GP3D

As you’ve all guessed, the “Guinea Pigs – 3D editions” have made it into world, and are finding alll kinds of things:

  • A memory leak associated with Picture Surfaces, which we picked up with the DX9 work. We actually did a lot of other cool stuff when DX9 was introduced, which in turn introduced some bugs. So, we found it.
  • A memory leak in our script handing, which had been around for a longggg time.

We continue to look for other things such as some (as in, one or two) GP3Ds reporting rubberbanding, but overall the consensus seems to be that things are performing well. Especially inventory loading.

But it’s still early. Over this week (when we’re short handed) we’ll be fixing those bugs, and inviting more and more GP3Ds in.

A couple of other notes:

  • Please don’t call the office for Technical Support. There’s no one there that can help you. Seriously.
  • Please don’t come by the office for Technical Support. There’s no one there that can help you, and I’m not there.
  • If you’re under 18, and thinking you’re gonna skate, you’re not. And when we catch you (which we will), we’ll take all your stuff, and you won’t get it back. Seriously.

That’s all for now.

Here’s something to look at today.

I wanted this to be a lot better. I was so excited to get the GP e-mail. I stared at it for about 10 minutes before I realized that I probably should do something with it.. like install there.com and give it a try. I marked the date on my calendar with a big smily face. I have been grinding it as best I can looking for problems and finding a few here and there. I see from posts here and there that a lot of people want to see more of the testing, so I asked first then started to work on a short film today. Over the past year I have been trying to get over my dependence on using my old Alienware laptop (a PIII which I used to record all of my videos starting with There Action News in August of 2003) I now need to think bigger and better. I realized that my new machine could shoot 1080p with not much strain at all. If you got a large screen check it out in 1080p! So I set about shooting a tiny video today. I did not realize that editing would be such a pain on a PC. I have always used a Mac for editing before. Anyhow I made a poor selection for an editing program. I got it done, but there are really no audio controls and I could not even add in a narration track or soundtrack. The older version of this program had many more audio editing tools. Oh well. So it has no credits, and is mostly unfinished. The other G.P. who was going to do the part of the host was unable to make it, so I ended up doing both parts. I sort of thought I could change the pitch a bit and make it ok.. can’t do that either! ‘vash Anyhow I must go pass out now. More video footage and pictures to come!

Yay! I’m really happy we’re one step closer to going home. And Congrats to all the GPs. I keep checking my email every hour hoping for an invitation to be a GP. My husband and kids are laughing at how desperate I am.

I recall a couple users mentioning they were running on a Mac with Windows in a virtualizer; if that works, Boot Camp ought to work at least as well (it’s a dual boot manager, right, letting you choose Windows or Mac OS when you start up the machine?).

      • #16 by Osee on 2011.09.01 - 2:22 pm

Yes, thought it would work but didn’t want to find after there opened.

Osee, I own a MacBook and when There was open, I ran There on BootCamp. It worked great, no problems at all. Running Windows virtually for There is an option but not a very good one. I would highly recommend using BootCamp for a good ‘There expereince.’

Oke guy’s here we go I am a Gp on There 3d.
Soon some other info comes also like photo’s and video.
Do not ask me who are the Gp’s , I know them but do not tell.
Its not my job to tell you about that.
Only the Gp him/her can tell that.
So respect the Gp’s and let them test There.com.
To give the Gp’s fun in testing so more bugs are found befor reoping there.
I am a basic member of there nothing special.
Just a helping hand for the people and there.com.
    And more info later oke.
Thank you and give the other Gp’s a happy feeling the needed.

At least you guys are taking the opportunity to upgrade to DX9. One of the best things about there was that it would run on almost any PC after 2002. Makes me wonder if there is still any similarities to what Forterra uses.

  20. #31 by stxdixiechick on 2011.08.31 - 2:46 pm

Silly question, but its one I am getting a lot from friends, and also it is a question in the back of my mind as well. There.com used to boast (almost yell) that the client is able to be used on slower internet connections. Is the new there.com going to be the same? I realize that most people now days do not use dial up, but there are many still on satellite internet, or 3-G connections. Kudos to the whole team on getting things up and running! The screenies I have seen look GREAT! 🙂

    • #32 by Michael Wilson on 2011.08.31 - 3:28 pm

It will work as well, or not, as it did before. We didn’t change anything in that area.

      • #33 by stxdixiechick on 2011.08.31 - 5:05 pm

Great news for slow connections 🙂

      • #34 by Tre_Ghost on 2011.09.01 - 10:26 am

I will say this as a person with dial-up. The welcome walkway was weird, all white but I was capable of reading the signs and navigating though to the end to reach the world. The world itself took a week or two of leaving it on while I slept to load the avatars and colors of the world. Then buggies and houses were last to load, still unsure if I ever fully loaded lol. But once the color was all there I was fully able to enjoy the world with virtually lil lag, even less than a browser based 3d world. The only sucky part was two weeks after I loaded a forced update came, which made me reload it. Overall it’s the best 3d world for dial-up hands down.

      • #35 by Michael Wilson on 2011.09.01 - 10:48 am

I’m surprised an update forced you you to reload things. Did it make you uninstall?

      • #36 by Camel on 2011.09.01 - 12:55 pm

Isn’t the walkway a single scene that’s included with the initial install (along with newbie/IG clothes and any other assets used in newbie areas)? I was under the impression that they’d gone to a lot of effort to fix the walkway experience.

      • #37 by Tre_Ghost on 2011.09.01 - 3:26 pm

No it didn’t make me reinstall, but it was a long update 2 dl I remember. The only difference was that stuff loaded a lot faster than the original time. Like 2-3 days rather than 1-2 weeks. To camel, the reason the walkway was white is well cause on dialup everything kinda starts that way and I pushed through it to get to the world not giving it time 2 load for me. Dun get me wrong, it’s worth the time it takes 2 load for me. Yep while you all are driving around when it opens and see me standing idle, don’t paintball my poor loading avie lol

      • #38 by Camel on 2011.09.05 - 10:52 am

You’re missing the point – There ships with all of the files you need to load the walkway (the scene as well as all newbie and ig clothes), so there is nothing to download.

Whenever the time comes I’d like to be Mac tester, though I’m sure if there is development on that will be long after the 3D world has opened up and more kinks have been ironed out once you have a significant population and load on the system. Probably some time next year I’m assuming.

    • #54 by Michael Wilson on 2011.08.31 - 10:57 am

Those were taken with a manual focus Leica.

But, as my father, who was a photojournalist with the U.S. Marines for 20+ years said “It’s not the camera that takes the picture”. And he used to use a Mamiya Twin lens Reflex, which weighed about as much as my little brother did.

      • #55 by SaltySilver on 2011.08.31 - 11:13 am

I was doing to comment on your eye for takeing a great picture. The angles on how to draw your eye to points of intersets are very well done. I see you pick up quite abit from your Pops.

      • #56 by LeeLee on 2011.08.31 - 1:34 pm

Interesting about your father! That Mamiya Twin lens Reflex is truly handsome model and… I want it! lol Thank you for the reply, Michael!

      • #57 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.31 - 2:48 pm

If that was a C series Mamiya, you aren’t exaggerating much — put the long lenses on a C330 and it’s close to twenty pounds. Helps keep the shot steady (I don’t have a Mamiya, sad to say, but my Speed Graphic has much the same effect; I can hand hold that monster to 1/20 second with a 150 mm lens).

Just one question. I have a 13 year old daughter who played there.com. Becouse my Daughter was at the time still under 13 yrs i had to send an email requesting that my daughter would be allowed to play and she was only in world when i also was in world so as to be able to supervise her. my question is will there be something similar in this new there.com, taking into consideration that i would be taking the full responsability for her ???

    • #60 by Michael Wilson on 2011.08.31 - 10:54 am

We’re very sorry, but no, that won’t be possible. We had some incredibly creative (but also, obvious) attempts by minors to forge “parental permission” with There, and since we can’t provide any sort of protection for minors, we’ve decided we’re just not going to admit folks under 18. We know this is very disappointing, but we’ll hold onto their accounts for when they do turn 18 (if they still want to use them) (and maybe we’ll have cats by then).

      • #61 by Lady_Tigrane on 2011.08.31 - 12:18 pm

Wow, what’d you do, leave all your vehicles in the sun? 😉 I just checked the feelium tanks (still full — even in the buggy I bought used six years ago; feelium fusion must be incredibly efficient), made sure the hoverboat lift bladders are still inflated, and can’t find anything else to tune up (hoverboards don’t seem to have any moving parts, even).

      • #66 by Mooly on 2011.09.04 - 7:13 am

I’m sure a good waxing would do the hoverboards a world of good.

    MW,

Is there any sort funzone reduction in the planning? I ask simply bc when I use the search interface my old Funzone is not listed amongst the results.

    • #68 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.31 - 2:43 pm

First, it might show under the original There-assigned name (the one it had before anyone had ever rented it); second, it might not show if it’s not part of the limited subset of the 3D world currently open for the GPs to test (search can’t find it because the server where it would reside isn’t yet active in the cloud).

Given that there haven’t been many new funzones added since I joined in 2004 (two in Saja, two on Frosty, and a couple on an outlying island near Comet — in six years), I’d be surprised if there were a reduction below those that existed in 2004 — especially since funzone rent is income for Makena! Now, whether funzones show immediately when our avatars first return to the 3D world, I seem to recall Michael stating that the world would be brought back online gradually — which might mean funzones, houses, PAZ, and neighborhoods would be phased in rather than being available immediately.

Thanks so much for the update 😉 Question…… when the world opens and we see old friends and people on iggy, will the note I placed in their nametag as to why they were iggied still be there? I know it’s a long shot, just curious.

    • #71 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.31 - 2:39 pm

I’m not certain, but it seems to me I recall four or five updates back (maybe further than that) Michael mentioning that they were attempting to recover avatar notes along with skills and property.

Does anyone know what picture surfaces are?

    • #79 by Escape on 2011.08.31 - 12:00 pm

PictureSurface Billboard. “Get your creative on…this sign lets you showcase public-approved pictures from Flickr! Once you buy it, look in your My Gear menu and start sharing your favorite images.”

      • #80 by Escape on 2011.09.01 - 1:28 pm

The PictureSurface idea is awesome. After purchased and dropped (in areas we rent like paz’, lots etc), allows us to upload (or use stock) images for display on the in-world “surface”.

This was introduced about the same time as the various other signs (late 2009 early 2010?? not sure).

By the way MW, what kind of batteries were you using for your camera. No one has asked that yet, so figured I would get that one out of the way, and that should complete ALL the questions about your camera.

Well, worth remembering that the time frame for ThereIM slipped by almost a month. Personally, I’ll be very, very happy if the 3D world is fully open by Christmas, but it’s looking (optimistically) like they may beat that time frame by a good margin. And no, I have no connection with Makena (other than that I’ve spent a few hundred dollars with them between 2004 and 2010 and expect to spend more in the near future); I’m making guesses based on the information available to the public.

      • #87 by Mark B. (Cowbellwalken) on 2011.09.01 - 8:30 am

Well this is honestly the part of the There “Resurrection” that I appreciate taking longer anyway. Getting my inventory back on ThereIM was awesome and I appreciated it; but honestly getting the 3D world back is more important to me. If It takes until December then that’s just the way the cards have been dealt. The 3D world looks great according to the photos GP’s have shared so far; and with that in mind I fully appreciate folks finding bugs and making it work as smooth as possible in the meantime.

With other games I’ve played on consoles; rushed deadlines only lead to an unpolished product. While online games have far more bugs (that constantly have to be worked out) I’m happy with them fixing as many as they can find before releasing anything to the public.

    • #93 by Jonathan on 2011.08.31 - 5:19 am

He uses a Leica M9 – with a Noctilux-M 50mm lens! Crazily expensive, but hell, they take good quality images!

      • #94 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.31 - 2:34 pm

No kidding — that Noctilux lens is worth more than all the cameras and computers I own plus my van, and it’s significantly less than the M9 body. The two together cost about as much as a brand new Kia.

  77. #128 by Camel on 2011.08.30 - 9:21 pm

Are you planning to give the under 18 population some warning not to try anything? I would hardly consider your personal blog to be official notice.

    • #129 by ImageMaker on 2011.08.31 - 2:30 pm

There’s already what I believe to be a legally binding statement in the avatar recovery process requiring the participant to be 18 years or older; I expect the same thing will be found in the new TOS when they show up (which will presumably be before the 3D world opens). No one can enter There (as a legacy or as a new user) without agreeing to the TOS (whether they’ve read it or not, they state they have), which means anyone under 18 years of age will be committing a sort of fraud (“making a false statement”, “false representation”, or something of the sort) if they attempt to log in. Technically, such attempts *could* be treated as computer trespassing or computer tampering under Federal law (which would apply because There is a service available to residents of all 50 United States, as well as foreign countries), and could lead to criminal trial and jail time for the teen pretending to be an adult — though I doubt anyone is likely to pursue things that far unless there’s actual hacking going on.

Bottom line, though, is that everyone will have been warned before they can manage to log into the 3D world, whether they read the warning or not (just as you’ve been warned as to speed limits whenever you drive, whether you actually read the speed limit signs or not), and any legal action taken by Makena, ranging from freezing or suspending an account to complete deletion of the avatar and all of its “property”, shouldn’t come as a surprise.

      • #130 by Camel on 2011.08.31 - 8:45 pm

Actually, you have to be an adult to sign a legally binding contract – a child clicking through the TOS is not agreeing to anything in the eyes of the law. This is why every legitimate adult-only business on the planet requires age verification.

Also, the TOS are the conditions you must obey (terms) to access to the world (service) – there is nothing legal or contractual about it, so you really shouldn’t spread this kind of FUD about it. The reason they exist is so that if YOU break the agreement, Makena can terminate your service, and YOU will have no legal recourse. Contrary to popular belief, no contract is required – our relationship with Makena is not complex enough to require one.

      • #131 by ImageMaker on 2011.09.01 - 2:06 am

None the less, the under-18 population *will* be warned, and *will* be in violation if they bypass the age questions — and it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if there were a form of age verification required to open a new, non-legacy membership (though that’s a slightly tricky thing to manage if you’re not going to accept credit cards).

As for the TOS — if it has conditions (code of behavior and requirements), benefits (access to the 3D world), and penalties (loss of access, loss of virtual items gained from previous real money spent), for most common purposes it functions as a contract, and the new version will specify that you must be an adult to use the service. And a contract can be as simple as it needs to be — if you and I agree to exchange a few engraved portraits of Ben Franklin for the title to and possession of a large, complex machine, even if our contract consists of nothing more than “I’ll sell you this old Ford for $500”, signing over the title, handing you the keys, and a handshake, it’s legally binding — and there’s nothing at all complex about the relationship that transaction produces, yet the sale is a contract. The TOS of any online service is wildly more complex than any car sale between private individuals.

    • #133 by Melody_Chase on 2011.08.31 - 2:53 pm

One kid in a there FB group was posting how she hopes there will allow under 18 soon. When she was told it wasn’t gonna happen she said someone else in the group told her in about a year there would be open to all ages including under 18. Of course I don’t believe the nonsense but maybe MW has an opinion on the comment? Maybe a hell no or over my deleted avi body will do….

      • #134 by Michael Wilson on 2011.08.31 - 3:28 pm

It’s nonsense. I can only guess who’s spreading that rumor.

      • #135 by Melody_Chase on 2011.09.01 - 3:43 am

        Another persons reply…..

Alexia Muzick — there.com used to be 13+ but no longer will be when they do open the doors. no free accounts either. but if your like me, that won’t stop you. im 16 soon to be 17, and have recovered my Avie and everything. (I was a payed member when the doors closed btw not a free account) luckily when I came to there.com, I did not know the age and made my account 18+. I also play SL, have a home and everything, everyone who knows me could not tell I was as young as I am. My closest friends know I’m rejoining there.com. So if your willing to pay the monthly if your parents are ok with it and if your mature enough to blend in with adults, then I say go for it.

good day and great job u all
