who think they deserve to not have to pay. I don’t care if you’re part of the original Beta or not, if you feel like you don’t have to pay (even if you don’t) then it really says how much you truly care about this game and keeping it around. I know there are just as many Thereians who do legitimately care about the game who will donate if they don’t have to pay; and that’s the kind of attitude that people need to have so that the world doesn’t collapse in on itself again.

We’re lucky to have a CEO as dedicated as Michael Wilson (for those of you who continuously misspell his name) and even more lucky to have

a team as dedicated as we do working on the project to bring the world back to us. That being said; we aren’t “owed” anything by anyone associated with the There project. Are they here because we can make it successful with enough members? Sure, but we’re not putting our necks out there to take the risk to ensure that the project accomplishes what it set out to do. To all the whiners and the folks who think they’re the biggest There fans ever, patience speaks more volumes and persistence does.

There is my second home; and I want it back just as badly as everyone else… but all of this “me-first” crap needs to stop.

Keep up the good work MW and crew, and thanks again for another update.

Wow, just shows nothing causes stress in ANY relationship like the discussion of money, who has it, has to pay it, and who does not. Suffice it to say that most ANYONE could make a case for not having to pay, or pay the full price. “I spend thousands of Tbux”, “I was the top developer”, “I hosted the most events”, etc, etc, etc. Come on people, let’s get past the money thing (which we all new about from the beginning” and move forward. There 2 is a bargain at $10.00 per month as there are virtual worlds charging much more for much less content.

MW specifically asked to download and use the ThereIM only if you are ready to pay the monthly fee, and he said there was gonna be a monthly fee. I don’t understand this continuous complaining and hair-splitting. If all members had to pay $10/ a month, what would you be paying? $10/month, right? If beta whatevers were free and everyone else was $10/ month, what would you be paying? $10/month. So, at the end of the day, you are still paying $10/ month no matter what policy was in place!!! Sheesh….

    • #239 by Charlene Durbin on 2011.08.17 - 11:24 am

I was thinking the exact same thing myself. If the Lifers do or do not have to pay, it doesn’t make any difference, it’s STILL the same amount coming out of your pocket. And besides that, take a look at all the Lifers who have stating that they are more than willing to pay thier fair share. Instead of folks ragging on them, they should be thanking them for being so generous and willing to help keep the world open for everyone. So, that being said, I would like to thank the Lifers for what they have done and will do, thank you Michael Wilson for having the courage to go through with this re-opening, and thank you Samsyn, Bruce, and anyone else who is working their ass off to get this project going. I have sent two emails to Feedback@thereinc.com. First email sent on 8/11 requesting help setting up legacy accounts. Sent another one today requesting help setting up legacy accounts and included the above error as well. I didn’t receive a response back from my 8/11 email. No, it didn’t go to my spam folder. Too soon yet to see if todays email receives a response. I have tried since 8/15 to get three of my five legacy avatars re-registered. Succeeded with two, so yes, I know how the process works. I know another person who is having the exact same problem re-claiming their legacy avatar. Was hoping a fix for me would also be a fix for them. I am hoping todays email will get a reply back, but I am beginning to believe I must be at the “back of the line”, “out of the mob”, not one of the “Pretty People”, and that my un-claimed avatars are living in that rusted out server. lol

I hope when remembering we are all grown ups Mr W, you’l remember we all need lots of there bucks to top hoods up and other property’s, what i am getting at is please do not put limits on this, for some using our credit or debit cards is the only way to do it, after all for myself ? im err 41 yes ok i’m old lol, don’t need pocket money hand outs ( my money at that,) its insulting, i never liked that b4, the limits thing i mean , only reason i bough there bucks from the dealers in there was there.com would not allow me to buy several hundred thousands etc all once. 18 plus to me mean we are indeed adults so please do not take our choices of making adult decisions away , this also includes how much at a time we want to have. πŸ™‚ at least please consider my coments. many thanks.

Right now, PayPal is the only service we will have. I know this is a problem for many but:

. Maintaining Credit Cards on our servers is very expensive, because of the certifications we have to get, and all the overhead in maintaining them. It’s a real PITA (as it should be).
. Game Cards are a great way for Minors (<18) to get in because there's no way to validate the person’s identity, or block them with any sort of consequence.

In the future this could change, but that’s why we are where we are.

      • #261 by martin71 on 2011.08.17 - 7:50 am

what about them gaming cards you had on there.com could you still use them??

I understand why the Game Cards can be an issue as well as the only way to pay for membership is by PayPal. What my concern is the policy for PayPal. What is your policy on the use of PayPal? If I use my debit card to pay for my membership and for some reason it doesn’t go though, who do I ask for help? Also, what happens if PayPal is down and my membership is due? Will there be an extension until PayPal fixes there issue? Also, in order to find out if we are adults will you be asking us to give out our ID? Some virtual worlds i.e.: IMVU and Second Life have a system to identify us if we are adults. If you were able to get the system to use, would it be possible to also use the game cards?

Thank you for the time in reading my questions and concerns. I understand if you don’t have the time in answering my questions since you get over a hundred everyday and your very busy bringing the 3D world back as well as working on ThereIM. I just want to make sure that my personal information isn’t going to be taken. I am not a huge fan in the use of credit cards because of Identity Theft. After watching the news that SONY got hacked as well as Citibank, I sometimes get worried if my personal information is safe anymore.

      • #265 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.17 - 2:58 pm

Coolnet, my experience with PayPal (I’ve been a member for something like nine years) is that they’re extremely reliable; I don’t recall ever wanting to process a payment and finding the web site (or its extensions like checkouts) non-functional. In fact, they’ve been more reliable than my own bank’s web site (and they were around before the bank I had then had Internet banking — the bank was still on a dial-up system when i joined PayPal). The only major problems with PayPal are that some people don’t trust them (well, some folks don’t trust banks, either, and keep their money in an old condensed milk tin or the like), and they don’t play nice with certain prepaid debit cards that replace bank accounts for folks who can’t open an account (for instance: if you have an old student loan in default, or had an account closed in an overdraft state that you haven’t paid off because of a dispute or because you can’t spare a dime — okay, this last isn’t a good candidate for There anyway — you’re likely to find it impossible to open an account at a mainstream bank).

Even folks who can’t open an account can set up PayPal, but they’ll find it very difficult to get their account verified, and it may require some creativity to get funds into the PayPal (give a friend cash and have him/her send you a matching amount via PayPal, perhaps). It’s not as easy to run a PayPal account without some kind of linked bank account as it used to be — but it’s not impossible (I don’t think)…

      • #266 by Reo on 2011.08.17 - 9:10 pm

        @ImageMaker

Well, be fair. It’s not just that some people don’t trust PayPal. It’s that there are many documented cases where PayPal has frozen someone’s account with thousands of dollars that can never be reclaimed, with little or no justifcation given and not even any clear way to contact them about it. I’ve used PayPal from the start as well, first as a merchant and now as a regular end user. PayPal is convenient without a doubt, but as a company they definitely are a bit dodgy as well. The best idea for most users is probably to use a credit card through them and never keep a large balance in your PayPal account at any time.

Unfortunately, I’m in Japan now and I can’t do that. PayPal has recently made a push into the Japanese market, but they still do not work well with Japanese banks. As long as THERE only accepts PayPal, I expect I’m going to have to go through some rigmarole every month where e.g., I send money to someone in the USA, they PayPal me some money back, and then I send that on to THERE. A bit annoying, but not insurmountable.

Sounds great, and reasonable. However I wish there was an alternative method of payment for people who live in countries that literally cannot create a PayPal account, not even on the list of countries. BUT I guess I’ll try to pay through a friend’s account.

    Keep it up!

I think everyone should pay to use there.com regardless of when they came onboard in my view it creates a them and us mentality, it already has. as for oh it cost ppl a lot to join , it cost everyone money to join as a premium member. and i know as a whole, we have all put large amounts of money in the past into there.com, for me i always felt it was worth it. il put it another way, while i was on there.com, i use to spend less then 10 minutes every two or three weeks on sl, so yes for me i have and had no complaints at all about spending my money in there. you pay for the experience, just decide how much the experience is worth to you. it is not an investment, its a form of entertainment πŸ™‚ peace friends.

      or

They were working on things at the time and just a general access denied type of situation until they fixed things maybe.

I’m sort of wondering the difference between β€œv1_beta_lifetime” and β€œv1_beta_lifetime_prepay”. Is the former like VIP lifetime members who didn’t need to pay or just another name for the same thing? I’m pretty sure I’m in the prepay one since I paid for it (I think it was $35) when it was being promoted and most people are in that group.

I sort of feel guilty taking advantage of lifetime while not being financially stable enough to buy T$, but I’m working on it and I’ll be happy to buy T$ once I get my entertainment budget back. Maybe there should be a list of not-so-obvious ways to support There, for example like getting friends to sign up and pay (I know a couple of my friends who weren’t lifetime members and are willing to pay the $10/mo), or as little as making T$ transactions where some of it disappears (e.g. auctions or purchasing official products) and creates a very slight increase in T$ purchases. Another idea: My There first year anniversary T-shirt (real life) is getting really worn out, so if I can buy a new one or similar I can put that in my clothing budget, plus it has the bonus of sparking conversation and possibly getting more people to sign up.

  125. #287 by Lynn on 2011.08.17 - 5:57 am

Mr Wilson for the billing will we still beable to pay with the pre paid cards we can get at walmart and other places or will it just be credit cards only ? in other words how are you going to accept payment as not eveyone has a credit card

    • #288 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.17 - 2:49 pm

This is a legitimate question, I think — if only because Green Dot and AccountNow cards don’t seem to play nice with PayPal; if PayPal is the only way to play, folks who have those cards instead of regular bank accounts will have trouble paying. Whether that’s enough potential Therians to matter, I don’t know…

  126. #289 by jerzeesweetheart on 2011.08.17 - 5:44 am

While i think it would be awesome to have a free membership, in the long run WHO CARES!? I’ve read all the posts and have seen a lot of the lifetime beta members say that they would be willing to pay. It’s there2, not there so i agree it should be a fresh start. . and in the long run, im sure everyone would rather pay the measly 10 dollars a month than have the heart break of march 9 again! I also really like the idea of the donation option. I would definitely donate if it would keep there running longer. It would be like a “donation jar” in there πŸ™‚ ………….and everyone stop complaining about the 10 dollars a month. 10 dollars a month only gets u 1 salad, less than a quarter of a tank of gas (in nj anyway!), 1 movie, 1 drink at the bar………sacrifice it people , JUST PAY UP AND SHUT UP!!! πŸ™‚ just saying! good job michael, bruce and samsyn πŸ™‚

  127. #290 by Skyefire on 2011.08.17 - 5:29 am

My hope is that the very few people who are still drooling to play 8 years later will be willing to fork out for T$ regularly, as they are, hopefully, the most rabid fans. I am sure that several of the Lifer accounts are also alts so will not be logged in at the same time as each other. I know they still take up space, but hopefully cost a little less that way.

  128. #291 by Analogrival on 2011.08.17 - 5:20 am

I may have a lifetime membership but I intend on buying plenty of T$ for new hoverboards.

I might as well set up another bank account for auto refills…

I assume I can considered one of the registered people if I managed to reclaim my old account. Is it correct that as I’m not a GP I need to sit tight and wait for an announcement that There is open again or can I register to become a Beta tester? I’m prepare to pay the subscription fee.

I missed out being a Beta by days because of a lost invite or my own fault who cares. I’m a “lifetime Preme Member ” That was then ..this is now. I’d pay to get There back..Darn tootin. I wish I had a beta title and privs..don’t but oh well. ( I would like that cool Beta drink mug). I played lots of Games and paid why not this place I really Love. I remebered when it closed. I lost a Loved one then. Thankfully It looks like it was revived for a mere $10 a month what a deal! You don’t want to pay..don’t we must have missed you more than you did us, that’s ok we’ll get by without you. Those that worry because a few others don’t pay and you do..tuff so it’s more like life than you thought, get over it and move on to having fun again.

I think that any time you pay for a lifetime membership, especially for a company in a new technology (and yes, the internet is still new) you have to keep in mind that the company may close and “lifetime” may not be lifetime. Or in other words, it’s the lifetime of the company, not your lifetime. Well, There.com closed and this is a new company. As toufoyou says, you either accept the terms that the new There.com is starting up under or you go somewhere else. But stop whining.

    • #300 by Greenie on 2011.08.17 - 6:53 pm

      Real questions, not rhetorical.

Not to be pulling hairs, but IS it a new company?
Is this a newly formed and licensed business?

I thought it was the same company with the same “head” opening the same platform world with some of the same members with their existing inventory, etc.

Moving to new servers, closing the doors for even an extended amount of time, minimizing staff, changing TOS, restructuring fees and such doesn’t quantify categorizing an existing business as a NEW business.

      *DISCLAIMER*

That being said, I’ve always believed that the unlimited free memberships was the beginning of the downfall of THERE and if I do end up investing time, money or self to THERE again, THERE WILL get more than the 10$ fee from me. Even if all I do is sell my inventory, THERE’s percentage of that would quite likely blow the lid off of the 10$!

Please let us try not to lump a bunch of people into the Whiners Group just because they are THERE Beta members.

      *pokes sassydancer*

YES! Let the team do the work so that those who felt THERE as HOME can return.

@Cyndi Yonkers – I definately agree with you Cyndi. I think everyone should have to pay $10 monthly. I don’t look at it from a view of fairness, I just think that everyone should contribute $10 to support the company. It’s a very small price to pay for something we all enjoy so much.

Hi I believe I fall into the catagory of the “lifetime beta” members that will be included in the free subscription. My comment is that I would like to wave this very generous offer and still pay the monthly fee. There is very special to me (I met my husband and many wonderful friends in There) so I want to do everything possible to make it a sucess, including contributing to it financially. I know I will also be contributing by purchasing TBux but I feel that it is also good for me to support it by paying the monthly fee. Many people on here do not seem as upset about the fee as they do about a few people that helped start this wonderful world getting something for free. If you feel so “slighted” that you have to pay for something that you enjoy for entertainment, try going out to eat or to the movies or amusement park etc etc and see if they will let you in for free, bet it won’t work because they have expenses just like There. Thank you for letting vent my opinion and keep up the awesome work Michael and crew.

Here is something to think about:

“Pemium membership for life”, ran out when There closed last year. Now, the re-opening of There has new rules and new cost in effort to make There profitable and stay open longer.

Many of you, not all, got your premium lifetime membership through Coke and Cosmogirl. Not talking about those that came over from Coke Studios, etc. I know i had a couple of my alts get it through coke and I never been a member of Coke Studios.

How many of you never hesitated to spend the money for super bunny slippers, clothes, that limited gold jet or vehicles created by known designers, some limited buggies, that in some cases weren’t limited, just some scam or outright lie by some sellers to get suckers to buy their their buggies or whatever they were selling or even refills for the paint guns?

The complaint: Well I don’t have a bank account or debit or atm card to sign up for Paypal. Why not? perhaps you aren’t 18 yet or don’t have a job? If you aren’t 18 you aren’t supposed to be on there anyway. If you don’t have a job to pay for membership, how are you going to pay for the clothes, buggies, paz or the painball refills. Maybe reexamine your priorities to be self supporting, then think about There and other entertainment.

The $10/m membership fee isn’t that much to pay to keep there open and maybe profitable, renew friendships, memories, have fun continue the uniqueness of There compared to other 3d virtual communities; some of which also charge $10 a month or more to join. You do have a choice like you did when you bought that stuff through Auctions or the shop; if you thought that the items cost to much and didn’t buy it or you did buy it. You have the same choice here, If you think its worth the $10 a month you will buy it. If you don’t think its worth it then don’t buy it and move on. So the moaning and groaning about the monthly membership fee is nothing more than something to pass the time till There actually opens up and we can have fun.
    See you there!

  137. #309 by G on 2011.08.17 - 3:28 am

The people who are concerned about the free accounts of others seems like the same arbitrary complaining as those who want it to be free. It’s a business decision made by a company. An HONEST company. Regardless how you feel about it, you should probably applaud them for not being money hungry and trying to value their word. Don’t see a lot of that these days.
    Props There team!

  138. #310 by Hoverbiker on 2011.08.17 - 3:18 am

I’m glad that I’m not a lifetime beta member. I didn’t have to experience any of the really nasty bugs that exiisted before There.com officially opened in October 2003.

Then, for their help in getting There.com up and running they were offered a lifetime memebrship for 30 bucks.

Then, There.com changed the prices from around 60 bucks for a premium “lifetime” account down to 9.95. That sort of made that lifetime beta thing seem not to be all that great anymore.

Then, There.com changed the free trials to free basic membership . . . with no time limit . . . “lifetime” free basic membership. (btw, thanks for that, whoever decided to do that. It really made things so much more fun with all the alts the asshats made simply to grief, as well as cheat.) That made that lifetime beta thing seem even more worthless.

Now, some peepz are downing on the lifetime beta’s because, HEY, WAIT ONE DAMN MINUTE HERE, those things are actually WORTH something again!

I’m guessing that most of them will still be paying to play, some a LOT more than 10 bucks a month. Some of them will probably be paying the rent on some of the funzones that we ALL like to play in. I know one for certain that will be . . . and it’s a bike zone . . . ”’yay.

Yep, wtf is the problem with those lifetime beta’s, thinking they can just cruise around on their free ride? Nothing is wrong with them. Instead of whining, here’s a suggestion . . . say THANK YOU to them.

    • #311 by Escape on 2011.08.17 - 7:34 am

Hoverbiker, I’d like to correct something…Dec 2003 when I joined, it was 99.95 for ONE year (but half price was the special). So I paid 49.95 for my first year in There. (My wife joined in Nov 2003 and paid the same amount.)

And yea I agree wtf IS the problem? Thank You Beta Testers. Now let’s get on with the show!

      • #312 by Hoverbiker on 2011.08.17 - 9:38 am

Ah, yeah, I had forgotten all bout them being for only a year before they made them “lifetime”, as well as being 99.95, instead of 59.95. My bad.

Well, now they’ll be $120.00 for a year. So, even that was a bargain, looking back on it now.

That wasn’t a complaint, I’d pay double that to get back on my bike if I had to.

Will I be able to try again after afew minutes or what do i need to do? I tried to change the password and seems like something didn’t work properly while changing the password… Although I would dare to say that I’m not mistaking writing the password I changed… but it’s not accepting the restored password neither.

    Thanks you!

have you tried logging into the there.com website? try logging in there as well to see if your password works. otherwise try clicking the forgot password link.

when there one closed we all was left to search for that home feeling .we sat at our computers day after day searching for that there.com fix.
now remeber that day when we first learnt of the reopening i was so relieved the searching stoped and now it was just the waiting .
to me that that is worth the 10$ a month .
while waiting for there to open we can all be brushing up on our image editing skills so when developer program is let loose we can make the world better by submitting better stuff.
making it a better user experience
theres one site iv come across that is pretty dam good for image editing is http://www.aviary.com/#sectionadvanced

see you at the start line

Here, here. Lets move on and let the re-open There!

You said it, Escape! Let’s get that 3D World up and rockin’!

  143. #320 by David H on 2011.08.17 - 2:17 am

    I don’t understand, reasons below.

I’m glad to pay and I think anyone with a previous ‘label’ of a lifetime whatever or any other label should also pay, why?
They should want to support the re-open anyway if they were in it from the start.
It’s a pittance amount per month (heck even per year), especially for the current 10% of the population that makes up people with ‘lifetime’.
The process does not take into consideration any sort of commitment that they have ‘necessarily’ had to There, just that they happen to be there from the start, there are people who might have invested $1000’s into there but are not ‘lifetime’ anything.
    And last:
You are creating an arbitrary label for people from the start and seemingly excluding 90% of the whole There userbase (because they are not ‘lifetime’ something, they still have to pay).
If it was fair, there would be no labels, no favouritism, people would support There whoever they are.

There is possibly other reasoning I’m just not getting here, in which case I’m very confused…

    • #321 by xMelodyChasex on 2011.08.17 - 3:27 pm

There is nothing to be confused about. The fact that the betas are being singled out to me is the way MW is choosing to thank those people for investing and believing in a product he chose to create and market. I remember being in TSO and telling people about There and how amazing it is…getting people to migrate from TSO to There. I wasnt a TSO beta i didnt hate on those people that had the little globes outside their houses. Every beta deserves that recognition for their support, time, money, ideas that made There what it is today. There has never been free for me. However if MW feels the desire to reward those people it’s only fair. 8 years of my time and money went into There. Why shouldn’t I get the pat on the back. There should be an option for additional contributions from beta members and that contribution should be up to the member.

      • #322 by David H on 2011.08.17 - 8:36 pm

Disagree entirely, everything you said could also be said about non-‘lifetime’ people, sorry.
Just an arbitrary label, in the end, only hurting the bottom line πŸ™‚

      • #324 by Melody_Chase on 2011.08.18 - 4:50 am

Cyndi….perhaps you should take your own advice. You’re the one telling people to shut up and pay…and giving ‘tu for other people who say the same thing. Its annoying. You sound like an overbearing parent. I have 2 parents. I don’t need another….YOU need to let it go.

  144. #325 by Seth on 2011.08.17 - 2:17 am

Michael I really think 10$ a month is a super fair price for all of us who love There to be able to play the game we love. I really cant believe some people are complaining about having to pay. Did you guys really think There was going to come back free after the last time it was shut down was because of money issues? I really think the price is more then fair, and thank MW, and the rest of his staff for working as hard as they do.

  145. #326 by mimi06 on 2011.08.17 - 1:54 am

Lordy………..Where are all those people that said” I will DO ANYTHING” to keep THERE open? I remember the last few days/hours, hearing people bad mouth, cry, even threaten, what will it take, do it.. Well, here we are now, already to paints the doors with a huge welcome sign. Come on people. Does it matter? Team Pheonix is working hard to bring this back. Sure I see thank you’s, BUT lately I see more complaints then preschool toddlers heading out the door..

Look at the BIG picture! Your choice, smile and be happy or waste time and complain..

Join us as we wait for the Grand Opening! Get your happy feet on..

    P.S.

  146. #328 by YankeeintheSouth on 2011.08.17 - 12:34 am

I’m really not understanding the complaints about the $10 fee. Let’s see, you can design, merchant or even rent out land to cover the cost. You buy tbux, just cut out $10 a month and its covered. For the $10 you get to not only make money/tbux but you also get to paintball, drive, fly, meet people from all over the world. The entertainment is endless. If your lucky the owner of the site may pop up some where and your allowed to paintball the crap out of him. (That alone is worth the $10, LOL!!! ) With this said, how much do you pay for your cellphone a month that ONLY allows you to text??? I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, MW should of charged from the beginning. The site has to much to offer for free. I understand times are tough but it still blows my mind when people have the nerve to expect someone else to cough up the bill….

  147. #331 by William Grass on 2011.08.17 - 12:34 am

Who cares if some of the early betas get life time. If anybody really thought paying one time of $10 was going to give them a “lifetime” premium should wake up and smell the coffee. Nothing is truly free for a life, not in this universe. You whiners want some monterey jack with that whine?

  148. #332 by vaughn_2 on 2011.08.17 - 12:03 am

Well being a lifer,Beta since 2003 I will just take that monthly fee i supposed to pay and buy more T-bux to keep some cash flowing..MW maybe you could set this up with all Beta members on a monthly basis, We beta members auto pay monthly but get T-bux in return, would this make sence? I would be willing to make this change as a Beta member”Anyone else?”

    • #333 by ASK on 2011.08.17 - 8:29 am

Absolutely agree Vaughn. Stamp and I wouldn’t hesitate. I would also like to see a “donate” button somewhere in THERE Central for anyone wishing to give a little more.

  151. #337 by Here in there on 2011.08.16 - 11:05 pm

And also, some people cant afford 10$/month, and you might say “then dont play” you cant just say that to someone who loves there, if i would have to pay i would, (some months not all) but if i didnt have to pay, id be greatful

    • #338 by Wendy Stoll (Wendy50s) on 2011.08.17 - 12:45 pm

I bet almost everyone who has a computer can scrape up a lousy $10 a month. You pay more than that for fast food, for a movie, shoot, almost that much for a 6 pack of beer. Nothing is free, and there’s no reason anyone should give you There for nothing.

      • #339 by xMelodyChasex on 2011.08.17 - 3:08 pm

There costs less than what I pay for lunch in NYC πŸ˜€

  152. #340 by FemSage on 2011.08.16 - 10:54 pm

As I posted on Facebook, I would suggest (just a suggestion — up to you — either way I’m paying) that ThereIM could be free, while There3D would be paid. Once new users are on ThereIM they will come into contact with people who are in-game and it will behoove them to join up so they can build their friendships and socialize. ThereIM is just chat, but the real fun is in There3D. For example, I have to get a hold of Cartier and get the Cannonball Run back on! I loved that race.

    • #341 by Cyndi Yonkers on 2011.08.17 - 8:42 pm

I talked to Cartier and I don’t know if he is coming back. He is in SL. But I hope he does come back too!

But it will bring more people in, and like mw said, its better having less people complaining then everyone, im not just saying this because i have lifetime, but it makes sence, just think, if you had 5 cookies and there were 7 people and you gave 1 cookie each to 3 ppl, and you had 2 left it would be better to give the 2 cookies to 2 other people then just having 2 random cookies you know what im saying haha? (sorry confusing)

  154. #343 by Tiger100 on 2011.08.16 - 10:32 pm

Let the beta testers pay for monthly membership too, don’t worrie they would’t mind >:)

    • #344 by jimony on 2011.08.17 - 10:33 am

I wasn’t a beta member, but I would mind if he went back on his word now. It is too late to change his mind about this without losing a lot of credibility.

      • #345 by MrScrooge on 2011.08.17 - 12:11 pm

Exactly, Jimony. We don’t want to see Michael Wilson turn into Mr. BowNow Beforeme over at Lala Delusionalville

On that note, I actually bothered to create the YowNow group in There for a laugh. Every one is welcome to join, I won’t be doing anything with it, I just made it for a quick giggle. Mr. Wilson, it would hilarious if you joined it πŸ˜‰

      • #346 by Michael Wilson on 2011.08.17 - 12:34 pm

I dunno. I’m feeling that being snarky over answering the same question 2,743 times isn’t quite right. Perhaps I should adopt their Community Management policies? They seem to be quite effective at…uh..I dunno.

Anyway, they’re opening next month, so everyone will have another VW choice. And I hear theirs is $.05 CHEAPER than There, so I expect we’ll lose thousands of customers.

        πŸ™‚

      • #347 by jimony on 2011.08.17 - 1:57 pm

MW, answering 2,743 questions with snarky comments is unnecessary and a waste of your valuable time. Send them to me and I will answer them with snarky comments for you.

      • #348 by YankeeintheSouth on 2011.08.20 - 10:34 am

I take it you havent seen their avies, MW??? I’ll admit what little I saw of the scene is pretty nice but the avies are what bring in the customers and well…. you’ll just have to see for yourself, lol.

  155. #349 by Jordan on 2011.08.16 - 10:32 pm

Been waiting for a comment on whether or not we will be receiving anything but the ability to play for the $10/month. Now that I have an answer I can safely say that I will not be subscribing. There should be some amount of tbux added to accounts that are paying $10/month and I quite frankly don’t see why added a small amount of in-game currency so there’s SOME WAY to get tbux without pumping MORE money into the game.

Very bad decision on your part.

    • #350 by GaryBob on 2011.08.17 - 8:02 am

So how about, just for you, they toss in $5 worth of tbux every month. But your subscription goes up to $15/month. Sound fair?

Why should they have to bundle anyway? If you want tbux, go buy them separately. That $10 isn’t just some arbitrary fee. It’s designed to pay the costs of hosting your avatar, your avatar’s things, and the WHOLE WORLD. Don’t think of it as membership fee or subscription (which often come with perks). Think of it as an existence tax πŸ˜›

      • #351 by Jordan on 2011.08.17 - 3:31 pm

I simply think giving a small sum of tbux along with your subscription would be suffice to satisfy me. I understand that you think that it costs some ridiculous amount of money to run the There world, but the fact of the matter is they will be covering all their investments and then making profit on simply the membership fees alone, then on top of that I will need to be putting in money consistently to acquire anything new? I just don’t approve of paying for Michael Wilson to go on vacation.

I don’t understand why including a small sum of virtual money would be so taxing to Michael’s wallet. It would add a natural way to obtain tbux instead of it all being real life cash converted to pixels. Even in most free to play games there’s a way to obtain the in-game currency that can be bought with real cash without putting more money in, that’s all I’m asking for.

      • #352 by Charles Davis on 2011.08.17 - 7:16 pm

        Jordan,
I full respect what you have said. But say it and leave it alone. Okay you have a problem with the policy’s There Inc. has put in place to insure the success of there and yes to make a profit. There.com is a business. And the basis of any business is to make profit and yes use that profit to take vacations. Duh. So you decide you do not want to support his product and service. Fine, that is your choice. now give us the same respect and except, that our choice is to pay. I think we have waisted enough time with those you made up there minds not to pay and move on. $10 monthly pass into the world of there. that sounds like a deal to me. Take it or leave it. I paid 37.68 to enter a water park today. And can you believe it they gave me no water park cash to go with that. Then i had to pay for food, a locker and other things i wanted. But i wanted the service and product they had. So like everyone else…. I PAID!

        -Charlyy

    • #353 by Tre_Ghost on 2011.08.17 - 8:20 am

Oh no, he just lost a whole $10 a month, what we he ever do? “so there’s SOME WAY to get tbux without pumping MORE money into the game.” That would be the idea btw, they need more money pumped into the game. $10 is nothing for one person, we’re talking $2.50 a week, not even a water bill is that low.

Quite an immature response to what I thought was a reasonable post explaining as to why I won’t be returning to There. Resorting to name calling, personal insults about my family, and general immaturity. I think I’m entitled to explain as to why I don’t agree with the decision they have made as to giving away digital money.

I played There for 3 years prior to the shut down, and my parents were both quite good people who taught me well. I’m sorry that you feel so strongly about your dislike towards me because of my simple post explaining my dis-contempt with their decision and I hope perhaps one day your blatant fanboyism towards Michael Wilson will fade and you can listen to reasoning without it clouding your mind.

      • #359 by Jordan on 2011.08.17 - 3:32 pm

And even that costs money to do. So why don’t they just give me enough tbux to support my creating? Seems like a small favor to ask so I can essentially work for them.

      • #360 by Michael Wilson on 2011.08.17 - 5:49 pm

Well, I dunno. $10 is about what it costs for a relatively experienced coder to make me a guild website, along with a small list of simple requests and a nice logo. I’m not sure I’d want to give that up.

So just be thankful people. Quit crying about a few dollars that you would have spent on going to the movies and with popcorn and drinks you have spent like what 50 bucks?

100% agree. Trying to keep There afloat, he still honors the lifetime.. Kudos! I’m starting to wonder the ones complaining, are they the same ones that drove us crazy for free clothes, hair, rides etc?? This reminds me of the time I met this young girl, (guessing 15 yrs. old) she suckered me into her sad life story. My heart went out so bad for this girl. I wanted to do something nice and bought her a NH lot, house, bunnies, 20k for clothes, I dont remember all of it. Omg she was so excited, made it worth it…..until a day later I went to her place and it was gone. She sold it all! haha Then had the nerve to ask me for more, lol. I did give it to her so it was hers to do as she wished but to ask for more?? Some you want to say, take the money and buy some manners, lol. Anyways, cant wait to see you all on There!!! πŸ˜›

    • #366 by jimony on 2011.08.17 - 1:17 am

Cyndi, he said he would honor the beta lifetime accounts, therefore he SHOULD honor them. Deciding not to after saying he would would be dishonorable.
Anyone who had the beta accounts that wants to support There monthly can do so by spending that money in other areas such as zone rent or maybe even to help others who may have trouble affording it. I would also guess that most beta lifetimers have alt accounts they wish to keep running that they will have to pay for.

Personally, I think those who were a part of the first beta members and have stayed are probably the ones who spent the most and who also provided their own services to provide entertainment and information for others.

I am glad the monthly amount has finally been formally announced, but remember if it doesn’t break even at $10.00 per month it may be increased in the future.

      • #367 by Cyndi Yonkers on 2011.08.17 - 8:17 am

Hey Jimony I am one of those that bought a lifetime. I am willing to let that go. I am just saying he should not be liable as it is a new game. I think we should cut to the chase and everyone pay the 10 freeking dollars…..And I know he is an honorable guy.

    • #368 by Rebecca McArthur on 2011.08.17 - 1:25 am

I ‘tu this post and I did buy a lifetime beta membership all those years ago. I don’t think you owe an honor of a program that was sold on a now defunct world that only had a cost of around 30 something bucks in the first place. Seriously. Don’t honor any of them and charge everyone. I’ve got to believe that anyone who loved There enough to make that purchase in the first place really was bonded to the game and their avatar. I can’t imagine anyone like that would want to jeopardize the success of the new launch and would WANT to pay. I’ve got nothing but love and support for you and your team MW.

Well I think if MW does honor those life-ers,….. those fortunate people will buy T’s, purchase paz time, own a hood etc…yes! I think just maybe, these people will feel so fortunate that they will take their 10 dollars and use it to buy extra stuff…Maybe? πŸ˜‰

  157. #371 by toufovou on 2011.08.16 - 10:15 pm

This may sound bad to a few people, but all this whining “Why should I pay a monlthly fee???” and “Michael Wilson is trying to steal our money” and “I don’t wan’t to pay” and “I paid $9.95 for lifetime so I should be lifetime” and bla bla bla is really getting very very annoying. MWs tongue has grown hair trying to explain to everybody what is going on and why and has been answering the same questions over and over again.
Can’t you few cry babies just at least TRY to understand that there is no other way to get There up and running again?
If you don’t like it. then just don’t come here. Go somewhere else.
I’m sure there are dozens of free virtual worlds out there where you can go and not worry about being cheated on or treated in an unprofessional manner or whatever other comments you have used here the past few months.

  158. #372 by Seg_Vio on 2011.08.16 - 10:10 pm

To all who ask “am I one of the v1_beta_lifetime_prepay ”

If you have to ask, then you are not. Very simple.

    BTW, I am not either.

    • #373 by Kattwomann on 2011.08.17 - 4:03 am

Well that is not true. I have many avatars and eight years is a long time to remember details like that. I have three kids, putting something like that to memory was not a priority for me. Katt is a lifetime beta I’m sure, I think my hubby’s avy might be as well, but I don’t remember. Also I have an avy my friend gave me that I have no clue about!

So it would be nice if there was a way to check if we are or not.

      • #374 by Melody_Chase on 2011.08.17 - 9:59 am

Interesting idea (Melody could not respond directly to your post). I did go through inventories and was able to find two mugs. Katt had one and my alt had the other. My alt is definitely NOT beta. So that means I obviously did not leave them with their original owners. Did I have a third? Who knows? It was a great idea though! Thanks!

  159. #376 by Here in there on 2011.08.16 - 10:10 pm

So the people who had lifetime premiumship doesnt have to pay 10$/month or does have to?

    • #377 by jimony on 2011.08.17 - 1:30 am

What many of us considered to be “Lifetime Premium” accounts were simply “one-time” fees to upgrade to a Premium account.
Only the V1 (Version 1?) Betas as described in MW’s post are actual “Lifetime” accounts. I think even those accounts could have legally been cancelled, but MW is an honorable man, even if he is a “snarky” one. Considering how many years he supported There in the past out of his own money, I would guess he deeply wishes he could give “Lifetime” accounts to many more than he can.

    Well Micheal,
This is There 2 and I personally don’t care who was Beta or who was not. I think you should charge us all. Come ON PPL: it’s only Ten Dollars a month if you don’t want to pay like the rest of us then move on seriously. We want our world back. Personally I think that we are lucky to get everything back. Shame on all of you Beta’s for pursueing this. It is the same game and at the same time I would think MW should not be liable to guarantee a “Lifetime” free ticket to you. I paid that 9.95 too what makes you so special? Let them do their work so we can all get back home, which is the target, isn’t it?

    • #379 by xMelodyChasex on 2011.08.17 - 4:33 am

What makes the betas special?? 8 years…thats what. Anyone who hasnt invested 7-8 years should have absolutely nothing to say. Stop trying to make us feel guilty about being members so early on. We were investing in this world before There was There. I personally have 8 years behind me. 8 years of buying stuff….clothes, pets, vehicles, etc. helping some noobs, lending my stuff to people. Once the houses were released I shelled out Tbucks for that. I remember the launching of those houses…waiting patiently for the deeds to drop…hoping I would be one of the lucky ones. I paid for that on a monthly basis and then I invested in another house so tack on monthly Tbucks for that too. We have been here for 7-8 years. Even when I took a break from online worlds for personal issues I still paid my bills and checked in. So there’s your answer. 7-8 years if investing in the enjoyment if There. Again I proudly wear my 2003 badge.

      • #380 by xMelodyChasex on 2011.08.17 - 4:45 am

I also think that if the early members don’t have to pay the monthly fee there should be an option in there central for an optional “monthly contribution”. So that these members can contribute to the monthly pot if and when they wish without altering their beta status and for bookkeeping purposes it can be additional revenue not necessarily counted on toward the budget because the number may change. It will just be like found money. If there.com is honoring the lifetime membership those members should be entitled to take it and whether they contribute additional funds should be up to the member.

      • #381 by Kayleigh Lace on 2011.08.17 - 10:10 am

Melody – Oh, I remember the first 2 story house – and gosh, I forget exactly how we did it – we had to decorate the top floor before we could decorate the bottom – or we had to decorate the bottom and then drop the house and then decorate outside? I just remember being so excited to have my little 2 story house. LOL And I loved before the neighborhoods, finding a corner of the world where there were NO building – nothing – and setting up my little house and just relishing in the peaceful world – hopping on my buggy – trying to find my way back to my house (this was before Motu Motu made the map, IIRC). Thank you for helping me remember some of the amazing times I had. πŸ™‚

I also remember testing those roller coasters and the victorian houses that you bought by the section and could make it as big or as small as you wanted. I wear my 2003 badge proudly, too. I’ve been beta tester in so few things – it was an honor to be a part for so many years of There.com – beta or not.

But I do have to say – it sounds like some sour grapes out there. And we didn’t pay $9.95, Cyndi. Try at least 3 times that. I know – big woo – $30 bucks – but still… And not for nothing, I bet you if it hadn’t been brought up in the first place, no one would have asked. And it’s so few people – I don’t understand the outrage except that you aren’t included in that group? And heck, I don’t even know if my join date makes the cut – I’d still pay to play when I can. And still buy T-bucks for that beautiful house on the market – for another 30 days on my paz – for whatever. It’s a little shortsighted to imply we’d never pay money for anything in this game.

      • #382 by Golono on 2011.08.17 - 2:01 pm

A monthly contribution option is pointless.. If they want to contribute they can

        A. Pay for an alternative account
        B. Make a new one and pay for that.
        C. Use the 10 dollars to buy therebucks..

It’s that simple. Though a monthly contribution option sounds cool, it would be only something else to spend time to make. It’s easy to come up with these ideas but not nearly as easy to make the ideas happen.

I think that you should calm down because even if im not a beta tester I think the contract should still stand. After all MW said it was a contract right? And if he is an honest man he will keep his word, regardless the name its still the same program even if it has a 2 at the end. Plus im sure that the beta testers will buy tbux and so on. They by far are the most that understand what it takes, they were there from the beginning, and im sure they wont take playing for free for granted. Your probably just upset you have to pay and they dont but they’ve been here longer so just let it go.

      • #385 by Michael Wilson on 2011.08.17 - 7:11 am

Huh? No I said I’m not at all sure te “Lifetime” bidness was a contract.

    • #386 by ariadne on 2011.08.17 - 12:49 pm

If I remember rightly it was a lot more than $9.95 for the lifetime beta membership. It was a long time ago and I don’t remember how much it was exactly but it was a substantial sum. We certainly didn’t get in for free just because we were here in 2003.

      • #387 by Greenie on 2011.08.17 - 5:41 pm

If I recall correctly, it was about 50 US dollars for Beta members to get their “Lifetime Beta” premium accounts for the public release.
The packages after the initial Beta accounts were separate fees for explorer pack, music/voice and the basic account. Right at 20 US dollars for EACH of the 3 packages.

I’m a 2003 beta member twice over. When THERE went public, if I had had to pay for monthly membership for THERE, I wouldn’t have been able to. I’m positive that I made THERE more money each month than that ten dollar fee for monthly membership that they would have gotten without that Beta Lifetime Membership.

Even if I don’t sell another item in THERE, I’m sure they’ll get more than the ten dollar membership fee value from me.

Nonetheless, not all of us early Betas are fretting or posting about the fees. ;-P

For those of us who may struggle with finances, ten dollars can make or break us. It may be our only “frivolous” expenditure.

Keep heart and do not be ashamed to let your friends know. Some of us are all too happy to cover membership for a month here and there.

One of the aspects of THERE that I felt was priceless, was that we don’t HAVE to have or do anything within THERE that costs money outside of the membership fee. You can ride any ride you want. You can explore the whole virtual world. You can watch and listen to Live entertainment, participate in any number of games, quests, races, etc. Your avatar is clothed and you get rewards for having fun!

The first year or so of my membership in THERE, I didn’t have a tubx to spend.

Thank You Loaners 4 U and Steve Mack’s Garage!

There were so many dreams aching to be shared in THERE by so many people . I’ll be glad to have the opportunity to be a part of building those dreams again.

      • #390 by Cyndi Yonkers on 2011.08.17 - 8:25 pm

And I did pay the 50 bucks. Before that I paid the 9.95. I am on a fixed income and I will still pay the 10 bucks a month. It is so worth it for there to remain open to me. Even if I don’t eat for a few days.

      • #391 by xMelodyChasex on 2011.08.18 - 3:59 am

First, I care. I enjoy being part of the beginning of something great as you can tell.

Second, it’s not about the money. It’s about the gesture and what it represents. Stop trying to marshall people like some mother hen. People don’t need to be told by you to pay. I think it’s safe to say that most of the betas will contribute extra regardless. So please it’s really annoying and it’s not up to you. And not everyone is as fortunate to live for three days with no food to pay for there. People have obligations and families and every dollar counts. I’m lucky enough to have a great job. But glad your so dedicated.

Not sure if you should hope that the 2700 free beta members don’t show up. They could at least buy tbucks and pay for their bandwidth with the profit from their purchases. I am sure they won’t drag you down. Also they may be a good foundation of seasoned creators with more experience than others. They may have a lot of things to sell in the auction to help boost the economy. So maybe we should hope they show up. Also I am wondering if we are on the v1_beta_lifetime_prepay how do we find this out? I signed up in December 2003. I know I missed the Beta deal. How do we check if we are being honored for one of the two deals?

    Thank you,
    Jerry

I dont mean to sound impatient but when would you guess clubs will be restored?

    • #403 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.17 - 2:33 am

Condensing from prior MW posts, clubs are recreated, empty of members, when the club leader recovers his/her avatar. Depending on settings, you can join a club now (assuming it’s been recreated). There may be an option for club members to recover/recreate clubs down the line if the leader doesn’t reappear in a reasonable time frame.

Free is the new expensive. I have no idea why all these people are complaining to pay for it. If you do not care enough to pay $10 a month you should just stop worrying about it. And just go play boring Second Life. If you want to make sure that There stays open and operating you would be more than happy to contribute to the sake of There.com.

    • #408 by Jordy26 on 2011.08.17 - 10:37 am

haha, loved the “Free is the new expensive”. Nice.

And I agree, other worlds such as WoW have always been charging to play and they are one of the biggest, people are happy still. We are all getting out moneys worth.

      http://www.here4there.com

p.s – WoW I know is a bad example for ‘virtual world’ but its the idea of getting what you pay for, and $10 or $15 to play There again, a very fair deal! πŸ™‚

  168. #409 by Kendra (LilGrayFuzz) on 2011.08.16 - 8:52 pm

Anyone who still thinks There should be free needs to either:
    A. Turn 18 first
    B. Find a cheaper source of entertainment (which is hard to come by in this day and age)
    C. Build and run a virtual world for free, and see what happens
    D. All of the above.

Real life isn’t free. Why would anyone ever expect a virtual one to be?

    • #410 by Reo on 2011.08.16 - 9:30 pm

      > Real life isn’t free.

Really? Did you pay a $10 signup fee before you exited the womb? I didn’t.

But then, I signed up for real life when it was in beta. I now have a lifetime lifetime membership. It entitles me to live for the entire duration of my life. And not one second longer, alas.

      • #411 by jimony on 2011.08.17 - 12:58 am

Try not paying for food or shelter, or having a parent pay it for you, and see how long that life lasts. It is actually quite expensive to have a baby, even if you have the baby at home and not at a hospital. Just because you, as a baby, didn’t pay for your birth doesn’t mean it was free.

      • #412 by knighthawk101 on 2011.08.17 - 3:08 am

However, I’d be almost willing to bet that your parents don’t agree that you came into this world for free. Someone has to pay for everything. Albeit, I understand your point, this is just my .02 cents. ‘shrug

      • #413 by DavyRocket on 2011.08.17 - 3:45 am

What good is a free lifetime membership if There closes because people don’t want to pay the $10?
How good did it do you to have the lifetime membership when There closed?
I think MW is just trying to good by the kindess of his hart to do what he think is fair and to me that shows he is a great guy!
If he wanted every one to pay he could of called it There2.com and started all as new but he never did that.
I think There should have a paypal donate button for people that are willing to give a extra few bucks if they want to, to help keep There running this time as I think most of us do, I would throw in a few extra bucks! But I’m sure there will always be a few that just don’t care.

I think that if you decided to reopen THERE as a new business you would be within your rights to charge everyone, including those with a lifetime account. To be fair…I think everyone should start on a level playing field…they can decide for themselves if they want to remain and pay or not. I would like to see THERE become successful both on the user end but also as a business. You have put a lot of hard work and you should earn something for your effort.

    • #432 by Tre_Ghost on 2011.08.16 - 9:08 pm

Well see that’s the thing, he isn’t reopening There as a new business ppl. It’s the same There, they entered into contracts with these people that they have to honor. A lot of them are still willing to pay with that said, and I assume they will buy tbux also. I do agree with something someone mentioned, some type of VIP memberships. Since regular memberships are $10 per month, VIP could be for example $30 per month, and include some percentage more of tbux than 20 dollars would normally get you, payable 6 months in advance only. You could even have different packages that way like $30, $40, $50, etc. I’d jump on VIP if it was implemented.

      • #433 by Michael Wilson on 2011.08.16 - 9:15 pm

Technically, it’s not the same There at all, and that’s what the TOS will read. One of the things about any TOS is it can be changed to just about anything with notice. That’s just how they are written.

That being said, I don’t actually believe there’s any “contract” here, just as you don’t “own” any virtual goods. The concept of a “Lifetime” anything was silly anyway – Lifetime of what? The Avatar? You? The Business? The Sun? A Roundworm? I don’t think it actually said.

Anyway at the end of the day, we’re not trying to cheat anyone here, or make a fast buck. If you really believe that’s what we’re up to, then you’re free not to play. We’re all grown ups here now (>18, remember?) so we can make our own decisions.

Oh, sorry I thought there was a contract with the lifetime beta people, my bad. But to your last comment MW, I wasn’t complaining or insulting what you’re doing here at all. I was directing it at the people whining about the beta ppl not having to pay is all. I’d pay well more than $10 a month if it was the charge and I’d pay it yearly if that was the only option. As far as free trials, someone mentioned no one will pay if it costs up front. That MAY be true for generated traffic to the site, but I got about three dozen people who have never been willing to pay just based on my word. After all, word of mouth is always the best advertisement for any business. Would it be feasible to make a smaller separate download for people to try it for free on a small island alone with one 5 minute trial to borrow any item There sells? Make it like AOL does age verification for their chat rooms, 1 dollar credit card charge that gets reimbursed to their credit card(through paypal of course) then you could prevent a user from doing multiple free trials, plus they’d be alone in their trial and not with the rest of us.

      • #437 by Michael Wilson on 2011.08.17 - 8:39 am

The problem with the “Small Island” is if it’s in the world, then it will be with other newbies (cause that’s the appeal of There: communication), and Greifers will use that as a tool to greif the service. Heck, we used to see people who weren’t even banned make accounts just to do that (yes, I can see you over there, lurking on my Blog).

lol I hope you don’t mean me lurking cause Tre_Ghost is my only account lol, MW one quick question, cause there’s a debate on a fb page. Previously you mentioned only accepting paypal but you said we could use our credit cards to pay via paypal. Is this still the case, or do we have to have an actual paypal account?

      • #440 by Cyndi Yonkers on 2011.08.17 - 10:21 am

Amen again, and well stated. My point taken..

      • #441 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.17 - 2:35 pm

Tre_Ghost, you’d have to have a PayPal account to use PayPal to pay via credit card (and once you have it, you can select to fund a particular payment from any credit card or checking account you have verified on the account). If I’m reading right, the most likely reason for There to accept only PayPal is that that’s the cheapest way to accept credit card payments and is still open to those who fund from checking account or maintain a PayPal balance.

I can’t get the Give to work in IM for clothes, every time I try I get a *NO DATA* error.
The Avie I try to give it to is online. I tried in chat with me and not in chat with me.
Can anyone tell me if I’m doing something wrong or is GIVE not working in IM?

271 members were beta according to this post, not just 50 something, I think. Looks to me like any beta lifetime doesn’t have to pay.

That’s $2710 per month. Although some of those beta may not have signed up if it wasn’t free, of course.

Hopefully the rest of the paying members make up for that group of users. πŸ™‚

      Mickey ~ Go to

      and ask for the invitation.
Then you’ll receive an email invitation with a link. Follow the directions, and you’re in to ThereIM.
When it loads for you then you can use parts of There, like ChangeMe and Transaction History, and Profile.
      Good Luck

Although I do wish the game was free, I believe it worth the $10/mo, and I dont mind the change if this is what is needed to reopen the game. And I think it is perfectly okay for the Beta members to be free. First, they joined EIGHT years ago, and have stayed in game through all the development issues that all games go through. Second, they are the ones who played through alot of glitches and issues that other people dont like to (and would have left for), and worked to get them ironed out so WE can play Mostly glitch free. Third, anyone who has a problem with the free Beta memberships would not be voicing so loudly if they were the ones getting the deal.

    • #455 by xSnoopy on 2011.08.17 - 5:20 am

      Trinity,
I was close, but I am not a “lifetime member”.
I WANT There to succeed and I DO NOT want another March 9th to happen again.
Thus, I say, I would refuse to get my membership free.
It would be nice to have the $120.00 at the end of the year BUT the alternative SUCKS!!!!
      GP, xSnoopy

  176. #456 by Eatings on 2011.08.16 - 7:51 pm

The lifetime membership is fair, because that’s what they were expecting when they received it. Since there.com is still THERE.COM, people that paid for lifetime membership for THERE.COM should receive what they’ve thrown in for. (Does that make sense?)
Personally, I would pay $20/month. See, I love there.com. And you’d do anything for something/someone you love. You know?

MW should actually consider a sort of, VIP membership. Where people pay like $25/monthly and they can receive exclusive items, or access.

    • #457 by mmeodiles on 2011.08.17 - 6:08 am

I think 10$ for ALL people to play THERE is the way to go…Why do a VIP? If the people that play this game, not only pay their monthly fee, but also purchase Tbucks along with a paz or hood…Maybe it would all equal out in the end…I personally would start having problems affording the 25 a month for VIP..Hubby and I make 2…. which would mean 50 a month…which would mean less Tbucks or paz purchases for us! VIP to me would then be using the casting system in a small Thereian world: Oh I am VIP, I am not yada yada ….IMO
With 10 a month..you will get alot more people willing to play THERE because we would all be equal as far as receiving exclusive items and access…

  177. #458 by Reo on 2011.08.16 - 7:43 pm

Now that the world is 18+, I’d love to see little “THERE kiosks” in pubs and other public areas. Just buy one of those old imacs (the ones that look like TV sets from the future) and install a custom there client on it that auto-logins and can’t be exited, complete with some remote administration software. Set it up in a bar somewhere where patrons will see it and sit down to play with it. To the rest of the world, that avie looks like a drunken idiot so people know what to expect. To the people around the kiosk, they get to see this fun thing they’ve never heard of. Maybe you could even lock these kiosk avies into one specific zone so they can’t get out and cause too much trouble in the world.

Great cheap (almost free) way to get new people into the world, paywall notwithstanding. Something like that would be huge here in Tokyo, and I bet it’d be big in the states as well. People in bars love to fiddle with those little games they have, usually for 2 bucks a pop, and There looks better than any of the other ones usually on offer, plus you get to talk to real people. It’d be a hit.

    • #459 by Reo on 2011.08.16 - 7:49 pm

Of course, if you did that in the states, someone would probably break it. It would work in Japan, though. People are respectful of machines here. πŸ™‚

But then, you’d have to localize the client to Japanese first.

Give me an Excel file with the full list of strings and someone at Makena I can email periodically to ask what context this or that line shows up in, and I could do it. Second Life had a huge surge of popularity in Japan, mostly among people who were not at all interested in the scripting and custom modeling and all that. Most people just wanted to have a good looking avatar and be able to easily chat with strangers. There beats Second Life on those fronts, hands down.

      • #460 by PlAiNHaVoC on 2011.08.18 - 1:14 am

This would be a great idea for vendors here in the states. Anyone up to doing this? You would pay the $10 per month, set the thing up in a bar or mall, and people put $1.00 in to play for an hour… This could make money!

  178. #461 by justagreatguy on 2011.08.16 - 7:38 pm

If There uses Paypal then There should take donations so users that want to pay and can’t can still support There if they want to.
I will have to pay but I don’t mind, I want to support There because I don’t want it to go away.
We all know There don’t run on love alone!

  179. #463 by xSnoopy on 2011.08.16 - 7:04 pm

    Really, REALLY??
Sitting here, I’m wondering what I would do if my membership dated back to 2003.
I remember how I felt, that night, on March 9, 2010, when all our screens went black.
The next morning I realized that there would be no more There.
Over the next few days, the reality of what had happened became much clearer.
No more shooting Bear, Salty, Phill41 or any of the other people that I thought I had issues with.
No more Zephyr, buggies or anything else that most of us took for granted.
Almost EVERY one of us “old timers” have expressed HOW MUCH we miss all those things we enjoyed doing in There.
    $10.00 a month? $120.00 a year?.
It costs more than that to buy one ticket to a movie today.
I understand that there will be some of you that were Beta testers and that those dollars could be better spent on meds or food.
But the vast majority of you won’t consider paying for a monthly membership, a hardship.
To be totally honest, I would say, screw the lifetime membership!
To get back what we had, I would gladly pay the $10.00 a month and just be happy that Michael has given us another chance to enjoy what we lost 18 months ago.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!! πŸ™‚

    • #464 by Reo on 2011.08.16 - 9:12 pm

My problem with the new pay-to-play model isn’t that it’s too expensive. Of course every one of us addicts^H^H^H^H^H dedicated users is going to pay it. Even the ones here complaining will pay it. We all already know about the THERE world and we already love it, so it’s worth it to us. But I don’t see how the world (and the company) can ever grow when it costs money to start playing. There has to be a way to bring new players in without asking them to pay at the door first. Speaking from my own experience trying to introduce new players to the world, I had a hard enough time getting friends who had never heard of THERE to download an unfamiliar program and register an account at an unfamiliar site. If I’d also had to ask them to shell out $10, I’d probably have never managed to bring in a single person. But I guess that’s a problem for later. For now I guess the goal is to just get all us dedicated members paying, and get the servers running, and think about the future later. The idea seems to be to break even first, and then worry about all the rest. I guess that makes sense. As I said, I’m one of the ones who just wants to get back into the world, and is ready to pay. But I would also like it if the world was actually full of people. And if everyone has to pay $10 up front sight unseen, I don’t think it will be.

In the end, I guess an online, empty world is better than a world that is not online at all. But an online, full world would be best.

        Rio,
        I completely agree.
Lets just get the world up and running.
In the near future, I can’t see Michael not opening up an entire island to the Noobs and letting them play, restricted to that island, for a week or month to get them addicted.
Right now it’s time for all of us addicts to just get home and work the bugs out!

Part A wants a 15% increase of the budget from last year.
Party B wants a 10% increase from last year.

So Party A accuse Party B of cutting the budget. Both have increased the budget one 15% the other 10% so WHO HAS CUT THE BUDGET.

  191. #496 by nalora on 2011.08.16 - 6:06 pm

I was a beta tester and my issues with whether or not I would have to pay the monthly fee had to do with several factors. First was a matter of Honor. Would the company that gave me a “lifetime membership” honor that contract? If the contract was void, then when exactly did it become void? What about the assurances in other places that Mr. Wilson had said something about honoring the lifetime beta contract, but now it seems he is waffling on that idea? The contract was with There Inc. and not Michael Wilson. When did There Inc. cease to exist, exactly, and if it did, then why is the name There Inc. still being used? Secondly, was my budget. Excuse me if I am one of those rare people who actually budget their money. I was willing as a Beta Lifetime to return to There and work hard to make it a success with my time and energy and also I planned on renting my little clubhouse again, essentially to pay around 20 dollars into There every month. I also emailed and called 40 other people to tell them to please come back and help to support There.

However, the snarky unprofessional comments from the “owner” of the business are making me have second thoughts. Is this really a venture I want to support? I am not so sure anymore. Excuse me for asking for clarification.

    • #497 by Reo on 2011.08.16 - 8:35 pm

Uh, lifetime beta memberships are being honored. What exactly are you complaining about?

      • #498 by Reo on 2011.08.16 - 8:57 pm

I didn’t mean for that to sound as bad as it did.

I mean, what exactly is the problem? When was MW “waffling” over the idea over whether to honor the lifetime beta membership? I seem to recall that he said from the very first blog post announcing There 2 that those accounts would still be free, and he hasn’t said otherwise since. In this post, he confirms it again. So what exactly are you upset about?

Personally, I signed up in 2003 but (as far as I remember) I didn’t pay for the lifetime membership. So, I don’t get it. Sucks for me, but oh well.

      • #499 by Michael Wilson on 2011.08.16 - 9:10 pm

The problem is that “we” (unlike U.S. Presidents, CEO have to take the blame for all the past CEO’s… unforeseen decisions) (actually, wait, no, Presidents have to do that too). Anyway, we had TONS of Member Programs called “Lifetime”, which actually meant everything from “Lifetime Premium” to “Lifetime Ban”. So, everyone and their dog was writing to us say “Well, I should be Free because I got Lifetime”….

The problem in my mind is how people could, given what they know about this Companies financial history, and what it will take for the future, could justify to themselves that a one-time $9.95 fee was going to cover our costs to support them … forever. Even more so when you consider that many of them were minors who, well, didn’t buy any Therebucks.

Anyway, it’s all in our hands now. We’re running a squeaky tight ship, we’ve got lots of help from the Community in the right places, and hopefully another 2700 Lifetime Beta members won’t show up :-).

      • #500 by mmeodiles on 2011.08.17 - 5:23 am

I too, payed for a ‘life-time’ membership back in 2005…..but, you know what? We are ALL lifetime members!!….WE ARE being resurrected…I would call that Thereian LIFE!!!!
Besides…while watching a show called ‘Through The Worm Hole’ hosted by Freeman, there is a theory that some scientist are pondering, when speaking about the existence of God… We humans are computer animated and the reality is that our creator is a huge gamer!!!…..After all, the world IS made of Pixels, there IS proof…which really means that…our money is also pixelated…So it’s ALL good!!!! Meaning..the 10 paper bucks we give contains a bunch of pixals….so whether we pay or not…It’s ALL the same…It’s just pixalated money so don’t worry about it. ;0

It was hilarious at first when people did not understand why they will now have to pay a monthly fee, but now it’s just sad how some of seem to lack common sense.. Maybe it is just the little understanding people have with technology.. To not go in to all the technical details of how severs actually work, I’ll give you the best comparison.. Rent.. Just how you pay to have your nice home and furniture, is the same thing the monthly charge is. Your avatar and all your items “live” on servers and those servers have a limited amount of space and your avatar(s) and items take up space in the servers. AND the servers take up physical space in this planet with LIMITED space. Not to mention how annoying it can be to maintain a server and There has multiple.. Asking to pay a one time fee is just ridiculous.

  193. #512 by TheThereMan123 on 2011.08.16 - 6:04 pm

Right on Xcal, I’m not a Beta member, I never paid for any lifetime membership like that, but you know what? I don’t care. I’ll pay anyway, and have a hell of a lot of fun doing it! Oh, BTW, Urradio needs to come back!!!! FB me sometime, I have a proposition if you haven’t already started setting everything up.

i think everyone should pay there.com closed its gone …. this is going to be a new start coz its going to be there 2 its a new begining for everyone even the ones who was in there form 2003

    • #519 by xMelodyChasex on 2011.08.17 - 3:51 am

What new beginning? It was a pause in the system. And for me it’s not a new beginning. It’s still there.com. Get over it.

    • #520 by Ubber_Geek on 2011.08.17 - 6:03 pm

I don’t mind paying either. I paid for an annual membership at one time and I wouldn’t mind paying for a monthly membership now. Not everything is free in life. Shame that some have to learn the hard way to realize that.

was wondering if there was a mac client yet?

    • #524 by hugsalot on 2011.08.16 - 8:13 pm

yes but not officially.. there as one in beta testing, then there closed down. So.. it may not even be compatible with the resurrected version of the service.

      • #525 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.17 - 2:19 am

From what I read into Michael’s posts, the changes in There client required to run on the “cloud” are very, very minor (server addresses, and almost nothing else). That strongly implies that the Mac client could return to beta fairly soon after the 3D world reopens — and if there’s a Mac client, it’s a comparatively minor job to port that to a Linux client (since Mac OSX is BSD Unix under the hood), which would finally release me to dump Gatesware and convert whole hog to Linux. πŸ™‚

  202. #526 by hugsalot on 2011.08.16 - 5:37 pm

Thank you for clearing this up.. i was really sick of the fear mongering going on today. But the question is, how do we know which “lifetime_…” we are?

  204. #529 by 12mandy on 2011.08.16 - 5:19 pm

i think if we cant meet the 3000 quota for now we should consider paying $15 or $20 month untill mw and staff get over 3000 as time goes by,at least that way they will be able to open,my 2 penny worth, mandy

plus the lifetime thing really thats history now as there.com closed so the lifetime went with it so now it should a new start for every one really

    • #534 by Unknown on 2011.08.16 - 5:36 pm

Very true, I think every ones years should all be 2011 now. I mean, There closed, and is re-opening. Should be a new start for everyone no one should have more “rights” then others.

    • #535 by Buddy Schreiber on 2011.08.16 - 7:05 pm

Incorrect Martin. There are some avies that do have Lifetime Beta accounts. So, if you read Michael’s post, 57 of the signups have been from Beta Lifetime members. Those memberships are rare.

      • #536 by martin71 on 2011.08.17 - 7:38 am

did there.com close or did not?? yes it did so every thing dies with it 10$ is not going to harm any one
plus it will help to keep there2.com running if i had had lifetime i would still pay for it to help out

so now its a new start or it ment to be..

        anyhoo thats me

    • #537 by Tinirty on 2011.08.16 - 8:05 pm

This may make sense in a way, that every one should start with a clean even slate. But then we could just start There again with a fresh clean slate…no buggies, no hoverboards, no add-ons, no housing, no emotes, no patches, no voice, etc, etc, etc… These are only a bare few of the many things the Beta Lifetimers helped to develop and make glitch-free so we could play to our hearts content. There are not as many Beta as one would think, compared with the number of people who were playing when the game closed, and who will probably come back. In the end, those memberships are worth it.

    • #538 by xMelodyChasex on 2011.08.17 - 3:44 am

I for one am proud and thrilled to be wearing my 2003 badge and would be pissed as hell if my start date was changed due to a “pause” in the system. I have a lot of time and money invested in the last 8 years and it’s insulting to hear comments that you feel my slate should be wiped clean. I didn’t even uninstall the client when There.com made the horrible announcement hoping it would resurface. Dont hate on the betas.

      • #539 by Joselyn on 2011.08.17 - 7:31 am

‘TU Melody Don’t hate on the betas. We are a big part of the reason you are enjoying this game πŸ™‚ I will proudly be sippy from my beta souvenier mug when the world opens! And I will gladly pay the monthly fee along with investing in Tbux and real estate etc etc I hope this does not turn into people “bashing” or “griefing” betas once the game opens

    • #540 by hugsalot on 2011.08.17 - 11:00 am

It’s not like we will be getting free T$ with our free membership too. We wont be given free buggies, and zones on a silver platter. Many of us will still need to buy T$ to do stuff in game regardless if we get to play “free” or not. A lot of us have alts and they aren’t lifetime-beta accounts, so I’ll likely be paying for those.Matter of fact I don’t believe members who will be paying $10/month will be getting a T$ allowance. In the long run it won’t be free for anyone in one way or another.

After all there’s still a question as to the developer program. Are our assets still in game? Will we have to upload and pay developer fees AGAIN? What are the newer costs and wholesale costs going to be now?

But all of these things have to be dealt with one at a time. First we gotta get our inventories back (still missing my body shapes on 2 accounts), Then get the 3D world ready for the masses, then let users reclaim their zones, homes, and clubs. Then we can worry about the other things.

      • #541 by Michael Wilson on 2011.08.17 - 11:14 am

Yes, the assets are still in the game.

The Developer site has to be re-resolved to your new Avoids, but they are there.

No, you won’t have to pay AGAIN for approvals.

  207. #542 by Jordan on 2011.08.16 - 5:13 pm

Michael, you can’t please everyone, someones always unhappy however I think what your doing is fair and i’m happy to pay my monthly fee, If my 10 dollars will go towards there.com staying open im more than willing to keep paying as long as im in there.com!

  208. #543 by Unknown on 2011.08.16 - 5:11 pm

Is this post saying that Beta members, just cause they are Beta gets them in free?

    • #544 by Michael Wilson on 2011.08.16 - 5:19 pm

Well XenoRising (cause that’s who you are), it says that people who subscribed to a certain program during the Beta in 2003 will be allowed in for free.

      • #545 by Unknown on 2011.08.16 - 5:57 pm

Why not just make everyone pay. Everyone was going to pay already, I know a lot of people will be happy, and a lot of people will be un-happy but don’t you think that everyone should be treated the same. After all it is a NEW world.

    • #546 by Golono on 2011.08.16 - 5:22 pm

Not exactly. Only some beta testers had the lifetime membership I believe. It’s fair if you think about it. They were the people who discovered many of the bugs and exploits There had. In other words, they paved the way for the wonderful world we had and will have again.

      • #547 by hugsalot on 2011.08.16 - 5:40 pm

Yes we did, but a lot of, lets say “issues,” still exist since beta.

      • #548 by GaryBob on 2011.08.16 - 6:46 pm

If I’m not mistaken, they had to pay a pretty penny at the time to get that lifetime membership too.

      • #549 by Buddy Schreiber on 2011.08.16 - 7:00 pm

        Well said, Golono.

    • #550 by hugsalot on 2011.08.16 - 5:39 pm

We paid for this “lifetime” membership. It wasn’t just given to every beta tester account that was created back eight years ago.

      • #551 by Sue_G on 2011.08.17 - 7:22 am

Also, remember that while the membership is “lifetime”, most of us that were non-developers purchased ThereBucks every month to support our inworld activities and purchases. I sucked at designing so most, not all, months I spent $30+ on ThereBucks to cover my house and funzone rentals & purchases. Then there was the time spent helping to resolve bugs (my son and I worked with some of the engineers many hours to figure out a BIG bug with voice). I lost track of all the volunteer hours on the MAB.

So even with that “lifetime” membership, we continued to support There and the community both monetarily and time wise.

      • #552 by Innie on 2011.08.17 - 4:41 pm

Exactly what Sue said. Even thought my account is a lifetime….I will be activating both account that were my kids, for myself. Not to mention the amount I will put into T$

  209. #553 by Jane on 2011.08.16 - 5:06 pm

  210. #554 by martin71 on 2011.08.16 - 5:05 pm

i think its fair for every one to pay 10$ amonth as the old there.com is history now we are making a new start so every one should pay who would like to come back on.

    • #555 by Michael Wilson on 2011.08.16 - 5:09 pm

      • #556 by erick758 on 2011.08.16 - 6:51 pm

      • #557 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.17 - 2:12 am

No, Erick758, your banned friends were banned for good reasons (I’m sure); a fresh start is not the same as an invitation to come back and start more trouble.

      • #558 by ARTIE on 2011.08.20 - 7:07 am

For the record I have 2 lifetime beta’s from the old days. But I will still be supporting THERE by also paying 2 monthly subscriptions on 2 other avatars. That seems fair to me

    • #559 by Rakja on 2011.08.17 - 7:02 am

If you changed the name, called it a new game….Here.com and said it was operating on the same ‘platform’ everyone would have to pay all over again and make new avatars and start at ground zero (which I bet they would). MW, Bruce, Samsyn and the lot would have alot less work to do. I think it’s very nice and nostalgic that MW humors us so much. It’s like the Mayberry of online games. (Well…minus the 18+ lack of censorship and such). =^.^=

    • #572 by Hott_Chickk_513 on 2011.08.16 - 7:01 pm

Paypal Is Actually Very Easy To Set Up! πŸ™‚ Just Letting You Know.

    • #573 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.17 - 2:10 am

Hott has it right — unless you’re one of those few who have no bank account and operate on prepaid debit cards for various reasons; some of those card accounts apparently don’t play nice with PayPal (the same ones that, for instance, won’t let you swipe your card at a fuel pump and just fill the tank, but force you to pay inside and select a dollar amount before starting the pump). Last time I was paying for There, however, there was also the option to pay via “credit card”, which ought to work well with prepaid cards.

    • #574 by MrScrooge on 2011.08.17 - 1:17 pm

      Hey Hott_Chickk_ and ImageMaker,

  220. #577 by Taelos Katran on 2011.08.16 - 4:40 pm

I expect to pay to play. That was the deal and the basis of the “There Operating Cost” model. I pay to keep another world afloat that was shut down multiple times. Certainly I will help pay to bring There.com back. It is all for the greater good of course.

If you have to ask, you are not one of those who try to float the boat for free lets all pay, Im a member that payed the 50 so who cares I am willing to pay the 10 a month. Let’s get the game on.

    • #585 by Buddy Schreiber on 2011.08.16 - 6:56 pm

      Rebecca,

The Beta Lifetime members know who they are. If you didn’t join There during the Beta phase in ’03, then you most likely wouldn’t have a Beta Lifetime account.

      Buddy–

      • #586 by JasonMK on 2011.08.17 - 5:16 am

As one who has has been with There since 2003, as a beta tester, and paid the lifetime fee I for one do not know if I’m in the 57 β€œv1_beta_lifetime”, the 214 β€œv1_beta_lifetime_prepay, or the other 2,367 “lifetime. πŸ™‚

    • #587 by Tinirty on 2011.08.16 - 7:42 pm

Hi Rebecca – If you dont know if you were ‘lifetime’, then you probably are not. These are members who joined way back in 2003 or in a few subsequent years after that, and have stayed with the game through thick and thin.

      • #588 by Rebecca McArthur on 2011.08.17 - 1:19 am

Well actually I did join during that time really early 2003 and I purchased the lifetime beta membership for $30 (or maybe it was $40 it was a million years ago), which was ridiculously little and I was shocked that so few people did it. Frankly, I’m pretty sure I am one of those 57 members, but MW post above said they used “lifetime” a lot so I was thinking well maybe I misunderstood this and it was forever ago, as I said. All this being said, it is critical to me to keep There open and regardless I am more than happy to pay a monthly fee. If I am indeed a beta member, then I will setup a recurring t-buck purchase each month instead. The idea of never seeing Marcy_D again just really felt like a death to me. Sad, I know.

      • #589 by Cyndi Yonkers on 2011.08.17 - 7:32 am

awww good for you girl πŸ™‚

      • #590 by Puddlefish on 2011.08.17 - 8:54 am

I joined in 2004 and I am not a Beta of any sort, so I don’t know if it is few subsequent years after 2003 or not… probably just 2003 and before.

      • #591 by phasedenergy on 2011.08.17 - 10:52 am

Is there a way we can prepay now????? I would…we can work out the details later.

  224. #592 by kendrick on 2011.08.16 - 4:35 pm

I dont care if its free or not free….. i think $10 a month is a good price…keep up the good work MW and other who working on geting there.com up and running.

    • #593 by Mentor1 on 2011.08.17 - 5:52 am

I agree..and we anxiously await the arrival of the “World”

    • #594 by IceAnge1 on 2011.08.18 - 5:44 am

I’m Guessing that all beta testers were in the world BEFORE it opened to the Public, So to MW maybe you should just post the first day that There opened to the public and then people can just see in their profile when they joined. Just a thought that would make it easy, that is if only the beta testers were ALL before it opened to public.

    • #595 by phasedenergy on 2011.08.18 - 11:08 am
