Just a question for anyone that knows,
I had a club that I gave away, if I remember right I was still the owner but not the leader. I want to know if I will be able to get the club back if the new leader don’t come back to There.com? I don’t remember who I gave it to but it is unclaimed as of right now. I tried to reclaim it and There says it is being hold for the leader to reclaim. I just don’t want it to get lost, it was my first club. Thanks to anyone that can give good info on this!!

I am currently working with 3ds Max and was wondering if anyone that has designed in There before can direct me as to how I can measure the structure that I am creating so that doorways and rooms will be large enough for avatars to fit in them?

Basicly what I need to know is how tall the avatars are and also, if I need to export in a certain format?

    I appreciate any help!

    • #12 by Grimm on 2011.08.28 - 12:11 am

I seem to remember that avies were 9 feet tall…

    • #13 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.28 - 5:37 am

Hopefully you’ll get more replies on this, but what I recall from discussion with an object creator is that avatars are about 1.5 m tall; you should be safe making doorways 1.8 to 2 m high. As for export format, I’d suggest waiting until the designer program is back in operation; there’s documentation available for 3D editor users on how to get objects from the editor into the world (via submission). With There’s current staffing, I doubt we’ll be seeing any new user-created objects until they can either afford to hire additional people to approve objects, or can implement a working peer review system (FWIW, I’ve seen how peer review operates on IMVU, and I’m not impressed).

    • #14 by Jinxed_Karma on 2011.08.28 - 12:28 pm

I’ve got 2.232m tall for male avatars. I used to create a box .5m x .5m x .2.3m as a guide. My guess is, you’ll be able to test it in world before you’ll be able to submit it, which is always a good idea. You’ll have to use an exporter from the There developer site (still currently closed) to make it loadable in Previewer and henceforth possible to submit to There.
My only concern would be, are you are using a version of 3ds Max that There had an exporter for? I don’t remember which versions had exporters, but I’m sure somebody here (or on Thumdar’s forums) knows for sure. Or, you could easily find all of this information in the There.com developer forum archives…. Oh, wait.

    • #15 by Seg_Vio on 2011.08.28 - 4:25 pm

I am currently using Autodesk 3ds Max 2012. I’m sure there will be a way to re-format either in, or outside the program if need be.
Seeing how I got 3 different answers…I think I’ll be safe at 2.5 meters until I am able to test in a designer PAZ.

I really wanted the practice and ideas to flow for me before the game was back online.Hopefully I will be able to figure out this program like I did with photoshop which I used professionaly for a local studio one year to touch up highschool photos (pimple, tanline, and eye/glasses flash removal). It was greek to me for a long time, until I figured some of the tools out. I’m one of those people who will go out and get something such as 3ds Max just because knowing I spent so much on it…It forces me to learn it lol!

The other part I’m slightly baffeled with at the moment is how to get inside the item I created to design the inside! I have watched so many youtube videos in the past week on 3ds Max, that I feel like I should know it back and forth! But this is one advanced program!

      Thanks again guys!

      • #16 by Seg_Vio on 2011.08.28 - 4:38 pm

Actually it just hit me about the rooms! Correct me if I’m wrong…You want to make the room before you create the outside of the building? Like you leave the roof off, and construct the inside…Then once you’re done with the inside, you pin the roof on?

      • #17 by DavyRocket on 2011.08.29 - 5:53 am

Curently There exporter only supports Max 5 ,8 ,9 and Gmax. As for creating a house I have tutorial for that on my website. You could actually create your stuff in Max 2012, and export it using Open Collada, but you still need 5, 8 or 9 to export for There. TheChaz was working on using Open Collada exporter to work for the Previewer, but its not done.

      • #18 by Seg_Vio on 2011.08.29 - 2:28 pm

Chalk me up one for my dorkiness there Davey! I kept closing the tool tips at the beginning because I’m just that hard-headed and wanted to go straight to modeling!

Yesterday I finally looked at what was on the tool tips…and to my dismay, It had turtorials! Mainly ones on how to create floor plans and extrude walls!
I’m not exactly planning on creating homes per se’, I want to create unique items that may or may not have rooms. That and create blobs of disorder until I finally get a (somewhat) uniform end result! πŸ˜›

We’re going to have to repurchase any customized parts that were baked/burned onto our customizable cars right?

    • #20 by Michael Wilson on 2011.08.27 - 7:18 pm

      Why would that be?

      • #21 by ant1977 on 2011.08.27 - 7:32 pm

I’m only thinking this because the cars were repurchased by there and migrated back to us as stock units. But then again they did only appear as stock in our inventory until we pulled it out, I wasn’t sure if the back-ups would remember stuff like that too.

Hmm. I would have expected at least some indication of what part of TOS you violated — then again, There never had a huge staffing level, even in the “good” days (and the last year or so before closing wasn’t “good” days, at least financially).

    • #34 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.27 - 10:13 am

Fortunately, I’m 150 miles from the North Carolina coast — we’ve got some wind and heavy cloud cover here, but hardly any rain (and we could really use an inch or more, as long as it doesn’t all come down in half an hour). Glad I’m not on the Outer Banks today, though — this is the main reason I don’t want to live out there (find a way to steer hurricanes, so as to keep them offshore, and I’d rather live there than just about anywhere else).

Will there be a Mac osx client of There/ThereIM? If so, will Mac users have the opportunity to transfer items between accounts?

    • #36 by JonmiChel on 2011.08.26 - 5:34 pm

I think that answer has been replied already.

      • #38 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.28 - 5:44 am

Yeah, so, to reiterate, there is a Mac OSX client that was already in beta testing before There closed, but it likely won’t return to beta or be finished up until the workload at Makena drops to merely human levels. Meantime, There runs perfectly in a virtualized copy of Windows on a Mac, and is reported to run (fairly well) under Wine on systems that support that emulator; it may run in other Windows emulators on Mac or Linux variants as well, but users are currently on their own if not running under Windows; Makena likely won’t offer any support for those installations even after the 3D world is open.

Are is not a plural pronoun. Oh, I’m sorry, I see you figured it out at the end. The end with out a period, I should note.
I’ll give you a pass on the “form” since that is a common slip of the finger.

Did anyone watch the Virtual World movie documentary Life 2.0?
Last night on Thurs Aug. 25th. Below you will find the info and other times it will air.

It was about SL. I watched a small part of it. One portion was about some guy who went around like a terrorist, guns and backpack bombs blowing himself up at events causing problems. He was unhappy cause Linden Labs only banned him for 24 hrs he wanted a week! Then there was a strange guy who went around as small young school girl! Also there was a woman who hired a real lawyer cause her items were being copied and sold!
I could not stop laughing how mixed up SL is. There voice chat is so lam and their mouths don’t move!

Mr. Wilson and staff of There. Thank you so much for all you do!

Virtual World movie documentary Life 2.0 on OWN channel (The Oprah Winfrey Network), Life 2.0. It features real world interviews, how people get addicted to the virtual world of Second Life. The movie trailer and website link here – http://www.life2movie.com/ It really does show how people get so wrapped up in the virtual world.

I can’t wait for it to reopen. But with all the mess that’s been going on I can’t remember when was the estimate of the reopning? Some people are saying any day now, some people are saying 2012, I hate to be one of the “WHENS IT GONNA OPEN HUH????” people, because I DO follow the posts, but if another commenter can just refresh my memory I’d really appreciate it.

    • #50 by Tre_Ghost on 2011.08.26 - 9:37 am

Though I missed the post, several have quoted MW saying the PROJECTED date is mid September. I do remember seeing MW say it would be a MINIMUM of two weeks after thereIM is open to us all. We’re past that 2 week minimum. In my OPINION I agree with mid to late September, it depends probably on how well the world works out for those they select to test it. Hey ppl, while you’re here please join my new group. Only got 3 members including me and I never had a group before, it’s for buggies ty in advance, I’ll join anyone’s group who joins mine πŸ™‚ http://webapps.prod.there.com/clubs/clubs?op=home&id=13972345

  28. #51 by studlyfromthere on 2011.08.26 - 4:40 am

    Mr. Wilson,

when you guys do the beta for the world, will the Mac Client be part of that beta test?

    • #52 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.28 - 5:47 am

I’m not Michael, nor connected with Makena, but I’d be very surprised if that were the case — it would greatly complicate things, as they’d constantly have to decide whether a problem was due to a bug in the Mac client, or a bug in the server side related to the migration to the cloud. The Windows client is a known quantity, with well documented bugs, and limiting the GP period to that client will greatly simplify ensuring the servers are ready for the crowds when the rest of us are able to rejoin the 3D world.

      • #53 by studlythere on 2011.08.28 - 9:44 am

The mac client was created before there closed and MW worked on it during the time There was closed. He did say that the Mac Client will be released.

      • #54 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.29 - 2:05 am

Oh, I agree — Michael is on record that there will be a Mac client. What I’m saying is that it would be sensible to separate final beta testing of the Mac client from getting the 3D world fully functioning in the cloud, if only to reduce the amount of wasted effort chasing bugs in the wrong code. If I were running things (which I’m not — I couldn’t handle the rectangular pieces of paper without causing a lot of chaos due to lack of backing for them) I’d plan to start a Mac client beta as soon as the 3D world is operating without daily crises and making a bit of a profit (though, depending on the number of expected Mac users, the profit part might be amended to “breaking even”).

    Michael,

Thought about doing a documentary about all you had to go through to bring There 2 online?

Might be an interesting piece to show on PBS?

Probably can do something like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jK9dZZbWhaI (Virtual Laguna…)

    • #58 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.26 - 2:07 am

Might be a little late for that; those commonly rely on footage shot in planning stages, during actual work, etc. — and honestly, I’d rather not have a film crew getting underfoot at Makena’s offices; let Samsyn, Bruce, and Michael get their work done instead of sticking lenses in their faces!

  31. #59 by hdo0oi on 2011.08.25 - 4:20 pm

OMG AWSOME .. MW r we going to have the hair patch again??

    • #60 by Michael Wilson on 2011.08.25 - 5:06 pm

Umm. No. The Hair patch (well, some of them) was stolen property. So, no we won’t support it any more than we did before.

      • #61 by Basya on 2011.08.25 - 5:24 pm

I do hope the GPSD will work! I use the Bedican compass included in the program. I still have the files backed up and hope to copy them back into the There folder after we enter once again!

      • #62 by CpnBob on 2011.08.25 - 5:24 pm

Seems like a lot of the patches were through Thumdar. I’m thinkin that what he has for There.com will be ok to use. I had the JnR Compass with all the patches included. I dunno if that will be available. Hope so, I’ll need it to rebuild a hood, 30 hood lots, and many pazes because I removed the old Makena programs completely, including layouts. waaaaa.

      • #63 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.26 - 2:04 am

Basya, Bedican and other similar compass extensions most likely will work; it’s just XML that uses the avie location information provided by There servers to the client. It’s possible the change in server addresses may require patching these compass extensions — unfortunately, I’m not an XML expert, so I’m just not certain. I know GPSD won’t work unless BtSt either restarts its server or turns the project over to someone else — has anyone seen him?

Umm, you didn’t save your layouts?

      • #73 by Jordy26 on 2011.08.25 - 3:07 pm

Layouts were saved Locally to your computer, not by There. So unless you went into your There client files and made a copy of the layouts, they are now gone if the client has been uninstalled.

      • #74 by fulkenstien on 2011.08.25 - 4:06 pm

now this brings up a good question.will our saved layouts work in the “new” There?after hosting in pretty near every race enabled funzone i have hundreds of saved racetrack layouts.

      • #75 by CpnBob on 2011.08.25 - 4:37 pm

Hmmm … When we “Put Back” lots, they showed up with layouts complete, on lots and hoods. So that wont work if we closed all There programs when it closed? Yikes! lol

      • #76 by Jinxed_Karma on 2011.08.25 - 6:09 pm

I sure did save my layouts! I just did a search for *.lay and got 1498 results. Granted, many are duplicates, and many are pre-finalized builds, yet, many are not. 50 saves = not enough… Am I being greedy? lol, I’ll adapt, again.

      • #77 by ant1977 on 2011.08.25 - 7:36 pm

I saved most of my layouts before I cleared them, leaving ArrowWood at closing just one big 100 acre field. I agree with you Jinxed_Karma, 50 saved layouts wasn’t enough for me either. BTW I loved your tracks, only wish I had more time to spend at your FunZone!

  42. #91 by 12mandy on 2011.08.25 - 6:03 am

    thanks for update michael,
ive got little suggestion, would it not be wonderful if yachts and boats were able to sail from island to island or landmass to another landmass, then berth there boats and drop buggy and explore, after all seas and oceans was meant for sea craft, buggy and car lovers could fly or sail to another island or landmass then drop car or buggy and explore,in the last there.com all yachts and boats and ships were static unable sail as seas and oceans were under 2 feet deep,so we were able drive our buggys from europe to america,we could always be prepaired to watch out for many pirates out there, lol, then there underwater dwellers im sure many love scuba diving, lost underwater cities, mermaid villages and beautiful sea weed corals shells ship wrecks etc, then it would be real lifelike world where sea and oceans was meant for sea craft, and land for cars and buggies,if it was or COULD be implemented then it would need support from members on here, before there2.com opens, then the captain or commander as some call michael might consider if its POSSABLE,thanks, mandy

You mean like a “drivable” PAZ? Now there’s an idea!

    • #94 by Tre_Ghost on 2011.08.25 - 10:24 am

Yes let’s all vote on this concept. All in favor of them taking an extra month or two to implement this idea say yes as you enter a mental institute. Those in favor of things going as planned, carry on πŸ™‚

there was hoverboats shaped like real yachts and ships.
i would love to be able to race hoverboats in ways like the other vehicles with rating points and rankings.

      • #97 by Basya on 2011.08.25 - 5:19 pm

Yes, it would be great if hoverboats could be used in racing format! At the time There closed, when we did hoverboat races, we could not use the leaderboards, scoring systems, etc. that you could with buggies and bikes. This is one of the major things hoverboat people have requested for a long time!

BTW, for those who may not know, hoverboats were actually conceived as a mobile seater! That’s why in the skill ladder, hoverboat skills are not listed in same section as buggies, etc., but in the social skills! I think this should be changed now that hoverboats have become a popular VEHICLE!

A deep and graphic ocean would cause a lot of lag for There, which I believe MW is trying to avoid.

    • #99 by Tinirty on 2011.08.27 - 9:09 am

I think ‘drivable’ boats and yachts would be good to see – and might could be done like a skin or prop over a car – however I think that having a deep blue ocean would be a whole other game, as it would take just as much to create it as it does to create There.

Isn’t Palm Grove one of the two funzones that have a big platform in the center?

    • #101 by HoverboatPilot on 2011.08.25 - 6:41 am

I don’t think Palm Grove did but the one across from it might have. What was that one called, Windward Valley?

      • #102 by Escape on 2011.08.25 - 8:44 am

Mesa was the name of one of the race enabled zones (with the huge platform)! I am not quite sure, but I think Windward Valley was the name before Mesa.

      • #103 by Ltbigdog There on 2011.08.25 - 9:10 am

Was that one of two that were across from each other by like 75m and one was a long time hoverbike zone?

      • #104 by HoverboatPilot on 2011.08.25 - 2:31 pm

Yea, Palm Grove aka FazzleRock Raceway operated by Fazzerelli, was a long time bike track. The one across from it had a variety of vehicle type tracks.

    • #105 by Jinxed_Karma on 2011.08.25 - 9:01 am

The platform tracks are Sutter’s Plateau and Mesa. They’re both located nearby.

Ah! Thank you Jinxed_Karma! I should have looked that up on thelasso’s site. ‘doh
        http://www.hjsv.com/games/there/maps/maps.html

      • #107 by Jinxed_Karma on 2011.08.25 - 5:27 pm

That’s okay Francis_7… I’m always more than happy to bring up Sutter’s Plateau! πŸ™‚ That’s the first place I ever raced a buggy, early 2003. It’s where I met Neverenough (a couple years later), who became the love of my life (thanks again There & MW!) And, it’s the funzone I had an absolute blast operating during the last year before There closed.
Hannigan owned and operated Windward Valley (directly across from Fazz’s Palm Grove), which was just a hop and skip away from Sutter’s and Mesa. I’m keeping my fingers crossed things return to normal soon. It’s been a long 18 months… which is odd to say. Right now, the only racing I’m partaking in is a full-out sprint into a mid-life crisis. Here’s hoping There’s revival eases the journey.
Thelasso’s site is and always was awesome!

So far, you heard right, but as I recall, there was a self serve kind of hostess, that greeted new members near the top. πŸ™‚ The walkway had alot of useful info, which to me seemed easy enough to understand. And some of us have gathered up and will volunteer to meet n greet at the spawn areas after the walkway. Most are willing to help new members πŸ™‚

  59. #131 by coolangatta on 2011.08.24 - 1:28 pm

I hope we’ll see the Layout Editor return as well, it sure made building so much better.

    • #132 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.25 - 3:48 pm

I just dug into a layout file, trying to support my hunch that old layout files won’t work without significant, um, “maintenance” — and it seems like editing a layout wouldn’t be that big a deal; it’s just XML, similar to the track files generated by GPSD. Besides, we have all those “new” building tools from the last couple years before the closing, like being able to “nudge” objects in three dimensions and a couple rotations, and the ability to directly drop PAZ in the sky (as long as they’re at least 500 meters above local ground level). The only really hard bit, in my experience, is trying to get certain objects to drop in a usable form in a small PAZ. Must try to recall the exact details of the “replace” trick for getting overhangs…

      • #133 by Basya on 2011.08.26 - 1:50 pm

Hmm…I’ve been trying to remember how to “nudge”….

      • #134 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.27 - 10:08 am

As I recall, up and down used the “+” and “-” keys; I don’t offhand remember the forward/backward and left/right or rotational nudges — but I bet they’ll come back once I’m in decorate mode (if they aren’t displayed on screen, which is what I sort of recall).

    • #138 by Mark B. (Cowbellwalken) on 2011.08.24 - 1:56 pm

Perhaps we’ll be taking the “Wood-duck” approach to world exploration.

You have to “Learn how to fall before you learn how to fly” type of mentality.

    • #139 by Jordy26 on 2011.08.24 - 2:14 pm

      • #144 by Stephen Mol on 2011.08.24 - 6:59 pm

So basically any random member will be allowed to go on the walkway at anytime?

      • #145 by Michael Wilson on 2011.08.24 - 7:23 pm

        Not sure yet.

Every “Random Member” will actually be a paying, premium member now. Which means if they’re banned, they’re going to have to find a new way to pay. That’s not going to be so easy.

      • #146 by GaryBob on 2011.08.25 - 10:18 am

One of the criteria I’ve used since There ended, when exploring new social worlds, has been the length of time it takes to meet a friend/someone new who I like. Most failed *abysmally* at this and lost me after a few days.

I, for one, would love to be able to visit the walkway so I could welcome my friends when they arrive. That way I could help them myself and sort of personalize the experience. I know that vSide’s tutorial level, “The Gateway,” is open to the public. That was always a big help when trying to “recruit” new people and I recall a good friend from There showing up to guide me through it when I first joined. That made a big difference in my perspective on the whole world.

      • #147 by alexandria3178 on 2011.08.25 - 12:19 pm

Having been an IG myself, I would probably spend most of my time on the WW anyway helping new members. I think there is a lot of good that came from having an organized group that had the dedication to help others, anyone… not just people who were personal friends before joining there.

      • #148 by Marta on 2011.08.25 - 2:11 pm

I’m like (GaryBob#150) I want to make every effort to meet my friends when they join the world. But I really Loved…. that (Jordy 26 #143) Used the words “heavenly gates” (below) Because it is soo fitting for There2!!!

should I leave it on there and intall the new software over it,
    or unintall it?

    • #181 by ForTehLulz on 2011.08.24 - 7:14 am

      Uninstall it.
      So many people don’t read…
It will be the new DX9 client that you will have to download.

    • #182 by JasonMK on 2011.08.24 - 7:23 am

Uninstall, with There moving to the cloud the old software will be looking in the wrong places. (just as it was with TherIM, which i too asked MW about.)

      • #183 by Ltbigdog There on 2011.08.24 - 8:39 am

Just remember to save any layout files you may of kept, with any luck (I hope) we will beable to use the same layouts and save people hours of rebuilding.

      • #184 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.25 - 3:42 pm

I doubt old layout files will work. If you open a .LAY file with, say, Wordpad, you’ll see it has object IDs and locations (3D coordinates within the PAZ, house, funzone, etc.). Problem is, all the objects in our inventory have new object IDs, obtained as part of the migration process (since our avatars are new avatars with the same names as legacy avatars, I think it had to be done this way).

Now, that said, I have no intention of deleting my old layout files — if nothing else, I can obtain the POIDs for my “new” stuff (by dropping it in a blank PAZ and saving the layout, then opening the resulting .LAY) and manually translate enough stuff for my 10-drop PAZ layouts. The only way I can think of to do this automatically would be to read the avatar’s inventory (after the 3D world is open) and match the item names with those in the .LAY files; I’m sure this is possible (after all, people wrote custom inventory managers), but haven’t the faintest idea how to do it, and would prefer There engineers spend their time getting the world running rather than writing “convenience” applications, at least for now.

      • #185 by Dan Samuel on 2011.08.26 - 7:41 pm

Do NOT lose your saved layouts (gamekit or houses). They should work fine in the new world (they include both the ‘poid’ which WILL be new, but also the ‘pid’ which will be the same, so when loading a layout it will use whatever it finds in your inventory with a matching ‘pid’)

But you are the ONLY ONE with a copy of your layouts. They are NOT stored on the server. So don’t lose them πŸ™‚

And yes, your old client will (eventually) crash if you tried it on the new cluster. But mainly because there was a release of Flash after we closed (Flash 10.1 I think), which led to our leaking huge amounts of memory (and then crashing). The new client is not crashed by current Flash versions.

Oh, but the exciting thing about THAT is it turns out the ‘Flash Bug’ was ultimately the cause of the old mysterious “Client Wig-Out” where your desktop would start flashing and get all wonky if you left There running in the background.

But yes, you will need the new 3D client, and that comes with DX9 support which you are free to use or not, as you deem best.

      • #186 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.27 - 10:05 am

Well, this is one of those times when I’m happy to be wrong. I’ll be sure to back up my most current layout files (in fact, I’ll do it right now, before I forget), so I don’t have to remember to do it before installing the new client when that becomes available.

Skippy is probably in Carbonate, I guess it remains to be seen if MW will let Skippy back in, he’s not been recovered. Perhaps MW shredded the avie to save time from having to ban him later. πŸ™‚

Rarely on the internet do images without words suffice to tell you everything you need. More rare still are occasions where mere images can deliver feelings of pure joy, anticipation and begin to fill a longing void…

  128. #238 by xSnoopy on 2011.08.23 - 6:01 pm

Is it my imagination or are the graphics a lot sharper than the old There?
    GP, xSnoopy

    • #239 by Mark B. (Cowbellwalken) on 2011.08.24 - 3:54 am

I think it’s just the fact that we haven’t seen There in such a long time (especially since we have been relying on screenshots and older video) that I think we just didn’t have the best quality documentation of it.

      • #240 by xSnoopy on 2011.08.24 - 3:44 pm

        Mark,
I have about 40 screen shots from Zephyr on closing night. The graphics in the ones Michael posted above, are much better.

    • #241 by Mark B. (Cowbellwalken) on 2011.08.24 - 8:00 am

I didn’t realize what you were saying until now; but that is being run with DX9… that might be why you’re seeing such a difference.

On a serious note, the structure looks new to me since I don’t recall any buildings in There with a maple leaf on the columns like that. Kinda reminds me of some elven ruins I’ve seen in other games. Neat stuff!

We have a bet going when it will be reopening.. lol So many good memories we had in THERE and look foward to making and sharing more with others. Thanks for such a good update, hopefully any seen and unforseen issues get handled with ease and we can all rejoin once again. As Dorthy said in Wizard of Oz, THERE’s no place like home… To many I am sure will agree, there has not been any other site, not matter how advanced the graphics that has had the realism like THERE or its drawing. I can say I have tried them all, built and designed in them all, and abandoned them all but one, and that was THERE. If anyone wants to add me feel free. “Sniperbait” Bring your paint guns and let the fun begin. πŸ™‚ Oh, If I win the bet, then I get to host a massive paintball event once our hoods are returned, if she wins then its a card event.
