When There was created, the company spent a certain amount (actually, a large amount) (even larger than the cost of the massively expensive 3D Studio Max and Maya Software :-)) developing art for the world.

Some of the art was just scenery, some was to set ambiance, some was for partners, and some was to set the stage for activities. And some of it is a mystery, lost in the depths of There’s history.

Since I’ve been with There since 2001, I can confidently say that none of the art was invested in to be covered up, or completely obscured – that would have been a waste of valuable artist’s time. That’s what terrain and trees are for.

Since There re-opened, we’ve visited Zephyr many times, and discovered that There’s investment in that space (which is really an investment for you) has been obscured by other … art. While we appreciate the fact that other folk are uh, competing, to decorate it, the result has been that people can’t use it. At times it’s just too full of objects to perform well, have fun, or move 3 feet without falling into some sort of trap.

We had hoped over time this would resolve itself, but it’s pretty clear that that’s not going to happen.

After talking it over with SamSyn, I’ve (yes, “I’ve“, so you can blame me) asked SamSyn to make the “central part” – at least out to the SPAs, and maybe out to the canyon walls – “Sacred” – e.g., a no-drop zone for PAZs.

You will still be able to preserve that “special ambience” of Zephyr by putting stuff outside of the sacred area, or up on the canyon walls.

We know that some folks (especially the ones who’ve tried the hardest to decorate Zephyr) might not like this, but we think it’s the best approach overall for the Community, and those who will come after it. I know that some of you will fear this will remove the “Wild West” feeling of Zephyr, but I’m sure that the snipers who will now be able to lay in wait there will more than make up for it.

This will take place sometime in the next week.

Are you sure this is due to moderation? If so, you’re probably going to have to wait for the moderation to expire (you may or may not want to keep paying your monthly subscription during that time). If you weren’t notified that you’re under moderation, you should e-mail feedback@thereinc.com with your system details (OS version, processor, RAM, video etc. specs, including connection type/speed, and don’t forget your avatar name in the body of the message) and ask them for help.

I’m glad to see that the original artist’s work will be given more respect. One of the first places I tried teleporting to was Zephyr. After 30 seconds I was an inch away from quitting There altogether.

Finally the Issue has been resolved, OK now we can move on to the next important project.. like errecting a huge Statue of ME in the Middle of The Aurora Welcome Center….lol

Fantastic decision and I support it 100%. The only thing missing there were a bunch of stray car parts with weeds growing through them. Zephyr was becoming a demiltarized zone.

  9. #12 by MrScrooge on 2012.03.23 - 8:05 am

Thank you Michael Wilson for giving Zephyr the much needed enema. I can’t wait to check it out and hang in Zephyr again.

I think that’s awesome news. Last night was the first night I was able to get into and move freely around Zephyr since 2004. It’s nice to know I’ll be able to visit again without being stuck in traps or seeing… Well I’m just glad I don’t have to see it anymore, lol.

I was chatting with friends one day and said…..why doesn’t There build another Zephyr for people who like to play there and someone said……there is another zephyr,
does anyone know about it and it’s location?

    • #16 by ImageMaker on 2012.03.26 - 1:54 am

      There’s not another Zephyr.

  13. #17 by Sandy Wager on 2012.03.22 - 11:48 pm

At long last! Woohooo! I have always avoided Zephyr because of the Non-Western builds and gangland atmosphere. It was a place where abusing other people was the norm. These people are entitled to have this but it should be in their own neighbourhood where they can cause as much lag to themselves as they wish. Zephyr is art, a beautiful place, and I am glad I will be able to go there again.
P.S. Is Signature Block a sacred place? Just wondered as someone has dropped a paz right over the top of it.

    Hi everyone,
Just spent 40 mins doing laps around the tower in Zephyr.
Never hit anything except a couple of other buggies. It suddenly became a buggy bash!
Its true, I tell ya!!!! 🙂
The center of Zephyr is finally clear!!
All you guys who have been staying away should come over and enjoy!

What? You mean I’ll be able to fly a boat over Zephyr again without being so lagged I crash into the central tower? I’ll be able to practice flying through the entry arch and tower platform again?

Honestly, I’ve spent very, very little time in Zephyr over the past seven (minus one) years. When I first joined, it was accessible, but pretty common, just like the other two little “villages” north of Dune Valley, and Mirage (and why does Mirage have a no-drive, anyway?); later, it got interesting, then very quickly go so crowded it was impossible to do anything there. I have a better computer now, so I actually can fly or drive through the place — but it’s not fun, and takes forever for all the signs and billboards and traps and so forth to load. BTW, are we ever going to lose the no-longer-paying Club Scion? It’s quite an eyesore from Artandi, doesn’t seem to be a club, and it’s a completely unnecessary no-drive.

    • #24 by GaryBob on 2012.03.23 - 12:56 pm

Couldn’t agree more on removing Club Scion. The big black pit those things sit in is an eyesore throughout the rest of Dune Valley.

    • #25 by User on 2012.04.01 - 2:11 am

Club Scion should be renamed “M. Wilson’s Eternal Embarrassment” and relocated to an island the middle of the ocean. Called Mount Eyesore.

      • #26 by Michael Wilson on 2012.04.01 - 8:41 am

We would, but your mother just paid us $50,000 to make a 1/4 scale model of it to put in your old room in the tenement you grew up in. She said it was more beautiful, functional, and intelligent than any child she ever had.

wow i never thought i’d hear this news! ”’yay!! I’ve avoided Zephyr, ever since that time i got stuck in a bubble trap and had a panic attack, trying to get out… yes, lame, I know..

If you are interested in a suggestion. I think the reason people like making that place their home was two fold. it was paintball enabled and it was a natural hollow, the way the mountains surrounded it. If anyone ever does anymore creative terrain building for there, perhaps they can make an empty mountainous desert in the middle of Kansas or some empty and /or new island and let the good times roll!

  20. #29 by xSnoopy on 2012.03.22 - 3:09 pm

    Just curious MW,

Are we still going to be able to drop 2 team scoreboards speakers, books etc, etc?

    • #30 by ImageMaker on 2012.03.22 - 5:57 pm

Books, probably — you can drop those in (for instance) Phoenix Park, which is a no-drive, no-PAZ zone. Scoreboards and jukeboxes, probably not. I do wonder, however, if a zone can be made “sacred” without making it “no-drive” — an option I’d prefer to see applied to most of the current no-drives (no PAZ in Maidenflight, perfectly sensible; no boats or hoverpacks or buggies, what’s gained by that?). I can’t offhand think of any existing area where I can drive a boat or buggy but can’t drop a PAZ, invisible destination, or quest clue — unless perhaps The Chessboard (but I think there was a PAZ over that last time I was there).

  21. #31 by Dan Samuel on 2012.03.22 - 2:23 pm

Please note that the act of making this change might take place in several stages, during which the size of sacredness might vary somewhat. In particular what I am trying to say is that ‘during construction’ we might well have to bump some pazes which are outside of the final sacred area (and we won’t be able to provide any sort of guarantee that you will be the one to re-claim that space when we’re done)

Also, we will probably have some pazes which have ‘one foot in the sacred area’ and need to be removed even though their overlap is small.

And, of course, it should also be pointed out that it is NOT the intention for the ring of pazes to use any form of drop trick to get game pieces into the sacred area.

Anyway you cut it, the area will support considerably fewer pazes. Hence drama could potentially ensue.

    • #32 by Michael Wilson on 2012.03.22 - 4:29 pm

      Now wait a MINUTE.

On the phone we agreed that everyone in Zephyr would be required to wear the Sacred Pink Clothing of My Little Pony. In fact, you said you could force clothing change when they entered, and enforce them to wear the Sacred Pink Clothing 1 hour after each visit.

      What happened to that?

      • #33 by Dan Samuel on 2012.03.23 - 8:45 am

we ran out of pink, sorry.

      • #34 by The Pink Fedora Fan Club on 2012.03.23 - 10:15 pm

Mr.Wilson, on behalf of The Pink Fedora Fan Club, we’d like to offer you honorary membership to the club. We wear our sacred pink hats wherever we go in world and will continue to spread the word. We have purchased a hat for you and will give it to you the next time we see you. If you need help enforcing the sacred pink clothing rule we’d be more than glad to help.

some of you will fear this will remove the “Wild West” feeling of Zephyr

Last time I went over to Zephyr in the old There.com someone had stuck a giant robot in the middle right in front of the tower, didn’t seem very “western” to me.

    • #39 by Michael Wilson on 2012.03.22 - 12:14 pm

      How quickly you forget…

      • #40 by davesmeg on 2012.03.24 - 9:41 am

Yeah, but those robots were part of the environment.
They weren’t over 30 feet tall and shooting lasers from their eyes.

  28. #43 by Jimuari on 2012.03.22 - 8:43 am

Some of the most lasting memories I jhave of the old There was beautiful places unspoiled by people. When the pazes with billboards and huge towers moved in I thought is was a real shame that this beauty was being destroyed. There looks beautiful natural whereever possible and the sacred areas should be preserved for all to enjoy. Good work. I hope those on the affected pazes understand this is being done to preserve that area for them as well as us all.

  29. #44 by Kirmeo Wingwalker on 2012.03.22 - 8:03 am

Zephyr was my “birthplace”. In about 10 seconds, I was in a trap and didn’t know what was going on. Once the spawn points were moved to safer areas, griefing 10 second old noobs became a thing of the past, thankfully. There’s whole islands worth of empty space to set up communities.

  30. #45 by Hugsie on 2012.03.22 - 7:18 am

Yay!! Clean Zypher! Maybe update some of the vendors while you’re at it.. open some shops for commerce. Rather than being a constant eye-sore.
But!! …can we still paintguns and use vehicles?

  31. #46 by shanghei on 2012.03.22 - 6:55 am

Thank you Michael and SamSyn ! you are never going to be able to make everyone happy (i know, i know… you are shocked at that statement)… and i don’t agree with all of the decisions you make (another shocker.. i know).. but you have to do wot you think is best for our world. keep hangin in there !

  32. #47 by Rose Blossom & Videa on 2012.03.22 - 6:27 am
