2012 in There

Lots of news today!

First, Congratulations. Even though we only started collecting money on December 10th, we were able to come into within a cat’s whisker (no, this is not a veiled announcement about Cats in There) of being in the black – we were “only” $1300 in the red. We’re all pretty confident that if we’d been billing all month, we’d be in the black if we go by past expenses (none of these numbers are “audited” yet).

Of course this doesn’t count the accumulated debt to get us started up, which is, of course there.

I’ll be reformatting the “Operating Costs” page to reflect 2012, but I wanted to thank everyone for their support.

Second, this week we’re starting the “Great PAZ Pick Up of 2012”. Let’s review what will happen:

  • Sometime around “Dan O’Clock” tomorrow, Wednesday, January 4th, 2012, Dan will pick a sector at random, and pick up all the PAZs in that sector. There will be no advance notice to prevent “Land Grabs” or “Camping”.
  • Every 12 hours or so, he’ll pick another sector at random, and do the same thing.
  • Once we’ve done all the sectors, we’ll be done!

Third, I’ll be working with Mackie to establish a policy for those of you who have forgotten your password, and have an inaccessible email, and either forgot or don’t have secret question. Let’s be clear here: You will be required to present some sort of picture id, and you will be required to pay us, via PayPal, some amount of money for doing the research. Don’t be surprised if that amount is > $10 U.S., and probably more like $25.00.

I know this seems unfair, but it will take real time for us to verify this, and it’s time Mackie could be spending on other support issues.

This should be good reminder to all of you to SET UP A SECRET QUESTION. Thank goodness we already require you to have a verifiable email address this time around :-).

Fourth, we’re working on opening the World to new members. This will mostly involve turning “off” the invitation blockades, and shouldn’t be a big deal.

Fear not, legacy avatar names will still be reserved for quite some time.

Fifth, we’re going to put a stake in the ground here as to reserved rentals. Right now, we’re preventing people (other than the prior owners) from claiming There Houses or FunZones.

The current plan is to release the reserved rentals on February 1st, 2012. That means if you have NOT reclaimed your There House or Zone by that date, it will be released for rental by whoever shows up to rent it.

If you’re a banned member, or a former member who chooses not to pay the subscription fee, the your reserved properties will be released. There is no ability for you to “will” or “give” it to a friend (or, in the former case, the “New Alt which you think we don’t know about”).

Sixth, we’re working in the developer program as we speak, with the first priority being getting old developers the ability to list their existing creations for auction. That will also resolve the “pictures in auctions” issue, which is tied to the whole “Old Oid/New Oid” business.

Finally, we don’t have a date for Real Estate yet. Still working on it.

Whew. Happy New Year!

Gee.. Right now I feel so stupid… 😦 I got my new password! But why couldnt I receive the mails from There before?? I dont remember how many time I have tryed to retrieve my avie through my old e-mail.. But today, on a new computer, it works! Pretty weird… So big excuses to Makena – And Mr. Wilson ….

  2. #2 by Maroan on 2012.01.23 - 4:43 pm

When will you fix the way how old avatars can be retrieved if 1) you have forgotten your password and 2) you have a new mail adress? I find it quite annoying that There sends a new password (if the old one has been reseted) to an old e-mail adress only! There is apparently no way that a password can be sent to a new e-mail!
Having both e-mails adresses (new + old) should be proof enough… But well, apparently There is NOT interrested in my 10$ a month…

    • #3 by Michael Wilson on 2012.01.24 - 8:44 am

      That would be horribly insecure.

If I knew your old email address and avatar name, I could “steal” your avatar and all your possessions by just creating a new email address (or, heck, just using my personal email address), and having the new password sent to me.

      I don’t think that’s what you intended.

      • #4 by Maroan on 2012.01.24 - 9:55 am

Youre right Michael, but how do you plan a better way to retrieve an old avatar if everything else fail? I have retrieved mine yesterday, and gosh Im happy… I just dont understand why I couldnt get mails from There after i resetted my password. Now I have a new computer, and i tryied (just to see if i was lucky this time..) to get a new password to my old e-mail (I reactivated it because of There!) and while I was writing this (sorry) harsch message, I got mail with the new password! I just dont get it…
There was nothing in my spam folder, so I just dont understand WHY it didnt worked at that time. Its still a big mistery to me! πŸ˜€
But now Im able to connect to There (I have paid my 10$!!) and Im only missing my items, I understand it could go 2-3 days before I get them back.
Now I hope There is back to stay!

What’s up with the Login page this morning. Each time I try to login, I get the multiple login failure notice thing, try again later. If I’m a paying subscriber I should be able to get in anytime THERe is open.

    • #6 by ImageMaker on 2012.01.16 - 12:52 pm

You can, providing you use the correct password. The failure you report is probably due to either the Avie name or password being typed wrong (possibly due to Cap Lock key being set — check the Cap Lock status light on your keyboard). After waiting the required time (used to be 15 minutes), try typing your password in Notepad, the copying and pasting it into the password field (that will also let you be sure it isn’t capped where it should be lower case). Hint: Control-V is the universal Windows shortcut to “paste”, even when you don’t get a menu by right-clicking.

      • #7 by ImageMaker on 2012.01.21 - 8:20 pm

Following up on this — apparently, this message (unless it’s already been fixed by Samsyn) means connection to the avman server failed, nothing at all to do with your account or your password. Samsyn said in e-mail he’s going to make this message clearer.

HEY MIS-TERR WILLL-SONNNNNNN!!!!!! (ok, enough of the Dennis The Menace impersonation) πŸ™‚ Is it possible to add the ability to use First Person view while driving/flying vehicles when There gets another update? I just thought it would be a cool feature to have.

    • #9 by Silver on 2012.01.15 - 4:29 pm

Joe_R203, you can do that now with Bedican Compass. Once installed click on black dot on the left; then you will see Debug tab, Flip Camera tab, then 1stp tab..it is fun…

      • #10 by McKensy on 2012.01.16 - 10:41 am

No need for Bedican or any other compass – the user camera (aka flip camera) is natively available in the client using the keyboard shortcut CTRL+SHIFT+U.

      • #11 by Namron Therian on 2012.01.16 - 3:07 pm

        You can also access the Flip camera tab directly using {Shift-Ctrl-U}

      • #12 by Joe_R203 on 2012.01.17 - 11:38 am

Thanks. I currently have the Zakimus Compass but I was looking for a POV that would still show the hood of the car/hoverboat as you drive.

      • #13 by McKensy on 2012.01.18 - 7:17 am

Instead of switching to 1st person view try by means of the user camera to zoom in a little with a few clicks on the “zoom+”.

    • #14 by Latino_Boy1 on 2012.01.16 - 3:34 am

I can’t log on this morning, says world is open, but I can’t log on. it’s 4:34 am pacific time here 😦

So Michael Wilson, I am chatting in Zona, and then poof you summon me to the ocean. You make it so I can’t chat, or move, or IM. I get a email for each, and it says the reason is “Alt of Banned Member”. But, I’m not a banned member, nor have I ever been banned! The only thing I can think of was long long ago, someone gave me access to their account, I’ve forgotten what for. They were banned because of charge backs on their credit card I think, and my account was banned too, I’m guessing because of my IP logged on their account. I emailed tech support, and they unbanned me when I told them what happened. But there is not tech support or contact information when I click on it in There. It just gives me a message that says the page isn’t there.

Also, I don’t mean this the wrong way, but why do you ban peaceful people that promote your business by spending money on it?

  6. #16 by Scrooge on 2012.01.14 - 2:55 pm

I asked this on the Thumdar site but haven’t got any answers yet so anyone feel free to go on there and answer too. How do you move things in your PaZ? I am using a laptop and I can’t figure out how to do it. I knew how to do so on my old desktop but not so much on the laptop. I am trying to move things up and down so I can put a lawn gnome on my donkey’s back.

    • #17 by ImageMaker on 2012.01.15 - 8:21 am

The “nudge” controls are, I think, what you’re looking for. These are the keypad keys (with NumLock off, as I recall); the outer ring (12346789) move the object tiny amounts in the corresponding directions; + and – move it up and down, and 0 and decimal point rotate left and right; 5 returns to center (cancels all nudges). Beyond that, if you look up while taking out an object or moving around before clicking “place here”, it will drop on top of whatever else is there. The keys make your avie sidestep, left and right arrow rotate your avie; these are great for gross placement before using “nudge” to fine tune things.

      • #18 by Ant1977 on 2012.01.16 - 2:47 am

This method only works for units that have a 10 key pad either attached or added to the laptop, just like a standard keyboard. However most laptops require using the function process and the 10-key is merged into your QWERTY board.

      • #19 by ImageMaker on 2012.01.16 - 12:55 pm

Aaaaah. Ant, you’re right — fortunately, most laptops have either a PS/2 keyboard connector, or one or more USB ports, where a cheap ($10 to $20) 102-key keyboard can be attached. If you’re at all like me, you’ll find you can type a lot faster and more accurately on the full size, full travel keys than on even the best laptop keyboard (as a bonus, you don’t tap the touchpad while typing, with annoying results).

  7. #20 by Aerial9 on 2012.01.13 - 6:53 pm

I do not know if this is on your plate/schedule….How can i say this….Zeph has somewhat regained population, sadly so has the billboard and ” paz droppers” consumed the realm…..I am not flaming them, yet they have consumed nearly all of the floor of Zeph, to the point of moving around or just having…fun, is becoming impossible…if in the future you may consider ” Zeph ” or at least the floor ( anything within the change your Av ballons ) as a no drop area..well to say..if you wish to PB….fine….break out your board or buggy ….fine…but no billboards…no paz’s

    • #21 by Juli on 2012.01.14 - 7:45 am

I agree Aerial9. I drop by Zeph just to get some PB action. I have always thought of Zeph like a “wild west” area where “everything” is allowed. If the fun goes for all then that is another story. I still am NOT sure how much moderation will take place in world. Seems like so far if you can do it then it will be done.

  8. #22 by softNdark on 2012.01.13 - 12:13 pm

After becoming a member of There…. you will be ‘Free’ to do and see sooo many things!!!!!!!!!!

It’s Great to be back in There, I had no idea there were so many things I didn’t know! Thanks to all the new friends I have met, that have helped me out!

  9. #23 by Phil on 2012.01.12 - 7:35 am

Will There be Free For All ?

    • #24 by JasonMK on 2012.01.12 - 2:24 pm

Yes, free for all over 18 with a PayPal account to signup for and pay the monthly fee. (unless you have been banned, but even then you were free to sign up and forfeited that freedom by your choices)

      • #25 by Phil on 2012.01.21 - 11:56 am

        really funny

  10. #26 by Wizzle on 2012.01.12 - 6:48 am

Oh I am so looking forward to having a lot in a hood! Or maybe even a house!

  11. #27 by MrScrooge on 2012.01.11 - 11:16 am

I must say that the Great PAZ Pick-up of 2012 left quite a mark on Zephyr. Moans, groans, temper tantrums, and whining can be heard all the way to Dune Valley. I admit, I find it all very amusing. I didn’t get any “hot” real estate. I didn’t want any. I am content with my little spot, “The Sort-of-in-Zephyr PAZ” that is very far from the drama. If you go looking for it you’ll know when you see it. Cecil the donkey is there and so is a deadly cactus.

Play nice, the world is what you make it.

  12. #28 by emimi on 2012.01.11 - 2:34 am

    what if i don’t have a paypall account ?

    • #29 by ImageMaker on 2012.01.11 - 12:41 pm

You’ll have to open one to subscribe to There at this time, and it’ll have to be linked to (at least) a checking account and/or credit card. Depending where you live and how you bank, that may be either very easy or impossible (but almost never in between).

    • #30 by AgapeLove on 2012.01.12 - 12:48 am

If you get or have a paypal account you can pay them from a card that can be bought at various places called “Green Dot/ Money Pak”. We originally got our “There” subscriptions by paying into an existing paypal account using a visa debit card. then we bought this card to put money on our daughters paypal account.

We are going to see if we can use this card in the future to make monthly payments to Paypal so they can pay There. As long as we keep enough on the card hopefully it will work. If it does it will by pass our bank account, as we like to limit the number of people / companys etc who have access to it. I’m not sure how well this card will work for recurring payments , but we plan to look into it.

      • #31 by ImageMaker on 2012.01.13 - 3:17 am

I have a report from someone close to me that Green Dot family debit cards do not play nice with PayPal; I haven’t delved into the details, but based on other behaviors of these cards (they won’t work for “pay at the pump” gasoline purchases, for instance), I suspect that’s because they won’t permit *any* charge that doesn’t have a prior authorization for an exact amount. This is in support of their lack of overdraft fees — they won’t permit any charge that has the potential to cause an overdraft by possibly “floating”, changing amount after initial authorization, or (like a monthly subscription via PayPal) posting without a prior authorization.

Using Money Paks to fund PayPal works fine — but since PayPal won’t permit a subscription unless you have a funding source (their documentation says credit card, but apparently it’s been working with checking accounts and no card), you can’t subscribe to There with a PayPal account that operates only on PayPal balance — and probably can’t attach a Green Dot debit card to PayPal.

I have 11 Buggies and I have them out parked in my garage, for some reason the coke 4 seater slides east and crashes all the other buggies. I have to park it on the east side of the garage so it stops when it hits the wall. Why does this happen and only with the coke 4 seater?

    • #33 by AgapeLove on 2012.01.11 - 4:37 am

If you are talking about the Coke “TUV” rather than the basic Coke buggy I remember that they always did do that . Perhaps it was like they were trying to show their superior horse power or something! I never could leave those out as they always pushed everything else arround!

      • #34 by ImageMaker on 2012.01.11 - 12:44 pm

        Too much caffeine.

BTW, I’m pretty sure we’re still asked not to leave large numbers of vehicles out when not actually in use, in order to control server load — even on a server that has no avatars (and hence can shut down temporarily, saving There a little money), a vehicle still requires the server to constantly update its location/position (which can also affect the number of servers required by reducing performance of an occupied sector enough to require bringing another online to maintain 30 frames per second updating).

Please, put your vehicles away, unless you’re actually using them.

      • #35 by justagreatguy on 2012.01.11 - 4:26 pm

I’ts the basic 4 seater Coke buggy, I will be glad to put them away. I did not know, anything to help out!

    • #36 by fulkenstien on 2012.01.13 - 6:01 am

maybe you need to change it to a diet caffeine free coke buggy

    • #37 by Joe_R203 on 2012.01.15 - 9:41 am

Coupes slide also. I had to buy several parking lot barriers and place them in the garage to keep my vehicles from bumping one another.

  14. #38 by alexandria3178 on 2012.01.10 - 3:16 pm

Ok here is my two bits.. haven’t dropped a message in a while.. but I seriously think that a major priority should be the ability to report griefers.like this GAZ86… Yes I know that I can put him on ignore, but that doesn’t stop him from jumping on my lap while I am sitting there, and dancing withhis ass in my face, or doing the same to others… Can’t quite ignore the visuals, and I see no reason why I should have to suffer this ignonimity because some jerk wants to pay $10 to grief people. Why should I move because of this jerk?

    • #39 by ImageMaker on 2012.01.11 - 12:46 pm

Take screen shots of the offending behavior and send them, along with chat logs if applicable, to feedback@thereinc.com — that’s the only mechanism currently available to report griefing or other TOS violations (don’t forget, There has a current staff of about four or five, one of those half-time).

    • #40 by trouble on 2012.01.13 - 7:58 am

alexandria3178, please let me know what the response from There is. When I reported similar behavior, their advice was to put him on ignore…too bad that didn’t remove the TEAM SIGN from the middle of my seating arrangement, in MY PAZ! ‘worthless advice

      • #41 by Michael Wilson on 2012.01.13 - 8:37 am

I’ve been looking for this individual to have a little “chat” with them.

      • #42 by trouble on 2012.01.14 - 10:59 am

…just for clarity, i was speaking about a completely different individual…my point being, putting someone on ignore does not take away their signs, etc…altho, stick figures *would* be nice…lol

      • #43 by DDGQ on 2012.01.15 - 6:48 am

“I’ve been looking for this individual to have a little β€œchat” with them.”

      • #44 by ImageMaker on 2012.01.15 - 8:22 am

Under “layout options”, “remove foreign objects” should remove books, signs, and locked vehicles that you don’t own.

      • #45 by trouble on 2012.01.15 - 5:56 pm

thanks for trying to help, BUT, that feature does NOT remove (old) “two-team scoreboard” signs! those can be dropped anywhere.

I wanted to say a special thank you to the entirety of Team Phoenix. Today I had a blast in There.com. Previously I have been so busy testing and fiddling with inventory (which is still not sorted out) but today I took the opportunity to do a bunch of hoverboat lapping in two different zones and I had a wonderful time. I have not been feeling all that well recently and it was a blast to see those lap times recorded for all to see. Also nice to see the zones could be set to hoverboat only and that other vehicles could not be used! I was mucho impressed and had an absolutely fantastic time! No one ever knows what the future holds (aside from maybe Kreskin) but it was wonderful to be in There today.

  17. #50 by Junriah on 2012.01.08 - 12:32 pm

I quit there.com last time due to the horror stories regarding how users were treated. Hopefully the economy and communication with devs/users will be better this time otherwise it will be a perm shutdown for sure. Looking at the alternatives for virtual worlds and mmorpgs and what there.com offered nothing compares from what I know.

I have a question if you have a account with a credit card if their is no money left on that card and your monthly transcription comes in to pay off 10$ what would happen if you didn’t have money on the card would your account just be not able to log in or what?

    • #57 by Dan Samuel on 2012.01.08 - 9:48 am

If the payment moment comes around and paypal is unable to draw the funds from the primary or backup funding source, they will send us a ‘payment failed’ notification and basically your subscription will be ‘paused’ until the payment is made. (i.e. you won’t be able to login, but your avatar won’t be destroyed or anything like that). Very similar to a ‘cancel’ but it automatically resumes as soon as payment resumes. I think if you miss two payments, PayPal issues a ‘cancel’ but I am not sure about that.

To be clear, we pretty much ‘never’ delete your avatar. At least not on purpose πŸ™‚

      • #58 by Bella on 2012.01.08 - 3:45 pm

thank you so much for your reply just was making sure.

      • #59 by ImageMaker on 2012.01.09 - 1:43 pm

It’s probably important to be aware that, depending on your PayPal settings, if you have no PayPal balance and no available funds on the credit card that’s your “primary payment method”, PayPal will attempt to draw on other payments methods — possibly including a checking account, if you have one linked for funding purchases. This is bad news for you if it occurs, because if your budget is like mine, it might cause an overdraft — which would not pause your There subscription, but would cost you AT LEAST $30 (most are $35 or more, and it might well cause multiple overdrafts).

  21. #60 by Detested_X on 2012.01.07 - 8:41 pm

Somehow my account got closed for being underage, I’m of age… How can I prove it to you that I’m of age? Drivers license?

    • #61 by HiddenTalent on 2012.01.08 - 3:43 pm

My account also got closed for being underage lol I’m a few months short of being 30 lol. It’s a bad system how they believe anyone who emails in saying someone is underage and close their account without proof.

      • #62 by Michael Wilson on 2012.01.08 - 3:49 pm

First, we don’t “Close” accounts, they’re moderated, and if we get proof you’re not underage, we remove the moderation.

Second, we don’t moderate for age without proof such as a chat log and/or image of someone admitting they’re underage, or admitting they’re a banned avatar.

We’ve already had one case of someone “joking around” claiming to be a banned avatar who had returned (or, so they said). If you do that, the joke will end up being on you, sadly.

    • #63 by Detested_X on 2012.01.09 - 3:18 am

Okay it got “moderated” and I’ve never admitted to being under age, I can prove my age via California Drivers License.

There is alot of people that have rejoined only to grief and try to scam people out of tbucks. I’d imagine people are gonna try to grief this. Specially with how easy it would be doctor a image or a log. If you stockpile logs I really recommend putting the extra effort into confirming some of these.

Someone asked me how old i was i said im over 26 years old so not sure i guess they edited the chatlog.

    • #66 by HiddenTalent on 2012.01.11 - 6:51 pm

Why are accounts even moderated for age verification when you not even checking if its true or false report until there opens. I think that is messed up i am well over 18. and never said ever that i am younger than 18 anyway to see the chatlog or screenshot that someone sent in as it has to be fake.

are nieghborhoods returning? If the answer is yes, Then how soon..if known

    • #70 by ImageMaker on 2012.01.07 - 12:54 pm

According to prior posts, the answer *is* yes, but there’s no fixed time schedule yet; it appears that neighborhoods will be upgraded after the developer system is resurrected and converted to a peer review submission system — which, after the Great Paz Pick-Up, is the next item on the menu for There staff. Meantime, one of the login screen messages warns against buying, selling, trading, or giving actual neighborhood objects (just the complete ‘hoods; trading in “lots” is apparently okay, though they’re obviously not usable until ‘hoods are back in world), because those will yet be re-recreated, configured to the last owner before closing, before they can be put back in world.

  25. #72 by Soosi on 2012.01.04 - 5:55 pm

I’ve had emails from eight members of my group who’ve been trying to get into world all day to see if any of their PAZs have been picked up so they can put down new ones but they keep getting “the world is full” messages.

    • #73 by Dan Samuel on 2012.01.06 - 6:23 pm

The login limit is ALWAYS on, but set to a high enough value that it is never hit…. in theory. In fact, at the time in question we had ‘assymetric usage’ where a large number of avatars were concentrated on a single avman, so that avman was ‘full’ while the others were not.

Since then, we’ve bumped it up another notch.

  26. #74 by Jonathan on 2012.01.04 - 5:48 pm

Is the login-limit back just whilst the “Great PAZ Pick Up of 2012β€³ is taking place?

I was just curious if there will be a trial period for new therians MW? Iv been trying to convince my sister and mom to join but they havent seemed too interested until now and dont want to pay unless they like it. Is it possible to maybe have like a 3 day trial if there isnt a trial period in place for new comers? I think that will stop ppl from just using fee accounts but keep brining ppl into the game. πŸ™‚ Ovcoarse us legacy therians are more worried about getting everything back in place for us first so no rush. Thanks everyone that works for there.com for there hard work and dedication. We love you guys and your amazing online world πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ Happy new year everyone and may this year be better than the last! Sincerely xXxLilAngelxXx

    • #77 by NathanAvis on 2012.01.05 - 7:11 am

That just creates more bulk in the storage and bandwidth without any money potentially going back in.
Besides it’s been discussed already that there won’t be a trial period for the foreseeable future or at least until There is breaking even/making profit. And don’t forget there’s $200,000+ to make back! Then the millions in deficit from the previous There….

I think it’s best there aren’t trials tbh. We have a lot of dishonest people out there and the introduction of trials would create a “you let these people in for free let me in for free too” retard apocalypse.

      • #78 by Michael Wilson on 2012.01.05 - 8:51 am

        “retard apocalypse”

This may be incredibly politically incorrect, but I think that’s the operative phrase for the 2012 elections at this point (given the current field of candidates) (and thats WITHOUT Bachman and Palin) (though a Palin-Bachman ticket would probably provide epic stimulus for the late-night TV and advertising industry).

      • #79 by NathanAvis on 2012.01.05 - 10:41 am

Freakin’ LOL! My daughter and I have pulled out the pejorative ‘ ‘tard’ for the Republican field (we include Palin and The Legislative Branch Should Utilize Its Power to Change Social Policy Bachman) – as in ‘look what this ‘tard is saying now!’…

When they debate we refer to the panel as the ‘tardmac as in look who’s on the ‘tradmac getting ready to take off!’ πŸ˜€

I have to do it again: LOL πŸ˜€

        > That just creates more bulk in the storage and bandwidth without any money potentially going back in.

Wrong. This kind of thinking is short-sighted and stupid. You, Nathan, are short-sighted and stupid. Please stop kissing Michael Wilson’s ass. It’s embarassing to look at.

As, by the way, is requiring the use of Paypal — and then CANCELLING MEMBERS’ ACCESS that they have already paid for (!!!) without any notice or prompting at the moment when recurring billing is cancelled from the Paypal dashboard.

That’s downright fraudulent activity. And the fact that it’s (probably) due to incompetence and laziness and not malice only barely helps to ameliorate that fact.

Michael Wilson, I’m sure you’re a great guy and I wish you best in life. But your deep pockets and shallow imagination have been the worst thing that ever happened to There.

Please, please, please sell the company to someone else. Or open source it, or do SOMETHING. I don’t know what you are hoping to do with There, inc., but you are not gifted as a businessman or an online community manager. Please let someone else take the reigns.

      • #82 by Michael Wilson on 2012.01.07 - 9:06 am

I’m not sure how it’s fraudulent to tell someone clearly, in advance what the outcome of their actions will be, and then do them. We’re very, very, very clear that if you cancel your account through the PayPal system, your account will be cancelled immediatly. I’ve also explained why it’s like this.

We also explained why we’re using PayPal now, again, very clearly. While it’s not a 100% popular decision, people seem to get it and understand why we made the choice.

Maybe one day we’ll expand the system to provide you more ways to “cancel your account”, but it’s not high on my list, trust me.

And for the rest of your comments, well, you’re entitled to your opinon.

You comments would command more respect if you weren’t hiding behind a fake email address “itsthetruth@mailinator.com”.

      • #83 by NathanAvis on 2012.01.07 - 4:40 pm

I think you’ll find while I agree with MW, his subordinate staff and There’s decision a majority of the time there have been times I’ve opposed decisions made, or challenged them. Sometimes in a reasonable fashion, and other times in a passionate, stupid one. Do some homework, please πŸ™‚ if you want a laugh at my expense, please see the recent thread about pickups over @ Thumdar.

Charity…$10.00 is not much for a month’s enjoyment….a pizza cost more and is eaten in a few mins….and the price of a movie…etc….no need for trials….nothing

Perhaps you can let trusted family members have a “free” go with one of your alts if you have any. If you have an extra one on and it is already paid for I see no harm in letting family use them as long as they are old enough. Then you can cancel the subscription after a month, and by then I’m sure that they would be hooked enough to want to make their own account.

      • #89 by Lindums on 2012.01.06 - 1:26 pm

Isn’t letting someone else use your account a T.O.S. violation? Wouldn’t it be easier to just use the Gift Subscription and not risk banning?

      • #90 by Michael Wilson on 2012.01.06 - 1:27 pm

Yes, it IS a TOS violation.

Now that was a silly comment; when the world ends there won’t be any servers for us to go on. What we need is to have Makena move their base to Jupitor and switch from a cloud based server system to a star based one so we can move to There when the world ends. Lovely idea.

Great News, And Happy New Year to Team Phoenix, and Thanks SOO much for all your hard work. I’ve been, more or less, waiting for the Great PAZ Pickup. Just been Moving around, checking out spots to “Live” permanently. What a Great Year 2012 promises to be for Thereians.

  49. #117 by ImageMaker on 2012.01.03 - 12:57 pm

Well, if anyone else wants to put a PAZ at the Center of There when mine gets picked up, they’re certainly welcome to do so; the one that used to be there belonged to BtSt, and I don’t believe he’s returned yet (though I’m still trying to find someone who has his e-mail address other than the there.com one I have). Otherwise, I’ll probably let mine languish in my pocket for a while before I hit that “put back” button — 6000T per month for PAZ time is hard to justify on my budget (yeah, I know, it’s helping There, but honest, how much help is $3.33 per month?).

    • #118 by Hypatia on 2012.01.05 - 9:15 am

BtSt hasn’t returned yet. I have his email address, I’ll ask him πŸ™‚

      • #119 by ImageMaker on 2012.01.05 - 6:19 pm

Excellent, thanks, Hypatia. Could you also ask him if there’s any chance of either starting the GPSD course server back up (presumably with a patch or new version of the client to suit the new server’s address), or selling/passing the GPSD project to someone else who’s still interested and can afford the hosting? The Flying Low races (GPSD head-to-head events run by Alisah, Thoreau, and myself one Saturday a month) flatly won’t work without something like GPSD’s ability to track the exact time an avatar reaches a checkpoint — something quest kits can’t manage, even when they work — and all my programming skills are decades out of date (get twenty years behind in programming, you may as well have never known any).

      • #120 by Basya on 2012.01.05 - 10:57 pm

Oh, I do hope BtSt will return — have been wondering what is to become of the GPSD races! If nothing else, perhaps Tablatronics could take it over — did ask him once not too long ago about that and he gave me the impression that was a possibility! The Flying Low races were one of the things I really missed when There closed!

      • #121 by Hypatia on 2012.01.06 - 8:24 am

Yeah I asked him about that πŸ˜› I’ll let you all know when I hear back from him.

      • #122 by Hypatia on 2012.01.07 - 4:08 am

I got word from BtSt, he is trying to reclaim his avatar. He says: if it is not too much effort and everything is still compatible then I could get the old track site up and running again.

      • #123 by ImageMaker on 2012.01.07 - 1:01 pm

Hurrah! The only things that have changed, as far as I’m aware, are There’s server addresses (which are dynamic, now, due to being in the “cloud”), and presumably the address of his own database server, if it wasn’t on a server he still “owns”. I can confirm from personal experience that GPSD still works with a local track (file name gpsd.xml located in the Resources/compass folder within There client’s folder), though one does (of course) get an error message from the server lookup attempt when loading a track. That strongly suggests that all he might have to “fix” is anything on his server side that refers to There’s server addresses — and with an active client in the form of the GPSD application, that probably wasn’t ever needed.

      • #124 by McKensy on 2012.01.07 - 2:18 pm

”’yay – that is some bloody good news, Hypatia πŸ™‚ CCR and GPSD racing was and is my favorite enjoyment so I’m really excited that BtSt will try bring the GPSD back to work. Thank You!

      • #125 by BtSt on 2012.01.09 - 11:20 am

BtSt has entered the world again, Been There, Seen that has never been so appropriate πŸ™‚
        Hi to all!
Please give me some time reverse engineering the required database schema from the source code on my server. I’ve been so stupid to erase that without a backup (in fact my backup network disk died half a year ago 😦 ). We will start with a new fresh (=empty) database!
Would love to restore my GPS related PAZ on X=0, Y=0 !

      • #126 by ImageMaker on 2012.01.09 - 3:24 pm

E-mail me any time, BtSt, or leave a book/scroll/etc. outside my house at Eagle’s Bluff 006, whenever you want the Center location back. I’ve put my fountain back there for now, but will yield the spot at any time for you. Good luck with the reverse engineering. πŸ™‚

      • #127 by ImageMaker on 2012.01.13 - 3:22 am

Okay, I’ve picked up my PAZ that was at the Center — you may build yours at any time, BtSt. BTW, if you kept your userdata folder or the saved layouts inside it, you can copy those layouts back to the proper folder and they’ll work (so you won’t have to rebuild the PAZ from the ground up). If not, that was a pretty simple layout, as I recall… πŸ˜‰

      • #128 by BtSt on 2012.01.22 - 10:49 am

The GPSD is working again as far as I can see.
If someone wants to be able to publish tracks, just send a mail with your exact avatar name to btst.there[at]gmail.com and I’ll give you enough rights.

What a great way to start the year! Can’t wait to finally settle down! Been a blast building and exploring all over again. Quick question? Will we still have access to the WW? I go there often and chat with my buddy the “instuctor” rofl, and at times meet up with some that are “newbs”. Some old some new. I was amazed to meet one that hadn’t been in THERE for years and years, and also had NO clue it had reopened to legacy avies. She discovered it thru her FB channels.
