Tonight, I was pleasantly shocked to discover that There.com was back online. I was one of the old beta testers (yes, and have a rusty old lifetime membership to show for it) so it made me smile to hear about your restart last year. While I completely understand the need to turn a profit, I am a bit doubtful of things long term, since the graphics are exactly the same as when I joined in 2003, but with a fraction of the population. That said, I’ll start dropping in to see if I can find old friends and make some new ones. GOOD LUCK!

Listen Michael, although I doubt I will get a reply, you really need to consider selling the game, it’s obvious you have no true devotion to the revival or upbringing of the ‘game’ and it’s honestly quite sad, the ‘game has so much potential, honestly though, what is the point in camping the URL and letting the games value rot? You need to either put an investment into this game and bring it back, sell it, or close it, because honestly as of right now- it’s a haven for 40+ with an average number of about 20 people online, with the direction you’re headed the future is grim, you either need to invest into advertisements or SELL IT,or you could always take the ladder and close it rather than giving people false hope. Stop being the most unprofessional CEO in the history of buisness, calling people out because it’s your ‘personal blog’, oh because that excuses you acting out like you’re 14, I’m just being honest with you though- the whole situation of There is quite pathetic, if you put any type of viable effort into the thing- let alone some sort of non-initial (other than the re-creation) this game would be back on its feet in a reasonable amount of time, but so far- it’s only been down hill. It’s nice to drive around in my buggy like the old days but as of right now- I can only guess it won’t last for long, you really need to make some kind-of major decision in the near future, because right now, you’re failing as CEO.

      Non-initial money investment*

    • #6 by Michael Wilson on 2013.03.03 - 3:51 pm

      Let’s see.

There Before: Lost Money Every Day
      There Now: MAKES money

      There Before: Closed
      There Now: Open

Also the fact that you’re hiding behind a fake email and fake site address REALLY lends credibility to your statements.

      Thank you for visiting.

Why is it taking so long for responses to 18+ age verfication emails?

  8. #11 by Kyle on 2012.02.21 - 3:02 am

Dear michael wilson. You have said there are no underage users allowed because you didnt have proper funding to hire “babysitters” for the kids. In previous post ive seen you reply to someone saying that underage people cant have parent verification because they would try to Copy there parents signature and you couldnt realy know if it was there parents or not….. why not have the parents send in a photo copy of there ID And there kids birth certificate to confirm the Childs And The Adults Age + The letter alowing there child into there.com and agree that they are responsible for everything there child dose etc. That way. you dont have to hire staff and you make more revenue from the members 😉

    • #12 by ant1977 on 2012.03.29 - 1:15 am

I believe the reasons this won’t happen in based more an MW’s morals than the revenue he’d receive.

Hi Michael, I am having quite a bit of trouble remembering my password and the email that I had signed up with for my avatar. I have been trying to remember my information for weeks now and it is driving me crazy! I know you have a Q & A about this exact issue on here mentioning that you may be able to provide help for a significant fee due to the research that will go into possibly finding out the information. I have numerous buggies, my developer items, and other items on my account that I would really like to sell, as well as just spend some well-missed time in the There world 🙂 The account that I am trying to restore was a developer account and I have the credit card information which I used to previously buy TBux before There.com closed, if this will help in any way at all. I have tried the ‘Contact Us’ option on There Central, but I keep getting a server error. Information on who I should contact, how I should contact them and how much this ‘Significant Fee’ would possibly be, would be VERY much appreciated. Thank you for your time. I look forward to [Hopefully!] joining back 🙂

    • #14 by ant1977 on 2012.02.04 - 3:02 am

Try sending an e-mail to feedback@thereinc.com, be sure to include the avatar name in which you are inquiring about.

      • #15 by Arbata on 2013.03.20 - 2:03 pm

We actually should keep the underage out of there.com it caused alot of trouble before kids not all have gotten good players banned constantly. There.com should be 18+ and is and should stay that way…

  10. #16 by dakota707 on 2012.01.21 - 4:33 pm

  13. #19 by 73Bobby on 2011.12.17 - 2:03 pm

like I kept my avie n name.
See as how i acted in haste is it possible for there.com to send me a password.
I like your idea of all using pay pal, makes life easier for you n we can get in quicker, id I
get a pass word I will send thru pay pal monies needed.
    Thank you 73Bobby

Thank you very much for your attention. Daniel

  15. #21 by Pandie on 2011.11.26 - 3:04 pm

I wasn’t sure how to contact anyone at There with problems, so please forgive me if it upsets you a bit that I put this here :). I claimed some of my alternative avatars, not aware of the new “Claim Possessions” App that was implemented. I planned on just moving items over to my main avatar manually, but the problem is, I can’t log in with my alternative avatars. Instead of saying “Sorry, the world is ‘full’ at the moment and cannot accept any more logins” (as it does for my main avatar), it says “Sorry, the world is closed right now, please try again later”. It also won’t allow me to log into ThereIM with my alternative avatars that are having this problem. Is it because I waited too long to claim my other avies, some glitch, or what? On a slightly unrelated note, my paintball gun seems to be missing from my inventory. I’m not sure if I gave it away to someone (which is very unlikely since I loved paintballing), if it could be on another one of my avatars, or are you guys doing something with the paintball system? Sorry for bombarding you with so many questions.

If anyone else, other than MW (since this problem/question is mainly directed at him), has any solutions to this, please feel free to chime in 🙂

how would i go about getting a trade marked or famous character into game, if i had permission from the character owners? would i have to get them to send you an email or letter?

    • #23 by 73Bobby on 2011.12.17 - 6:23 am

Could you please send me a password as i dropped everything when there closed, I still have the same avie ’73Bobby”
I agree with you on the pay pal save a lot of hassel.

    Hey Michael,
I’d just like to say that I love you and everything you’ve done haha. I just discovered There was reopened today and I freaked out! Can’t wait to get back online, too bad the server is always full.

  18. #25 by Dani on 2011.11.09 - 4:57 pm

So I have a question, I have been trying to log in for like a week now. I recovered my avatar and everything no problem, but i had to reset the password and for some reason even when I send it to my working e-mail address, I have not received the e-mail with the new password. I have reset it a few times hoping to get the e-mail. I really want to get online but I can’t with out this e-mail…any ideas how to fix this issue?

  19. #26 by Millie Anne Smith on 2011.10.29 - 6:26 am

Im very interested to see There opening again, and rather frustrated that the world is continuously full. On the plus side, my clothing appeared in ThereIM today. I have *never* been able to log in at all; it might be a good idea to work out a fix so that we can all get inworld at least once.

My girlfriend and I met in there.com in may of 07 we now live together thanks to there.com however it seems that as I got my avatar lodged in she cant not get hers on is there restricting more than 1 avatar per I.P. address? and if so how may we get that problem solved for her?

  21. #28 by Tim on 2011.10.22 - 12:33 am

I didnt exactly get all my items back =/.all the paintjobs and rims i had applied on my cars are gone,it wouldnt bother me if it didnt take me so long to save up for them and its not likely ill find them again (considering 1 was even a scion fuse one which i doubt people will keep making)

  24. #31 by Hope on 2011.10.15 - 11:44 am

Will the 18+ rule EVER change? Or will it just be 18+ forever…?

  25. #32 by Fun_2 on 2011.10.01 - 8:02 am

I got the email to create a new avatar, which I did, using correct old username and password.
When I try to start ThereIM, I get this:
HTTP connection to 64.124.93.71 port 52311 failed: connection timed out (for /login/avatarlogin?avdoid=0&avname=Fun_2&password=********&loginoverride=0&noinstantiate=1&clientname=ThereIM&clientversion=im-2.0.9240r00) for authDoid 1, host 64.124.93.71.52311, service “login”, command “avatarlogin”, query “avdoid=0&avname=Fun_2&password=********&loginoverride=0&noinstantiate=1&clientname=ThereIM&clientversion=im-2.0.9240r00”

I can get to ThereCentral, but links don’t work and can’t go in-world.
    I am 52 years old.
Please advise! Can’t wait to get on!
    Thank you,
    Fun_2

I have been trying to log in for a few days now, and I keep getting that the world is full and can’t et anyone else in. I think there should a time limit for everyone so everyone can get a chance to play. The limit should be 6 hours a day.

      • #41 by Joju on 2011.10.12 - 3:25 pm

What? How can you talk down to people like that and just assume there under 18 without any sort of hint. Your the CEO! Jeez… Be professional.

      • #42 by Michael Wilson on 2011.10.12 - 3:29 pm

#1 You don’t know what kind of research I might have done before I said that. We already know that people under 18 are sharing tools for getting in, which will, if they succeed, jeopardize our ability to stay open.

#2 This is my personal blog. You can see me act professional in other venues.

#3 You should try posting with a consistent name. It would give your comments more credibility.

Hi Michael: I was so excited when I found our that There was in the process of being revived! I asked to be invited to re-join, renewed my old Avatar name for loging and updated my password. received the email confirmation and replied via the sent links. I downloaded the There Client, installed it, configured the properties as directed in the instructions. The web pages recognize me, but I can’t enter There, I keep getting ” Asystem error occurred. See details for more information”. The details are the following: HTTP connection to 50.18.46.86 port 52325 failed: connection refused (for /login/avatarlogin?avdoid=0&avname=Otrebla&password=********&loginoverride=0&noinstantiate=1&clientname=ThereIM&clientversion=im-2.0.9240r00) for authDoid 1, host 50.18.46.86.52325, service “login”, command “avatarlogin”, query “avdoid=0&avname=Otrebla&password=********&loginoverride=0&noinstantiate=1&clientname=ThereIM&clientversion=im-2.0.9240r00”

Could someone help me login? The Help links just send me back to the old There pages that indicate its closing in march 2010. Sorry to bother you with this request, just wanted you to know. Maybe other returning users are having the same problem? Thanks! Otrebla.

  38. #49 by Bemnlunknem on 2011.08.12 - 3:48 am

On the 16th day of June, 1703, a boy on the topmost discovered land. On the 17th we came in full view of a great island or continent (for we knew not which) on the south side whereof was a small neck of land jutting out into the sea, and a creek too shallow to hold a ship of above one hundred tons. We cast anchor within a league of this creek, and our Captain sent a dozen of his men well armed in the longboat, with vessels for water if any could be found. I desired his leave to go with them, that I might see the country, and make what discoveries I could. When we came to land we saw no river or spring, nor any sign of inhabitants. Our men therefore wandered on the shore to find out some fresh water near the sea, and I walked alone about a mile on the other side, where I observed the country all barren and rocky. I now began to be weary, and seeing nothing to entertain my curiosity, I returned gently down towards the creek; and the sea being full in my view, I saw our men already got into the boat, and rowing for life to the ship. I was going to halloo after them, although it had been to little purpose, when I observed a huge creature walking after them in the sea, as fast as he could: he waded not much deeper than his knees, and took prodigious strides: but our men had the start of him half a league, and the sea thereabouts being full of sharp-pointed rocks, the monster was not able to overtake the boat. This I was afterwards told, for I dared not stay to see the issue of that adventure; but ran as fast as I could the way I first went, and then climbed up a steep hill, which gave me some prospect of the country. I found it fully cultivated; but that which first surprised me was the length of the grass, which in those grounds that seemed to be kept for hay, was about twenty feet high.
    CHAPTER II
Here I discovered the roguery and ignorance of those who pretend to write anecdotes, or secret history, who send so many kings to their graves with a cup of poison; will repeat the discourse between a prince and chief minister, where no witness was by; unlock the thoughts and cabinets of ambassadors and secretaries of state, and have the perpetual misfortune to be mistaken. Here I discovered the secret causes of many great events that have surprised the world, how a whore can govern the backstairs, the backstairs a council, and the council a senate. A general confessed in my presence, that he got a victory purely by the force of cowardice and ill conduct; and an admiral, that for want of proper intelligence, he beat the enemy to whom he intended to betray the fleet. Three kings protested to me, that in their whole reigns they never did once prefer any person of merit, unless by mistake or treachery of some minister in whom they confided; neither would they do it if they were to live again; and they showed with great strength of reason that the royal throne could not be supported without corruption, because that positive, confident, restive temper, which virtue infused into man, was a perpetual clog to public business.
With this answer the envoy returned to Lilliput, and the monarch of Blefuscu related to me all that had past, offering me at the same time (but under the strictest confidence) his gracious protection, if I would continue in his service; wherein although I believed him sincere, yet I resolved never more to put any confidence in princes or ministers, where I could possibly avoid it; and therefore, with all due acknowledgements for his favorable intentions, I humbly begged to be excused. I told him that since fortune, whether good or evil, had thrown a vessel in my way, I was resolved to venture myself in the ocean, rather than be an occasion of difference between two such mighty monarchs. Neither did I find the Emperor at all displeased; and I discovered by a certain accident, that he was very glad of my resolution, and so were most of his ministers.
As for any further particulars relating to the author, the reader will receive satisfaction from the first pages of the book.

I want to reclaim my old avie and all my things but when I try to resurrect my avie it says the email/password/name don’t match. I am pretty sure I’m using the correct email and password(altho it has been a long long time) and KNOW my name…and yes I am 18..I’m actually 55 🙂 If there is any way you could assist me, I’d appreciate it.

Just a thought… if possible, why don’t you make templates available for clothes or such so people can get excited about designing while they’re waiting for the world to open?

  64. #80 by JosephPaul on 2011.06.15 - 7:31 am

My wife (R/L and I/W) and I are so excited There is opening again. We are more than glad to pay $10.00 each per month for what There offers. I never was able, and am still unable to find another virtual world offering all the opportunities for entertainment There offered (cards, buggies, paintball, voice, etc). There was ahead of it’s time and still is in many ways. Yes, there are “free” worlds out there that offer a little of this or that, but There was the whole ball of wax and worth supporting.

    Blessings,

    • #83 by HighFlier on 2011.06.13 - 6:55 am

Normally you can unless they changed it for some reason. It’ll be interesting to find out. Wouldn’t be fun to have the ((( cloths ))) you designed on the wrong mule would it.

  66. #84 by justin bieber on 2011.06.10 - 6:19 pm

WHY DO U HAVE TO PAY!?!? PEOPLE BUY ALOT OF STUFF ANYWAY OMG IM SO MAD I LOVED THERE AND NOW I DON’T WANNA PAY FOR IT!!! ITS SUPPOSE TO BE A FUN, FREE, VIRTUAL WORLD AND NOW ITS NOT! PEOPLE CAN’T AFFORD TO PAY FOR THIS!!!!!

    • #85 by HighFlier on 2011.06.13 - 6:22 am

Why must you SCREAM!!! and YELL!!! at us in ALL CAPITOL LETTERS? Shame On You!!!!!

The reason your mad is because your under 18 years old. We can get that from all your screaming and yelling your a very immature cry baby. Try to grow up and don’t yell at folks you don’t even know. Ask the question again in a more polite way and you might get some answers. People are not likely to answer threads from children having screaming and yelling temper tantrums. I hope your parents know your posting on public blogs before someone reports you as a minor who is posting online.

      • #86 by mike on 2011.08.02 - 1:38 pm

By the looks of your grammar, you aren’t 18 either…

  67. #87 by 5gyhyrth on 2011.06.09 - 9:23 am

why do u have to pay $10 a month.if u do that soon or later no will will have money and no one will play

    • #88 by HighFlier on 2011.06.13 - 6:39 am

If you will simply just take the time to read the main posts at the top of each page and the main page. They’ve already taken lots of time to answer that question on the other pages where if you would read you’ll get your answers including why people under 18 will no longer be able to play which I presume will be your next question because I suspect your not 18 yet and is why you want it to be free. Also if your a minor you really shouldn’t be posting here as you can get reported.

The Website is available only to individuals who are at least 13 years old. Per the terms they have here. So I hope your at least 13 to be asking these questions your asking.

Hi everyone, I am very excited to hear that There might reopened at the end of June. And I want to say that I appreciate the effort that Michael Wilson is listening to us (Thereians) in how much we love There and how much we missed everything about There. I will back up MW in any of his decision, so he can reopened There. I have already know that eight people will return
to There which are my friends from GreenAngel Space Serenity which I have already layed out plans to rebuild when There reopeneds. AGAIN, MICHAEL WILSON THANK YOU SO MUCH 🙂

      From the Q&A: https://theremichaelwilson.wordpress.com/there-2-q-and-a/

      Q. What if I’ve forgotten my password?
      A. You will be able to use the same “Forgotten Password” method you used with There: You fill out a form, and we email you the URL to change your forgotten password.

      Q. What if my email address was bogus isn’t accessible any more?
      A. Then you can use the secret question and answer to reset your password.

      Q. What if my email address doesn’t work, and I didn’t set a secret question and answer.
      A. Then it’s going to be very hard for us to help you, since it’s going to be hard for you to give us information which someone else acquainted with you could provide. It may be possible to help you, but we’ll charge you a significant fee for the time to do the research, and it’s not clear we’ll be able to help you.

    Dear Mr. Wilson,

Hi, I’m very excited on There.com re-opening. Counting down the days! I just have a quick question for you. I totally understand the 18+ rule and why it would cost too much to have people supervising the minors and all but I’m just wondering, cause my brother, who’s still underaged now but had an account when There.com closed, if I’d be able to have/take over his account if I paid the monthly subscription fee for both his and my account? (with his permission obviously).

    Thanks, Hope you reply!

I am extremely excited to hear that There (in some form) will be back in our lives. I have seen this question posted, but not addressed:

Having had MULTIPLE alt avies does pose a problem for those of us who were premium ( I had 6 for various ventures). So, with that said, is there a way to move inventory from alt avies relatively painlessly? And if not, is there a plan in place, for those of us who had a great deal of inventory, to move those items to our primary avie?

Thank you so much, Michael, for listening and working so hard!
    Sincerely~Ivancka/ChurchofBacon/MsBaconGirl/Geographygirl/1vancka/Brokenhart

  90. #122 by Nicole on 2011.05.15 - 10:33 am

    Hey Michael,

I just thought I’d give my 2 cents. I personally agree with the decision to leave non-adult members out of the new There community. Having members under the age of 18 is more trouble than it’s worth and was part of the reason many older Thereians left the game all together. A big portion of the community changed There to resemble more of a middle school rather than a fun interactive multi-setting environment.

Another topic of interest for me is whether or not (and to what extent) will There change with the updated subscription fee. Will there be graphical updates or any new mechanics introduced? There will be competing with other subscription based games that continuously offer updated content for their player base. After all, online gaming is the thing to do these days. I do not see a high retention when members have to pay $10 a month to stand around in Zona Beach and talk when they could go play Second Life for free and do the same. You have to really market There against these types of games, and when you include a subscription fee, the pool of competition only gets larger.

Furthermore, I am concerned with your evaluation of the past There model. There is a growing number of free to play games emerging all the time. In fact, most of these free to play games follow a similar model through which members purchase currency or items with cash. Since they are having no problem staying afloat, perhaps you are trying to fix something that’s not broken. I personally believe there’s another culprit that is responsible for There’s demise. Poor marketing? Lack of new content? Anyway, this is just some food for thought. Good luck to you and your venture (however you decide on proceeding)! Thanks for reading.

    • #123 by ken25 on 2011.05.15 - 12:06 pm

I think i heard they were working on a new OS for There with updated gfx, how much and waht is updated I dont know. But dont hold me to that.

    • #124 by Jane Meyers on 2011.05.30 - 7:47 am

I agree that There is going to have to compete with Second Life, but here is why I don’t think that will be a big problem:: Much of the decision between playing Second Life and There is based on opinion. Second Life is more of a business game. It can be VERY laggy for most computers as well. Also, Second Life isn’t as player oriented. Michael Wilson has been answering most questions as honestly as he can with the information and knowledge he currently has. When it comes to Second Life, they don’t really care as much about individuals. There are going to be some people that tell you “Second Life is way better”, and there will be people that favor There.com. It all depends on what ones interests are.
I do agree with you that There.com has a lot to compete with though. Second Life has millions of players, but like I said before, it’s all opinion. If somebody just doesn’t like the way that There.com is put together, then you aren’t going to change their minds. 🙂

Michael Wilson could you find a way to make there.com t-shirt or hats for real life to help get the word about there out kind of like world of warcraft did like this http://compare.ebay.com/like/390273597309?ltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar im sure people would love to buy a there.com T or hat to show there pride for the game and it would help there.com in 2 ways from the money from the item and the advertisement from the person waring it. i know i would buy one if you sold them just a that and thank for ur time

  93. #128 by Sameer on 2011.05.09 - 10:07 am

I must ask, how did the original founders of There.com even think of the name “There?” How did they even get the domain name There.com. You would think that someone had already registered it.

  99. #136 by Lianne23 on 2011.05.05 - 9:56 am

Sorry for posting again, but if my avatar is below the age requirement that it should be, does that mean that i cannot return to There even though i have previously payed for a membership?

    • #137 by Michael Wilson on 2011.05.05 - 12:16 pm

Unfortunately, you didn’t pay for membership in the new service, or under the “new” pricing plan (we’re allowed to change prices according to the old TOS, and, well, common sense). And what you paid for was for your avatar to have access to certain features (I assume you’re referring to premium).

In any case, if you’re under 18, you won’t be able to use the service, unfortunately.

  100. #138 by Lianne23 on 2011.05.05 - 9:54 am

    Hi Michael(:
I just feel like this is a rather important question to answer, it may be common sense, but I still would really appreciate an answer. When you say pay-per month, does that mean you have to be on There 2, and then count a month that you are on? or does a membership run throughout the month that you pay. For example, if you purchase a membership on May 5th, does it run until June 6th, or do you have to be online for a timed month?
Also, are we going to have an oppurtunity to change our therenames in the process of renewing our membership?

    Sorry if this is confusing
    Thank you(:,
    Lianne23 (therename)

    • #139 by Summers on 2011.05.06 - 12:07 pm

It would not be a timed month.
Pay per month is paying once a month every month.

  101. #140 by lovepotionNo9 on 2011.05.04 - 11:10 am

mr wilson can you please keep me posted in email about the progress of there.com thanks

  102. #142 by Tohya on 2011.05.04 - 7:15 am

I loved There. After trying out many other virtual worlds that never felt “right” I tried to think about what made There so much better than the others. First, I love the body language and movements of the avatars; keeps things realistic without falling into the “uncanny valley”. Next, I think I miss the low-competition activities and how the community was (mostly) supportive of newbies. I think my next favorite thing was the tiki/tropical scenery, most of all – the There-built original scenery, and how it all kept to a theme.

I would love to join There2, or whatever it will be called. I’m willing to wait if waiting means it will be sustainable.

  103. #143 by acemastter on 2011.05.03 - 6:25 pm

Michael Wilson said it 100 times if he makes it a pg 16 world like it use to be it will cost him more to keep it open bottom line is he save’s a mill by making it a 18+ world so if he makes it a pg 16 world and only 50 kids pay the $10 a month fee hill lost money and there.com will close (maybe for good this time ) or make it a 18+ world and have a better chance of keeping it open Michael Wilson is doing what he can to reopen it for us and thank you for all the hard work Mr. Wilson

  104. #144 by Aislinn on 2011.05.03 - 2:58 pm

Hi Michael, thank you for taking the initiative on the survey, hopefully useful business information will come of it.

As has been noted elsewhere, an initial concern about a potential There2 is the rapidly changing competitive environment. If it’s largely the same technological experience from 7 or 8 years ago (an eternity in tech timelines), it risks appealing to a diminishing demographic. There’s the Catch-22 of insufficient resources to upgrade the technology without a sufficient userbase, and a limited userbase because of other more capable offerings.

Given the stated goal of over-18 subscribers and what may be called There’s high social standards of an online experience (a ‘PG’ environment etc.), however, there may be ways to leverage those attributes. One example may be targeting specific demographics: I can imagine There marketed to seniors who would value There’s benign environment, and who would avoid more risque or youth-focused places like SL (I’ve suggested having some kind of age-group identification in avatars’ nameplates). Maybe in concert with national organizations, There would also find value with individuals with autism, physical disabliilties and so on. Funding from such associations may be an option, especially if benefits to those individuals may accrue from interaction with the relatively safe environment.

I too hope There returns in some form, but I also understand the need for a sound business model to support it. I’m sure there are lots of former Therians out there with great ideas to consider, and maybe by putting our collective minds together, such a model may be found.

  105. #145 by IWasFromThere.com on 2011.05.03 - 8:30 am

If you don’t let people 13+ join theres not a chance you will be making the monthly fees you wanted and kids 13+ would probably pay the monthly fees instead of making the game for everyone thats only 18+ make it so its only for the people who can pay atleast 10$ a month.

    • #146 by Michael Wilson on 2011.05.03 - 9:24 am

      I can’t parse your sentence.

      • #147 by mystic1there on 2011.05.03 - 10:32 am

I’ll take a stab at parsing that, just for fun 🙂

“If you don’t let people 13 and over join, there’s not a chance you will be making the monthly fees you wanted. Kids 13 and over would probably pay the monthly fees. Instead of making the game for everyone ages18 and up, make it so it’s only for the people who can pay at least $10 per month.”

That’s a little better grammatically, at least. 😉

        all the best,
        mystic_1

Having members under 18 means he has to run a live help system in order to “babysit.” Babysitters cost money.

    Dear Micheal Wilson,

Regardless of how it turns to be; There.com was & still the best virtual world experience (I have been through the list from A-Z). If There.com re-opens, I’m sure that I’ll be one of the first to re-join the world. We’ve waiting long enough now for it to re-open. I’ll cut on my other spending to be a Therian AGAIN. To all my friends in There.com, I miss you a lot.

I am so happy at the possibility of once again riding my hoverboard. I am also wondering about the IG, if it will still be there. The survey mentioned that lifetime membership for beta was going to be available. However My questions is this. I joined (paid) as a lifetime member before it was all redused to the $20 membership. I had to pay for voice, explorer pack, and music as well. (I think it was April 2004 when I joined as lifetime member) will those memberships be honored as well?

    • #151 by Michael Wilson on 2011.05.02 - 2:17 pm

Sorry, but no. That gave you the privileges to use premium benefits for the life of the service, but doesn’t cover any new monthly fees.

      • #152 by Alexandria3178 on 2011.05.02 - 2:58 pm

‘sokay If I cannot manage to scrape up $10 per month (I hope that is what it would end up being) then I am in serious financial straights and should not be playing … LOL

when news of there.com’s survey reached my e-mail box, I was Beside myself with excitement and Joy. I have been in several Virutal Worlds and NONE of them could come close to There.com. Being in a Virtual World today and hearing talk about There.Com possible re-openning it became very clear to me that other Virtual Worlds are Very Threatened with the mere talk of this happening ..lol.. to the point some Virtual Worlds are banning anyone talking about it lol. you got em running scared.

I would enjoy having There.com re-openning and would pay to play.. in my Humble Opinion ” Its worth it ”

SO Good Luck on getting it re-openned and I will be There.
Mahalo nui loa kaua ( Thank you very much)

A hui hou ( Until we meet again)
    Aloha !!!!!!

Tell all your There friends about it. A lot of email was filtered as spam or sent back so there are many who haven’t heard about it yet. The more that take this survey the better.

  110. #156 by Tomixcomics on 2011.05.01 - 7:10 pm

Dear Michael, I know people have asked dozens of times if they sign forms and such, would THERE be avalible for people under 18 and you said no. Perosnally I would like to just ask why. Wouldn’t having parental approval sent in, or some sort of form signed and sent in make THERE safe letigiously in the aspect that made the 18 age limit in the firstplace?

    • #157 by Michael Wilson on 2011.05.01 - 7:24 pm

      Good question.

The efforts to which underage folks went to get access to There were amazing. You would be astonished at the documents we got purportedly “from parents” — from the obvious fakes (spelling and handwriting challenged) to true works of art. Since we can’t guarantee your parents wrote that document, we can’t guarantee it’s ok with them you’re there. Sorry.

      • #158 by Tomixcomics on 2011.05.11 - 6:04 am

Oh, I’m not asking for myself, I’m 21. I’m just aksing for the people who would like to play but wont be able to due to the age limit. I know I discovered THERE when I was younger, some of my friends who are younger are interested in trying it, plus -as an event hoster I would hate to see the population of THERE dwindle, considering how many of them were in game.

  112. #160 by Kelayna Hilton on 2011.05.01 - 10:17 am

Took the survey, hoping that there.com will be back. Pay per month membership is a good thing, perhaps making it discounted if done on a yearly basis. I was an Island Guide, a Senior as well and I miss there.com terribly. I was also a member ( and Senior Crew member)of vmtv.com where paying members also got a stipend of currency. Making it 18+ is an awesome idea.

  113. #161 by Phoenix on 2011.05.01 - 8:38 am

As an ex-developer I’d be happy to sign over all rights to my designs over to Makena, to help their market and just to be able to see the designs come to life again. I’m sure many other designers will feel the same if it means that it will help There to re-open.
MW, you have a lot of creative and clever people out there that will help, out of passion and not for financial gain. Therians are a special breed 😉
    Good luck

  114. #162 by Unknown on 2011.04.30 - 8:37 pm

Hmmmm..Yah I feel awful about going off on you like that…I shouldnt have done it I just got to obsessed. And I apologize I was childish and dumb but besides that I’ll just wait my 4 years. Not so long if you dont think about but. 18+ is a good idea. It saves you less stress and money…Thanks for understanding MW and as I said before I apoligize.

  115. #163 by Mrs_edmonkey on 2011.04.30 - 1:11 pm

I answered the survey, but I think you needed to do add more questions. I didn’t have a choice to say I really don’t care the age range because kids will lie to get on. I liked there because most people kept there mouths clean. My kids enjoyed the games in it although we had strict rules not to talk to people that much and computers were where we could watch them. I also really would like it 120.00 a year but i guess I could and probably would go higher if I had to. I didnt feel your survey gave us that choice. Seriously! Most of us want there Back. But economical times also makes it hard to pay much for a game. If you really try to keep the cost affordable I think we will all come back. Thanks for your everts.

  116. #164 by SailorGuy on 2011.04.30 - 12:28 pm

    Hello Michael,

I know that There was your “baby” and that you must have been very sad to see the day it had little choice but to close.

I truly hope you can find a viable and sustainable business model to re-open There2 (or ThereToo or ThereAgain, or whatever you decide to call it).

I’m not sure you remember me but I was an early beta member and attended a lot of the in-world State of There andDeveloper events and asked what I thought were relevant and focused questions about the service and how it operated. My personal opinion is that the main thing lacking was not on the operational or technical side, but on the lack of a comprehensive marketing thrust. I offered a number of suggestions that I still think are valid and would yield positive results, but that can wait for a future time when and if There re-opens. I responded to the survey and am willing to pay to play as I expect many others are.

I wish you well and hope that you are able to resurrect the virtual world that many came to enjoy so much more than you may know.

    Regards,
    SailorGuy

  120. #169 by Seekeroftruth46 on 2011.04.30 - 7:35 am

Hey Michael, I have a serious question that I really am curious about. How about advertising? Like getting There published in Gamepro or Gameinformer? I’m sure there are tons of people that don;t even know that There exists of former players that are currently unaware of the possible reopening. Also some stores, for other virtual worlds sell pre-paid game time cards or cards for in game currency. Like say stores could sell gametime cards for There or cards that give you Therebucks. I’m just curious of the way awareness is being spread aside from the facebook page. 🙂 I mean the more people that know about There the better right?

  121. #170 by Buddleia_Girl on 2011.04.30 - 5:51 am

For everyone begging, pleading and stating facts about why 13-17 year olds should be allowed to play, even on a more limited scale…

I don’t think that he’s looking for ways to make it work, he’s just telling you that he doesn’t want it to. Of course there are ways, there are many games that successfully impliment Parental Control features, and Parent/Child account tethering. What he’s telling us is that he has decided not to do this. Not that he doesn’t know how to.

When you are the one guy who can push the relaunch button – or not – you get to decide.

  122. #171 by Robynn on 2011.04.30 - 2:45 am

My name was Robynn in There.com. I would like to Thank There for Closing because it was a terrible addiction for me much like the Casino is for a gambler. I spent Thousands of Real dollars as others did in There as well. People should be spending their Real dollars on Real stuff ! My sister is Addicted to Second Life and whenever I visit the website , it doesn’t seem any more active or exciting as There was LOL. All that aside though, how can There.com compete against XboxLive or the WII , sorry I thought these other game consoles are maybe what made There.com close in the first place? Also If There.com reopened and a monthly fee was figured out or even a yearly fee, how or what would There.com do for all of us who spent Thousands of Real dollars in the game from before?

  123. #172 by WizardK on 2011.04.30 - 2:38 am

  124. #173 by Jave on 2011.04.30 - 1:01 am

I really miss the spades tables. I’ve looked everywhere and there’s none like them in other virtual worlds (SL has some but they are much more complicated). I didn’t like the way There became so laggy toward the end though–when you tried to get out and see the scenery it took forever for things to load and then you would end up in someone’s weird house that you hadn’t seen initially. I play WOW now but I would realy like to be able to pop into There.com a couple times a week to play a game of spades–it’s nice to not have to grind in order to level your character.

  131. #183 by Angie Ballard on 2011.04.28 - 9:11 pm

Hello fellow Therians! It is very exciting to hear news of a possible re-opening. I can’t believe how excited I was to receive an email asking me to take a survey! First and only survey I ever enjoyed 😀 I hope there are more positive feed backs than there are negative. I’m must say, I’m a little disappointed with some of the posts. There.com is absolutely untouchable. There is NO other virtual world that comes close to There! There, in my opinion, was very open and it was difficult to manage everything, all the time, especially in regards to under age users. I understand completely the need to make it 18+ and I am all for it. I don’t know the exact numbers or the statistics, but I am sure there were tons of paying adults that played, not just paying minors. I knew of more adults than kids in There and find it hard to believe that There wouldn’t do well under a 18+ policy. My husband and I paid loads of money in There and we’re excited that we may have the oppertunity to spend even more money if There opens again. We will gladly pay any monthly fee plus extra for TBucks and other in world enjoyments 😀 And, thank you, Michael Wilson, for never giving up! I knew deep down, There would be another oppertunity for Therians to reunite. I am so excited!

  132. #184 by Kev Richards on 2011.04.28 - 6:45 pm

I clearly recall that I was genuinely saddened when There closed, even though I had only had an account for a few months. I’d certainly be willing to pay a subscription for it’s revival.

Some random thoughts about the good times, the future:

I was very impressed with the 3D world – the vehicles actually worked, the physics was great fun. The world looked good and was a joy to be in.

I liked the potential to build although I remember thinking that it’d be great to have a larger number of free/low cost modular themed building elements just to play with. I’m not seeking to mimic SL by suggesting configurable prims – use a standard wide ranging library you guys provide plus quality controlled player/developer creations as the basic units.

The lack of flying penii [sic] was also welcomed. I was impressed that the environment was controlled and cared for. Although I do wonder whether it’s a wasted opportunity that having created a ‘clean’ 3D environment that many parents would consider letting their children roam in to then limit the experience to 18+ seems like you may be reducing your market.

One of the things that struck me about There was that it could be populated with considerably more things for users to share experience of. I remember that you could play cards, but there are many other possibilities. Besides traditional board games like checkers it might be fun to do more 3D events such as recreating some of the Olympic events for users to compete in, even implementing games like the dance game (3D dance party) from Kaneva would entertaining.

I’d strongly suggest changing the name – as people have pointed out “There” is not a search engine / social networking friendly word.

Please don’t feel the need to add out-of-world social networking. If people want that they’ll use what already exists. I’d suggest continuing innovation within the 3D world rather than replication of existing services.

I could go on and on such is my enthusiasm … I hope that There does get reborn!

  133. #185 by Unknown on 2011.04.28 - 5:47 pm

MW…Do you know anything about the world called Virtual Congress I just heard about it but it looks just like There.com and the avi’s are the same except you have to be a teacher in order to sign up…

  134. #186 by Unknown on 2011.04.28 - 11:49 am

OMGGGGG Why do people keep asking the same questions over and over again. He said that however IF he decides to reopen There. In order to get your inventory your going to have to pay the membership. The other 2 questions I have no idea of.

  135. #187 by A There Avatar on 2011.04.28 - 11:18 am

    Hey Michael…

    Just 3 things..

If it was enough money to open it, when would it open?

If it opened, would we still have our inventory?

And would old avatars be deleted if not paid for in a month?

  136. #188 by Unknown on 2011.04.27 - 5:13 pm

    Confused.

  137. #189 by Unknown on 2011.04.27 - 12:37 pm

Well woah thats alot…. Well is there stuff in the world that we dont really need for instance rain..snow…clouds…in some areas or anything like that…that cost so much…Could you however tell me how much you would need each month to keep it open?

    • #190 by Michael Wilson on 2011.04.27 - 2:39 pm

Well, the Rain, Snow, and Clouds don’t change the number of people we have to have.

  138. #191 by Unknown on 2011.04.27 - 10:47 am

Yeahhh I understand that now…I had forgot it takes thounsands of dollars to run it my bad I was thinking a hundred but anyway I got people that never was a therian to check it out around 20 people…One girl quit and I got her to come back..she said she will if it reopens But I thank you for trying your best but If you get like 2 thounsand dollars a month is that enough to keep the world going?….Just wondering.

    • #192 by Michael Wilson on 2011.04.27 - 11:45 am

@ $2000/month, that’s $24,000/year. We’d need to pay (at least) for part-time accounting, a fulltime systems administration/operations person (a very senior person), and a fulltime engineer skilled with the There platform, and server costs unrelated to real estate / zones, and QA server costs, and company infrastructure (source control, etc, etc) and, and,.

      No, $24,000 / year won’t do it I’m afraid.

      • #193 by RRTT on 2011.04.27 - 4:29 pm

That’d be 200 people at $10 per month without any of them buying a single T$. I’d assume you might be able to bring in a bit more than that.

      • #194 by Michael Wilson on 2011.04.27 - 4:31 pm

Right now, we’re not making any other assumptions beyond subscriptions.

  139. #195 by Frostly on 2011.04.27 - 10:44 am

So MW, how does the outcome look so far?

  140. #196 by Unknown on 2011.04.27 - 7:54 am

Because people are upset its the only thing they had to do when they were bored. Closing There was fast and we didnt even have time to donate I know you thought of that but no one knew that we were running out of money and people would have donated more money to keep it running but no one told us ahead of time. And im sure if that happened it would have been up and running today.

    • #197 by Michael Wilson on 2011.04.27 - 10:14 am

No it would not have been. The old infrastructure was too expensive to run.

  141. #198 by Unknown on 2011.04.27 - 6:39 am

Doubt it will ever open. I give up hoping but thanks for trying. Miles well stop now were not getting any where with people gaming the system giving us false data.

    • #199 by Michael Wilson on 2011.04.27 - 6:42 am

I know it’s discouraging that there are people out there who would do that, but we’re not discouraged. All data is data. If someone is working hard to game the system, and know we know, then they must have a reason to be doing it. Figuring out that reason is the important thing.

  142. #200 by SSBPD There on 2011.04.27 - 5:18 am

    Hello Michael.

I was caught off guard to see this survey coming out, I mean, I felt it was too good to be true. There.com was not only a virtual hangout like most people call, for some it was a home, and for you to go through all this trouble to try and bring it back baffles me. I hope to be any part I can if (hoping when) There.com reopens. You truly are a hero for all you’re doing and hope to hear from you soon.

I’m so excited to see the survey on There.com about re-opening and becoming There2! I was a member of There since 2005 and I have a deep love for the world! Everytime I’ve run into someone from There in another virtual world, we talk about how much we love it. We should try to think of some ways to really get the word out there and financial support for this. If the biggest problem in re-opening is money that can be managed. I’ll be checking often now for updates! I’m keeping everything crossed that they re-open There!

How will you be sure that no underage people are able to sign up? Will it be like some virtual worlds that require you to send them a scan/fax of your ID for age verification? Just wondering.
It’s interesting…I was 12 when I started playing There, and now I’m 18. I remember I always wanted to create buildings and houses to sell, but at the time I didn’t know how. Now that I’m going to school for game art, I know how, but now there is no There. I’m hoping we can get There back soon, so I can finally show people other than my classmates my virtual art 🙂

what if you like set your age different to 18 but your really not ? will that matter ? like we get now your not responsible for us and stuff but what if it’s are own choice to play under-age ?

      The consequences would be unspeakable.

    • #219 by daniel on 2011.04.21 - 1:59 pm

k remember my question about my brother well he still likes to look at your page even if he cant play it right away and he would also like to know you answer to this question.lol but i told him not to get his hopes up. but comon MW 85% of the people that play halo are under 18 i mean there’s not much you can do

      • #220 by Sameer Anand on 2011.04.23 - 4:16 pm

Well, that is not entirely true. For example, Linden Labs has incorporated an age verification system to confirm users are over 18 years of age. I am sure if There.com wanted to, they could incorporate a system similar to this. It might alienate new users, but oh well.

      • #221 by SSBPD THERE on 2011.04.24 - 7:13 pm

I think once he says no the 3rd time I do not think he is just gonna say you can play. lol but its up to you to keep commenting.

    Hi (:
I just wanted to ask, How come the 18 plus, I’m 21 But I wanted to ask Why the 18 plus? I did See many Members in there who were in there teens Spending alot of money.. Like me and My other Friends on there.com, We all work. So it’s hard To play there.com At times So I carn’t pay alot of Money . 13-16 Were the Popularity I saw, Too be honest I do see where your coming for Mr Wilson, However. If you Don’t allow the Teens to come You will lose money won’t you? Because I do Have a younger sister of 16, Who Played there.com.. And Bought ALOT Of stuff if you look at her account, She bought $40, Every week.. But you would lose that becasue shes not able to play… Your losing money.. You might already know this, But I just wanted to put My point Forward. I honestly Belive in my heart that The teens should be aloud to play, If they pay And have there Parents talk to you on the phone or somthing…

Thankyou For taking the time of Reading my comment, And I hope this helps with Your New opening of there.com, All the best.
    – Lisa

    • #227 by daniel on 2011.04.20 - 1:24 pm

i already suggested that but he told me that unless i build a time machine and make my brother 18 he cant play. because when he was 12 he was banned for age, our mom sent in a fax to there and he was unbanned but MW said we cant do that but i don’t quite understand why. because don’t the rules still apply if your 16 and what to play there2 then if your 12 and what to play the teen there????

      • #228 by Michael Wilson on 2011.04.20 - 4:01 pm

The rules have changed. I’m sorry, but if you’re not 18, you can’t play. Sorry.

  162. #232 by daniel on 2011.04.19 - 3:17 pm

im all for 18+ but what can you do to prevent the game from being filled with teens like on call of duty or any other 18+ game?

  163. #233 by daniel on 2011.04.19 - 2:34 pm

OK so i had a good idea for there what if for like $25 you could change your avatar name and for $30 change your name tag colour……i know this might sound like a lot of money but i think if your really serious about changing your name-tag colour its not because i know a lot of people like blue and if they all picked blue that would make the there Olympics unfair but a choice is something i would like to see.

    • #238 by Michael Wilson on 2011.04.19 - 1:59 pm

Yes, if he built a time machine and is now 18. Or, if you built a time machine, and he’s now 18.

      Otherwise, I’m sorry, no.

  168. #243 by Sixhunny on 2011.04.18 - 3:53 pm

Hello everyone 🙂 Hello Michael! It was nice after a long haitus offline to find active blogs and surveys, considerations on what would be needed to reopen There.com. (thanks to Coolnet for directing me to all this) I was Greeter_Sixhunny for quite a number of years until family illness forced me to give my contract up, and trust me I was very sad about that, but family comes first. I have read through the blogs, the posts, watched chats in the different virtual reality games I have my hand in, and I guess I want to put my two cents in.

I found There.com not through advertising, but because a friend of mine wanted to play cards. I met alot of great people, of which one was Josie, one was Jay, and I used to love going to the meet and greet parties. I started volunteering and helping at the parties, throwing vehicles out, handing out paintball guns, dogs all over to train. I jumped at the chance when there was a job opening even though I felt like I was applying for something I had no background in, as I was in health care at the time working in a hospital. I can still remember my virtual interview, with umm Tiffany? (dont shoot me if the name is wrong, been a few years) And she asked “How do you feel your background fits in with There.com?” and my answer was “To be honest, I kind of feel like a hot dog vendor applying for a brain surgeon position”. Josie was there and she laughed, I relaxed, and the interview went well. I ended up working for There.com as a Greeter for quite a few years, and I loved every minute of it. So thats my background.

I know everyone misses There.com, it had become a big part of some of your lives. You just didn’t have a complete day without logging in and hanging out paintballing in Zephyr, or being mass thrown off the tallest mountain before server updates, or sitting there playing at one of the card tables with people racing cars around you. The people in There.com made what it was.

There.com was free for alot of people who did not upgrade, and utilized by alot of people with the intent to never upgrade or use any paid services. I cant tell you how many times I was told by someone who didnt speak english that they were sitting in an english class in a foreign country using There.com as a free way to practice english. Or how many times people played and enjoyed There.com without the means to ever upgrade or throw money into it.

When you look at the number of staff they had to just greet members, on top of the staffing to handle abuse, on top of staff to handle the incoming template uploads for approval to sell virtual items, management, server upkeep, technical staff, you are looking at alot of paychecks stacked up against free service that only offered optional upgrades that were not required to play. Yes, there was advertising contracts with several companies, but even with that, I am surprised Michael Wilson was able to keep it going for as long as he did before he had to shut There.coms doors.

I know they are discussing reopening There, but you all have to keep a few things in mind. There is ALOT of competition out there. Alot of it. You have to deal with virtual sites that have insane graphics, the ability to do more things, the ability to customize their own user interface, free memberships and yes, a serious lack of censorship for most of them whether they are considering themselves PG or not. Lets face it, the more you regulate, the more you have to pay your work force to regulate. Some of the tasks that employees held could be handed over to volunteers with less staff with perks and bonuses, but even then you have to be careful, as virtual goods that have monetary value can be considered currency, changing their status from volunteer to employee. You have servers to upgrade, designers, programmers, management, advertising to think about and start building so opening your doors again is a smooth transition.

Reading through the blogs and seeing all the messages, I think someone just got it in their head that all Michael Wilson has to do is say “OK, we are opening again today, flip the switch” when that is definitely not the case.

Instead of posting “We want there.com open!!” ….I post “What can we do to help you open?”, because I for one would be “There”

  169. #244 by daniel on 2011.04.17 - 11:28 am

well..theirs not much i cant say that everyone else hasn’t….i want there.com back. it was a place where i could escape depression and have tones of friends. and the best part….i couldn’t be bad at it. so i. as well as every one else. miss and want back there.com

    Hi Michael,

Graet site, I love the design of the blog, nice big pages, text is a good size and it’s nice and clean.
Anyways, I wanted to say I am very excited to hear There.com ‘might’ be returning and I think your idea of 18+ is a very good one.
I imagine sites like Facebook and WoW spend a significant amount of time policing under-age conduct etc…

One thing I just thought of suggesting is a name change because it’s SO HARD to google for there!
Some ideas off the top of my head.
Social Paradigm (I don’t even know what that means)
Park Place (sounds gay I know but it could catch on, I mean come on, iPad, what tha?)
    Social Central
Big Red Talking (kind of a play on the old game Big Red Racing, which is a DOS game of which There.com is a complete replicated almost!! (reminds me SO MUCH of there it’s not funny)).
    PersonBook
    SocialBook
    ^ lawsuit anyone?
    Meeting Place
    Social Park Central

I could go on, anyways, thanks again!

    -David

First off, hey SSBPD, hows everything?

Second, I want to say something to Mr. Wilson. I understand that there is a complex 3d world that costs a lot of money to run, however there are alternate ways to run the website. You could have a few ads. I think that a few ads is a small price to pay to play the best virtual world on the web. I can and will commit to as much membership is needed. I spent a lot of time and money on there and couldn’t help but feel saddened by there closing. I do agree that the name “There” is not as likely to appear in search results as lets say… smallworlds or second life. Maybe you could put there into a phrase, like you did on this title of your blog. Lastly, if you do open there II (PLEASE) could you warn us in advance if the game is low on finance? Im sure we have a lot of members willing to help out.

    Thanks,
    Mr_donenzone

    Hello,

As of yesterday I filled out the survey that was brought to my attention for There II…Just a quick question..

Would everything be the same as for last year? or would they reboot the whole system and restart?

    Thank you..

    SSBPD

  173. #250 by 1969Craven on 2011.04.11 - 12:22 pm

MW, if you the survey turns out to be enough people interested, is it going to be the same.. or as you put it lighter version “Of course you could make There “lighter weight” by getting rid of, oh, distributed physics, but then it wouldn’t have been the same experience” ? took the survey, I paid for VMTV till it closed.. there.com.. and would again for either one.. how about a joint MTV venture.. not one or the other .. but both combined.. both getting advertising.. both getting people to sign up.. ??

  174. #252 by Amanda on 2011.04.10 - 5:16 pm

Hey Michael, first of all thanks for the GREAT experience i had on There.com it was AWESOME ! 😉 I just wanted to ask you ; that in the case you have the oportunity to reopen there.com how would it look like? Lol i mean will it be the same as There.com ( There2) ? or will it look different ?? ( Will it be like it was just that with smaller space?) Thanks For Reading :] Amanda !!!

Please be nice to Mr Wilson. As much as it pained me to see There close, I also believe Mr Wilson completely when he says it didn’t make business sense to keep it open. He is a genius and a sound business man. The fact that we are all here on this blog shows that he created an amazing product which touched so many people in so many ways. I’m sure he and his team miss there more than any of us. Like it or not, it;s true. There was their creation, their special child and we were just users.

Thanks to There team for the mazing experience. I miss there so much.

Thanks to all of you (members) for creating part of the experience in your own little ways

    Cheers (Tassader)

  177. #255 by Marianne (JoyofLife) on 2011.04.10 - 7:36 am

THERE.COM was a brilliant, well-managed, intelligent and beautiful virtual world. As an older member who spent thousands of dollars running a vehicle loaner operation (Joy and Friends Loaners and Syn City)… I cannot find another virtual world that even comes close and natural body function and realistic consistent physics. Try finding any site where you can ride a hoverboard (NONE), race buggies, have pets, paintball, build, design, garden, play cards, run a store or build a city. THERE, was and can be, a place for people who recognize all those features COST MONEY. The paradigm THERE created… where we had a place to live, play and make friends was unique. I still corresspnd with friends I made in UK and Netherlands. It was truly a well rounded virtual world for social play with the benefit of artistic pursuits as well as athletic play via fun sports.

After one year, I’ve sampled all the major worlds and none combine the above with an EASY USER INTERFACE. $10 or $30 a month is too much? That’s silly…we spend 10x that on gas to drive, on food we don’t really want to eat, on clothes we don’t need. To spend $100 a month for entertainment and a place to socialize is terrifically reasonable – to most adults. I have nothing against the kids getting limited access, but it is the folks who have money and recognize the value, who can and will pay to play.

I certainly hope that Mr. Wilson considers the models which could make THERE a profitable enterprise, and that re-opening will happen.

I’d ask that folks who have criticisms please consider that the issues are much greater than we can know, and that certainly Mr. Wilson had no pleasure or malice in making the difficult decision to stop losing money on THERE. Let’s be gracious and open hearted to believe that everyone at Makena did the best they could to create such a pleasurable experience for us all and support Mr. Wilson with constructive and support comments.

Mostly, please distribute the survey link to everyone who may be interested and could financially support a reopned THERE2.

I for one now pledge $5,000.00 for a lifetime membership (and a really good island funzone) hehe. Let me know where I might enroll as a “Founding Member”. I am thrilled beyond words that this is a possibility!

Hey I tried searching for the person you speak of being corrupt…Wanna just tell me his name?

Also the 18+ thing sits fine with me but im sure youre aware that 60%-80% of your users were 13-16…So There2 would be in need of brand new members.

Also the pay/hour thing is completely out of the question for me and im sure most others would agree as that cost far too much not to mention how much of a hassle that is if youre going to charge do it monthly and no more than $10/month

    Thanks

  180. #260 by alex on 2011.04.08 - 4:44 pm

yeah, those places like zephyr and the egypt place, and the weird air place, were pretty much wasted space. yeah, it was cool to fly around the world for literally an hour over that fake blue water (before it was updated) but that’s wasted money too. that game was all social, man, people didn’t care about big expansive oceans and new islands with fancy features. at the end of the day, they cared about standing in a circle and talking on some dumb island or in zephyr

    • #261 by Michael Wilson on 2011.04.08 - 4:46 pm

The ocean was ONE sector. It took ONE server.

    • #262 by OdileS AKA MmeOdile on 2011.04.14 - 9:18 am

Hi…I had to reply about the ocean space….Some of us I am sure loved the fact that the world was round and had water…I myself would fly for alot..all over and from island to island in my airplane…I loved the fact that the ocean was vast and we could just go and go and go….Now that there is talk about ‘there’ possibly reopening…maybe the ocean could be a bit smaller and the islands closer together…but it would be great to still have the effect of being able to fly out over the ocean and continue flying from island to island..just on a smaller scale….

      • #263 by Michael Wilson on 2011.04.14 - 9:43 am

One more time: the size of the ocean did not impact the number of servers we had. All of the ocean was in one sector and used up one server.

Sorry to Say it but if there.com opens again i wouldnt want to be part of it i was in there.com and spent money thinking it was my home and i have meet great people there and when YOU MR WILSON closed the game wwhat makes you think any of us would have fauth trust or belief in you after all you have done.. i had stuff that i spent thousands of dollars on and you decide to close it because of so many different storys and risked children with online preditors come on get real .. like you had on your profile the Buck stops there.. WELL your Wrong my buck still continues and will always continue but i will need to be insane off my rocker and desprite to ever trust a man who doesnt care abt no ONE but him self so all i can say is GOOD LUCK in failing again and that sould be easy for you to do since you havent provened anything to anyone who asked simply questions you brushed people off who was trying to make your gaming site safe so why bother opening another site .. you have to many of the true thereians that are angered or has no trust to you at all .. so why dont you save that buck that stopped there because anything to do with you or mekena you will never see me buck nor my name in your gaming site

    • #266 by Michael Wilson on 2011.04.08 - 12:03 pm

We decided to close it because paying thousands of dollars every month to keep it open, since 1997, was no longer sustainable.

If you read my prior posts you will see that has consistently been the message.

What you choose to believe is of course, your choice, and you should do whatever you think is best.

  183. #267 by faith on 2011.04.02 - 8:58 am

OOps that was an accident, so i had played that game since day one.
in a way its my childhood which is kind of weird eh?
for a while i had a mac so i couldnt play, and i was waitinguntil i got a pc, and the day i finally did, there shut down.
to be honest even if you started out small, even 2D i would be on there everyday paying whatever fee you could throw at us.
That game was golden, and all other mmorpgs sucked in comparison. I don’t understand why the word didnt get out to people
but i do remember one guy who played it, spent a rediculous amount on it, and was part of Warner Bros. There was many people
on that game that would spend thousands to get it back up
and im sure if you send an anouncement many people will throw in money
    just try.
    just once.
you know? you could start out small with a tiny island, instead of a massive world. or even 2D, youd be amazed at how much money people would throw in.
and the economy has been getting better?
maybe look at what people want and impliment it and you could start a revolution and make a lottt of money.

Hello, i am an old Designer of There.com and i was wondering if its possible for you to somehow make it so that people could go to their friends list and get their old there.com friends emails. because i had lots of friends on there.com and when i went on vacation there.com was closing and when i got back it was closed. I wish i could have gotten my friends emails or facebooks.

    Hey MW,

Are you guys currently working on another game? If not then what are you all working on atm. 🙂

    • #276 by musicmom on 2011.04.08 - 7:20 pm

‘patch “thats the spirit Syntech! “

  189. #277 by trenton1231 on 2011.03.13 - 9:24 pm

    Dear MW,
Just a quick question that I didnt see answered. If There ever did reopen, would our previous accounts still be accisable or no?

    • #278 by Michael Wilson on 2011.03.14 - 7:41 am

Yes, we would probably give people some amount of time to reclaim their old accounts. If There were to ever re-open, we’d start with a nice “empty” system again, and restore people’s avatars and inventories as they returned.

  190. #279 by RRTT on 2011.03.09 - 7:36 pm

A year later, nothing on today’s market comes even close to There.com as it was. I am still poking my head into a couple virtual worlds, and awaiting the release of MW’s favorite upcoming world, but I have no high hopes as those would only be wasted. There was awesome while it lasted, and proved to be one of those things that is simply too good to be true.

Mike, your lack of posts about Makena Tech or Virtual Congress or Anything at all are making the internet significantly more boring. At least with the blog here we can think about there a little 😛

  191. #280 by Syntech on 2011.03.09 - 2:04 pm

Hey Micheal Willson I was just wondering maybe you could cut down some of the physics by eliminating space and maybe reducing to one island called the main island and then later have people pay rent for another island enough say $100 upfront then they pay rent. There is so many ways and you could also get extra money by eliminating some of the staff members like instead of paying people to be helpers/greeter/support ask for volunteers and get a community manager to manage all helpers greeter and support. I know millions of people would volunteer to be one of them truthfully i would. Also if you guys have any other games out there that I could join please let me know.

  192. #281 by Brandyn_1 on 2011.03.09 - 9:28 am

I agree with Babs I miss There.com today as much as I missed one year ago. ‘sad ‘td ‘sigh

  193. #282 by PurpleMia on 2011.03.09 - 9:20 am

Thankyou for keeping There running as long as you could. It was a privilege to live There and an honour to be a Therian.

    • #283 by Brandyn_1 on 2011.03.09 - 9:40 am

      Agreed very much so. 🙂

  194. #284 by BABS on 2011.03.09 - 7:28 am

I miss it as much today as I did a year ago. ‘sigh

  195. #285 by Sameer Anand on 2011.02.22 - 3:47 pm

Why not attempt to sell it to Facebook? Facebook can run the servers, and they are surely open for ideas. A virtual world will help them expand social networking. You’re in California, right? Why not go meet them?

    • #286 by daniel on 2011.04.17 - 12:23 pm

facebook sucks i would hate it if he sold it to facebook and it wouldnt be special anymore

  196. #288 by Antonio on 2011.02.17 - 10:23 pm

Please still continue and try to re-open there.com though 😦

  197. #289 by Will on 2011.02.11 - 11:29 am

Do you mind hinting who that exception is XD? Im extremely curious about it if you cant list a name maybe say if its LL (Lin Labs) i even took out a few letters 😉

    • #290 by Michael Wilson on 2011.02.13 - 11:34 am

No, it’s not Linden Labs, or any of the established and genuine Virtual World efforts. I’m sure if you look around the web and forums about Virtual Worlds you’ll figure out who they are. Actually I’m not even sure there’s a “they” there.

      • #291 by There_forever on 2011.02.16 - 11:13 am

No, I don’t really believe they are a ‘they’ either! It’s probably just ‘him’ and a few people he is still able to have an influence upon.

  198. #292 by Will on 2011.02.11 - 11:16 am

Who offered to buy you out…atleast give me a hint 😦 Was it SL? (LL)

    • #293 by Michael Wilson on 2011.02.11 - 11:18 am

NO ONE has made a legitimate offer to buy There. I don’t know where this story keeps coming from but it keeps coming up.

      • #294 by Will on 2011.02.11 - 11:24 am

oh it said on the myths you said ONE PERSON made an offer but it was morraly bankrupt.

      • #295 by Michael Wilson on 2011.02.11 - 11:27 am

Sorry, what I meant was we would of course accept a legitimate offer from anyone, with the exception of one well known group that is so morally bankrupt that it would be unacceptable. Of course, we’d also hesitate to sell it to someone who was going to use it for, say, pornography.

  199. #296 by Sameer Anand on 2011.02.06 - 12:36 pm

Oh and also, how did you create the There enviornment, is something I really never understood. Did you guys have to actually create an entire map of the landscape like they do in other console based games? I cannot imagine how you guys must have coded such a huge map. But I must agree, There is light weight. My lag in There was a lot less compared to games such as Second Life. But then again, Second Life has a lot of assets, textures, animations, scripts etc.. You guys were really smart when you designed There.

  200. #297 by Sameer Anand on 2011.02.06 - 12:29 pm

You’re business was great, but I started to realize why it did not gain many members, and why Second Life did. It was your name, There. Since There is a common used English word, you cannot find too much information about it online, even if you did a search on There.com. The same question I asked you earlier, what was There.com programmed in, I did the same search on Google and nothing came up about There.com. Second Life is unique, not many people use that in basic conversation. However, I really love how you organized your world rather then Second Life. I would love to get a team of developers on making something similar to There, like an open-source project. I loved being able to travel around openly. There was really no need for me to teleport anywhere.

What physics engine did you use? If I had to make some sort of open-source project, I would have used Nvidia’s Physx engine.

Second Life runs on probably about 55 million dollars a year, and thats including the servers, offices, staff etc.. I’m not asking you to go in depth about how much There.com ran off of per year, but was it around that amount, or lower?

  201. #298 by Sameer on 2011.02.03 - 12:49 pm

What programming languages was There programmed in? And how many programmers did it take to make There?

I am just curious because maybe There couldve been programmed in such ways that it was more light weight, but maintaining its features. If I had to guess, was There programmed in C++?

    • #299 by Michael Wilson on 2011.02.05 - 2:04 am

There was written in C++, plus some Perl and other languages. and, at the height of development I think there were 30+ engineers involved in it’s creation. This of course doesn’t count QA, Artists, and Operations, which were whole departments in their own right.

Of course you could make There “lighter weight” by getting rid of, oh, distributed physics, but then it wouldn’t have been the same experience.

In today’s world, There is probably the lightest weight product you’ll see. I doubt any other product can do what it does given limited bandwidth and memory (I’m not counting zone-based browser products, which lack distributed physics, or even extensive environments).

  202. #300 by Sameer Anand on 2011.02.02 - 3:03 pm

Sorry, I jumped to conclusions. You are not inaccurate about your decision. I can imagine how much money it costs to keep something like There.com running. I currently work on the Open Simulator open-source project, and I can understand how much power your servers would be needed to keep as many people on it without problems. Yet, ignoring the options other people have suggested, I can still argue that there are some things which you have not yet thought of which I have. This is why I want you to email me, I can be more specific if we werre chatting in real time. I dislike periodic replies hehe. So please consider emailing me. We, the community can do this. You just have to be willing to hear us out.

  203. #301 by Sameer Anand on 2011.02.02 - 2:36 pm

Mr. Wilson, in all honestly, I think you are inaccurate. I am sure your authoritative team has done their calculations, and I am sure you are precise, but honestly, I can argue that you have no idea the options you are open to right this moment. You closed There.com in early 2010. We are now in early 2011, and a lot has progressed. You started this company in 2005. You will not acquire a rapid amount of consumers within 5 years based on the features that were offered. There.com was only in its early stages, continuing to develop. However, your company was developing rapdily, even more rapid then you can imagine. I can suggest that you go ahead and re-read what is on the There.com website, look at all those successful companies that came to you, and partnered with There.com. There.com was just getting started, yet, I think you failed to realize that – Moreso, I believe that you were mainly focused on the negative effects of our economy.

Mr. Wilson, I have several ideas that would get you started on this again without a large amount of money at the start, and I can help you get going again. I’m taking all of these computer graphics / computer science / business and economics classes in school, and I believe I can help you help the people who want There.com to re-open. So it’s worth emailing me, and giving me a moment of your time. At least consider emailing me. More than anyone, I know you want There.com to re-establish the most.

  204. #302 by Musiclover on 2011.01.23 - 8:07 am

Micheal im not sure if you have the time to read this but ever since i first tried there i loved it. It was an amazing website and no website could replace it or be like it. Not everywebsite has never ending lad to drive on! People were so nice there and there were no inapropriate stuff like in second life or imvu. There were way more fun events then any other website i have ever been to! i made the best friends ever and had the most fun with races, paintballs fights, the there oylympics! I loved everything and i wouldnt change a thing! Please please please!! I could say that word 10000 times just to get you to open there back up! i know were supposed to move on but how can we from a website thats so well made and great? Every day is just boring on the other websites ive seen! Just please please! think about what im saying! theres always a way things can happen! Just be positive about it!

  205. #303 by Jordan on 2010.12.09 - 10:58 am

Michael do you know HOW many people would pay monthly to play there.com again?
just limit yourself to un-used space from there.com (space people NEVER go to) and it may be pooible to re open there.com
    or vMTV.
i never had a chance to play There but im asking you to please reconcider 🙂

    • #304 by Michael Wilson on 2010.12.09 - 8:45 pm

I know that a lot of people would pay, but at the end of the day, it wouldn’t be enough. As you can see in my post, the size of the world was only one of the expense drivers for running the business. Believe me, we did that math every six ways from Sunday and the fact is there weren’t enough active members to support the service as it was implemented.

      • #305 by there_forever on 2010.12.10 - 4:36 am

Unfortunately it is almost impossible for ‘There’ to reopen…
Guys and girls, we should all move on and maybe some day we might have the opportunity to go THERE again!!!

Still waiting for there.com to open.?What is needed is better tech. for less money.ha ha ha..is that possible…all you guys that want there.com to open..start thinking of ways to do it..like its possible to invent something that will help..after all…there was Edison etc..so get busy with your ideas..someone might just come up with something
I can still see all the places I explored on there.com and would be the first to return….I have a real life also but there is a virtual reality and do we really know what reality is…its what we create that makes it so…I will not give up on Michal but guys let him do what he does best..be creative..he will find away one day….after all virtual reality is of the furture not the past…you all will be surprised to see it happening..in the mean time.. live you life’s..that is most important…find the spiritual part of yourself..seek..thank you..Crystal_Lyn1

Michael I know u probably wont read this comment.. but i can hope:)!! u HAVE to open There.com PLZ.. it meant the world to me and tons of other people i know.. it was the only place we could go to get away from the stuff we had to deal with in real life. I literally cried the day There.com closed… i know that sounds stupid.. but taking away There.com was like taking away family! I met my long lost sister on There.com, and were actually going to meet in RL near the end of august! There.com was literally my 2nd life.. it was more than just a game. I havent heard from most of the people that were my best friends on that game since it closed.. And screw coca-cola and scion and all those other companies!!! There.com is perfect without those companies… things like coca-cola just made There.com laggier.. i actually liked it alot more with the companies all over the place.. you HAVE to find a way to reopen There.com PLEASE ❤
