Wise choices: There and Thumdar

One of the things we’ve decided to fore go with the new There is the hosting of forums. The reason for this is that moderating the forums is a
full-time job (or more!), and is impossible to do well if you happen to be an “interested party”, as we would be. There are all kinds of contradictions
and conundrums, such as “Ok, No hate speech, except if it’s hate speech against Makena for raising prices on Funzones, then moderating it
would be violating our right of Free Speech” (a real example, I’m afraid). It goes the other way, too. If Makena is hosting the forums, and there
is any hint of favoritism (real or imagined) towards a member, or designer, that becomes a problem.

When you consider that we would have to pay people to do this, along with their benefits, etc, etc, and pay someone like me for the occasional “we have to talk to the manager” type deals, you can well imagine it doesn’t fit with There’s new “lean and mean” lifestyle.

But, we know that forums are an important part of any community, for a whole list of reasons.

That’s why we have decided to officially suggest There members use Thumdar’s Virtual World Community site as their forum for There discussion. To that end, Makena Technologies is covering the cost of moving Thumdar.com to what we hope will be a faster server to not only make Thumdar.com faster for everyone, but to make sure an influx of There members doesn’t cause a problem.

There are some nuances to this arrangement worth noting:

. We don’t control what Thumdar does. We generally believe the community and standards of behavior there are representative of the There Community, so we’re not very concerned about what goes on. Like most online communities, Thumdar.com has it’s own standards and rules, which you can read about here:

. We don’t say how the funds will be used. It’s not enough for Thumdar to run off to Mexico and retire, so we’re pretty sure they’ll use it to benefit their community by putting Thumdar.com on faster servers. Depending on how things go, we may contribute more money, so they can do other things. The important thing is, we think this will benefit all members of Thumdar.com, whether or not they are There members. Heck, even banned There members :-).

. We really don’t care what you say there, it’s up to you. If you want to create 43 threads on “Why Michael Wilson is a ButtHead”, go for it. If you want to create 12 threads on “Demand Cats”, go for it. Thumdar wouldn’t allow us to interfere with that, and that’s just how we like it.

When we were setting this up, Thumdar asked us for a list of the old forums from There.com. We don’t have one, which is ok, since I think the first topic should be “How should we organize the There Forums”. We think you guys should work it out. You may even want to create a Forum Advisory Board, if nothing else so you can call it the FAB.

Of course, we will be reading the forums, and will figure out how best we should participate in them. It’s to our advantage to be active as appropriate, but now
it’s our choice as “Citizens of Thumdar” rather than “Welllll, we really don’t want to get involved in this discussion, but it is on our forums…”

Finally, we don’t know what we’re going to do about Club Forums yet. We might abandon them. We might support them on There.com. We might find a way
to move the to Thumdar.com. We don’t know yet.

We hope you’re as excited about this as we are. Over time, you will see the links to the forums change to point to Thumdar.com, so it will all be “automatic”.

And now, a word from Thumdar:

It’s a thrill and an honor to have been selected for the opportunity to work with Makena Technologies and be associated more directly with the brilliant virtual world of There.com. Members of the social 3D virtual world community have learned a lot about what makes a virtual world enjoyable and, with the closing of There back in March 2010, we learned how truly incredible There really is (and how much we missed it). Now that There is reopening, the excitement is palpable and we here at Thumdar.com are eager to get things rolling!

Through the past 7 years Thumdar.com has enjoyed being a part of the There community and have had fun doing so. We have always encouraged members to express themselves, be creative, make friends and contribute and now this is more true than ever. Since we will be supporting There more directly, we continue to promote open dialog and freedom of speech. That being said, we encourage everyone to read the β€œRules” page at the top of the Thumdar.com forums to better understand what is expected.

Clearly this announcement from Michael Wilson indicates his commitment to the There community and that we are that much closer to seeing There opened to the public. How exciting is that?! I personally look forward to seeing you all in There and discussing it in the Thumdar.com forums!
Thumdar

Thanks to everyone, and have fun over there!

I am immensely impressed by the new THERE, and appreciate all that Michael Wilson has done in getting it started again. The tool for getting back all the possessions from former alternate avies works marvelously. The world is so bright and clear and colorful, that it is a joy to play the game. It is so easy to see and to navigate smoothly, unlike other virtual worlds I have visited. I am glad to have this forum to express my appreciation. I am finding the beta-test avies to be very cooperative and in the mood to make everything work smoothly. Some of us have forgotten a lot about how to do things in THERE and are still slow, but we sure appreciate the opportunity to learn again. I, for one, am impressed how the brain snaps back to doing what it did so effortlessly in years past. The brain is a wonderful thing; we should use it once in awhile! πŸ˜‰ I think playing in THERE must be good exercise for the brain, growing neurons as we play. At least I hope so, because it sure is fun exercise! Thank you, Michael Wilson and all the staff for your dedication work.

  15. #15 by James on 2011.10.11 - 11:26 pm

I dont know about There.com but I know websites, and this is bullshit.

I don’t know how Thumdar can justify the donations, including the $50 from you. With a Joomla CMS and a little customisation on the skin. Wow It was really worth the $1500 or so donations!

Oh, I forgot to mention the features hes added, the bloated and unoriginal features, which are offered as extensions to Joomla, wow gets even more exciting.

NOW, you say the website is slow because of the servers, wrong. There a reason its slow. It is not optimised.

So you’ve just sponsored an unoriginal website, with unoriginal features which is just a pile of user contributed scripts on a Joomla environment thrown together to give you “Thumdar”, tbh a blank page with downloads would of been better.

The other guy, whose using the free forum software on a domain had more of a chance of making a decent website.

Now lets get some actual facts here:

Load: 87 resources 2.16MB (non compressed)
Overall performance score 77 (Yahoo Page speed) (Grade C)
    Google Pagespeed 41/100

    Total Weight – 1562.6K (compressed)
    1 HTML/Text 12.7K
6 JavaScript File 284.7K (Could of been combined)
6 Stylesheet File 183.9K (Could of been combined)
21 CSS Image 189.9K (Background images used on the template, which could be combined into fewer images using sprites)
50 Image 887.3K (50 IMAGES? Its the homepage! What the fuck!)
    1 Favicon 3.7K

A simple cache system could of been put in place, depending on what software you’re running, but its not more than a few lines in a configuration. Joomla I imagine has inbuilt caching of pages.

The reasons there are so many CSS/JS files though, is because of the extensions.

Ok, so its good cussing out Thumdar, lets compare it to Facebook.

    Total Weight – 216.6K (compressed)
    1 HTML/Text 10.3K
    3 JavaScript File 114.7K
    3 Stylesheet File 40.7K
    4 CSS Image 47.8K
    2 Image 2.7K
    1 Favicon 0.1K

    OOOOK, thats not fair

    There.com

    Total Weight – 366.4K (compressed)
    1 HTML/Text 8.7K
    4 JavaScript File 47.8K
    3 Stylesheet File 4.5K
    1 IFrame 0.3K
    4 Flash Object 51.4K
    35 CSS Image 123.4K
    9 Image 129.4K
    1 Favicon 0.6K

Just as I was doing a test: “The connection has timed out The server at thumdar.com is taking too long to respond.” trololol

I could keep going on and on about Thumdar, no offense Thumdar, its utter bloated crap, take it from a pro.

So well done Mike, you’ve made a wise choice here. Now, make another.

    • #16 by That Guy on 2011.10.12 - 4:22 am

Hey genius, Thumdar.com didn’t get picked because it is the best made website. It got picked because Thumdar himself is an outstanding and trustworthy human being, most of the members go there already, half the downloads / add ons that make There.com 10x better are on Thumdar.com, and there is a friendly and established community on Thumdar.com. So YES, that was a good decision made by Michael.

      Besides that…

I mean really? How often do you use the forums? Does it matter? WHY ARE YOU COMPLAINING. Now Michael is going to stop what he’s doing with There.com and get on his blog and absolutely demolish your argument.

You’re holding up progress, and you’re also making a fool of yourself on a WordPress blog. People like you make me lose hope in humanity.

    • #17 by toufovou on 2011.10.12 - 4:49 am

ROFL!!! It must really hurt to see that the people you hate most are actually doing so well and now even working together!!!!

    • #18 by Michael Wilson on 2011.10.12 - 4:55 am

So let me see if I have this straight.

You, who are a self-described expert, have decided the best way to address your concerns is to come over here and rant in comments (which you gambled I’d accept and not toss into the great SPAM bin in the sky), instead of going to Thumdar’s site and providing a little constructive input?

Instead of actually contributing by making suggestions as to how to improve performance (which I know Thumdar is aware of, and continues to try and address), your professional contribution is to come here and paste output from YSlow, or whatever commonly available tool you used and stand on your soapbox about why Thumdar is so, in your view, so unsatisfactory?

I think you should perhaps post your contact information here, and perhaps a link to your LinkedIn profile so people will know where to go when they need your kind of reasoned, professional, and mature approach to Website performance and Business. I certainly I know I’d put you’d on my list to call!*

I’ll leave it to the Community here and at Thumdar’s site to explain some of the reasons why we should have chosen Thumdar, since you’ve covered the reasons we shouldn’t.

      * Disclaimer, I didn’t say where on the list or on what list. I have lots of lists.

      • #19 by James on 2011.10.12 - 6:54 am

Okay, a few people thought the comment was for them, let me address you Mike.

Mike, I knew you would accept and respond. That is why I am pro!

I never thought Thumdar was useless, he had a great download area for There.com and provided useful articles of information.

What I disagree on is where $1500 went. Joomla + Extensions? Mike, I know you are not that thick.

        Thumdar, here is my contribution.

    • #20 by There Subonline on 2011.10.12 - 5:31 am

      I been silent and watching for months but i think this one deserves an answer , why is Thumdar a good choice? … Well actually you are right : the server is slow, the site is simple, the scripts are … ( ‘doh i dont even know what i am talking about … );

the reality is : thumdar is a well known “player” and web supporter that helped us ( at least me ) since we started to play even before closure of There, with his downloads and tutorials and patches, he is one of the few that put his face on this blog too when he posts , i dont think I ever seen him offensive but many times propositive and helpful even with “noobs” on his site to figure out what 3D worlds mean and what you can do, he has been putting his time and maybe money for us and to give us a service in the past( dont tell me he is gaining money because if you try to take his time out and pay someone for what he does u will figure out how much money you need to make a service run and give support to it )…

Anyway, money or not, he is one of us since the beginning and he has proved to be a good one … maybe in the future he will proove not to be ( not sure about this !!) and we will just decide to leave him but for now I dont see any trouble. We are a community, we are not webmasters, programmers or whatever …

You say takes 1 minute more to download ? the graphic is not good ? too many scripts ?

HEY MR , WE DONT BOTHER ABOUT THAT !!! WE JUST WANT TO BE BACK IN OUR 3D WORLD TO HAVE FUN LIKE BEFORE IT CLOSED AND TO HAVE A CORNER WHERE TO DISCUSS IF WE GOT PROBS OR IDEAS .. THATS ALL.

Moreover if someone has websites registered or running threads or blogs or newsletter … instead of complaining just contact him and discuss the solutions and possible interactions instead of wing for a few $ spent for a website. I am sure he will need help to keep on working the structure.

At least this is my point of view …

now i will be back in my sleeping mode but not before to send a big kiss to all my friends … cant wait to put my bum over that gin table chair and kick under πŸ˜› ….

I’m not a web designer with a college degree or anything, but I taught myself a bit about it on my own as a teenager, so if he needs any help redesigning his site to be better optimized and faster I’ll offer my help free of charge. As I’m sure many ppl from There will be willing to do. I never knew of Thumdar my 1st go at There, I learned of him since hearing of the reopening but I like the concept of the site and totally agree with the choice made my MW based on what I’ve heard and seen these last 4-5 months.

since the there.com pages seem to be working i was wondering why they are not being used to make anoucements.if nothing else make updates to the status page.in the latest news tab on that page it still says “There was closed on March 9, 2010. Many thanks for your membership”
most of us have been going to “There.com” anyway to see if anything has been updated so why not use it.

Just hold on everyone, we are almost THERE. I know in talking to some that a few are loosing heart, but don’t give up when what you wanted is right at the door. There is many virtual worlds, but none have had the impact in my opinion as THERE.. how many that have crashed got a second chance to come back? Or were truelly wanted back? I am posting this for me and my hubs, (Sniperbait) were discussing this and both are very much happy but it saddens us when we see folks griping and giving up or posting things that really should not be posted from Facebook and other places.. We all really ought to learn patience from this wait.. Life now adays is to fast, to many demands, and to much is expected to happen at the snap of a finger. So instead of griping or finding fault in things, why not be using this time to ralley up friends interest and others we may meet so that when site does go public, it can fill up and grow. I and my husband appreciate the investment that Michael Wilson is making in a product that we all grew to love and do not want to see this as a failure. If all we are doing is griping around every social site.. who is going to want to check it out? Thanks for hearing my thoughts and to my hubs, I swiped your pc again (hugs and kisses). We are almost home!!! but in the mean time i will just enjoy a good book with some sunshine in one of our chairs. xxDragonFlyxx

At least these days ppl have forums and facebook etc to vent there fustrations out its free speech and yes some can damge the grand opening of there but that will soon be water under the bridge .when it opens just watch all them crazy youtube videos going out.pictures filling up facebook thumdars site exploding with new users .
Us old thereians that was there last time round will be the new generation of elders helping the new ones.

Does this mean tech support, customer service, and complaints can be posted on Thumdar’s site, and NOT be ignored by there.com, since they are providing the hardware and bandwidth for the site?

“Of course, we will be reading the forums, and will figure out how best we should participate in them. It’s to our advantage to be active as appropriate, but now
it’s our choice as β€œCitizens of Thumdar” rather than β€œWelllll, we really don’t want to get involved in this discussion, but it is on our forums”

I think he’s saying they will respond as they see fit without an obligation to respond.

      • #56 by HUGSaLOT on 2011.10.11 - 1:11 pm

If the whole reason for there.com going offline was lack of money, but how they THINK they can make money (or break even) bring it online “in the cloud.” How and why can they afford to throw money at thumdar, especially now when it’s not even online yet with paying users?

      • #57 by jimony on 2011.10.13 - 4:40 am

There didn’t close because of “lack of money”; I mean MW and any other financiers of There didn’t go broke. It was closed because There didn’t provide any return on the money spent. Slight, but important difference when your point seems to be that Makena supposedly doesn’t have the finaial resouces to spend on helping Thumdar.

The reason it makes financial sense to give Thumdar a “helping hand” to get his forum up to par is because it is a lot cheaper than providing the forum board themselves and then paying employees to maintain it.

  36. #58 by IMAKOS on 2011.10.09 - 9:20 am

I had a problem getting my PC logged into world because I had switced from dx 8 to dx 9 and my PC just wouldn’t switch it back. I was able to get on with my laptops and did some testing from the laptops.

After the new client was released v18088 I was able to get it loaded on to the PC and used the tweaker to revert back to dx8 and now the PC is back in world.

So I did an all nighter test with my avatar and all went very well. The avatar was left on a BIKE 8 hours later she was still in game where I left her..lol..

I have also been testing on my Pazones, Placing things out saving it and picking It up ( After saving layouts) and from a distance putting it back.. all worked very well.

I was able to place My sky pazone out and that went well. I know you all will be very excited there are somethings that are now in game I hadn’t seen before ( 2008 avie) I love it.

Here is a little Video of the Sky Night club.

This video contains content from SME, UMG and EMI, one or more of whom have blocked it in your country on copyright grounds.

Is this some form of sick, twisted joke?

  38. #65 by Mike Thomas on 2011.10.09 - 7:53 am

This choice is understandable and likely the best and needed decision to be made here. My concern would be the loss of all the good valuable information not lost in the old forums. There was a bunch of great info to be had there and a closed/read only archive of those old forums put back online for people to view would be wonderful if its possible.

  39. #66 by lolababy33 on 2011.10.09 - 7:41 am

Congratulations Thumdar! Thank you for your great contributions to our There community. Your site was always the place to go to enhance our There experience!

I actually think this is a good thing. It will give Makena more time to focus on THERE and not on all the other little issues that come along with a community. Sort of giving the community a voice that is not influenced by the ….heads of state? LOL IDK its too early for me I guess.

  41. #69 by shanghei on 2011.10.09 - 5:55 am

Only 43… ‘shakehead… michael… michael… you underestimate your popularity (or notoriety) in the sector who would use the term “butthead” (or overestimate their maturity level)… probably add a couple of zeros to that number… just remember, if you don’t have at least some people who’s knickers you’ve put in a twist, you aren’t doing something right… keep up the good work… you and your team…. can’t wait to get home !! ‘tu

love the picture M.W. her face tells a story…of her life and the history of her life and her culture. It is truly a fascinating Pic….as always I am not the only person ready to come home to There. While we do get impatient at times. we realize the level or professionalism and commitment that you-and others-are putting into this so we can go home. Kudos to you M.W. and all of the unknown people that are working to make this happen!

  44. #72 by dalriada on 2011.10.09 - 4:45 am

This couldn’t have gone to a better person. A very wise decision it is indeed. The forums on Thumdar have kept us together for such a long time already and this time it might just grow out to be a place to hang more, rather then be a refuge for when things go wrong.
Thumdar deserves all the honour he gets.
Don’t forget there isn’t only a forum, but there’s also a large library and community you can be a part of. A perfect add on for There.com.
    Congrats Thumdar!

I hope you will take the time to answer these few questions MW…

    1. When will or can we start relisting our items again? I am not worried about “submitting” new items until that time comes, but it would be nice to start listing our old stuff again to start getting the economy going again.

    2. If someone that previsously held a deed to a zone, clubhouse, Therehome, and decided to rent it right now, will they have to pay again when the world is open, or if any are available now for rent, and someone rents will we have to pay again?

    4. When will There banker be open again to start buying tbucks?

I know we are ready to start helping you make money now before we pay to play. This may not be much, but it is a start IMHO of course. We are ready to help you further MW if you let us πŸ™‚

is this part of testing the world are all the houses and fun zones gona be taken before we all get a chance to enter the world by GPsss

      • #79 by DavyRocket on 2011.10.09 - 12:09 pm

No, if a house. clubhouse, Funzone was rented before There closed they are all reserved for those that hold the deed. No one else can rent them, but the deed holder.

      • #80 by BaphNagi on 2011.10.09 - 6:16 pm

I seem to recall an early blog post stating that any pazzes dropped during the testing phases would be cleared before the world is opened to the general public.. Also, the funzones would be held for their original owners for a period of a couple months or so, before being opened to others who may wish to rent them.. The blog post that stated this was back during the summer sometime, I think.. I am assuming this still holds true…

        …..BaphNagi is still waiting patiently…..

      • #81 by HUGSaLOT on 2011.10.11 - 1:19 pm

Problem is not everyone is going to come back onto there.com So how long is long enough to wait to let someone else rent a home or a zone? Plus i believe all the homes and funzones are all rented out.

  49. #82 by Camel on 2011.10.08 - 9:58 pm

You’re avoiding the issue of favoritism by officially selecting one of many community forums? Oh, the irony.

    • #83 by YankeeintheSouth on 2011.10.09 - 11:39 am

Make a site connected to There, pay and maintain that site for years and just maybe MW will favorite you, lol. What do you do for the site besides complain?? Oh, the irony…. sorry couldnt resist! haha πŸ˜›

      • #84 by Camel on 2011.10.09 - 12:57 pm

I don’t see how you could possibly interpret my comment as a complaint – I expressed no opinion in favor or or opposed to the decision. I simply pointed out a logical fallacy, which is in no way subjective.

For the record, I’ve done a lot for there. I’ve been a Mentor for the buddy program (that one that started back in 2003), and an Island Guide; I’ve done an enormous amount of research on the There client which made projects like the GPS compass possible, and discovered (and reported) several tbux exploits along the way. I made a developer shops site back in 2004 that scraped the There auctions for data, and presented it in a way that was much more useful than what was then the first iteration of the auctions site – MW himself incorporated many of the features I’d implemented in the official auction site we have today. That project also eventually turned in to the first developer re-listing tool, which was (years) later replaced by JinXplorer.

Ask around; people have heard of me; don’t assume that just because you don’t recognize my name from forums or in-world social gatherings that I’ve contributed nothing. Chances are you benefit from work or research I’ve done every time you log in to There, even if you’re running a totally vanilla client.

      • #85 by Michael Wilson on 2011.10.09 - 8:13 pm

Any changes I incorporated into There’s auctions were based on my experience with another, slightly more well known, auction site. I don’t remember cribbing any features for There auctions from anywhere else.

      • #87 by Camel on 2011.10.10 - 7:55 am

Developer pages – which was a feature that became highly requested after devshops.com opened up. I didn’t mean to imply that you came along and usurped my business model, or anything – it was a welcome change!

I have been keeping my eye on this blog, have been excited about things and the news of there reopening soon, but to be honest, I am loosing that excitement, I did see expectations of it opening this fall but feel like it may be a long time before its open. Having a bit of a downer today about a lot of things, there.com is only one of them. Just trying to express my honest feelings and get them out there…

    • #90 by jimony on 2011.10.09 - 11:28 am

I don’t know how you can’t see what is right there in front of you. Progress is being made quite fast and There will be open soon. This isn’t YowNot we’re talking about here.

      • #91 by spot751 on 2011.10.09 - 1:20 pm

I guess it comes down to each and everyone’s definition of soon, lets have a look at what a dictionary has to say.

        soon
        1.
within a short period after this or that time, event, etc.: We shall know soon after he calls.
        2.
before long; in the near future; at an early date: Let’s leave soon.
        3.
promptly or quickly: He came as soon as he could.
        4.
readily or willingly: I would as soon walk as ride.
        5.
early in a period of time; before the time specified is much advanced: soon at night; soon in the evening.
        6.
Obsolete . immediately; at once; forthwith.

I really cant see There.com opening Soon

      • #92 by jimony on 2011.10.10 - 2:20 am

β€œ1. within a short period after this or that time, event, etc.: We shall know soon after he calls.”
Within a short period after the GP testing is opened to everyone eligible There.com will be open.

β€œ2. before long; in the near future; at an early date: Let’s leave soon.”
Before long, in the near future, There will be open.

β€œ3. promptly or quickly: He came as soon as he could.”
They will open There as soon as they can.

β€œ4. readily or willingly: I would as soon walk as ride.”
They would just as soon tell all of us to go to YowNot as to open it before they know it can handle everyone.

β€œ5. early in a period of time; before the time specified is much advanced: soon at night; soon in the evening.”
Early in this season, meaning before winter is fully upon us, There.com will be open for us all to enjoy.

β€œ6. Obsolete . immediately; at once; forthwith.”
Since us GPs are at once, meaning immediately, able to login and test There.com for bugs, the full opening will be forthwith.

β€œI really cant see There.com opening Soon”
I’m sorry for you that you can’t see it.

      • #93 by spot751 on 2011.10.11 - 5:50 pm

I think you really didn’t take in the part where i said it comes down to each and everyone’s definition of soon… from the first time i heard There.com was opening soon till now…. well lets just say that time frame has not been what i would call SOON.

      • #94 by jimony on 2011.10.12 - 1:04 am

Well, if your definition is different than the dictionary’s why post it?

Went back to the photo numerous times. Glad I wasn’t the only one. Those hard lines deep set into her skin have a story I suspect none of us have experienced. Her eyes, intrigue me. And thank you man for all your time and efforts in the past way before There closed too.

  60. #119 by Superjuice on 2011.10.08 - 4:23 pm

Congrats Thumdar this is great news! Can’t wait to see everyone back in there!

  61. #120 by dakotaman on 2011.10.08 - 4:00 pm

Kudos to There’s choice for forums!! Thumdar’s magnificent site has long been the ‘go to’ site for Therians and is the natural choice to host the forums for There. I, for one, will help him in any way that I can to assure its success.

Secondly, I also would hope that somehow Help Central is reintegrated with There to give members access to the great amount of useful material that is archived there. With the world reopening, it will be imperative that members re-read the TOS and associated ‘rules of the world’ (including anti-griefing and landmark policy) that were so carefully (and sometimes painfully) crafted during There’s first years of existence. Having these guidelines back in place will help members preserve equal access and consideration for everyone. Help Central also contained a multitude of help files designed to assist members i making the most out of our world. I can tell you that I have reflexively pushed the Help Central button several times as a GP3D in search of some bit of info I had forgotten about There. Past members (reclaiming their avatars) have a responsibility to help the new members coming into this world and having this information to point them to for guidance will help There run so much more smoothly.

Finally, in the absence of NH’s (at least in the beginning), There will once again be a ‘paz-centric’ world as far as building. I would hope that There would ‘ease’ this paz rush by reinstating their old TOS and Landmark protections. I certainly know how much work Team Phoenix has put into readying this world for members. As such, dropping Landmark Zones has probably been pretty low on the list of priorities, as it should be. But it would seem that time spent re-dropping zones over There’s designated Landmarks would be time well spent and help guide the re-population of There using pazs. No need to ‘re-invent the wheel’ on this one — the reasoning is as sound as ever.

Thanks, Team Phoenix, for your continued hard work in bringing There back to life. The latest client is working well, with just a few, stubborn kinks to work out. I have no doubt that There will be Population-ready soon!!

outstanding idea. When There opens too all. people, including first time users (noobs) they will need somewhere to go for help. I do have a question. How does affect third party downloads, like compass, sound patches for paint guns and so on. Michael Wilson did mention mention something about third party downloads?

    • #146 by Greenie on 2011.10.09 - 7:25 am

As I understand, Mr. Wilson has established that THERE.com’s position is that no third party add ons will be supported, just as it was prior to March 2010.

In addition, prior to sending in any help requests, uninstall any third party programs and test for the replication of problem/s.

This is a simplified reply, but pertinent.

I cannot remember which post the response is in. I hope this helps.

Great picture!!! And great idea re: Thumdar!

  85. #149 by Basya on 2011.10.08 - 12:55 pm

I’m not certain, but I believe it was through Thumdar.com that I first learned about MW’s blog last April and was able to follow the progress from “maybe….what if..?” to “There’s reopening!”

    • #150 by jimony on 2011.10.08 - 4:07 pm

Thumdar.com was where I learned EVERYTHING since There closed. Even about Vonira. Oh well, nothings perfect.

  86. #151 by jonathan5k2006 on 2011.10.08 - 12:48 pm

Just a quick question, why is the client available for download on the site??

  87. #154 by GaryBob on 2011.10.08 - 12:44 pm

I just hope there will still be some sort of official blog hosted on There.com for announcing progress/updates/news/etc. I’d hate to have to keep digging through a third party forum, filled with random posts about other worlds I don’t even go to, just to get official There news.

  88. #156 by mimi06 on 2011.10.08 - 12:34 pm

The news just keeps getting better and better. Thumdar πŸ™‚ I remember your words the first night I saw you as we became GP3D’s “the people make the community”………. Congrats my friend πŸ™‚ Nice nice update MW πŸ™‚

Great stuff, Michael. Thanks again. Here is your (good idea) suggestion for a thread about the forums: http://thumdar.com/forum/whats-happening-in-there/13633-how-should-we-organize-the-there-forums.html#13633

  90. #159 by Okalnix on 2011.10.08 - 12:27 pm

I think it a good choice to look and suport to one form.
I know a lott other froms are close to be open or just get open.
That is also good but most people wanted to get the info on one site/form.
Afcorse we have still Facebook and the are actief to.
I think its a good choice to invite Thumdar to help and suport the there comuntitie.
Thank you Thumdar to setup forms for the people of There.com.

    Congratz Thumdar

    Ty MW for the update

  91. #160 by McKensy on 2011.10.08 - 12:26 pm

This is a really great move – no other forum/site has been more dedicated to There.com but Thumdar.com. Congrats Thumdar. ‘tu

  92. #161 by mmeodiles on 2011.10.08 - 12:25 pm

This is a wonderful Idea…and of all sites and people: Thumdar is the best choice in my opinion…
I do have a suggestion for club forums…I already have a group in Thumdars area that matches the same name as the group I have in THERE….Can that not work for club forums the same way, by using Thumdar’s site for clubs as well???
    Great news again!!!!!

    • #162 by Greenie on 2011.10.09 - 8:06 am

      Hi mmeodiles, Good question.

Thumdar’s currently has a THERE group forum area ;-D
      http://thumdar.com/forum/therecom-groups.html

We also have Groups which can be associated with your THERE Group/s.
      http://thumdar.com/community/groups.html

Some of us have been linking our THERE Groups to our Thumdar THERE Group and forum and vice versa.

I’m confident that Thumdar and Mr. Wilson will get the connections connected soon!

Thumdar’s has site wide Instant Messaging and Chat Rooms, blogs and galleries, customizeable Profile pages with mp3 players and more.

Members and guests can stay within any specific Virtual World area, like THERE, or freely explore any and all.

‘Tu Greenie…This is important information for us Thereians! Thanks

Congratulations, Thumdar, and congratulations to all Therians that will benefit from the services provided from his site.

I do hope that Help Central will be coming back, or at least be brought back up for reference. There was a lot of useful information in it that would be beneficial for all members. If I remember correctly, it was read only, and hopefully bringing it back online would not be an issue.

    Thanks for the great update

  94. #165 by toufovou on 2011.10.08 - 12:01 pm

Congratulations to Thumdar. It is an honor I am sure and I am sure that it was the best thing to do.

A suggestion for the club forums. An easy and free option would be to change it to something like “Club website” or something. The club owners can simply add a link that will lead to club site, whether that would be a website or forum or blog, facebook group or anything else they choose.

  95. #166 by jamtuner on 2011.10.08 - 11:51 am

This is a great idea and a “natural fit” affiliation that will be mutually beneficial. Thumdar was where I was pointed to immediately upon becoming a member of There.com., and I was very impressed with the hard work and dedication that the site reflected. Thumdar set up as a site to support members of There.com community and has been instrumental in helping to keep us together and informed of virtual world news and developments after There.com closing. We are fortunate that Thumdar remained as a committed and viable clearing house for There.com members , as well as members of other online communities. Now – Let’s have some fun !

this is AWESOME news.Thumdars site as well as Facebook have been the main sites that have held the There community together since the world shut down.Great to see this happening.

  100. #172 by kelayna on 2011.10.08 - 11:33 am

Wonderful!! Thank you for the update!

  101. #173 by Babs There on 2011.10.08 - 11:33 am

I’m sure someone else might ask this as well but.. will There be able to give the old forums to Thumdar’s forums as “archived” and “read only”? I know there’s some pretty awesome information locked away in those old threads.

Also, slightly related but not exactly, how soon can we expect to see the return of Help Central? I can’t remember if it was tied into There Forums directly or not, but that was an awesome tool to have as well!

    Thanks!
