Never say die…

SamSyn submitted another excellent client to the GP3D’s, fixing, among other things, the Voice Over Im problem (yet another public vs private IP issue), speeded up inventory (again), and the “Loading Forever” issue for many products.

You all may be wondering where these bugs came from.

Well, we all know about the “Public vs Private IP” issues. That’s a result of us being “in the cloud”. Actually, it’s nothing to do with the cloud, it’s just that we now have “in house” internet addresses which are private to us, and you (the public have your own). This was “forced” on us by being in the Amazon Cloud, but I actually think it’s a GOOD thing.

The “Loading Forever” issue was actually a bug someone introduced some weeks before we closed, and, uh, well, didn’t tell us about it, so QA didn’t catch it. We actually suspect a lot of members were seeing problems with their products, and we didn’t make the connection.

The “speeding up the inventory” issues are things which are so ghastly, SamSyn couldn’t resist fixing them.

We’ve also loaded up more scenes (places in the world), and Bruce has had to spin up more servers because we have more objects in world.

For those of about about to tell us “Make the World Smaller so it costs less”, our Amazon costs for August, with quite a bit of the world loaded was….(drumroll)…$3089.71.

I know everyone wishes things would go faster, as we do, but to tell you the truth, I don’t know how we’d handle it if all of you were in world and having the issues the GP3Ds are having. We are SO happy with the amount of work they’re doing, and you should be too. I know you all could test it as well, but we couldn’t handle the deluge of emails of all of you reporting the same problem. Seriously, think about it.

That being said, the next step is to invite another slug of GP3Ds, and then we’ll open it up for all of you with the “Beta Test” privileges. “Beta” here means “You know, the tests we used to run before the releases”.

P.S. Oh, I Was going to say, sometimes I wish we could make an island of Giant Golden Statues of the GPs and GP3D’s. Think how that would look!

P.P.S. Who can guess where that picture was taken? (No, the answer is not “a graveyard”).

Last night I got talking with some. Some don’t read wordpress others don’t use facebook. We need to let those that don’t know they will need a paypal acct. I spoke with Laylita and she had no idea. She will relay that to those from group_iplanet. So might be wise to get the word out to our friends 🙂 I have also given them links to here and the Therian groups on FB. DO YOU have a paypal acct! if not better get it done 🙂 hugs mimi06

    • #5 by Michael Wilson on 2011.10.06 - 8:26 am

You actually don’t need a PayPal account, but you will have to pay through paypal (at least). And there may be other checks to prove you are 18 or older.

      • #6 by mimi06 on 2011.10.06 - 11:04 am

k, thanks.. leave it to me to mess it up.. Been a while since I was carded.. rofl.. looking forward to it 🙂 will relay that to all of them 🙂

This is not related to anything, but I wonder how feasible it would be to tweak the distance settings for the terrain MIP-mapping. Now that there are so many HD textures in the foreground, the abrupt texture swapping and low-res terrain stand out a bit more.

I’m 100% sure this is something that has already crossed the mind of everyone involved long ago. Just thinking out loud (er.. in print) really.

  7. #10 by Philip Thereian Key on 2011.10.05 - 7:03 pm

Since several Thereians on here are referencing There groups on Facebook, I thought a list of the larger groups would be helpful. There are many with 1-3 members, these are the ones that have a decent following listed by number members…

    *ThereIM
    http://www.facebook.com/groups/therechatroom/
(a group for There News and Updates)

    *there.com Survivors
    http://www.facebook.com/groups/admin.there.com.survivors/
(formed after the close to help Thereians keep in touch)

    *The Lost Avies of There.com
    http://www.facebook.com/groups/LostAviesofThere/
(formed as There.com closed to help link Thereian avie names with FB names. Now working to help memebrs list what priamry avie they’ll be using)

    *The Thereian Community
    http://www.facebook.com/groups/ThereianCommunity/
(group that’s memebrs post on all things There, from pics, videos and updates and event postings)

    *Virtual Worlds Fan
    http://www.facebook.com/groups/virtualworldsfan/
(not JUST for There, but has MANY Thereian members and topics. Covers not just There but the worlds that name went to after the close and are now coming back from to go “home”)

    *ThereIM add buddy Group
    http://www.facebook.com/groups/159668227441277/
(group formed after the ThereIM came back on line to allow members to post their There avie name that they recovered and are on There IM with)

    *Island Guides of There™
    http://www.facebook.com/groups/119005285983/
(a group that’s been around before the close, specifically for former Island Guide memebrs)

    *There.com Help and Support
    http://www.facebook.com/groups/ThereHelp/
(a group formed to provide member supported help. Place to ask questions on installation, connections and support questions to take some stress of the There staff that’s busting their rears getting There back up and going)

    *Thereian Sims_The Clueless Few
    http://www.facebook.com/groups/251192734911160/
(group formed for Thereians playing the FB game, The Sims Social)

    *Life-In-There
    http://www.facebook.com/groups/227714713927441/
(small group but brand new and is FB group for the old site, http://www.life-in-there.com/ that is back up and running)

They are all a great way to keep in touch with your fellow Thereians, get the latest news and updates and also a GREAT place to get member supported help when you need it, so we don’t always have to bog down There staffers with issues with known fixes.

    • #11 by Brandyn_1 on 2011.10.06 - 9:55 am

Oh hey! Look theres the Facebook group I founded on top! To bad people decided to go behind my back and take it, then let it go to crap. Oh well, I made a name for myself helping people with the updates ect. Which is something I loved to do, and didn’t plan on stopping.

Some people are just so ignorant aren’t they? 😀

      • #12 by Philip Thereian Key on 2011.10.07 - 2:34 am

Too bad you almost killed the group and also lied about the fact that you were 15, even after we found out your were underage you still kept lying about it. Not to mention YOU didn’t found the group. Not to mention we have now made it the one of the most successful groups on FB and get comment after comment thanking us for making the changes we did. Glad you finally told the truth. Maybe more people your age that are trying to sneak in will learn and give it up.

So one of my friends and I were talking about there and we were just curious as to know what made you name “there” there?

    • #18 by dadamonk on 2011.10.05 - 6:20 pm

There.com was founded by Jeffrey Ventrella and Will Harvey in 98′, neither are still with the company. However Jeffrey Ventrella wrote in his book, “Virtual Body Language”:

“Now that visual virtual worlds have become established, and input devices like the Wii are bringing our bodies more intimately into these immersive spaces, virtual embodied communication is bringing “place” onto center stage. For someone like myself who came of age working on fully visual virtual worlds, the sense of place is central to experience design. This is why Will and I named our virtual world “There”. It is a virtual place where the spatial aspects of bodily interaction are critical to the experience. ”

Because I never know what exactly to write here. Yay, last night I watched as Samsyn added many scenes to THERE! Cannery Row, Scion , and not sure what it was called but on Frosty the Festive tree’s and gift lot! Worlds filling up with alot of tree’s, landmarks, fun zones, looking so much more like OUR THERE! I don’t seem to have many major problems. My inventory loads incredibly fast. There are many, many pictures being posted in the There Community pages on FB. Hope you take time to see them 🙂 See you all soon! hugs! Thank you again MW and crew!

All I have to say is Nancy Grace did a cameo for There.com on TV – She said in the form of a question: Are we there yet?

Brought a smile to my face. She has a There account – shes being quiet.

Anyways – Great news from the CEO and all the wonderful GPs. Can we stop calling them GPs and call them.. how should we say.. Souix Indians? Or anything else BUT pigs?

So is the There world almost opened then?

    • #31 by ForTehLulz on 2011.10.04 - 10:46 am

We will have to see in the upcoming update I guess. Each update indicates how fast these engineers work-and that is extremely fast!
It would be great to be reading an update saying that the world is almost open but I guess we all have to be patient, thats life.

I’ve posted this 2 places on Facebook. For all of you that haven’t seen this go ahead please. 🙂
“Some of you probably already know this.. But I’d still like to inform everyone. 🙂

I’m going to let everyone know now. As I’ve already informed Samsyn. I will NOT be in There.com. As I’m not of age yet. I have a few more years to go. I would rather not take the chance in getting banned. I enjoy There.com and I will not be stupid and waste that. But I will follow along with There.coms news! I have asked Samsyn to hold my account until I become of age. 🙂 Please no harsh comments.”

      • #47 by jimony on 2011.10.04 - 2:29 am

I’m sure the mistake was simply because you just have such a pretty name! LOL
Brandyn, your maturity level is even further confirmed by your sense of humor in laughing at the little things. Although if someone calls me a girl, I am afraid I wouldn’t be as gracious or think of it as a little thing.

      • #48 by ForTehLulz on 2011.10.04 - 5:27 am

        No problem Brandyn..

@ Jimony Hahaha! I’ve been called “Brandy” for a big part of my life so far, I just brush it off. No point in getting upset over it. Especially when I can tell it was just a simple mistake 🙂

@softNdark LOL!! Well thank you very much. I have been always taught, treat people how you’d like to be treated. 🙂 Somethings are just silly to get upset over 🙂

      • #52 by Brandyn_1 on 2011.10.04 - 10:02 am

        Thanks for pointing that out.

Yes I did bull face lie to that. But think about it, would you like to be called out and attacked on this blog. No. I found that really rude for anyone to do so. No matter who they are or what they have done (Unless its people that have messed with the process of There re-opening, then the deserve to be bashed).
Thereains are kind to each other, well the REAL ones. You don’t seem to be. Yes that was my very first account that you pointed out there. I don’t think I did anything wrong there. But look I came forward before any “legal” rules were showed to us.
I’m not trying to be rude or nasty here in any sort, but really? Try to stop being better than everyone.. You seem like most people in middle school -__-

      • #53 by jimony on 2011.10.05 - 11:38 am

Everyone makes mistakes and every one of us are liars at some point in our lives. Making mistakes come very easy but admitting them can be very hard. I do wish the criteria for age could be calculated by maturity; except that would mean many of us “old timers” wouldn’t be allowed in.

  28. #54 by DodgeBoy101 on 2011.10.03 - 7:31 am

Tropical Adventures is an amazing feature to have.

  31. #73 by Yadoo95008 on 2011.10.02 - 4:47 pm

So I was originally able to login with ThereIM but now not anymore. I keep getting an error stating: “Unable to look up server address. Please check the connection and try again.” And then when I click on Details: “HTTP connection to 0.0.0.0 port 0 for timeout reached, canceling connection.” How can I get this fixed so I can sign back into ThereIM?

    • #74 by CardSharkRay on 2011.10.02 - 7:51 pm

delete the program then restart computer then reinstall and put in the conntion port address ya get in the email ..

    • #75 by Seg_Vio on 2011.10.02 - 8:45 pm

Try this and see if it fixes your problem:

Here are the same instructions as they will appear in new invitations:

After installing ThereIM, you will need to tweak it a little before it can contact the new There.com cluster
Locate the desktop shortcut which launches ThereIM
RIGHT-click on the icon and select ‘Properties’ from the popup menu
Locate ‘Target’ edit box on the properties dialog
Change the “-a xx.xx.xx.xx” part of the target to “-l http://webapps.prod.there.com/addrdisc/addrdisc” (Note: that -l is a small L not a one)
Close the properties dialog, and you should be able to log in to There.com with ThereIM”

      • #76 by Yadoo95008 on 2011.10.04 - 4:07 pm

I never had to do this even after installing. I still checked the properties and it was already set to that list above.

Layout works and so does the putback feature.
      sassydancer

      • #84 by Escape on 2011.10.04 - 1:05 pm

Just for clarification, the paz putback feature only works on paz’ that was newly dropped and picked up. Unfortunately (maybe MW will authorize a change) the old paz drop locations are not available. ‘wave

      • #85 by Greenie on 2011.10.05 - 1:47 pm

Thank You sassydancer and all of you GP’s,

Would the old layouts saved prior to closing contain the location information? Or is it, that the actual location information has changed?

Lessons learned. Quite a few of my builds are depending upon putback functioning.
It will be sort of like how it was before they cured us of the THERE Quakes every night.
        Always interesting… ;-P

Have you tried using TheChaz’s Layout Editor?

Any other reports on the editor GP3D’s?

      • #86 by CpnBob on 2011.10.06 - 7:34 am

Your right, Sassy, the layouts work. Everyone with layouts should save a fave place for layout drops for each layout, also save Paz or Lot drops for each paz or Lot drop. That way you can tp to fave paz, drop the paz from there, then tp to fave places to Layout and load layout as “original” .
Easy, huh? I’m in world, and have all 21 Lots ready to go, and all 21 Layouts to fill those lots, in the original pre-closing locations, all lined up on streets.

    • #87 by imsfan on 2011.10.03 - 2:55 am

What I mean is the Layout editor that was created by The Chaz which used XYZ coorindinates for precise placement of objects when building.

      • #88 by Ltbigdog There on 2011.10.03 - 4:46 am

The layout editor was tryed a few days ago and it all works except the Z axis (I think it was z, the one that make the item go up and down) my item was at about -24 and moved it and nothing and got up to about 1500 and still didnt move. I hopeing it just somthing on how the layouts are saved right now and it will all work out when There opens.

      • #89 by ForTehLulz on 2011.10.03 - 6:08 am

Oh, you will have to ask a GP3D about that I think…

  35. #90 by qweasdzxc979 on 2011.10.02 - 9:50 am

Hi everybody I desperately need help. I’ve been planning on designing a buggy for when there re-opens so I can submit it, And does anybody know where I can find the developer tools from there? The downloads on there aren’t functional at this time, so If anyone could tell me or send me a link on how to get it, I would deeply appreciate it!

    Thanks!!!

    • #91 by ForTehLulz on 2011.10.02 - 10:23 am

They’re not out yet. They will be released a short time AFTER the actual 3D world itself is released. Atleast-that is what I have heard…

      • #92 by qweasdzxc979 on 2011.10.02 - 12:27 pm

The idea would be to work on a buddy design for a month while the 3d client is released so that when its ready, you can instantly submit it :c

maybe there’s like a copy for download on the internet?

      • #93 by Greenie on 2011.10.04 - 12:38 am

        I checked thumdar.com and found zachc’s buggy template in the Virtual Worlds Downloads-There.com Downloads-Designer / Developer Tools – There.com-Templates-Buggy Template Layered AJ_1988 / ZachC.

That should get you started in the right direction.

        Have fun!

    • #94 by Greenie on 2011.10.03 - 4:12 pm

Unless I am mistaken, the only links to or ‘copies’ of THERE developer tools would be illegal.

There are templates available which you can use to paint your texture and have things land in their proper places. You would have to wait for the developer tools to preview your texture but if you follow the templates, things should be near ’bout if not submission ready.
I’m not a buggy painter so I’m not sure where some might be but a good place to start is http://thumdar.com . There are quite a number of THERE related downloads as well as some from other virtual worlds and more!

      • #95 by CpnBob on 2011.10.06 - 7:39 am

Greenie, that would probab ly be illegal, as Zach is currently on staff at a VW other than There, and designing there.

Yes i can see them. Are you about ready for some devilish quest?

  42. #110 by xxDRAGONFLYxx on 2011.10.01 - 6:43 pm

Very excited to see world getting closer to reopening. My husband (Sniperbait) and I have actually got enjoyment out of the pics. The bear one was kinda gross, but at same time interesting. Maybe we are odd, for see some that have complained about them. For us it has given us something to talk about and sometimes has led to Googling together trying to find info on it. So.. ty for on YOUR blog sharing something that you find interest in. It is your blog, and I think that some in there longing to get into the 3d world forget that. I am sorry I have not posted much on here, but honestly i usually sit next to my husband and we read and Youtube together so he in essense has said what we both were thinking… We run on a network in our house lol with desk in front of desk. Yes we are madly in LOVE!! 🙂
My hubs asked me to post this following part since I was on here: a quote he made and he posts one each time he comments.

Love is a beauty not explainable, but it can be seen in your lovers eyes.

    • #111 by Kayleigh Lace on 2011.10.01 - 10:25 pm

Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder. And one thing I have always liked about the internet and finding people – they get to know you and love you for who you are on the inside – then how they look is just gravy. And you love how they look because you love them.

    • #119 by xxDRAGONFLYxx on 2011.10.01 - 6:49 pm

The space hoods were neat! my hubs had surprised me with a hood lot in one of them and setup planets and scenery , was quite beautiful. 🙂

  48. #120 by qweasdzxc979 on 2011.10.01 - 11:21 am

I hate the jerks who are ranting about how long it’s taking. How long would it take, if MW never decided to reopen there.com huh? Even If I knew that there.com wouldn’t open for another 2 years, Its better than never opening at all?

    • #121 by fulkenstien on 2011.10.01 - 2:36 pm

i think some of the whinning is coming from a misunderstanding. There was up and running one day then it was shut down.so why cant it just be turned back on and be up and running just as fast?
because it’s a totally different animal now.they cant just reboot the servers and start over like it was the next day.
from my understanding it’s like moving from the house you grew up in to an apartment in a large apartment complex and your couch dont fit.

  49. #122 by AquaFresh on 2011.10.01 - 8:33 am

    Great update.

With all the loading of structures and textures I sure hope the weird “ghost” trees in monkey crater will still be there and “broken”

If you not sure what trees I’m on about, I’m talking about the trees where their testures consisted of alot of tiny trees and plants found in Monkey Crater, rest of the textures space was invisible.

Their location should be somewhat west of Star Garden 😀

    Aqua

    • #123 by migman on 2011.10.01 - 6:40 pm

I looked all around star garden and didnt see the trees ,i really liked them to.

      • #125 by AquaFresh on 2011.10.02 - 3:05 am

I found these ancient pictures from 2003 of the “ghost” trees, I post direct links to Flickr, no idea if I otherwise can add them directly like the youtube vids. 😀

        Ghost trees
        Ghost trees2

If anyone have better pictures like closeups please share 😀

I’ve been told that they atm. are standard trees 😦

Ofcourse its no disaster its just those funny things that made the world extra special.

Instead of bitching in the comments section for a personal blog of someone, don’t read here and just periodically check there.com’s main web page. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that one out.

      • #148 by 3cmaldito on 2011.10.01 - 8:13 pm

LOL, same o’l same o’l. if it’s not kenny passively instigating negative responses, is Tig bringing his rear like she is used too. Seriously is not anyone’s but MW blog and if someone wants to write “the 3D world suxs” on FB then so be it.

Just like everyone’s comments get moderated and posted positive or negative, so is expected that the opinions of each therian will be unique.

If your a GP3D go test something and quit trying to moderate or speak for MW, he does a good enough job with his sarcastic retorts to genuine criticism. No wonder he has not decided to open the world to the mass public, certainly Team Phoenix would not be able to handle all the emails of the people whining and complaining about Paz’s too close to each other or he banned me from this match or he is griefing me, here is a screen shot”now ban him from world.

      • #149 by Michael Wilson on 2011.10.01 - 9:02 pm

I pretty much don’t moderate comments here. I’ve marked some commentors as spam because, well, they are.

No wonder he has not decided to open the world to the mass public, certainly Team Phoenix would not be able to handle all the emails of the people whining and complaining about Paz’s too close to each other or he banned me from this match or he is griefing me, here is a screen shot”now ban him from world.

This is false. The reason we haven’t opened is that we’re not ready. We get bug reports, we fix them (and, most often, report it here), and send out new clients. We’re not going to open the world to the masses until we think we’re ready.

As for the “whining and complaining”, I made sure we introduced things like one-way zones, so not matter what people put outside your hood or zone, you didn’t have to see it. You can expect us to basically ignore such issues – you are all going to be adults, we’ve put tools in place to help mitigate griefy activities (yes, I made that word up), and we expect you act like adults.

        Just like the real world.

Finally, as for my “sarcastic retorts”, this happens to be my personal blog. As a rule, I try to be pretty patient and generally civil to others. However, if you saw 10% of the commentary and email I got – both when There was open, and after it closed (my favorites were “I’m going to come to the office and bomb it if you don’t re-open There”, and “I hope your baby dies”) – you might understand the “sarcastic retorts” occasionally. There’s really no reason I, or any other person, should be expected to respond kindly to some of the snark posted here.

Seriously folks, if you don’t like what I say here, don’t read it. In fact, dont’ ready through 970 pages of comments to find where I’ve been sarcastic or rude.

That’s my rant for the evening. Sorry !

Now now, why would you even contemplate such thoughts? I don’t want you to get upset settle down.

But I am curious, when you say “Don’t piss off the boss”, LOL have I ever? He certainly has not told me. (and we all know he is more than capable).

I just ask for an update every so often, BTW it was not me in FB criticizing the world’s appearance. I even complemented the picture this time. (something good was said).

You also mentioned IN-World invitations, now what would you know of when any given member will be able to enter in world, LMAO. If I understand your logic, giving one’s opinion, yields the same results as volunteering and directly asking to be a GP :/ Really?, I call smoke on that one.

But the most interesting comment is about my fun zone AA, I still hold the deed and any decisions regarding it’s possession are not for you to decide. This brings me back to my original piece of advice, please refrain from trying to act like you speak for MW, you were chosen to be a GP3D so just go test something,

Anyone sends any threats shouldn’t be tolerated. I don’t understand why people would do such a thing. I know There was amazing and it’s sill amazing, but no one should have the right to send any threat emails to anyone. I feel that our world has a long way to go until we all start treating others respectfully. People need to understand that patience is important to have. If you don’t have any patience, than how can you handle the real world? We all should know by now that it takes time to bring the world back. As a community we all should be working together and helping Michael Wilson and his team in bringing back There. As we continue working hard together, I believe that we can bring There back to the way it was if we all pitch in together. 🙂 As my quote says on my Therians Forever “Together As One”. 🙂

        @Ladyzuki,

I did not say I dislike the coments contained within, on the contrary is a nice change from reality. I even complemented this week’s picture selection.

I apologize if I lost you.

      • #159 by xSnoopy on 2011.10.03 - 12:03 pm

        3cmaldito,
“if it’s not kenny passively instigating negative responses”.
If that doesn’t fit into that very category, I don’t know what does.
You spent a lot of money buying Arctic before There closed.
If I may make a suggestion, I would be careful how much you piss the boss off. You may end up at the back of a VERY long line with little or NO chance of ever seeing the inside of Arctic again.
As for me, I said that to be helpful, not as a retort to your childish rants.
Hop your pack and fly over to SL. I wish you the best of luck there.
You also might be considered the former owner of Arctic.

I thought this was Mr Michael Wilson’s Blog, not a forum. There wont even be a forum in world, and I think thats GREAT! Mr Wilson could just post his updates and blog here, and not even allow replies.. There are a few regular replying bloggers that I hope I dont even run across in world, and they’re the reason I’m glad there will be no ThereForums this time. I’ll also be sure to put them on Ignore.

    • #162 by Kayleigh Lace on 2011.10.01 - 10:31 pm

So, dear Laura Smith, don’t come here and read them! There will open up when they are ready to open it up. In the meantime – I suggest the Harry Potter books – or maybe the Amelia Bedilia series. The latter has pictures, too!

Beta test of Cosmo Girl Village
Normaly its more dark there but til beta.
Also the zone is for Rent
Mabey we get a new owner you never know.

Good work Gp’s and the There Team.

Have fun to watch this small video

    • #170 by Geoschroy on 2011.09.30 - 5:38 pm

umm i thought after There closed..all the sponsors were no more..so cosmo girl village should revert back to Tiki Cove Plaza?I liked it better when it was Tiki Cove Plaza those day glo tiki buildings don’t mesh with the surounding area very well….:)

      • #171 by Cassitiny on 2011.10.01 - 12:22 am

I hope it stays the same, minus the cosmo girl wording. It was a great place to hold events in that stage, and to say how busy it usually was there, the lag was minimal in large events. (Ie: the talent shows that NJ held).

Hey CardSharkRay and the new GP3D’s, beta the hell out of this service.. Common goal is to open with minimal issues, right? ‘wave

    • #175 by Jinxed_Karma on 2011.09.30 - 6:24 pm

Man! How do you beg to be a GP3D without getting pushed to the back of the line?! Such a conundrum! Oh well, it’s fantastic to see such tremendous progress being made. Keep up the great work!

      • #176 by Christy Clendenen on 2011.10.01 - 5:22 am

Sometimes the back of the line is really the front of the line, it depends on what realm MW is working from that day 🙂

      • #177 by ARTIE on 2011.10.01 - 9:41 am

Well, I know Ray to be a long time member of the early beta testing group (Known as SpiritHawk2005 back then) Since he is retired and home all day, it is a good choice as a beta tester. I would love to get in, but all I could give to the community is 2 days a week since my real life job demands some time as well. Althought I might be tempted to take 2 weeks vacation to do some beta testing for THERE. (hint, hint)

      • #178 by Jonathan on 2011.10.04 - 12:50 pm

‘Conundrum’ what a word! Reminds me of Countdown on TV here!

    Looking good

    • #180 by Jinxed_Karma on 2011.10.01 - 5:36 pm

I hope it didn’t sound like I was saying Ray wasn’t an excellent choice. I think there were great choices made all around, Ray included. Judging from Michael’s posts, it looks like these GP’s are really taking this business of making the world as good as it can be seriously. It’s great to see!

      • #181 by Michael Wilson on 2011.10.01 - 7:22 pm

Yes, I am to say I’m amazed at the quality of work they’re putting in. I think SamSyn would agree that without them, we’d be in all kinds of hurt when we finally do open.

Our old QA lead (she knows who she is) would be proud 🙂

      Speak for yourself..

      • #186 by Laura Smith on 2011.09.30 - 7:28 pm

I think their speaking for a great number of people. I for one am sick of the waiting. It went from the ending of june for the relaunch, then maybe july, then maybe august, now its the ending of September, and it seems to me we wont be playing in the 3D world till January!

      • #187 by Michael Wilson on 2011.09.30 - 7:45 pm

        You are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT.

Check back in in January, and we should be open then. Don’t visit There.com. Don’t visit this blog.

        Problem solved.

By the way, I have some friend in the Harvard Class of 2011 too. What’s your major? I’m sure you know them.

Oh, by the way, if you’re in Harvard, why are you posting from Hicksville, NY. I thought Harvard was like…in a different state?

      • #188 by PcDoc on 2011.10.01 - 5:08 am

        Busted

      • #189 by Andrew Almeida on 2011.10.01 - 6:53 am

Even if it was January before we get to play, guess what? Last January you had no idea you were going to be able to return did you? I hope MW doesn’t slack off his updates about the current situation even if it is just to mention the current bugs being worked on. Do some of you people have a clue as to what progress is? Would you rather they had already let us all in to find the bugs, then be looking for them lagging cause they wasn’t ready for us? With 1k people reporting the same one bug rather than 10 people? Go to there.com and click download at the bottom, you will see it says it’s opening in FALL of 2011. So that means it can be today, or in the end of November. But the point is, it will be. They never said a word about a relaunch at the end of June, July, August, etc. Where did you get that info? They only estimated when thereIM would open. Then they ONLY estimated the earliest the world could open after thereIM was 2 weeks, which was before they knew of what problems would come. They have only recenly said a time frame that looks to be for sure, and it’s still a three month wndow. Patience ppl, patience.

      • #190 by paige on 2011.10.01 - 7:23 am

michael wilson: he’s posting from NY because the Harvard class of 2011 already graduated in spring 2011; therefore, he’d be at home/not at school anymore… yeaaaah.

      • #191 by toufovou on 2011.10.01 - 9:02 am

Doesn’t the name Laura Smith kinda remind u of Henry Galt?

I mean those people at Vonira/YowNow are having a difficult time watching ‘There’ opening again and not being able to open their ‘virtual world’. Maybe that explains their hate comments.

If anybody wants to understand unprofessional they are at Vonira, they should take a look at this link:

        http://marketbrief.com/vonira-technologies-inc/d/form-d/2011/9/15/9024935

I wonder who would be crazy enough to invest $5.000.000 in a company that earns nothing!!!

      • #192 by Wendy Stoll (Wendy50s) on 2011.10.02 - 10:38 am

Actually, I would hope Harvard graduates would know in which contexts to use “their,” “there,” and “they’re.” the last of which is what Laura needed in her first sentence. And of course “its” and “it’s,” but I try not to be too picky.

      • #193 by Kayleigh Lace on 2011.10.03 - 3:45 am

I find it funny that people are to the point of complaining while asking when the relaunch will be, or complaining they aren’t a GP. Like you and your team are siting around in your large dark room, sitting in oversized chairs, laughing “mo ha ha ha” adding to the clock.

Come on people, do you really think they are dragging their feet for the fun of it? I don’t think losing money every day that it takes to get the world open sounds like a great time to me. These guys are busting their butts for us. Michael Wilson never made money off There, yet he is again dumping more in, to give the world that he loves as much as we do, another chance.

You know he can’t give us a date, because the second they can’t make that date, all our complainers are going to have their head explode. No one wants too clean all that up. So lets leave it with, “As soon as they can.” Come on people, look how close we are, be happy you aren’t having to sit around anymore with the thought, There is never coming back.

    • #204 by Philip Thereian Key on 2011.09.30 - 2:39 am

Also wanted to thank not just your team working their butt off building the client, but all the 3DGPs that are taking the time rio post videos and pics a well a updates on what they atre seeing. BIG thanks to Francis, Babs, Orielle and Okalnix for keeping our FB groups updated. That alone should be proof to all how close we are.

Ahh just saw I posted earlier with my World Press account, just wish they allowed underscores so I can really be Dad_a_Monk and not have my avie name crammed together. lol

Anyway, don’t let the few that even complain about you guys updating us with what you are seeing. There are far more that love the updates, seeing the world build back…

      You are exactly correct!

My comment on this was “I’d make this a location in a video game”.

It was actually pretty wet that day. If I’d waited till later it would have been much…spookier 🙂

      • #211 by jimony on 2011.09.29 - 8:03 pm

Isn’t there already a place in There that is close to this? Maybe if you decide on having “ghosts” in There they could spawn here?

      • #212 by dadamonk on 2011.09.29 - 9:38 pm

Right on jimony, much rather have ghosts running around than cats.

      • #213 by Babs There on 2011.09.30 - 6:29 am

I’ll take a stab and say that the dx9 test buildings you picked out are a pretty close representation to a Gothic style cemetery, so not sure if that is coincidence or not. 😀 A couple of those really could pass for a mausoleum quite easily. ‘tu Plus the “shine” that dx9 gives them really makes the stonework look wet too, so given a rainy day or thunderstorm setting on those and the effect would be complete!

I spent most of my life living in New Orleans. The photo does resemble the cemetaries there. One of my Grandma’s lived across the street from the St. Louis Cemetary #2.

I’d be interested in such a project. Graveyards are part of Life’s adventures.

Thanks for the updates, pics and videos GP’s!

Yes, there was a place very similar in There, it was set up by a guy named gRIEVOUSaNGEL, on Tyr. It also had an eerie tower and dungeon with all the torture devices. gRIEVOUSaNGEL is a very strange fellow. It will be back.

I did a couple of ‘visa runs’ to Penang while I was teaching english as a second language in Thailand. The island was beautiful but HOT HOT HOT and HUMID! Coming across from the mainland on a ferry was like traveling through pea soup.

Would love to have this spot included in our There world. Along with a few spirit houses, yes?

I see that others already located the cemetery based on the inscription of the grave in the center of the photo. More interesting for me to see was the grave of Scrooge McDuck over on the left of the photo (with the $).

Will wait as long as it takes!

Hey MW, ever thought of a Tbuck pre-order incentive? I just read Wizard’s comment and thought it would be a good idea. Say if you buy T-Bucks in preparation for the reopening of There.Com you get a discount or more for your buck? Of course, you could also do a disclaimer to state you still have to pay the monthly fee and there’s no refunds on the Tbucks for any fools that do this without reading the print :))))

I miss my film 35mm film cameras..tho the newer digital technology is getting better. But the lenses are the the thing I miss most. Why didn’t someone by now design an insert to fit inside a 35mm body to convert to digital?

      • #225 by Kirmeo Wingwalker on 2011.09.30 - 9:53 am

Film cameras were little more than fancy light-proof boxes. Digital cameras have a lot more hardware inside. Getting all of it to fit in the same general shape is quite a feat of packaging.

“we couldn’t handle the deluge of emails of all of you reporting the same problem.”

    Two words: issue tracker

Not that I think you should spend the time setting up an issue tracker at this point, but I think it’ll be beneficial after release when there would inevitably be multiple reports of the same problems. I would suggest Bugzilla.

    • #244 by David H on 2011.09.29 - 7:11 pm

That is actually a really good idea, then people can track bugs so they are not reporting the same thing +1 for this.

As most of you know I was selected to be a GP3D! This past week has been an experience I won’t soon forget. Special Thanks to Orielle and BABS for the paitence they have shown. Just wondering, how big was the last “slug” and how big will the next one be? I’m sure some people here are interested in the facts 😛
It’s cool if you can’t answer though SIR! (Told you that I would address you as ‘Sir’)

  96. #253 by Cellophane Thereian on 2011.09.29 - 8:24 am

I’ve stood very near that headstone. I had a fever at that time. 🙂 I thought a more interesting headstone sat to the near northeast just out of sight of that stone… ‘wink

    • #254 by Michael Wilson on 2011.09.29 - 9:53 am

You mean this one or this one?

      • #255 by Elizabeth Robinson on 2011.10.01 - 9:53 am

I will say this: As a human individual who loves those places we choose to bury our bones, I find myself ever having to take a mighty pee when exploring. I love stones that are damaged whether broken or simply eroded due to time and the elements when bunched up against surrounding buffers. There is a naval boneyard on Bermuda that has a similar set of circumstances that this above presented me. I was able to cop a squat quite comfortably… (I’m thinking that my certainty that I can come off eloquent in this display of TMI is going to fail miserably. But I will say I’ve peed in places very few women have peed…)

Cellophane, aka Mrs. Robinson aka not a Harvard Grad

      • #256 by Elizabeth Robinson on 2011.10.01 - 10:00 am

And I will also say that while I rarely covet the material I will ever covet the mad wanderings of others that I have yet to experience myself- some of the places you’ve been both aground and up in the air and the contraptions of which you’ve found yourself enclosed in while up in the air are wondrous. I am a young soul, but I feel anyone who understands the importance of being somewhere else but where they mainly are has a good grip on the bigger picture. I will assume you will ‘get’ this. And not for anything I’m consuming Chimay and thus going way over my limit of revealing my own mysteries…)

      • #257 by Kayleigh Lace on 2011.10.01 - 10:44 pm

There is a church in Bucks County, PA, that has a lovely cemetary where a dear friend of my grandparents is buried. That side of my family came to America during 1945 from Latvia – but my point – there are so very old dates on headstones – and it’s really surreal – and sometimes sobering (the amount of little headstones indicating children) the mortality rate back then. Some of the headstones tell such amazing stories. The pictures are wonderful – I hope you keep them coming as the muse hits. 🙂

      • #258 by jimony on 2011.10.02 - 12:16 am

Does Chimay have small little brown leafs and usually come in little clear baggies?

  97. #259 by qweasdzxc979 on 2011.09.29 - 8:17 am

I went to there.com and used all of my golden tickets on prizes. That wasn’t a mistake right? When I log on they will be in my inventory?

    • #260 by ImageMaker on 2011.09.29 - 12:39 pm

They should be — but you can check your transaction history to verify the prizes were in fact transferred to your inventory.

Speaking of which, I appear to have one or more golden tickets and I have no idea how to even use them — I must have leveled (probably in either Socializer or Event Host) during the year or so when I only logged in for Flying Low races, because stuff wasn’t loading (not just inventory, all kinds of objects — even some kinds of trees!).

      • #261 by qweasdzxc979 on 2011.10.01 - 11:00 am

I cant see my inventory cause I’m not a gp3d, But I was able to resend all of my golen tickets for leveling,
like expert- event host, renowned buggy driver, all of them.

Before there shut down I already used those tickets, so my concern is if I will have 2 of every event item, Or If that’s consitered abusing the system.

Bruuce, I also want to thank you for getting those servers up and running! We want to play There and can’t do that without the servers, GREAT JOB!!
GP3Ds, keep up the good work and all the great updates!
Most of all I want to Thank Mr. Wilson, thank you for not giving up on There and let us all have another chance.
BIG THANKS TO EVERYONE THAT IS HELPING TO GIVE US OUR HOME BACK!!!!

Thanks For The Update! & Thanks To Everyone Who’s Helped To Make THERE Closer & Closer To Opening! I Bet It’s A Lot Of Work! I’m Patiently Waiting Though 🙂
I Have A Question, When I First Got The Invite To Re-Enter THERE, Not As GP But Just To Re-Enter. I Paid For The Premium Of $9.99 I Think It Was (I Have The Receipt In My PayPal) Will That Apply When The World Opens? Could Have Sworn I Was Already Premium But I Don’t Know. Lol.

  102. #268 by Hugsie on 2011.09.29 - 7:03 am

Good post, I do enjoy reading all the technical details as to why it’s screwy and hearing you or Samsyn whipping it back into shape. Honestly you can’t have a better dev team if you guys had more people in your dev group. Larger dev groups tend to spoil a game/service, like the old saying “too many cooks in the kitchen” while the GP3D’s get to taste your dishes of the few cooks that are there working on it.

Any plans on going opensource with the client? is it possible with your licence agreements you have? (like with flash)

  103. #271 by Joseph P Risley on 2011.09.29 - 6:52 am

So glad we are amost there (pun intended). So….. did I ever mention why I didn’t join Glitch even at beta tester prices? Because There is reopening… did I mention There is reopening?

    Blessings,

    JosephPaul

    • #272 by Michael Wilson on 2011.09.29 - 7:02 am

I LOVE Glitch, and I joined the Beta. Stu Butterfield and Co have built a very nice little game there, and I am always looking there for inspiration.

I think it’s so amusing that some virtual worlds claim they’re going to open with no public beta “Bug Free” when a bunch of Pros at Tiny Speck were in Beta for Months (it was a very smooth Beta, BTW) for a 2-D game. You need testing to work out not only software and infrastructure issues, but game mechanics.

    • #273 by Ethan on 2011.09.30 - 2:13 pm

Oh yeah, I ended up playing that game for a few days. Its great, but after a few days I lost interest. I will maybe play it again in the future, but highly unlikely with there reopening soon.

  109. #281 by MrScrooge on 2011.09.29 - 5:06 am

If you make a statue of me, please make sure it is extremely messed up, my client always forces me to use DX8(I have an intel 82845g(I know, horrible!) LOL. As for the graveyard, my first thought was New Orleans. My mother used to love going to old graveyards. Sort of eerie, perhaps. I have the same desires sometimes but I’m not mobile currently.

I look forward to seeing more progress. I’ll check in from time to time via the library or my Kindle. I’m letting my internet go for awhile, I think I may have a week or so left. GP3Ds, feel free to test the world with some of my toys, I think BABS “borrowed” some of my items. I’ll leave some more in Zephyr later today, ❤ you all, even you Michael.

    • #282 by justagreatguy on 2011.09.29 - 8:02 am

I want to help out MrScrooge, I have a video card its a (NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 Graphics Card) Interface: AGP 8X. 64megs ram
If this will help him and fit in his computer he can have it. Someone email me on where I can ship it to, a middle man or a PO Box is fine. I just want to help out! I will even pay shipping. If you need my email get it from Scrooge.

  112. #287 by Susan Van Brundt Redlin on 2011.09.29 - 4:31 am

    CORRECTION:

It’s the Georgetown Cemetery on Penang Island, Malaysia, formerly Prince of Wales Island. Eliz th McMillan (the grave that’s readable), who died at sea was buried here in 1850.

    Keep the faith,

    Jane Austen

    • #288 by M0NTE on 2011.09.29 - 10:04 am

what correction?….the cemetery is in the city of Georgetown, or George Town, which is the capitol of the state of Penang, which is on Penang Island in Malaysia….

      😉

  113. #289 by Susan Van Brundt Redlin on 2011.09.29 - 4:15 am

So excited that we’re moving closer. I want to go in NOW, but I know beta testing takes time. The original beta was over 2 years long, it’s just been 4 months for the new testing.

About the photo: my magnifying glass shows the tombstones are in English, plus one with a US $. So my guess is Trinity Church in Wall Street, founded in 1697 and the church closest to ground zero.

If I guessed right I’d like a donation made to the Jane Austen Home for Wayward Ladies (located in There, so I’d have to get in immediately to chaperone the naughty girls.

    Keep the faith,

    Jane Austen

    • #290 by ForTehLulz on 2011.09.29 - 5:53 am

Ah! So exciting! I’m biting my nails waiting for THERE to reopen… Yesterday I actually found myself on… bleh… SecondLife again, trying to ease some of the THERE withdrawl but obviously that did nothing and it took me about 5 minutes before I got bored and closed it…
I don’t want to be one of those “SO WHEN’S IT GONNA OPEN” people….

    …So I won’t be!

  118. #297 by YankeeintheSouth on 2011.09.29 - 1:05 am

Really good news! 2 reason’s I cant wait for more GP’s. 1. So tired of hearing the drama, lol. 2. I think most GP’s would agree… being in There has been great BUT the world is nothing without people. Wasn’t it on a Twilight Zone episode in the 80’s a guy was left on earth alone and he lost his mind? Thats how There was feeling, lol. So I’m happy when anyone is added.
As for the picture, the only thing that stands out for me is the “dollar sign” symbol grave. It has something to do with Jesus. My memory is not as good as it once was, lol.Wait.. is it a greek symbol for Jesus? Oh geez, now this is going to drive me nuts all day… thank you, MW! haha

Things are doing great indeed!!! Of course the GP3Ds are doing their best to help out but I would say that we would have to give most of the credit to Samsyn and Bruce for fixing up all the problems the GPs complain about!!! :-D:-D:-D
It’s amazing how they put up with us greedy and always hungry for more GP3Ds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the update! Looking foward more and more as is my wife to the opening. thanks to the current GP”s for all your hard work. Interesting pic as usual, cemetaries are always neat to check out, especially the old old ones where its above ground with like doors and such on them. Now.. to those griping in FACEBOOK and such that the world looks like trash and one in quote from last blog that said him and his residents wouldn’t return till oposite day.. for the record, please stay in Second Life, it was you and your lady who were going from hood to hood bashing events under your other alts in the first place. then as island guides harrassing folks and bragging about it.. so quite frankly we can deal without you :). Whoo got that off my chest. Now.. to those who said world looks like trash in FACEBOOK… then why in the blooming world are you in the groups or even in this blog… Get a life, you want the newest so far advanced graphics that you lag out all over.. find another site, I personally like my home (THERE) the way it is.

Whiners are never happy, but happy folks never whine.

” Now.. to those who said world looks like trash in FACEBOOK”

      Really?

Maybe are they are representatives from your “Our Virtual World is a Forum” site.

      • #350 by Alease on 2011.09.28 - 8:13 pm

        Yes I noted ‘they’ are… ; )

      • #351 by SNIPERBAIT LOVES THERE on 2011.09.28 - 8:21 pm

HAHA Michael Wilson on the “Our Virtual World is a Forum: site… As far as relation to that site, one does mention it in there Fb profile info, but was also an island guide in THERE…go figure, what other site, does the cars actually stay on the ground.. or have cars for that matter, you can build, own a hood, move around on a portazone, or whatever you like almost. Been playing for a long time, and don’t think i have ever had the honor of meeting you in game or talking period. To those who say thats kissing butt.. no ty.. only butt i would kiss would be my wifes :O But seriously, I was in process of buying a house when THERE closed and had been gone for a few weeks and came back and no THERE. You don’t realize what you have till its gone.. and then you wish for all it came back, so thankyou for giving this site another shot. Maybe you can stop by my hood when we get them again for a friendly game of paintball or as my wife says in background, spades lol. Sincerely, a diehard THEREian, Sniperbait

if you don’t fight for what is yours then it will all be taken away.

on your photo, a buddy of mine is trying to figure out where that is located?

      • #353 by IMAKOS on 2011.09.28 - 9:12 pm

@sniperbait from the text on the head stone it looks like Indonesia .. the head stone talks about someone that died at sea in sumatra.

    • #354 by DJRae on 2011.09.29 - 4:46 am

very much agree with you here sniper … didn’t much care for the drama those 2 drudged up under all those avs and really have no idea how they became much less continued being IGs ‘shrug ANYWAYS i get seriously wired for sound every time i read more updates that bring us that much closer to fully opening! thank you Michael Wilson for taking the time to even bother keeping us all posted 🙂

    • #355 by MrScrooge on 2011.09.29 - 5:08 am

From the sound of this post (more GP3D’s and then Beta Testers) it sounds like There.com 2nd Edition might have an October release date!

Which that would have to make sense right, sense it comes back “This Fall”

November’s too cold to be a fall month.

    Stupid November…

    • #359 by That Guy on 2011.09.28 - 7:14 pm

      WOW!

      2nd sense = since*

      Sweet proofreading skillZ.

      • #360 by freecreed on 2011.09.28 - 11:14 pm

October would be a nice month to coincide with the original release date back in October 2003 , though testing might not make that possible .. having played Second City and IMVU , even though Will and Jeffery were involved , I never doubted for one minute that THERE would re-open someday , the experience in There has no match , nothing even close

      • #361 by Lady_Tigrane on 2011.09.29 - 4:39 pm

Here in the Great Lakes region we’re due for a few snowflakes or ice pellets this saturday… and it’ll be Oct 1!!!

      • #362 by Hott_Chickk_513 (Jessica) on 2011.10.03 - 9:00 am

I Agree With freecreed! When THERE Closed, I Went Looking For Several Other Virtual Worlds, I’v Tried Them ALL & None Of Them Come Anywhere CLOSE To As Good As THERE Is! I Tried SL, The Avies Look Stupid & Most Of The People On There Are Odd & After Doing Research About SL & Finding Out About The “Playgroundt” They Used To Have, I Have No Respect For That Place At All. Plus, It’s Quite Disturbing They Have Strippers & Some Get RL Money To Strip On A Virtual Game (Get A Real Job Please & Thanks) Lol! Anyways! I’v Downloaded All Games & Uninstalled Shortly After! I’m Sooo Ready For THERE! 🙂

    • #363 by MrScrooge on 2011.09.29 - 5:11 am

:O Hey, what just a minute! I was born in November. I take offence to your post, sir. I challenge you to a duel!

      🙂

Maybe they should wait till December 25th so you will REALLY be offended?

  154. #365 by mystic1there on 2011.09.28 - 7:13 pm

Thanks for the update Michael! Always glad to hear about progress.

I for one would be heartbroken if the world was reduced in size. The seemingly endless vistas and the lack of hard edges or boundaries to the world were part of the magic of There, imho.

    See you There!
