Upcoming Changes

Hopefully, today, or tomorrow, we’ll be pushing a new server and client release out which will include:

  • Fixes for all known Developer Submission problems (icons, etc)
  • “Employee” Approval/Rejection ability for submissions.
  • Initial ‘reviewer weighting algorithm’ which adjusts each reviewer’s “weight” based on whether or not the final approver agreed with the final assessment. (currently simple: +1 point if you agreed, -10% of points if you didn’t)
  • Some zone types (Funzones, Hoods, and Hood Lots) now have a ‘soundscape’ control on their configuration page, allowing the zone owner to add an environmental soundscape (from a small number of choices including the coastal seagul soundscape). We did not extend this to portazones or ThereHouses because only a limited number of soundscapes can surround an avatar and those zone types do not allow us sufficient control. If you wish to request additional soundscape choices, send us the x/y/z of a world location where you hear those sounds already (and describe them).
  • Two new choices were added to the zone configuration ‘environment’ settings. The Mushroom forest ‘blue fog’ and the aerolounge ‘green fog’. Please continue to submit suggestions for additional useful values.

If this all works, we’ll be soliciting another batch of DGP (Developer Guines Pigs), and, who knows, maybe we’ll approve a few submissions.

Changes include:

* adds two new environments to zone config (green and blue fogs)
* adds support for soundscapes in FunZones, Hoods, and Hood Lots
* improved subscription-related transaction history entries (text descriptions)
* adds a ton of client startup logging to help debug crash-on-launch
* fixes a crash-on-launch related to sound card enumeration
* suppresses tryIt ‘up-sale’ messages for developer review copies
* enforces pobFlagBanned (rejected submission should not be purchasable)
* new command DeveloperService::recallProduct removes all instances of a pid from world
* new command DeveloperService::completePeerReview finalizes the approval/rejection of dynamic pid
* new command DeveloperService::revokeApproval retroactively rejects an erroneously approved submission (this still needs some work)
* new command DeveloperService:getReviewerWeight & SetReviewerWeight allow manual weight changing
* new submissionId allocator (oid + a billion) and assetId allocator (normal oids)
* properly updates pid PobFlags as appropriate on approval/rejection
* makes unique error codes for all Developer errors (there was a lot of reuse in my new stuff)
* detects custom car parts as proper ePobs
* handles bodyPart and skeleton correctly
* reduced ‘review copy tryIt duration’ from 30 minutes to 15 minutes
* sends email on final approve/reject
* final approval purchases a ‘free copy’ for designer
* obeys ‘is reviewable’ when displaying review page (suppresses review form, but shows existing reviews)
* Fixes the ’10th texture’ bug
* no longer sends 2 copies of the review email if you review your own design
* review page includes “Approve/Reject” buttons if reviewer also has the approver priv bit
* supports new DDS file type (BC4/ATI1) which ‘replaces’ our custom DXA5 format for opacityMaps
* (That fixes buggy windshields)
* autoRepo dob list now includes ownerDoid for easier detection of ‘car lots’
* IPN handler no longer overwrites subscription profileId on IPN2 (only on IPN1 and IPN3)
* IPN Handler detects antique cancel IPNs for previously suspended accounts without sending scary email
* Subscription-related emails improved with more info, and profile id
* Added a new subscription email for IPN4 (failed payment) so people get a heads up when their account is in trouble at PayPal
* Standing against a wall and firing paintgun should no longer make a UI sound heard by everyone (just the shooter)
* Fixes an odd bug in SomAssetLoader (assert in release builds)
* new command ProductService::setProductPobFlags (pid pobFlags, not poid pobFlags)
* changes productlimits API so as to return default values if no row exists in table (fixes auction listing of dynamic submissions, which have no productlimits row)
* Adds a mode to returnIt which allows for a complete refund (no returnPriceGrid diminishment) for productRecall’s use
* fixes a bug with ‘relevance’ that blocked some edprop changes from taking effect
* ABOUT page for a dynamic product includes a link to the product’s review page (showing submission reviews, plus offering the form if the product is still in review phase)
* DPI.XML added explicit fields for all vehicles (painters at least, need to check builders) and props
* reviews page suppresses fields when pid is not in review phase (trial copy, the review form, and some messaging)
* fixes bad help link on profile/member info page
* adds link to ‘how to cancel subscription’ to profile/member info page
* ClaimPossessions checks for banned legacy avoid (and refuses to claim it)
* review.py properly redirects through login for all actions
* improved error messaging in review.py
* DSC.pm asset handler knows how to make the new BC4/ATI1 DDS files
* DSC.pm asset handler now supports normal maps (for bump mapping)
* png file colormaps are now all converted to full DXT5 (with alpha)
* migrateDeveloperProducts script no longer confused by double and single quotes in description
* migrateClaimedLegacyUser script now properly shows # buddies added (in recap that only I see ๐Ÿ™‚
* previewer build (source.bld) now calls out USE_MANIFEST (not sure if that was needed or not)
* previewer/stylemake should probably launch their embedded IE copies
* previewer/stylemaker should show the ToS contents when asking you to agree to them
* reBanEvilUsers script (Details Removed by Me for Security Reasons)

    I am here to simply second the comments by Charlena. She said it better than I can. We need some way for people to “discover” There without already knowing someone on the inside. To accidentally become hooked just like in the olden days when i had no intention of joining but could not resist because of all the welcoming attention upon my birth. Forgive my ignorance…. Do we even have a greeter program now? More to the point… is anyone arriving who needs to be greeted? I pay lots to support the world and the developers as i can, even tho i have little to no time to come in world right now. Therefore have not been around much to know really what’s happening but i know i have not observed avies newly spawning without a sponsor. I have been in enough to wonder…. I could ramble on here about how i have to get hooked before i commit to spending even a dollar these days, simply because SS just don’t go as far as they used to – i won’t belabor that point either to stay positive. Bottom line: if i had not been able to accidentally discover, explore and be greeted with excitement and enthusiasm and adventure as i was way back when, i would not be typing this note now… ya know?

    It’s all good, but there is a huge problem that seems to be getting buried. There are far less members since There re-opened. Developer sales are significantly lower than in the past. If we don’t have a means of infusing new ‘buyers’ into the system, it is doubtful that we will recover the full costs of creating new products. I fear that most developers will just stick what they have already created and spend little effort on new stuff. The auction feature page used to be 10 deep, but now, barely one page is filled. The costs of submissions demand that we can sell enough to make up our costs. I fear that we are stuck

    Has anyone considered a new ‘trial membership’ for say 10-15 days, or a dual level memvership such as VIP and Regular. Perhaps giving the inexperienced at chance at a limited time non-VIP membership (such as 6 months) we can stimulate the economy. A reduced level membership could exclude such features as chat, ability to buy property, or other such limitations.

    Just trying to come up with suggestions for boosting the economy so we can not only maintain, but to grow again….

    It is great to see that the submission process is getting closer to completion and we all thank for the hard work done in that area. Looking forward to being able to submit new models soon.

    Just a note on the “word of mouth” thing lol. First of all the argument or suggestion we were makeing is that advertising is needed to sell a product hence the multimillion dollar industry of advertising. Word of mouth is you talking to a neighbour or friend not a televion station showing something which is “advertising”. Its great that that show or advertising is getting people to notice and to come in and try the game out. We were saying that would happen and you just showed that it does work lol. TV shows are “ADVERTISING”. I am looking forward to someone trying to use rhetoric or doubler speak or threats of There closing to explain this away.

      Thank you! I took that at Sunrise, and it was a very special time. I got super lucky and got a room at the El Tovar on the RIM, so all I had to do was get up and walk outside the room for that view. I still like the night shots the best though!

    That is good news to hear, maybe now more old designers will come back and start designing again. I’m also looking forward to seeing some new designers come on board with some rather new ideas for cloths,in-world stuff like new trees/flowers/houses etc.etc, It’s also good to see some new blood coming on world now in the shape of brand new people and not just older people making alt avatars!!!. It’s also nice to see There.com given mentions on the satelite media programms over here in the UK via INFO TV and SCREEN TV , they are giving our world a postive score against other virtual worlds and seem to have made some avies for showing on their programms, did’nt see the avies names as the screen shots were very quick!!. So to all those saying that Thereinc.com should do some advertising about our wonderful home and spending money on advertising the world, Thereinc.com seems to be getting rather a lot of free mentions on those satelite channels over the last few months and getting new people to come and try our wonderful virtual. May be Thereinc.com are paying these computer games programmes to promote our home world, but I would like to think that word of mouth has triggered the interest of these TV gamers programms into giving Thereinc.com a praise worthy mention!!!.

    How do I express the level of happy? Sound choices!! Only one small little question though. I have a frontierzone. Which they as you know are listed has house deeds. Will I still have sound choices?

    Man! I can’t wait till we can start submitting new stuff. I must have been confusing myself about it earlier. I’m still not sure how we are going to test before submitting. But if the new way does not involve model swapping, I so can’t wait to learn it.

      If you can’t (soundscape in frontierzone), please send us an email (to feedback@thereinc.com) with the zone doid. Frontier/Parcel zones meet our requirements to allow soundscapes but might need a tweak to one of their zone values to enable it. (knocking on wood, that I haven’t lied to you there!). Obviously you should only check that AFTER the release ๐Ÿ™‚

      I am so glad you brought this up sassybeme, because I would also love to have sound choices available on my frontier zone. what island in the ocean doesn’t have a surf sound? Thanks samsyn for looking into this, send you a letter for bananaphone now!
