Update

Here’s this week’s update:

  • SamSyn is building a new client with a passle of fixes for all kinds of little problems
  • Thanks to BABs and other GP3D’s, we’ve solved (we think) the lag problems – one was due to a router setting, and another the last (we hope) of the “internal-external IP address” issues. Yay GP3D’s!
  • Nametag colors will be correct again. NO, you can’t choose a new NameTag Color.
  • We’ve also put in some experimental fixes for inventory slowness. We thought this was what was causing the lag issues, so the fix isn’t really necessary, but it was a silly thing, so we fixed it anyway.

Here’s what’s going to happen this week:

  • SamSyn will make sure the new client doesn’t break anything.
  • We’ll send it to the existing GP3D’s
  • If all goes well, we’ll invite 10 more GP3D’s (NO, we don’t need volunteers 🙂 ).
  • The GP3D’s Mark IIs will be encouraged to do all kinds of kinetic activities – racing, etc, etc.
  • They’ll be allowed to drop PAZ’s, etc, but everything will be picked up again before we open
  • We’ll be adding more sectors to the world and loading more scenes. This will teach us how much of a load each cloud server can support.

Some other notes (less happy ones I’m afraid)

  • We know a number of you had items which were in your inventory which were..broken (as far as we were concerned), but still did cool stuff. Like act like 1-seater buggies. We have NO guarantee we’re going to be able to restore these broken items. We know they were very valuable to some folks, but they were broken, and we’re not sure if we can, or should, re-break them. Not saying we won’t, but there are no guarantees.
  • We won’t be guaranteeing old PAZ locations any more. Why?
    1. It doesn’t seem right for us to “Drop” x1000’s PAZs and have them burn up their clock time, especially when the old owners may not be here yet (or ever).
    2. To pre-drop all those PAZs means we’d have to have set up the sectors to support them, even if their owners aren’t here (yet). This is kind of a waste of computing resources, and $money$
    3. “PAZ” means “Portable Zone”. Not sure we can be held accountable for guranteeing a location of something which was by definition transitory.
  • I’m not sure if we promised we could do this, but if we did, we’re sorry. You will still get all the PAZ time you had remaining, it will just be in your inventory, and not out yet.
  • Deformed Avatar Faces won’t be coming back.

I think that’s all for tonight 🙂

I’ll ask the question that i certinly hope has a posetive answer:

Will paz / lot stacking work? There is many including myself who used that alot to reach our goals. I really hope its kept preserved

Because Otherwise a 46 peice house will be fairly empty 😦

*LAUGHS* The only paz dropped in Zephyr right now Samsyns, it’s a trip I have never actually seen that place without all the “stuff” in it 😉

i know this isnt a high priority right now but are there any plans to fix or change some of the funzones in the future?i would really love to see one or two of the hoverboard park funzones changed to race enabled zones.they were broke for so long and i was so disapointed that when they were fixed they were only social zones.i felt they would have been used more if they had been race enabled.

The path would be the url for wherever your picture is hosted. Such as photo bucket or something. Once your picture is up simply type the url into the “photo url” box on your profile page… and simply click save. You need to get your photo up on a site… and direct link to it.

I use photobucket myself, upload your picture to your photobucket account, bring your picture up in photobucket… and click the “direct” link. Then paste that into the photo url spot on your profile.

Did that answer your question? Hope so!

not can’t hardly move….I meant can hardly move.

  9. #11 by JS on 2011.09.09 - 2:24 am

Will you be working on your technology to have more Avatars in one place? For example when the Beastie Boys came by I think I remember horrible lag issues. For instance Intel has developed a technology for the OpenSimulator open source platform called DSG. Intel’s Distributed Scene Graph — the technology that allows OpenSim to handle thousands of avatars on a single region…..That is from an article on HyperGridBusiness. I don’t know how it works but are you developing similar technology? So we can have huge gatherings of avatars and not have debilitating lag issues where you can’t hardly move? That would be nice so you can do some bigger events and not be concerned about that anymore. That would be nice.

    Hey all
Do not book events if your are not aloud to get in There.com 3d
Some people have done this already.
All events a record by There.com.
So its not smart to book events and interfering the Gps3d to test or try out things but can’t book a event.
I know as owner you can make a list of hosting.
For now temporarily Samsyn is the owner of fun zones or one of his team.
So I ask you al do not disturbe his work by booking events if you are not on the 3d word in there.com
So we all get faster back home.
    Thank you.

On this blog I have a maroon square box, I want a picture there instead. I uploaded my picture on Gravatar Profile page, it shows my picture there but I don’t know how to make it show on MW blog page. Anyone got some help for me or am I just a lost cause?

My mind fails me!!! Can anyone refresh my memory? What path is used to put a picture on our there.com profile?

    • #17 by Tinirty on 2011.09.08 - 7:58 pm

Cyndi, I had my pic on Photobucket, and used the DIRECT path to post to my profile and my group page – worked perfectly.

    • #18 by ImageMaker on 2011.09.09 - 2:15 am

You need to put the photo on the web somewhere that’s publicly accessible, then copy/paste the URL into the appropriate field on your profile page. Most internet providers still provide a small amount of webspace that you can use to store stuff like this, though they do a very poor job of documenting how to go about uploading to that space (I use a free ftp program called WS_FTP LE, but you still have to know the ftp address and login format).

    • #19 by fulkenstien on 2011.09.09 - 3:24 am

easy way is to right click on the photo choose properties then copy the url then paste it in the field.

      • #20 by fulkenstien on 2011.09.09 - 3:25 am

make sure you update the profile page.

    • #21 by xxlouloubellxx on 2011.09.09 - 4:32 am

i think u use the flicker or photobucket then cut and paste the link

    • #22 by Christy Clendenen on 2011.09.09 - 5:10 am

I think you can use different pic storage places, I use photo bucket it’s just so simple. Once you have pics loaded into it there are 4 boxes below you’re picture , the one that says direct link you just click on, it auto copies it, paste it into you’re profile then hit apply changes~

    • #23 by McKensy on 2011.09.09 - 8:14 am

You can also use photos/images from your Facebook account…

  14. #24 by Xcal Urradio on 2011.09.08 - 4:40 pm

    Mr Wilson,
I was wondering… (Please forgive me on my lack of knowledge about the cloud) Will there still be limits on drops in the hoods? Also seeing our server is cloud based will we be able to hold more people at a given event before the lag monster shows up lol? One more question is it in THERE.COM’s future that later on down the road you might be entertaining a more entry level advertisement package for smaller businesses?

    Thanks for your time
    XCAL

    Guy’s ~~~Question PLEASE….

was there an email that came out today, from ‘There’? (someone left me an IM, but nothing more) I’m concerned my email “spam protection” may have killed it, if any part of the email address was changed. If it isn’t a personal type email and someone wants to forward it to me ~~~Thanks a Million~~~ quoits67254@mypacks.net

I didn’t see anything from There today. Can’t say what might or might not have been sent to you — but the e-mail address used would have been exactly what you gave when you reclaimed your avatar.

The references to “My Little Pony” are a homage to Ren Renolyds who, during a talk or panel at a conference, defined There.com’s former PG-13ness (as compared to second life) as “You’ll never find anyone selling My Little Pony Buttplugs in There”.

And we’ve never let him live it down.

Hey Michael, is the plant a
    Primeval Plant

Came across a patch of these primeval looking plants on a walk.

They are about 4ft tall. I had a quick glance to make sure no dinosaurs were around and I was still in SC.

The flower looks like a shower head or like one of those plants in a syfi film that shoots the seeds at you then exerts mind control. Please tell us what it is.

This was put in the less happy category: Deformed Avatar Faces won’t be coming back…………I don’t see why that is put in that section. I am happy to hear it. I guess that means when we dance we won’t make those looney looking faces anymore. I hope this is what that means. I think it was supposed to be funny when they implemented it. It might be to some and some women may giggle or something and love it to death. But in my opinion I found it to be a bad idea. I also am looking forward to the new skin concept for the faces and hope bodies of our avatars. I say go for realism. Let us take our shirts off on the beach. Full nudity should be find too because that is realism. If I want to take a shower in the privacy of my own home inworld I would like to do that. But I don’t think that will happen here though. So the best I think we can hope for is to allow us to take our shirts off. Well you probably won’t let the women do it but the guys should be able to. To be on Duda Beach with shirts on isn’t realistic. I remember once I had my avatar with a shirt on that was painted to look like I had my shirt off. The hairy chest version. Some guy made some comment like he was basically disturbed by it. lol. What a joke. He seemed upset to see my avatar like that. I say get lost baby boy. I like the sun light on my skin on the beach. You go wear a turtle neck please and go play in the sand with your little shuffle and pail.

    • #49 by Mark B. (Cowbellwalken) on 2011.09.08 - 11:24 am

People designed shirts that technically looked like skin and they looked fine to me. Why would you want to take away from the attitude of the game anyway? Making nudity a full feature sounds more like an opportunity for adults to act like children no matter what way you spin it.

There was never a place where I wanted to go to see nudity; it was place I’d go for the atmosphere that straddled the fence between somewhat fantasy and reality. There has an innocence to it even with more adult conversation; but what holds it together is the fact that we don’t have people running around naked and the environment is laidback but not to the point to where too much freedom because the opposite of the order it was established within.

Creativity in There is one thing; and learning to work around that creativity is fun… however being naked isn’t something that needs to be added… plus you won’t have to worry about children very long this time around anyway.

Thanks for taking the time to give us an update, MW. Having an inside on the process and what’s gonna happen next is certainly fascinating and heightens the anticipation. And having recently taken a sabbatical from WoW, I have been ‘cleansing the digital palate’ (so to speak) before re-engaging once again with the wonder of There (and the friends that come with it). It’s great knowing that we have a top notch GP3D team helping make There ‘shiny’ again.

But I’m still trying to figure out the significance of the ‘plucked flower’ pic’ (other than it’s stark beauty)

And I miss my There dog.

Dose this mean “as well” there will not have the blockhead thing going on as much?

    • #63 by ImageMaker on 2011.09.08 - 2:36 pm

Lower population usually means less blockheading. I’ve seen blockheads as close as 3-4 meters when an area was especially crowded (though I now suspect a failing and outdated router contributed to some of the loading problems I had), but been able to identify avatars as far away as they’d render at all when there wasn’t anyone else around.

  27. #64 by detectedx on 2011.09.07 - 9:03 pm

Mr.Wilson, I have a question. Is There going to be having maintenance as how it did in the past? Well, I’m living in Egypt, so could you tell me the time of the maintenance for my time zone?

    • #65 by hugsalot on 2011.09.08 - 10:29 am

what timezone is Egypt? there.com is HQ’ed in California (where i live too) so we are Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) which is -9 GMT. or -8 if we are on standard time (PST).

    • #66 by ImageMaker on 2011.09.08 - 2:34 pm

Maintenance used to be at 6:00 AM Pacific (GMT-8, observes Daylight Saving by US rules); if I’ve got the zones correct, that’d put it at 9:00 or 10:00 PM (depending on time of year, if you don’t have Daylight Saving) in Egypt. Unless cloud operation changes things, I don’t know any reason the need for daily maintenance, or the timing (set for, on average, lowest 3D world population, with most of North America asleep) would change. If nothing else, daily maintenance would mean avatars who’ve been forgotten and left logged in unattended would get logged out, allowing otherwise unoccupied sectors to be closed until needed (which saves Makena money).

Related to the above, I’d like to see an automatic logout for unattended avatars, to help Makena control costs — no reason to keep a server running, burning money, in order to accommodate an avatar left “AFK skilling” (on a board or bike with cruise control set, bumping against an interior wall in a house, say).

      • #67 by CpnBob on 2011.09.09 - 2:05 am

Actually, maintenance was 0330 – 0430 Pacific Time. Sometimes it ran longer than 1 hour, as we all remember. That would be 0630 – 0730 Eastern time, either Standard time or Daylight Savings Time.

  28. #68 by justagreatguy on 2011.09.07 - 7:02 pm

We may not post in the comment section much or if at all, but we are awaiting the opening as much as the next person. We are keeping our fingers crossed that things go well with the next set of testing and we all can enjoy the world once again here very soon.

  30. #75 by Stephen Mol on 2011.09.07 - 4:46 pm

I’m glad with the fact that they won’t have paz’s be out when the world reopens to all. If anyone remembers from a few months back, not every part of the world would be open right away. For example, the comet, new kansas and Aurora islands would most likely not be back when the world reopened to all. The world would be a lot smaller than it used to now because 1, there will be no more underaged avatars any longer and 2, not everyone will be able to afford a membership to there.com.

    • #76 by Babs There on 2011.09.07 - 7:48 pm

I can assure you that all islands that were available before There closed are still open (except CC Metro of course). Some “new” appearances as well! 🙂

  31. #77 by Truck Thereian on 2011.09.07 - 4:31 pm

so im trying to understand this, the Paz Put Back will no longer work with the new servers? due to different codeing? if so will the 500 meters or higher up you will still be able to drop a paz?

    • #78 by Babs There on 2011.09.07 - 7:45 pm

I’ve check all my pazes and none of them have a put back option on them. I did manage to venture into space though, and paz dropping works just fine up there, so the answer to that question is a yes! 😀

      • #79 by Truck Thereian on 2011.09.08 - 11:29 am

Tks Babs, fer your answer. i remeber befor there closed there was a put back with the pazes. i was hopping it was still there easer to place the 21st floor back in the air easy. oh well when i get in it will be hover pack time to 21,203 meter up lol… just hate to rebuild the hole thing ya know what i mean…

      • #80 by Babs There on 2011.09.08 - 12:40 pm

It’s not that the put back feature was removed.. It’s just that all the pazes in my inventory are like they were just purchased from shop. Therefore, they haven’t been taken out before and can’t be put back to a previous position. If somehow the pazes retained their in world placement information when we reclaimed our avatars, then I would guess that put back would still work initially. Hope that helps! 😀

Am I reading this correctly — not just that a PAZ won’t remember where it was before closing, but even after it’s been dropped and picked up, “put back” isn’t an option? Sucks to let the time run down after spending hours tweaking a layout to suit a particular ground slope — guess I’ll have to get in the habit of bookmarking the “drop spot” if/when I ever find a very favorite spot…

      • #82 by Babs There on 2011.09.08 - 4:13 pm

To quote ImageMaker “a PAZ won’t remember where it was before closing, but even after it’s been dropped and picked up, “put back” isn’t an option?”

No, the put back option still works is what I’m saying. It just has to be put out first. The pazes in our inventories didn’t retain their location memory after There closed last year, so you will have to redrop your pazes first before you can use the “put back” option. ‘tu 🙂

Mr. Wilson, this is far from a joke. It is vital you contact me privately! I beg of you! Hear me out and contact me by email!

Please take not! There are bad to evil players who want my paz spots to do nothing more than harm to the game by means of all out lag and use paz hacks to disrupt the game and area. An as well much grief to players.

I have asked you in the past, please contact me about this matter!

I spent 7 years and many $$$ dollars holding off griefing players.

If you would only speak with me privately, you would understand what all I am speaking of!

Our conversation, would remain strictly between you and I!

My Paz spot, is vital to the stability of this area and to your game and our world!

Please contact me privately, in 30 seconds you will know what I am talking about!

Amazing how much Paz_Worryed reminds me of a 419 scammer, writing from Nigeria in fractured English and trying to convince me he’s got a couple million illegal dollars that can be mine if only I’ll help him move a much larger amount into the United States…

    • #86 by xSnoopy on 2011.09.09 - 10:02 am

      ImageMaker,
Rright after I gave him my SS number and bank account number, my first question to that 419 scammer would be, “how is it possible that, a 50×50 or a 100×100 or even a 200×200 could possibly be “vital to the stability of this area and to your game and our world!”?
Wait, STOP!! Now that I think this whole 3-9-2010 closing thing over, I did close one of my Paz’s the week prior to closing.
NAH, that has to be a coincidence! Or NOT! 🙂
I will save you a spot, on the Bridge in Zephyr… come on down and enjoy the show!

  33. #87 by Gaultier on 2011.09.07 - 2:59 pm

Can you clarify what you mean by “deformed faces”? I’m all for fixing stuff, however restricting my choice to look a certain way using the standard spa sliders is quite another matter. There was certainly a way to exploit the hair/hat skutes in the spa, I’m not talking about that. Most everyone I know had either an “alien” or some other shockingly obnoxious “ugly face” lookset saved that didn’t use exploits. Are you prepared to go to war with the aliens and the uglies? Don’t make me call the federation!! LOL

If an owner of a neighborhood zone is coming back, can that owner have her/his neighborhood zone restored in it’s original location? I am speaking on behalf of avatar Soosi and her community specifically, but certainly there are other neighborhood zone avatars who have migrated.

  36. #90 by Linwood on 2011.09.07 - 2:37 pm

I would interested in finding out more about Hoverbikes and whether or not they are behaving as intended. In particular the “Superman” effect (holding up & down arrows while midair; for any gp attempting to test, the effect isn’t graphical and will only be noticed in rate of speed and distance). As well as races with them and overall functionality.

    • #91 by Babs There on 2011.09.07 - 7:52 pm

I haven’t tried that effect as I’m not much of a hover bike racer, but I’ll give it a shot. All the other vehicles in racing and lapping work great so far! Keep an eye out for new videos from the other gp3d testers, as I’m sure there will be more out soon. 😀

      • #92 by Babs There on 2011.09.08 - 7:06 am

Well, I either really suck at this trick or it doesn’t work anymore lol.. I’m guessing the 1st though 😛

  37. #93 by Mercuria on 2011.09.07 - 1:56 pm

I might have missed this in the long threads but will we still have our rentals when the world re-opens? I’d love to have my house back, I miss it!

    • #94 by ImageMaker on 2011.09.07 - 2:17 pm

If I’ve read correctly, everything that you can rent (PAZ time, houses, neighborhoods, and funzones/frontierzones) will be reset and the ability to rent items will be phased in (presumably over a short time, since rents are income for Makena). Given the relatively small population likely at reopening (a few thousand avatars) I doubt there’ll be a lot of problem getting your house back (I’m even considering renting the one I had a couple years before closing, if I can afford the extra $7 a month or so for Tbux to pay rent with), and none whatever getting one with an identical floor plan (say, across the road or two doors down). The only place I’d expect to see hot competition is for drop space in the “crowded” areas like Zephyr, Duda, and Hemp Beach, and of course for funzones.

I’m wondering if my PAZ will “remember” their last drop location — “put back” would really simplify things for a couple of my locations (one was a few hundred meters below the old 13th Floor, the other a mile or so above Tiki Bay), though in all honesty, neither requires that much precision (especially if our old teleport bookmarks aren’t restored).

  39. #96 by DavyRocket on 2011.09.07 - 1:43 pm

I am glad to hear pazes are indeed working, I am even happier to hear the “glitched patched” avatars are once in for all fixed. It will be so nice to once again roam/explore freely in a vehicle, and see the empty world quickly evolve again 🙂 With all the bad things going on in the world, There is truely a great escape from reality, but we should NOT forget what is going on either 🙂

  40. #97 by David Eich on 2011.09.07 - 1:19 pm

Please also change the name, do you know what happens when you type ‘there’ into google?

    • #98 by Tre_Ghost on 2011.09.07 - 3:15 pm

depending on how you type it, imvu comes up. But that problem will be easy to fix, just by setting the website tags and registering again with the search engines.

      • #99 by Michael Wilson on 2011.09.07 - 3:47 pm

Well, no. They pay for those spots. We’d have to pay more to get them back.

      • #100 by Tre_Ghost on 2011.09.07 - 5:00 pm

lol if I knew I’d get the only response out of all these comments I’d have tossed a few questions in there somewhere. I remember how I found There originally. I googled “3d avatar worlds that work for dial-up” and it was at the top of the sponsored ads. I do kinda feel like only there.com should be allowed to use “there.com” in their meta tags though, but maybe there’s some legal reason they can do it, not sure. I’m curious if I can get one small question answered MW, when you open the world fully as in start charging us all and allow us to download, will new users be capable of paying for new accounts at that same time or will they have to wait a bit longer than us? I have several people who wanna know will they get in when we do. ty

      • #101 by Philip Key on 2011.09.07 - 10:52 pm

Google doesn’t use meta tag keywords for ranking. They use a linking algorithm. How often the site is mentioned and linked out on the web. The top “commercial” spots that you are seeing with imvu are paid spots. No mater of meta tag edits will get them back, just $$$

      • #102 by James White on 2011.09.08 - 6:08 am

Actually, these are called SEO <- Search Engine Optimisation.

You register the 'words' on your page and when you type it it comes out first.

Ever wondered why Wikipedia comes first most of the time ? It has a lot of the 'word' you search for in its 'TEXT' on the page. The more you use the 'TEXT' of the word you want to be found, first it will come when you search for it.

Now, many people achieve this by background typing a lot of text with the words they want to be found, and hide them like 'there there there there.com virtual world virtual world there there there.com' <- example.

      • #103 by James White on 2011.09.08 - 6:09 am

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the “natural” or un-paid (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results. In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine’s users. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search, academic search, news search and industry-specific vertical search engines.

As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work, what people search for, the actual search terms typed into search engines and which search engines are preferred by their targeted audience. Optimizing a website may involve editing its content and HTML and associated coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines. Promoting a site to increase the number of backlinks, or inbound links, is another SEO tactic.

The acronym “SEOs” can refer to “search engine optimizers,” a term adopted by an industry of consultants who carry out optimization projects on behalf of clients, and by employees who perform SEO services in-house. Search engine optimizers may offer SEO as a stand-alone service or as a part of a broader marketing campaign. Because effective SEO may require changes to the HTML source code of a site and site content, SEO tactics may be incorporated into website development and design. The term “search engine friendly” may be used to describe website designs, menus, content management systems, images, videos, shopping carts, and other elements that have been optimized for the purpose of search engine exposure.

Another class of techniques, known as black hat SEO, search engine poisoning, or spamdexing, uses methods such as link farms, keyword stuffing and article spinning that degrade both the relevance of search results and the quality of user-experience with search engines. Search engines look for sites that employ these techniques in order to remove them from their indices, and may change their ranking algorithm to display more relevant results.

      • #105 by jimony on 2011.09.09 - 2:51 am

I was trying to find out what James White was trying to say so I did an engine search for a Geek to English online translater service and copied and pasted his comment into it.

Thankfully it worked and now I understand. The translation was:

        “Yadda yadda yadda.”

      • #106 by Eatings on 2011.09.09 - 9:28 am

Ontop of having to pay for those spots like Michael said… Why go through the extra hassle of going through google. It’s not like http://www.there.com is a hard URL Address.

    • #107 by Francis_7 on 2011.09.07 - 5:44 pm

Lets see… I type in the world there and I get:

There – The online virtual world that is your everyday hangout
      http://www.there.com/ – CachedSimilar
There is your everyday hangout where you can have fun with your friends and meet new ones — all in a lush 3D environment that’s yours to explore! Sign up …

Then there are some dictionaly sort of things about the world, and the wikipedia article followed by things of lesser use and just plain odd things.

I hope the new client works well or you might be making another one to fix more bugs. We all just want to play, but its important to make sure it’s all working well as expected. It will be worth the wait and BIG THANKS to all working on it so we can all have fun and not worry so much about those darn bugs.
I do not have a one seater buggy but I would be interested in buying one if some one wants to sale one (if we can pull it out when There opens) I know they are not cheap, I just like collecting certain buggies.

    • #111 by Cyndi Yonkers on 2011.09.07 - 3:02 pm

@justagreatguy, I believe if memory serves me correctly that the one seater buggies were a bug. They will be returned to world only to those who owned one (if it can be done) and are nontransferable, to my knowledge, please anyone correct me if I am wrong.

      • #112 by justagreatguy on 2011.09.07 - 7:19 pm

Well as a Buggy collector it would be great to have one even if it not so great, but if I can’t get one I wont loose sleep over it. I wish I was one of the first beta testers, I just missed out because I never knew of There until the Beta was over. I would of been there if I knew. Anyway thanks for the reply and when you see me in There, please say “HI”.

      • #113 by ImageMaker on 2011.09.08 - 2:19 pm

Cyndi, that matches my recollection (i.e. that the bugged one-seat buggies weren’t transferable). I’m getting the impression that they won’t be re-bugged, however — that is, that they’ll be matched onto a correct 2-seat “Purple Kong” model like all the other user-designed buggies have been.

      • #114 by AlwaysAngie on 2011.09.08 - 5:15 pm

That’s incorrect. I was given mine by a wonderful friend 😉

You guys are doing a great job. Moving a lot quicker than most of us were thinking. I’m sure some people will be upset about the PAZ thing, although I hope those people remember, to keep There.com open then need money. Making them have more expenses just makes it a more liable chance of There.com closing once again. You guys made a good choice on that.

  55. #134 by NateTheStar on 2011.09.07 - 8:00 am

Yeah, I remember paying a pretty penny for a one seater buggy back in the day. I really enjoyed the collector’s aspect of items that no longer can be sold but as a legacy, There would allow to remain in game. There was a fairly booming or at least novelty market for these types of items. I would hope that we get them back. I suppose there is a big difference between lucky glitch items and historical artifacts. Are we going to lose the one sided sign boards?

    • #140 by ImageMaker on 2011.09.07 - 2:03 pm

I’d guess it’s because that was a bug related to another bug, which has since been fixed, and restoring “deformed faces” would requiring writing the bug back into the face/body changing systems. Either that or MW and staff though there was a potential for griefing or other kinds of abuse (hard to picture, but then I’m not a griefer).

Hmmm a fresh start and the chance for people to move to places they might have wanted to live but never could get into. I will rent a house on Tyr and keep a paz on the island my friends choose to live on
.I know some of you all will be upset over the paz thing but let’s remember that we didn’t even have There anymore and if means you have to re-set-up your paz’s it seems a small price to pay to have our home and families back 🙂

    • #144 by Dean Caballero ( Bumpin42 ) on 2011.09.07 - 10:33 am

Ya but in places like Zephyr and Duda its hard to get spots there and people like me who spent ALOT of money and time to get them spots it really FRICKIN SUCKS for us to have There just take them away, If there going to do that why not just make zephyr and duda no paz zones.( Hmmm thats one way to loose money ) I know if i loose my spots in Zephyr iam going to move everything on to one avi and sell off all my stuff, and the hood. and only paintball! Maybe this is a good thing i wont spending all the money i use to in There, But on the other hand iam glad its reopening.

      • #147 by Shivaki on 2011.09.07 - 1:20 pm

Bumpin, the way that i look at it is that we all should be happy that There is even coming back. If There wasn’t returning, then you would have lost more than the amount you paid to get a spot for your PAZ. Nothing virtually lasts forever and I guess that includes people keeping their PAZ locations.

        See you in There. 🙂

      • #148 by Namron Therian on 2011.09.07 - 1:24 pm

I am also very glad that There is re-opening. I sympathize with your situation and I hear your frustration. I would like to offer some suggestions given the new info from MW:

-Explain your vision (be specific) on this blog and on the various forums (such as Thumbar’s site).

-When There re-opens, post signs at Zephyr and Duda explaining briefly what you would like, put links to what you’ve said here and on the forums and provide contact info for those who have questions.

-If a member really likes Zephyr and/or Duda and wants to be your neighbor, offer to meet with them and see what can be negotiated. If another member can help build (and share expenses), does it really matter who “owns” it?

I’m certainly not going to guarantee that everything will be ‘like it was’. It could be different than before. It could be even better. The only way to loose is not to play.

I hope that you’ll be able to

      • #149 by Faunarose on 2011.09.07 - 1:49 pm

      • #150 by Tre_Ghost on 2011.09.07 - 3:12 pm

I’ll repeat what MW has said several times here in these blogs, There was not an investment. Why should 1 person have most of one area to begin with?

      • #151 by Wendy Stoll (Wendy50s) on 2011.09.07 - 4:17 pm

Yes, why should one person get to take over a whole area, before anyone else gets a chance at it? I’m sure you’ll be in there right away grabbing up all that space again…but maybe someone else will have a chance, too? Is that really so bad? Many people spent a lot of money in There, but it’s not like buying land for life.

      • #153 by Tre_Ghost on 2011.09.07 - 9:01 pm

maybe I will show up with my ff off, with half of your spots taken lol

      • #154 by CpnBob on 2011.09.08 - 3:24 am

I was in There for 4 years, and also spent a lot of dough. However, I always avoided places like Zephyr and Duda, as did most of the members I know, because they were overrun with under 18 newbies and junk. I’m assuming that the draw those places had for crowds will be gone now that its an adult world. I, and a lot of others, couldn’t care less about Duda and Zephyr.

      • #155 by Melody_Chase on 2011.09.08 - 3:44 am

        Paz-free zone!!!! Paz-free zone!!! 😀

      • #156 by NathanAvis on 2011.09.08 - 4:43 am

Bumpin your attittude and maturity towards the issue is very disappointing. For the record I was a Duda Beach hotspot resident for 4 years. I financed and mostly rebuilt the Duda Bridge as well as various other places on the front there and I spent a lot of money as well. I always knew it was a “first come, first serve” basis when I dropped and had to bend the rules as did others.

You should also know the same as well as all the real estate policies as I’m sure you had to fight like some of us have in order to make your mark. Don’t go thinking money or service = entitlement. Your money is as good as anyone else’s and if you want your spots so badly just register on Day 0 and get there in time. It’s what ALL of us will have to do and if you ask me it’s fair game. Didn’t your parents ever teach you the spirit of competition?

      • #157 by MrScrooge on 2011.09.08 - 5:10 am

It’s going to be a good old fashioned Okie land grab.

      • #158 by Wendy Stoll (Wendy50s) on 2011.09.08 - 4:00 pm

Well, I USED to go to Zephyr, and to Duda, until they got trashed. I’d love to be able to do so again, but sounds like they’ll be immediately trashed again.

      • #159 by Dean Caballero ( Bumpin42 ) on 2011.09.09 - 5:49 am

What would you do in Zephyr? Who do you know there? ( Wendy ) Did you know zephyr is full of paintballers? And is home to PaintBall teams Like Snipers and Hellfish. Mw himself called zephyr The Wild Wild West……lol even he knows not to come down there without his forcefield on, But he turns it off just to see how long it takes for one of the Zephyr family to shoot him, And it dont take long at all, He slides well lol………. So wendy plzzzzz come to zephyr just once without your forcefield on PLZZZZZZZZZ i`ll keep a eye out for ya!!!! And ghost sry i can`t joint your PB group iam on a team with the greatest people. ( Snipers )

      • #160 by Eatings on 2011.09.09 - 9:25 am

Bumpin man, Snipers was a great team. Props to you for staying loyal. Zephyr was Paintball heaven, if you’re looking for a place to get shot, or shoot someone, that’s the place to go. But it was also about the great people that were there. I’ll personally help you shoot some people up the hills for ‘misplacing’ their paz’s. 😀 I got you bro, no worries. haha

      • #161 by Tre_Ghost on 2011.09.09 - 10:20 am

lol it’s OK man. I’m only inviting random ppl to work on my club leadership skills cause it’s the only one I can work on without the world. TBH I never once played paintball lol. I’d help you get your spots back also if I could but my dial-up will have me loading during the land grab. Get as many ppl as you trust to come in the 1st day and aim for your spots, ppl that will turn them back over to you. That way you have a better shot at it.

  62. #162 by Sniperbait on 2011.09.07 - 7:08 am

DEAR MW, I do have a curious question, and it isn’t just mine. In discussion with a handful of other hood owners like myself, we all had basic’y the same question on our hoods. When there was getting ready to close, the last month there seemed to be no charge for lot rent and so assuming no charge for hood either. When there reopens and we regain our hoods, will it be like purchasing a new hood and we have the 2 months in essence, or will it be a we got to shell a good bit of cash to just keep from losing them and then again a month later. Our concern seemed to all be the same in this and the amount of time of course it takes for lot rents to actually have an effect on what we have to put in and the number of folks we have not seen log back in that were tenants. Thanks MW for your time in answering and addressing this concern we have concerning our hoods in THERE.com.

Life is to short to not enjoy the day.. so get up, breathe and forget about those who have tried to bring you down. Aren’t you worth more than a frown?

  63. #163 by WhoopCDaisy on 2011.09.07 - 6:50 am

Thanks for the update, don’t know if I’ve ever seen a deformed avatar face and I can’t remember if I have a one-seater or not (so it must not be that important to me, lol).

Sounds like a grand opening is soon to come (hopefully)!

  64. #164 by Scotty Moorefield J.R on 2011.09.07 - 6:40 am

not to get off the subject but what kind is that flower in the picture?

  65. #165 by Susan Van Brundt Redlin on 2011.09.07 - 6:14 am

P.S. to above post, I forgot to mention that Orielle and Francis 7 are experienced players, I’m sure other current GPs are good players, too.

  66. #166 by Susan Van Brundt Redlin on 2011.09.07 - 6:02 am

Oh, I’m getting goose flesh, we’re SO CLOSE! I need to get home ASAP, I left a virtual sushi plate out and the place will have to be fumigated. Also left out a carafe of wine, probably vinegar now. Maybe I’ll ask Francis 7 to throw it out, he’s such a great guy I’m sure he’d be glad to help. Address is 005 Canyon Terrace, door’s unlocked.

When you’re doing the kinetic testing I hope you’ve got someone testing card tables. Maybe an upcoming set of GPs could be experienced players? If you go Floating_Spades you can find names of experienced players, club requirement is avid or better, but most members are renowned or legendary. But not me, I think a memory leak is in the There drain.

Also, I’m assuming that all earned skills will transfer. I know that a separate spades skill was set up, but the spades community will get very mad, and many won’t pay for There if we lose our hard earned Legendary badge.

GTG, I want to get a new stopper for that memory leak. If that doesn’t work you’ll have to hire a plumber at union wages to fix it.

    Peace,

    Jane_Austen

  72. #174 by N3rd_status on 2011.09.07 - 4:39 am

Honestly probably better off starting fresh with the paz’s I know it will up set alot of people that payed so much for the time and spots but this wa it will give people a chance to get the spots others refused to give up. A fresh start is always a good thing. Will be looking forward to building In my Funzone, setting up my Paz out front of it. And re exploring the surrounding area!

  73. #175 by xSnoopy on 2011.09.07 - 4:34 am

Once again, High Fives for Dan, Bruce and Michael!! Great work guys! A little closer every day!
Sounds and looks like you guys took a major step fixing the lag problem. Lets hope it works when there is a load on the server.

Don’t know about the rest of you but I am planning on standing, on the bridge in Zephyr and being entertained by all the cat fights happening when 16 people try to lay down a paz in the same spot 🙂
Whatcha gonna do when there is NO Helper to summon?
It should make for a couple of amusing days 🙂
And who said there was no humor to be found in Zephyr?

      • #177 by NathanAvis on 2011.09.08 - 4:38 am

Actually, this sounds like a good idea. Can you leave a chair and some nachos on the bridge for me, xSnoopy? 🙂

      • #178 by xSnoopy on 2011.09.08 - 8:48 am

        Nathan and Ant,
Believe me, if it would have been possible, someone would have planted a 50×50 over the bridge and turned the area into crap, WITH Ignores 🙂
I will have Nachos for both of you, but your gonna have to stand there like everyone else and laugh your asses off.
If it turns out that you don’t get an invite to be a GP, make sure your in game, the FIRST day its open to the public. Tele to Zephyr and join us on the bridge. Forcefields are optional but I can’t guarantee you won’t be shot.

    • #179 by ant1977 on 2011.09.07 - 9:08 pm

Be sure to set up a paz on that bridge Snoopy…. set out a couple couches and rent the seats ‘tu I’d almost pay to see how this turns out :o) j/k Have fun on your bridge 😛

      • #185 by Susan Van Brundt Redlin on 2011.09.07 - 6:05 pm

won’t let me comment to wendy’s post … she probably set it up that way because she’s so tired of being humiliated. You 2 must be masochists. I’ll challenge you to play against me and any unranked noob, we’ll have you whimpering in a single hand.

You could probably beat me at motu motu, that’s way too simple-minded a game for me.

Be afraid. No shame in backing out, I’m going to create a ringer avie, everyone is terrified of playing against me.

        Jane the Spade-inator

  77. #186 by Shivaki on 2011.09.07 - 3:42 am

The PAZ thing is understandable. I’m sure that people want to feel secure that they will get their old spot back, but theres other good locations for PAZs if they don’t.

I’m just anxious for There to reopen. All the rest I can worry about later. Thanks for the update. 🙂

Wow… I really hope they don’t do a massive landgrab in Zephyr… atleast inside the balloon area. It’s gonna be a mess.
(yea I’m one of those pb nuts that thinks inside the balloon spas should be kept clear)

    • #189 by Melody_Chase on 2011.09.08 - 2:45 pm

Your not a nut for thinking that. Some areas were just designed so perfect on there own they don’t need to be trashed with pazes. The balloon area was my favorite especially during the beta when no one was around. It was fun to fly around the balloons :D. This is what the big deal is. It was perfect the way it was. Interesting and unique and fun.

  80. #190 by KingSeth on 2011.09.07 - 3:19 am

Thanks for the update as always MW. I have one question though. What about funzones? Are they going to have the same rules applied as PAZs or will the owners still maintain rights to it for a certain amount of time?

Hmm. “Deformed faces” — I suspect that means my “big hair” will be gone. I’ll miss it, but I can live without it. Of course, that also means no alien heads, etc. — but it *was* a bug, after all. For the rest, it’s all good news (then again, I never spent hundreds of thousands of T$ on a one-seat bugged buggy). As long as my invisible hoverboat is still invisible — but it should be, it was designed that way.

Thank you for the update. Disappointed on Paz’s BUT understand as well. Out of respect for not just Peter7 but also Duda Beach, I for one wont be dropping a paz there. Duda will not be Duda without Peter being there.I’m really hoping he is able to rebuild what we all loved.Out of all the land on There to grab, thats just one place I’m hoping returns the way it was left. Sooooo glad on the nametags! Green just wasnt for me, haha! Looking forward to testing the New Client and new GP’s entering! 🙂

    • #202 by invu34 on 2011.09.09 - 9:10 am

When it come to pazes some of us payed ALOT of money to have our spots like in Zephyr. I know i had most of the right side of Zephyr and more, That adds up to ALOT OF MONEY that I WILL BE LOOSING!!!!!! AND do you know how long it took for me to get all them spots?? and the hard work and time i put into them, I gota tell ya This really sucks!!!! if we don`t our spots back like in Zephyr, Duda, I know you dont care about pazes Mw, But i do and iam sure theres others that do too. Besides is`t Places like Zephyr And Duda going to need a Sector set up anyways? You know there going to fill up FAST!!!

    • #229 by Jdin707 on 2011.09.07 - 10:35 am

I can understand your point Bumpin, But look at it from the There point of view, it would be absolutely impossible to make everyone happy in this situation. I think they are going at it in the best way possible, some players will not return, and some will, those spots that were being used that are a premium location may have users that are not returning, and unfortunately other premium spot that you worked hard to get, those users are returning. There is just no conceivable way to make everyone happy. The best way to approach this is simply first come first served, I understand this is going to stink like a rotten brown fish in the bathroom, but it is the best solution….Just remember that if it wasn’t for the EFFORT of MW and staff to get this world back to us…you would not have a chance at those locations again any how….So take the positive, that we are actually going to able to play THERE again, and good luck on getting your locations that you worked hard to get…..

      • #230 by Dean Caballero ( Bumpin42 ) on 2011.09.07 - 1:40 pm

IT`s easy to say when its not you and your money, And the people of Zephyr knows that 95 percent the Zephyr paz owners WILL BE BACK!!! or more. Jdin707 i dont ever remember seening you in Zephyr, I dont know how many thousands of dollars you spent but i know i could of had a NICE old truck with the money i spent , i just know i wont be spending alot of money in game if i loose my spots.

      • #231 by SaltySilver on 2011.09.07 - 3:05 pm

Bumpin, no worries… You know how the people of Zephyr work. I can imagine what would happen if someone put ones stuff where it don’t belong… say, me putting a paz in Fox’s spot. ( I would never) I would be run out of town or never hear the end of it. 😀
We already Lost There and all that we had put in the world, money, friendships, a home away from home.

We are lucky that MW took the poll and ask what we think of having There reopen. Then saying Yes! he would take on the project.

    • #232 by Melody_Chase on 2011.09.07 - 2:48 pm

Sorry but I’m hoping they get rid of the pazes in Zephyr altogether. The place looked like a garbage dump and it took forever to load. Areas with pre-existing There structures should be left alone just for hanging out in. I haven’t seen one paz that was so breathtaking it should be left alone. Certain open areas should be left for pazes. It’s ridiculous after a while. Too many of them of most of them never used. Paz-free zone please!!

      • #233 by SaltySilver on 2011.09.07 - 3:23 pm

Got to Love Zephyr for what it was or is. Its a culture unto its own.

      • #234 by xSnoopy on 2011.09.07 - 5:04 pm

        Melody,
        I completely agree.
No matter what MW does it is going to annoy a few people.
Bumpin had a lot of Paz’s in Zephyr and I understand a little of his frustration.
I think you have to look at the situation from EVERYONES viewpoint, rather than just one individuals.
I believe it would be better to leave the center area of Zephyr alone and let the Paz builders build beyond the Spas. That way, everyone gets to enjoy the landmark, not just a few who own the land.
If Billy doesn’t come back into game and get his property back, Zephyr will look pretty bad!
I’m NOT trying to annoy anyone Bump, it’s just my opinion.

      • #235 by Michael Wilson on 2011.09.07 - 5:40 pm

I don’t understand why you’re all worried about Zephyr.

As I’ve said, I’ve already dropped my personal “My Little Pony” hood over it, turned the sand pink and filled it with Double Rainbows.

      • #236 by Dean Caballero ( Bumpin42 ) on 2011.09.07 - 10:27 pm

Awwww Mw Turnning on his Lucky Charms, If it`s pink sand you want in your boxers, Then pink sand it is!!!………, Its Your Slide……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….lol.

        Oh Red,
        You are SO toast!!
If I blend right in, you’ll NEVER see it coming.
Don’t you love it when a plan comes together!
        Happy sliding 🙂 LOLOLOL

      • #239 by Lady_Tigrane on 2011.09.08 - 10:15 am

ahh but this is the Zephyr you’re gonna live in… altho add pink boxers and a cage to that:

        Mr. Wilson! your a Brony!

      • #241 by Eatings on 2011.09.09 - 9:20 am

I agree with Melody_Chase on the Paz’s being gone all together. I had 1 single paz there though. Which was a pretty cool place to have my paz, since Zephyr was notorious… But it was horrible to not let NEW people have a chance at having their time-share there. Plus there were too many traps in Zephyr. haha

Thanks MW for the update and glad to hear about the successes from the GP3D’s and the work in progress.

I understand the inability to reserve PAZ locations, but can you confirm if that also means we will be unable to “Put Back” our Paz’s to their previous location when we are back in world?

    • #243 by Camel on 2011.09.07 - 1:26 pm

I imagine it would depend on how important they felt that data was when they wrote the code to do the import. It’s possible that they just ‘bought’ you a brand new PAZ of the same type, and it’s totally vanilla. I suppose only time will tell, unless you can get the answer from a GP that is able to test it.

interesting and cool. still dying to know about hoods, and of course hood lots. wondering if, providing hoods are available first for a specified period of time to their previous owners (that would, in one case, be me) the lots would remember where to drop? it would be a lot of work if not, but would not be tragic. it would still be helpful to have dibs on one’s beloved hood.

  101. #247 by NoBioN on 2011.09.06 - 10:09 pm

Sad to hear the one seater of mine might not be there. It was quite costy to obtain as well. Sounds like things go well though 🙂

  102. #248 by soede on 2011.09.06 - 9:54 pm

No deformed faces is acceptable! Especially if they come with well greased morphing sliders!!

    • #249 by Greenie on 2011.09.07 - 1:03 pm

Well greased, with slide lock, if you please?

    • #250 by hugsalot on 2011.09.08 - 10:24 am

thank you for the update. 🙂

  105. #253 by Anachron on 2011.09.06 - 9:35 pm

So… you are apologizing that you’ll have to clean the place up before you invite guests in. Wow. Then, I’m sorry I’ll have to enjoy There so much. 🙂

As long as I can drop a PAZ on the ocean and use super-slick near-zero-friction to gain speed to do a super jump… I’ll be happy. 🙂 [my fav. thing to do in There]

    looking forward to 3d again.

  106. #254 by _Overscore on 2011.09.06 - 9:32 pm

  107. #255 by MrScrooge on 2011.09.06 - 9:32 pm

  109. #257 by toufovou on 2011.09.06 - 9:30 pm

Nice update. Soon that big question that was always in my mind will be answered. How much load the new servers can take? I suppose they already can take more than the old servers in There1.
    Looking forward to that update.

Btw… can I be a little bit of a brat and ask one BIG question????

When is YOWNOW opening? It is scheduled for this month but I don’t see an opening date in their website. (Not that I ever expected to see one) 😀

    • #258 by MrScrooge on 2011.09.07 - 9:44 am

I don’t know but I do know that you and I won’t be able to join their “world” because we’re banned for ever and ever. I just hope someone finally got Mr. Reid some much needed mental heath help. I am being serious about that, I’m not sure why everyone laughs when I write that out. I know it sure worked wonders for me and I hope it will for Reid as well or whatever personality is in control of Reid at the moment. I’m being serious here, folks!

  110. #259 by OzGate on 2011.09.06 - 9:24 pm

I wish we could have horizontal PAZs for the purpose of making roads. Would that be hard to implement?

    • #260 by Camel on 2011.09.07 - 1:14 pm

I’ve always thought it would be a great idea to make it easier to place two adjacent zones – be they PAZs or lots. People spend a lot of time lining these things up, and it’s a lot harder than it could be. I’m sure they’re too busy to think about this right now, though.

    • #261 by jimony on 2011.09.07 - 1:37 pm

All PAZs are already horizontal. I think you meant rectangle choices in lot shapes?

    • #262 by Babs There on 2011.09.07 - 8:05 pm

What I think Ozgate meant was that pazes are much higher than they are wide or long when you look at their overall dimensions. What he was probably asking is if one could be tipped on it’s side 90 degrees so there would be more decorative space side to side instead of up and down. 😀

      • #263 by OzGate on 2011.09.09 - 1:09 am

        That’s precisely what I meant Babs, thank U 😀

  111. #264 by freecreed on 2011.09.06 - 9:19 pm
