Some nice folks at the Charles Darwin University asked me to pass this on:

“We are conducting an Internet based psychological study at Charles Darwin University and are seeking male and female participants who are over 18 years of age, are able to read and write in English fluently and who use avatars. The study will examine participants’ identification with their avatars as well as explore why people may use, or not use an avatar of the opposite sex. The study will examine psychosocial functioning in the real world, personality factors as well as sex role identification of the participants’ and their avatars, and will take around 20 minutes to complete. Please go to http://cduhes.asia.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_brQ0uYKeagINqo4 for more details. You are not required to provide any identifying information in order to participate. All information given will be anonymous and protected. Ethics approval has been obtained for the conduct of this study. Thank you.”

If you would like more details of the study you may access it at http://cduhes.asia.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_brQ0uYKeagINqo4.

I think that lots of people are doing the right things, like hosting events, and enjoying the World as to hang out with friends, etc.

For example, unlike the Old There, this There’s Community managed to run the There Games without There’s Help, and it was a great success. The weekly (roughly) CCRs, and other events are other great examples.

(I’ve been trying to post more about these here to draw attention to them).

I think that some people are expecting us to behave like a “new” Game company, where we are constantly introducing new features, new art, etc. We’d love to do that, but we don’t have the money to spend on those things (yet).

Unlike those “new” game companies, There runs solely on the revenue it takes in, and is thus more constrained about what it can spend money on. We’ve been focusing on things which make us more sustainable – like the Developer’s Peer Review System, and (Currently) a “Trial” system, and a way to reward developers for their work with real US $.

While these aren’t as sexy as “new hair”, they’re important towards building a sustainable community – Kind of like paying your utility bills instead of buying an iPhone 5 or the lastest Xbox Game.

So I don’t know if I have the answers you want, other than I think the more you engage with the community to make fun things to do, the more fun things people will have to do.

That brings up an interesting point. I have heard that There.com users and their avatars are closer to themselves in real life where other virtual worlds people use their avatars as characters with personalities which differ from the user. Of course this is not an absolute but more on average.
