SamSyn and Bruce have fielded a new client for the GP3Ds, and the list of new ones prepared (not sure if the invites have been sent out yet).
In the meantime, we heard the existing GP3Ds were conducting some rigorous tests, and we were able to sneak up on them and capture a shot of them testing the grueling, er, exhausting, er…well, not quite sure what that activity is:
OOO…maybe we should be all swank and call them the “First Five”…er, wait there’s six..Ok, the “Super Six”, oh there’s another, OK, the “Sinister Seven”.. oh never mind!

A note for Sad-Thereian, to my understanding if you saved your paz, you can do a put back for you paz to come back out where you left it. That is what I am going to do when I get back into There. Quick question, would paz community have the ability to have paint ball drops up in space? does space neighborhoods have paint ball drops? I am going to bring back GreenAngel’s SpaceSerenity up in Space and I just wonder about it.

I’m lost also ~smile~ I was on the IM at one point, got to see my inventory list, chat with a few friends. but during a update/change or something I was off a few days & missed something!!! Started getting the errors msg. etc. NOW… I can’t even see my inventory list from There Central, I was feeling like I was “Lost In Space”.

Brandyn asked if I could do something with decorating a PAZ. I did not really have any saved PAZ layouts from before ( at least not any that this avatar has the parts for) but I did have this set leftover, and it was rather complicated to set up. The parts were made in 2004 and back then before the nudger it required a lot of looking at the ground and a lot of looking at the ceiling to put it together. So in this video I have previously set up the PAZ, then I freeze and saved the layout then I reloaded it. Seems to have worked perfectly. The bit where I am staring up at the roof.. well I don’t think I had those parts quite aligned before in the first place.

I have one question, I never really messed around with PAZ’s ever. Is a saved neighborhood lot layout able to be converted into a PAZ? As in am would I be able to load one of my old neighborhood lot layouts into a PAZ?

The first question Brandon, is whether or not you saved your layouts from “\There\ThereClient\UserData\gk_layouts\” as that is where the client keeps them. The server only keeps the ‘current’ state.
I believe that paz and funzones files all share the same location, however if the layout doesn’t show up in your list you might need to use the layout editor to tweak one of the ‘zone’ settings if it notices the difference between zone types.
If i remember correctly, there are only two types of layout files, those for ThereHouses (hk_layouts) and those for PAZ/Funzones (gk_layouts). I didn’t spend much time decorating Lots so I can’t be 100% sure, but other than a potential tweak to the layout header you should be great with a PAZ the same size or larger than your Lot.
The layout editor will mostly be your friend if the shape of the terrain is different in your new location. π

I can understand why you would want your location back and why you’d be a little bummed thinking you might not get it. I think it’s human nature to want everything to go back to “just like it was.” It’s like going home again after being gone awhile. I remember my first year of college I came home for the holidays after being gone for months and found they had cut down the big tree that stood in the middle of my neighborhood park. I stood there staring at the empty spot and just cried. I had so many wonderful memories involving that tree. My initials and my first boyfriends were carved in it, It was the first tree i ever climbed, I got my first kiss under it’s branches, etc. I wanted it to always stay the same. I have a lot of special memories of There too and I’d bet you have some pretty special memories that took place in that paz as well. So yeah, I get it why it makes you sad to think you might not get it back.
But you never know, you might get it back. You might be the first one to get there when the world opens and re-claim your spot. Hey, it could happen! So try not to let it get you down too much. And even if you don’t get it, at least you’ll be back in There. A year ago, none of us thought we’d ever get to log in again. So try to look on the bright side if you can. π

I think that was my sky Paz above Duda Beach. What happened is that I had 2 pazs side by side, and an object sticking into the other paz. The next day the objects were shifted a bit, and when I picked up the ramp, that moment, the object, Paz, and I were all on the ground in an instant, was about 2004 I think. Somehow the server did not like me picking up the object, because it’s drop point shifted to the adjacent paz, then all was on the Ground.

I wish Snoopy. I have tried DX8,DX9 (my graphics card won’t support it– I think), OGL. I have uninstalled my graphics driver and re-installed it. I have deleted There completely and swept it off my computer completely. I feel like an idiot, being unable to solve this. Maybe I should have taken more computer courses instead of literature. Sadly, it’s looking like I am going to have to buy a laptop soon which I won’t be able to afford for a few months at least. Last night I was able to log in without system errors or seg vios, I rodemy buggy, bacio, and hoverboard. I played with my poor starved dog that looks like me. Even though my avatar looks messed up I had a great time. I’m not sure what else to do other than buying a new laptop, thank goodness they are cheaper these days so it’ll only take me a few months to save up enough.

First thing to try, if you haven’t, is check that you have the most current drivers for your video card; most cards support DX9 in software, rather than firmware, so if your drivers are out of date, you may get buggy DX9 rendering. OGL was never all that good — I’d get all kinds of clipping errors (seeing “under” the terrain, mostly) when I tried to run it, and it was slower than DX9, at least on the video I had when I started There. You may need to use a “driver cleaning” utility to get rid of all traces of your old drivers before installing the new (this is especially a problem with older ATI chipsets).
Failing new drivers solving the problem, it’s probably significantly cheaper to buy a new graphics card that is known to support DX9 than it is to buy a laptop — I can get PCI Express 16x cards with (IIRC) 256 MB VRAM for around $80 locally, and that’s with a chipset that supports DX9 natively. Assuming your computer isn’t right on the edge for power supply and has a free slot (either PCI Express or plain PCI — check before you buy, so you get the right kind of card), it should be easy to plug such a card in, load the drivers, and have your problem solved.
BTW, don’t feel bad — my last three non-emergency computer upgrades were prompted by Myst, URU, and There, in that order.

MrScrooge, go to Start > Run > then type “dxdiag” without quotes. You might get a pop up box, click “ok”. Wait for it to load. Then click on the “Display” tab. Take a screen shot using Print Screen, and pasting it into MS Paint or another image software, and upload it to ImageShack and show it to us. After you do that, download the program mentioned here: http://gregs-blog.com/2007/12/16/how-to-find-which-opengl-version-youre-running/ Go to the OpenGL tab, expand the “Core features” tab, and take a screen shot, and show us on here. After that I am sure I can help you.

Is it a branded one? Like Dell or HP?
What kind of graphics does it have? On board or a plug in card?
If a plug in, what type is it? AGP or PCI ?
What is your CPU? Intel or AMD and the Model.
Also what type of memory is your computer using? SD, DDR, DDR2, DDR3 ?
And the size of your power supply. 300, 400, 500 watts?
I built a computer that works just fine for less than $300.00
The one I’m on now cost me $336.00 a couple of weeks ago but I used the old Video Card, Power Supply and Case.
If your willing to build one, you can get by nicely for around $500.00 and still be able to kick Phill41’s butt π

I forgot to say, it looks like they updated the “OpenGL Extensions Viewer” program, and to view the “core features” you need to click the “Report” link on the left side. This will tell you what version of OpenGL you are running, and what core features your graphics card supports.

First thing I’d try before messing with all the technical stuff: Make a new user account in windows, Install There within that user logon. This would eliminate a possible conflict between another program (that you might not even be aware is running)

MrScrooge, well, I regret to inform you that you have a very old graphics controller. Your graphics controller drivers are up to date, and your dxdiag looks the way it should (considering you must have a Dell that created updated unsigned drivers for your graphics card), and your controller can only support OpenGL 1.3 for the rest of it’s life… so all that looks normal. Besides buying a new computer, the only thing I can suggest you do is set run there in DX8 mode, and play around with the Hardware Acceleration slider and see if it fixes your issue. Here is a step by step guide to changing your Hardware Acceleration in Windows XP: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ht/hardwareacc.htm Let me know if changing the Hardware Acceleration fixes your problem.

Aw bummer π¦ I knew my graphics card sucked but I didn’t think it would be a problem since I had already used There on it for three years. I am so sad but there is no way I’m going back to KidVerse. I have been wanting to buy a laptop for awhile now so I could start work on a novel so that’s what I will do, I will save and eventually I will rejoin the wonderful world of There.

I agree with MW, there is no reason your computer can’t run There. It should work fine, especially if it has run There before. However, I am starting to think it is a hardware issue, and your computer might be showing signs of failure. Distorted graphics like you are experiencing is sometimes common when there is an issue with video memory. However, your graphics controller doesn’t have dedicated video memory, instead it uses your system memory (RAM). I am thinking your system memory might be going bad, and I suggest you run “Memtest86+” to find out. You see, when memory starts to go bad sometimes only small areas of it go bad, and the rest continues to work. So when games like There load 3D models (like an avatar) which contain many vector points (x,y,z) onto memory, and then it tries to read and display those vector points every frame, it might read a totally incorrect value because the memory is bad. Example: It will try to load (5,5,5) but it will read (0,5,0). This will cause what some call “poly spikes”. Read this webpage for more info: http://www.playtool.com/pages/artifacts/artifacts.html Scroll down to the second example image, and you will see “spikes”, sort of like what you are experiencing. So if I were you I would test your system memory (RAM) with “Memtest86+”.

A few pictures of my first day of doing the GP thing~ the welcome walkway and on marooned with the dog~ mostly exploring, talking to other Gps, testing things out and a little organizing… for all of you who had the wonderfully organized inventory… it all comes back in separate pieces.. LOL It will give you something to do! The world is running well, we will have our lag monster moments. A good bit of the world hasn’t been reloaded yet, but it’s coming along. I had to go peek at the old Cosmo, its just a flat piece of land with the sidewalk around it and no trees or buildings or anything. ( I am totally hoping Samsyn loads it soon lol)

Given that There’s relationship with Cosmo is probably broken (like that with Coca-Cola), I suspect Cosmo-Girl will revert to just another little batch of spas, faux shops, and stage, as it was before Cosmo-Girl went in (the only change I recall, come to that, was a bit more color).

So everyone is going to have the wonderfully UNorganized inventory that I’ve always had. LOL. That’s evil and i shouldn’t be so delighted about that but you know what they say… misery loves company. And all those organized people who could always find things used to bug me when I had to search for hours through the unorganized mess I called an inventory to find anything. π

There Tiki Houses! I am so excited to be back in a There.com house! Nothing says there.com so much for me as a tiki house! In this test video I am loading a saved layout from 2010 inside a tiki house in Twin Bridges that I rented temporarily for testing purposes. After this test I laoded a different house layout as well and both seemd to work pretty darn good!

Yes Satarall, it is next (or real close) to the old Yacht Clubhouse, they left Twin Bridges way before There Closed. I think he gave the place to his daughter the last year they was there. He was my neighbor for a long long time.

I agree about the houses, Francis. I hadn’t lived in a house in years before There closed but there is just something about the houses that I love. They are so unique to There. Instead of a neighborhood lot, I might rent a There house again when I get to go home.

POIDs would refer to your particular ‘copy’ of an object, however the layout’s only store the product id the of object (as you can see with the layout editor or a raw text editor).
That is the cause of some of the ‘vanishing’ objects, where you have an item saved in multiple in layouts. If you take out multiple layouts at the same time (in different zones), you may be trying to load more copies than you own, so one would be taken from one of your open layouts.
And if your going back and forth between zones and reloading the layout, it could certainly seem like the layouts were tied to POIDs. Just means you need to buy one more. π

There did appear to be a small difference, but it is hard to be sure, my memory for what the buggies looked like before may be a bit vague.
It may be like the difference in our avatars. In certain places you can see more difference in the avatar look than in others.
Lighting, like in a darker room seems to make the differences stand out more.

As you probably know the Coke Accounts in There1 had a different interface, like the bottom bar was red or something I can’t remember, etc.
Will that still be effective?
I hated it, so it wouldn’t hurt my feelings if it wasn’t. It made everything feel slower for me, probably because it was an extra load on the client.

Wait a minute, I’ve sailed in boats that don’t draw a meter (which is about the average depth, though wave troughs get only about knee deep). With a little care in redesigning the daggerboard or leeboards, you could make a small sailboat sail in as little as a foot (I’m hoping to build one in that class soon).
Now, getting anything to float on There water is a whole other problem — even a hoverboat full of feelium sinks in There water.

A couple things: first, lots of people loved There and were very, very bummed to see it shut down, apparently including many of those who made There run, and second, Michael Wilson (and There staff, presumably) found a model that would let them run There at, if not a profit, at least not at tens of thousands of dollars a month deficit (in fact, it’s looking like a bit better than break even, right from the start, based on the last numbers we had on recovered avatars).

I think I’ve seen that before in my years of game development. Have you tried uninstalling all of your graphics card drivers, and re-installing them? You might need to use Driver Sweeper. If that doesn’t work, reinstall DirectX, and if that doesn’t work you might need to try a different video card, and if that doesn’t work, it might just be a There’s software…

I had a lot of issues with this sort of thing a few years back after I built my first SLI machine. It ran some BFG cards which wer enone too well designed as it turned out, but one of th things they did not do well at all was OpenGL. Changing to DX8 helped a lot. I ended up ditching the cards in a single better card and most of my problems went away. I also saw similar artifacts in Second Life, which at the time, was completley OpenGL based.
Try stwitching to DX8 and restarting the cleint maybe? Or DX9. Maybe that would help.

I kept logging into world , lasting 30 seconds and get seg vios and then crashing, BABS and Salty told me switch it to DX9 and all problems solved, so maybe give that a shot?

That one might not work in There2 — I suspect that uses the “deformed faces” bug that Michael said wouldn’t be back. Other applications will most likely depend on what they are; we already have evidence that Bedican compass works (I’ve seen the bar in Francis7’s videos). I expect most inventory managers and such will also work as they did before, but we’ve been informed that hair patches using Coca-Cola hair are piracy (which is grounds for banning, according to the last TOS I read), and anything that exploits a bug is technically grounds for a ban (though sky-PAZ and overlapped PAZ were originally bugs, of sorts, too, and now they’re standard methods).
I personally used very few add-ons — GPS for Dummies (has *anyone* heard from BtSt?), which includes Bedican compass is the only one I can recall. I might consider installing an inventory bar if I find myself wanting/needing to (for instance) teleport to sky destinations without platforms and put on a hoverpack while falling (I never did master the canonical method of dropping the pack and putting it on as I fall past — fingers are too slow, I think).

Yes, I hope BtSt will be back! But, in any case, I do plan on using the GPSD (primarily the Bedican) — How on earth (or There!) can one get around World without the Bedican??!!!!
Also, am hoping that Tabletronix’s BBOY Quickbar will work — have to brush up on that! I was using that one also.
Umm… will you be hosting those GPSD races again? I do hope so– they were so much fun!

The GPSD races and course management are dependent on a server BtSt maintained. Without that server, GPSD won’t perform any of its functions, though the other compass upgrades available through the GPSD compass manager ought to still function. I’m still not sure if we’ll be resuming the Flying Low race series even if BtSt restores the server (or passes the project to someone else) — Thoreau, Alisah, and I were the hosts and we’ve all showed up on ThereIM, so the possibility at least exists, but I can’t promise anything.

Unfortunately, one of the things that was fixed before There closed is dropping vehicles from more than 10m or so off the ground. They fixed this to prevent people from griefing and “buggy bombing” some of the new member islands like Zona. I’ve tested it and it is still in effect, so taking out vehicles without some solid surface under you just doesn’t work. It will just give you a message that you’re to high above nearest surface if not.

Heh. I see an instant work-around for that, but the only use I’ve ever had for dropping stuff from on high was trying to drop a buggy onto the head of the Sphinx over on Egypt (from high enough that I could keep a hoverpack on — and from 500 meters up, it is *not* easy to do).
Oh, but what you’re saying is it’s no longer possible to drop a *hoverpack* while falling? Well, it’s easier anyway to drop a PAZ (preset with a platform, at a minimum) and then re-teleport into the PAZ, then drop your hoverpack or hoverboat as needed.

I’d be extremely surprised if paintball is free after the 3D world opens — sail of paint is revenue for Makena. More likely, Guinea Pigs have been given certain perks so they can test effectively — like unlimited paint, free house rent and/or funzone rent, and so forth.

Paintballing is still going to cost. Okalnix has a very rare gun called a Renegade. Although it has unlimited ammo, it shoots slower, and weaker than normal bootleggers.

Hey, 0ne1 here! I just recently discovered that There was re-opening, and by accident, so I am late to this party! Did Michael Wilson send out e-mails to previous There members about the re-opening? If not, I think he should (might be lots of fake e-mails though). I’m really glad There is coming back, and that I was able to retrieve my legacy account and T$! I was kind of disappointed when I wasn’t eligible for the T$ Buy Back because of something I did wrong, and I had lost a little over half a million T$. However, I just now got it all back! Awesome! I am also happy that I can now enjoy the Luxury Jet Model 1 that I made and was released the day There announced it was closing! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTfqfnGXit0 I can’t wait to start making more yachts, and jets, and other objects! There was the best place to make and sell art/content, and I can’t wait to start again. I wish I could do something to help There2 come back to life. This is amazing news. This would seem the client is running well, and there ready to let more people in. Guys were so close I can taste it. I just hope people dont start complaining if they dont get chosen to be a tester or not. We should all just be so happy our game is so close to coming back.

I agree with Snoopy here. It’s obvious the testers were not so much as random picks, but imagine if they were how the testing would have been. We’d have ppl hardly online testing, people picking one thing to do for fun and not looking for bugs, and we’d probably still be where we were 2-3 weeks ago. The only thing I could have done myself if chosen would be to load the world before it opens lol. I’d still be waiting for the colors to come in and the avatars to not look like mirrors. They picked people they felt would be better to find the bugs faster, which was to our benefit. With that said I thank each of you who are testing and finding/reporting the bugs to help us all get back home faster. β€

I don’t think people will complain. The beta testers are the beta testers. That could never be repeated. Being a GP is being a GP. As long as things move along quickly who cares. IMO…it’s not really a fresh start…just a diff setup.

Put aside all the resentment, grudges and all the drama that was the OLD There.
Of course, there will always be a few that can not let go. Those were the individuals I was talking about.
Paintball is one of the sports that is very competitive. In the heat of battle, there are times when all, or most of us forget to be courteous. Those are the times that start most of the drama. The ratings are another. Ratings are pretty worthless because they can be cheated and some individuals did exactingly that.
Bottom line: If we all let go and give this NEW There a chance, I think it will be a lot better world for ALL of us! And, a lot more competitive for those crazy few of us, that enjoy Paintball way to much π

Aloha and I do agree with your statements about starting a new in Hawaii its called ” Ho’oponopono” ( is an ancient Hawaiian practice of reconciliation and forgiveness) I love the idea. But it takes 2.
XSnoopy, you have a forgiving heart that allows you to put aside your differences .. BUT I believe you are the kind of man that never held a grudge. for me its hard to find trust once someone has gone out of their way to make my There.com experience miserable when ever they had the chance, I can forgive but I will never forget .
As for some of the other issues its rather petty and drama driven. People need to keep in mind that in order for There.com to be successful some need to put their drama driven lifestyles in check and keep in mind that In There.com Everyone should be Equal, NO one person should be placed above the others and no one person should be made to feel NOT welcome. This will keep members happy, spending while making there.com their New Home or make the old members return Home with OUR arms open wide to greet them back.
Gossip hurts all in the long run.. so here is food for thought.. If soneone is talking about someone else to you, it won’t belong before that same person is talking about you to someone else.

Just to clear things up,
I’m not complaining, I know I won’t be a tester. I just jump in here and joke around about it, nothing better to do. It’s all in fun!! I know I will get in when it’s time for us all to go home and that’s what matters to me. My hats off to all the testers, GP’s you guys are doing a great job, keep up the good work! I don’t know anything about killing bugs anyway unless I got a can of raid. Also thanks for all the great videos you guys posted They are fun to watch so we all get to see whats going on and we get to see There again. So BIG THANKS TO ALL THE TESTERS and to MW for making it all happen!!

DetectedX, if you are really interested in being involved, you should pay more attention to the previous posts. MW has stated numerous times that the more you ask, beg, hint, bribe, etc. to be a tester, the less chance you have of it ever happening.
Also, there is a difference between being a newbie and being a βnoobβ. While you may have some experience in game, being a Therian for all of six months still makes you a newbie to many of us who have been around since the beginning. As for your statements about behavior – maturity, respect, and common courtesy do not define whether or not you are a βnoobβ, but they are traits that everyone should strive to exhibit.
Please just be patient like the rest of us and things will happen in good time.

Jason, wow, I’m impressed you would openly confess you being under 18. Look at all the kids on that website. There is no way you are over 18 and attend that school. Unless of course, you got held back, then that would also explain the grammar you’re currently using. Michael Wilson has stated several times that There will be strictly 18 and over and if you’re not 18+ he will catch you.

I ask about the credit card thing as how would you really know someone is really underage?
I have been accused of being underage in here just from my spelling, at 37 it would be nice to be young again but itβs not the case.
With out some sort of verification, it would be really hard to know 100% that someone is underage.
And as a paying customer, you canβt ban them on a suspicion unless they outright say there underage.
Just wondering how this will be done?

I had a look over the TOS, I will be honest and say there are some things in there I donβt fully understand, but thats ok, its your call.
A monthly fee is ok with me, will there be discounts for say a 12 month period?
Yes it would be silly letting all know how you would work the system you have setup, if you know the system, then you can work around it. (didn’t think when i asked)
I have nothing against the kids, but they can be as anointing as noobs.
With that been said, I have noting against noobs, just quit asking me for stuff and donβt ask me to come sit down with you! (Asking how to do things, then thatβs ok)

After thinking about it I am a little happy there was nothing in my email,. I have so much work on right now I donβt think I would be able to give it as much time as I would like to. Could spend some time on nights but thatβs about it.

It is so gratifying to learn that We have someone like you who is brave enough to provide your underaged avi name, as well as being so wise and understanding of the workings of There after experiencing the world for all of 6 months! I am certain (not speaking for Mr. Wilson) that you will receive free membership when the world re-opens. I also am certain that others of us,who have been members for “generations” compared to you, who worked, for example, as greeters, Island Guides, Helpers, and other sorts of world engineers (Gonna miss you Sprinx) and personnel (Both paid and volunteer), will bow to your vast and uneding wealth of knowledge about everything THERE. First of all (if anyone really cares), I agree with #33 Brandyn (although MW would need to do far less than investigate websites to check if each individual is over the age of 18). The bashing (especially of a kid) shows a lack of leadership, individuality and maturity, and may even expose a few more character flaws. Do you want your esteemed leader becoming depressed while gazing down at his flock (whom I believe this resurrection has really been all about), of his adult members and what seems most important to them… in such an exciting time? I think not. (Agreed?) Perhaps we should raise the age requirement to 19 and a half, and eliminate this sect as well. Just my opinion. Then again, I never favored bullies taking peoples lunch money either.
Anyway, perhaps someone will find this short clip amusing, if nothing else, while we all try to remain patient. Enjoy! :]

Please excuse my ADHD. I was merely expressing a personal opinion of mine. One which I hope does not appear to change the color of my nose to a slightly darker shade. Nevertheless, it is a true opinion. That opinion being… I do not believe that you, Michael Wilson, are engaged in this return of “the world” simply for profit. If you were, it would never have been such a unique place to begin with. I was just pointing out that in my honest opinion, a large (if not the largest) deciding factor in the reopening of THERE, was it’s inhabitants, the ‘Therians’, (whom I believe this resurrection has really been all about). We, the people.
I’d also like to take this opportunity to point out, since my record of events over the past year or so has probably not been quite noticeable enough on it’s own, (and while trying to avoid degrading the character of certain other organizations), that I do regard myself as a fairly excellent judge of character. If I may say so myself. The CEO in my opinion, is really who ‘makes’ the company, and ultimately, its ethics/policies. Well… at least he/she should, such as I assume we can all see is evident with Makena Technologies. This company is a reflection of yourself. I for one would be honored to work for and with such a company, in any department. In fact, I am currently preparing to relocate to California almost immediately, just in case. Then, whether or not I end up coming to work for the company so carefully of my choice, at least I will be nice and warm, climbing palm trees in California, instead of… pine trees, in Pennsylvania. ‘boo
In any case, a personal thank you for making the decision to reopen this incredible and (arguably), unsurpassed, virtual world. Godspeed.
