Bad Show, Bad Show

Ok, someone at 72.213.xxx.xx is having a grand old time attempting to register without an invitation, with other people’s avatar names.

Not nice.

We will be contacting you shortly.

Sigh.

I shoulda read the blog before I tried to log in yesterday 😛 iv been out of the country for a few weeks, and when I got back first thing i did was hit up there.com and low and behold The login screen was there! I tried to login a few time but it said my stuff was wrong. Tried to do a password reset, but again it said my info was wrong. After trying to reregister thinking my avie was deleted nothing happened. So i decided to hit up the blog and re-read from were I left off and now I understand why it was not working 😛

Hopefully I do not get flagged, then again its unlikely because I only tried to log into my Avie, not other peoples like some jerk apparently tried to do.

Michael Wilson, For the younger players. When they turn 18, Will they have the ability to get their Avatar back? Or will they need to start fresh?

    • #5 by Eatings on 2011.07.15 - 5:05 am

MW stated in a previous post. People who don’t lie about their age, and truthfully say they’re under 18, will have their accounts held on reserve until 6 months after they’re 18, or whatever.

  5. #6 by dewimonster on 2011.07.14 - 1:28 pm

    Damn trolls,

Is it just me or is there always some idiot trying to ruin something.. I mean seriously what was going through this person’s mind (if its there) at the time of trying to hack into a world that is still in “testing’.

My guess: El oh El, Ima tryin hack into There.com cuz im a leet haxorpro.

Then as MW notices him: …Get off my lawn. -Pulls out the banhammer and smokes him/her with it.-

    -Dewi ;D

  6. #7 by Aion on 2011.07.14 - 1:05 pm

  9. #10 by Jennifer Rickenbacker on 2011.07.14 - 11:01 am

Thanks for keeping us up to date on everything. Looking forward to logging back into There. Once There reopens I am sure they will not give up on their little games.

  10. #11 by Aisha on 2011.07.14 - 9:21 am

For sure that person can’t be on there when this open again, you got his IP

    • #12 by Seg_Vio on 2011.07.14 - 1:42 pm

      @Aisha

Any hacker with half a nugget of common sense will use a proxy server (or several) that will mask their IP address. Sounds to me though that this person does not have the common sense that I just mentioned lol!
So MW may get lucky and be able to IP ban this guy , But a hardware ban would work better.

  11. #13 by Namron on 2011.07.14 - 8:45 am

    Hmm…

Sounds like you’ve found a guinea pig for using amber!

  12. #14 by tim on 2011.07.14 - 8:36 am

  13. #15 by Eatings on 2011.07.14 - 8:21 am

      • #17 by Eatings, Sputters, Pneumonia, ect. on 2011.07.14 - 8:02 pm

        I appreciate the feedback. Thanks.

  14. #18 by Pilot_51 on 2011.07.14 - 8:08 am

Glad you caught him before he found a working login. Hopefully you know enough about him to do more than an IP ban. Isn’t there a limit for failed logins? Ideally they should be forced to use Forgot Password or wait at least 10 minutes after about 5 failed attempts. Though, I understand some hackers are very determined to repeatedly clear cookies/cache/sessions, change IP/proxies, or simply wait 10 minutes between every 5 attempts.

To everyone else, this is why you need a strong password.

Since I’m in the mood to waste time typing a bunch of useful stuff which would ultimately be ignored, this is a good opportunity to learn some tips to make your passwords very strong yet easy to remember…
    1. Use a length of at least 8 characters. The time required for brute force attacks increases significantly with each additional character; we’re talking around 200 years for a typical computer to go through every combination of an 8 character password that has a special character (or about 2 days for all lower case), and that’s if the attacker doesn’t get stopped.
    2. Use some form of leetspeak (e.g. l33tsp3ak or 13375p34k or |_337$p3@|<). This alone will significantly boost the strength, not only for brute force attacks but also guessability.
    3. Capitalize the first letter of each word, optional if the letter is in leet. If you can remember it, go for patterned (e.g. alternating) or random capitalization.
    4. Include the name of the site/program or something related to it so it's still relatively safe when/if your password on another site gets compromised. This is especially important if you want the rest of the password to remain the same to keep it memorable across services.
    5. Throw in an emoticon and/or punctuation for some less common characters, especially if the leetspeak doesn't already do that.
    Example: 7h3r315B4ck!^-^ (unleeted: ThereIsBack!^-^)

These steps are what I'd consider a happy medium for a good password. Tips for an even stronger password and other interesting info (such as how long it takes to brute force different password lengths/types) can be found here: http://lifehacker.com/5505400/how-id-hack-your-weak-passwords
FYI, that article is what got me to switch from using weak passwords. I thought I'd have trouble remembering such strong passwords that are different on every service, but that turns out to be far from the case.
Nearly all sites have password recovery features, so as long as you used a legit email address that still works, don't be scared about forgetting your password. There are also password storage options that can automatically log you in so you don't need to type them every time, such as what is included in nearly every modern browser, just be sure to secure that storage with a strong password. Also, if your passwords aren't super weak (like names or dictionary words), there shouldn't be much need to dedicate the time or rush to change all your passwords, just do each one when convenient such as after logging in.

I hope this helps at least someone become more secure. We wouldn't want a hacker to cause the death of an avatar.

    • #19 by Michael Wilson on 2011.07.14 - 8:54 am

There’s a very recent study which shows that passwords like this “grandma.cornfield.piglets” is just as effective a password as $#$glarg. The study was quite legitimate, and it makes it almost impossible to brute force the passwords, yet, makes them easy to remember. Of course you shouldn’t use things like “my.dogs.name.is.spot”, but a “nonesense” sentence you’ll remember.

      JADP.

      • #20 by JasonMK on 2011.07.14 - 9:10 am

Do I need to login to change my password to “grandma.cornfield.piglets” or can I make an open request here on this blog to have it changed? That way if I forget it I know I’ll have it written down somewhere where I (and all of you) can find it.

      • #21 by Seg_Vio on 2011.07.14 - 12:39 pm

For most of my passwords, I use items from old video games, or characters that are rare to the game that I use. So far I have had excellent luck and have NEVER been hacked. A book I’ll suggest that will help anyone who wants to keep their computer secure that I stand behind “the hackers handbook” is something everyone should read! It teaches normal people the methods of hackers sO that you know how to defend from them. The most common mistake people make is that they never make an administrator password. That allows hackers to use a account named Administrator/null and they will have total control over your puter.

For the rest of us… We use Trunk Monkeys! 😛

      • #22 by MrScrooge on 2011.07.14 - 7:53 pm

That’s what I do with my passwords. Many years ago I had someone brute my e-mail and then take everything associated with that e-mail, delete it, steal it, anything they could with it. Since then I use made up words and names and numbers for passwords. Such a shame that I couldn’t remember some of my friends IDs and never got to talk to them again after that incident but it taught me how to better protect myself online. Also have to be careful about password recovery questions. I also make those answers insane and confusing.

Example: What was the name of your first dog? Answer: beatles42teerts19

I have a bad short term memory because of medication I’m on so I sometimes have to write these things down until I get them memorized. . .sadly, I also end up losing the paper I wrote on. Frustrating.

      • #23 by Michael Wilson on 2011.07.14 - 7:55 pm

Wait, so you mean those wonderful emails to me weren’t from you???? But, what will I do with this ring? This dress? This veil?

      • #24 by Skye on 2011.07.15 - 12:40 am

Hold the wedding anyway. Marry an invisible groom. Convince everyone there that they better pretend they can see you or the Theredogs will die. Giggle madly. Throw avatars off mountains instead of flowers behind you. Convince the world you think THEY are insane.

Or sell them on Craigslist. Your choice.

      • #25 by MrScrooge on 2011.07.15 - 8:53 am

Hmm, wait. . .Yes, I remember that very well now. I think we should get hitched in Vegas. . .wait, is it even legal there yet? Everything else is. I’ll make back-up plans for New York just in case!

        😛

      • #26 by Lady Tigrane on 2011.07.15 - 3:25 pm

Where will the wedding be? I vote Zephyr… Right on the main tower platform.

WildBilly can officiate and we can throw paintballs instead of rice. Now we gotta pick the wedding party.. hmm.

(literally laughin so hard I’m cryin.. )

they waste your time in their always unsuccesfull attempts cuz they cant pay up

  18. #30 by JasonMK on 2011.07.14 - 6:40 am

So, let’s say they were able to signup/log in. Don’t you think they would have been noticed? Just imagine the 3 Guinea pigs joined by a 4th…”hey, how’d you get in here…”. [Images of paintball guns and a chase come to mind] But seriously, it is like stealing someone’s jacket in high school and you know you can never wear it to school.

  19. #31 by RAY on 2011.07.14 - 6:07 am

this is one reason i want thouughs game cards to pay for there fee credit cards bad idea imagin someone trying that and they can have a feild day on ya credit card hope you still think about some way we can pay for there other then credit cards MW

  22. #34 by JonmiChel on 2011.07.14 - 4:57 am

Lmao, they’re just noobs in the internet as I see. Once you get in the internet nothing is safe, and even less when you’re trying to register into a “data base” with your IP always on the top!! LMAO.

  23. #35 by DodgeBoy101 on 2011.07.14 - 4:19 am

Well I hope this doesnt mean we will have to wait longer because 1 bad fruit out of the bunch desided to be stupid, please let us know if this will delay any further process, and if this person does not get banned, please tell us his avitar name, so we can all paintball him 🙂

    • #36 by xSnoopy on 2011.07.14 - 7:01 am

      Dodge,
IM me in game when it opens. If it is who I think it is, I will tell you.
PS, Your probably gonna have to stand in a very long line for your turn to kick his butt. 🙂

    WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!

  25. #39 by yankeeinthesouth on 2011.07.14 - 12:42 am

I could be wrong but I’m wondering if it is someone that is either already banned or underage. I cant see someone that is all set to get into There doing this. Might also be why their using other people accounts?? I dont know, I’m just glad MW is putting a stop to it. ‘tu I hope everyone can behave now so they can atleast get the ThereIM open, lol.

  26. #40 by Kevman95 on 2011.07.14 - 12:37 am

Always a way past those IP blocks, i hope he has other methods of blocking…(Maybe have his MAC address?) but even that could be easily changed.

Lets hope we dont see from him anytime soon.

    • #41 by xSnoopy on 2011.07.14 - 6:58 am

      Kev,
I doubt that the ability to Perm ban has changed much in the last 16 months.
If it’s a certain individual in the UK, we all just have to keep our ears to the ground and if he shows up, in an alt avie, let Makena know.
All of the old timers know who he is, especially the Paintballers.
The guy was a sorry POS then, and apparently has not matured much since There closed.

      • #42 by Grace Summers on 2011.07.16 - 11:10 am

^ Here you go again accusing somebody without facts.
I believe your “certain someone” from the “UK” committed his act.. what? 3 – 4 years ago now?
I’m pretty sure James isn’t the only person who played there that is capable of doing this.

  34. #56 by Jerry on 2011.07.13 - 8:58 pm

I don’t know what that guy was thinking. He thought he could find the avatar’s names that were chosen and the password also? Now I am sure you will ban him from signing up now. Probably some 20 year old wannabe hacker.

  39. #61 by ant1977 on 2011.07.13 - 6:38 pm

I hope they learn a lesson here!

  40. #62 by Mr_Perry on 2011.07.13 - 6:09 pm

I may be wrong…but I don’t think an IP block would work….most services use dynamic Ip addressing nowadays.
but I am sure MW and crew will deal with whomever it is appropriately.

  41. #63 by Justine on 2011.07.13 - 5:54 pm

I can’t wait for There.com to reopen. I hadn’t thought about There in a while, I wonder if my email is working.

  42. #64 by Thumdar on 2011.07.13 - 5:25 pm

Lame. Why is there always someone trying to ruin things for the rest of us? I’m guessing MW has a good idea who it is (that’s me speculating 100%). I say that because I know who I would guess is doing it. I could be be wrong, but I doubt it. BTW Michael, is this an official page? http://www.facebook.com/pages/Therecom/194422060602192?sk=wall

  43. #67 by jakejackson on 2011.07.13 - 5:04 pm

If these people stop pestering Mr Wilson he could concentrate on OPENING! If I could find these idiots I would break out the Cat of Nine Tails and have a field day while waiting for THERE to open, thank you. Back to you MW!

On a Side Note There.com does resolve to a 50.18.46.154 which is owned by Amazon!

So Like MW was saying they are using their “cloud services” for hosting needs now.

Cmon There!!! Thanks again MW for getting this going!

    • #74 by Michael Wilson on 2011.07.13 - 4:34 pm

Yes. There is now running on my Kindle.

Now where did I leave it?

        Katt

      • #77 by xSnoopy on 2011.07.14 - 6:45 am

        Michael,
You know the rest of that IP address. Send the Feds or Bobbies to cuff that jackass up and take him to jail.
On your Kindle? DAMN I am jealous, just got one for the wife. She loves it! Doubt it would do very well with Paintball though.
STOP teasing us Michael! You have several hundred potential Beta testers that would gladly give up their first born to be There, right now! 🙂

      • #78 by Eatings on 2011.07.14 - 8:19 am

What are the police going to do for an internet attack? Nothing. They weren’t stealing money, or anything. They were just trying to get on accounts. A simple hack that any kid with the right software can do.(Don’t get any ideas people… -_-)

That would be so cool if you actually could play There on an iPad, iPhone, iTouch. That would be a dream.

I can picture it now… Walking down the street holding my iPad, and just on there.com aswell. Chilling on my couch, with my iPad, on there.com. Dropping a load, with my iPad, on there.com. hehe(:

      • #79 by xSnoopy on 2011.07.14 - 9:19 am

        Eatings,
Apparently you don’t know who this person is. If it is who a lot of us think it is, he is and was very capable of stealing from Makena. He is not some innocent kid doing this for a lark.
If he continues down the path he is on, he will probably end up in jail.
        My humble opinion only.

      • #80 by Chagall on 2011.07.14 - 9:36 am

ThereIM on iOS and Android would be awesome… Now where did I put Tablatronix and Bedicus… ‘hmmm

    • #81 by Grace Summers on 2011.07.16 - 11:07 am

lol… Ken you are spending way to much time accusing DP.

  49. #82 by Sn3aky on 2011.07.13 - 3:42 pm

Lets see so someone from the 72.213.XXX.XX

Since I take it you are leaving out the Deci. Numbers are using the X’s that only leave a small block of addresses.

    72.213.100.10 -72.213.255.99

    According to ARIN
Cox Communications has the following net blocks
    72.213.96.0 – 72.213.127.255 OK
    72.213.128.0 – 72.213.191.255 OK
    72.213.192.0 – 72.213.223.255 ATL
    72.213.224.0 – 72.213.255.255 ATL

So the 72.213.0.0 /16 is all actually theirs.(if you look at the entire range)

So given that DNS isn’t an issue (names not being left to where they aren’t actually at)

The intruder location could be in in Oklahoma or Atlanta

Now they are a residential and business provider so they could have these allocated anywhere in the country as well it really depends but the 10 mins I spent looking at this I could trace out each address at work that would be possible give the combination MW provided but lets not get crazy on this.

    Start the hunt?

    • #83 by Chagall on 2011.07.14 - 6:03 am

      . . .CRAB PEOPLE!

    • #85 by stxdixiechick on 2011.07.15 - 7:51 am

they could be in Oklahoma or Atlanta…. or they could be on a 3G type card like I use. My card frequently reports that I’m in Kansas, Atlanta, Dallas, Colorado, and New York… depending on what day/time I connect to the internet. I get banned from many sites this way :S (and, yes, I got banned from the old there.com because of this a few times as well. Without support, I highly doubt I will be able to return to there.com ever again because of this issue.) I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I don’t get my ip blocked from the new there.com, but I’m sure it will happen… eventually.

The disaster might be coming for him soon!

Even if this doesn’t get published in your blog, Mr. Wilson, I hope it brings some humor to the office!

This is horrible, why must people do stuff like this? Can’t they just appreciate the hard work MW and his team are putting into this?
But how did he try to register, because when I go to There.com I don’t see any option to register, so doesn’t that mean that he had
to have gotten help by the 3 lucky people you chose to test out ThereIM?

    Hope to see everyone soon!

Boy does that irk me. Why do people do what they do…If you can think it, people will do it. For some its a intellectual challenge and they really don’t care about anyone else, others read the paper lately? Oh wait papers are old school, read the news lately?…Lets just hope the cloud provider Amazon has put up a lot of barriers to your account. You might want to think about changing that password once you get in. Onward.and upward.!!..I hope Francis 7 is in there too. If anyone deserves to be first he does. Thank MW and Team!

I’v been watching everything unfold for the trip back home woo hoo. Off subject when the door do reopen do we need to uninstall every thing and down load the client agen? I couldn’t and wouldn’t remove there from my computer. I one in a while pop it up and wish lol. As for the Butt head that tried to get in I think they need to be put at the bottom of the pile :O)

staring into the window say open open open lol.

    bhrocky out.

    • #109 by Beta2003 on 2011.07.13 - 3:02 pm

According to whats been mentioned before, you’ll have two options Rocky:

      1. Delete everything (maybe save your gamekit data (zone layouts) and chat logs if they are still there first) – which may save you time if There still installs to the same location.
(if you do this, go ahead and defragment your drive too for even better system health)

      or

      2. Download the new There automatically when you sign in, which will delete your old There and install the new one.

It would seem likely that when Makena restores our assets, they’ll do so in a way that adds everything to your new avatar’s AvMan so you can retriever your inventory faster. That means pretty much everything will have a new doid so ANYTHING you have cached would only make more problems.

Ergo: even if nothing else had changed in the client (unlikely), the client will have a new version number which will force your old client to blow up anyway.

Maybe we should be congratulating that person for being the first NEW person banned from There2. Banned before launch. Amazing!

Go slink back under the rock that you probably hid under after getting banned from There originally.

Of course, you’d have to out yourself to claim your prize.

‘ah duhh. I know there are only two whole people as guinea pigs, maybe they won’t notice the traffic when I beat myself against the server’

oh, I got it! “You know Michael Wilson, I’m just testing to make sure the service is secure, cause you know you wouldn’t want someone to do things like this”

  69. #112 by Sassybeme There on 2011.07.13 - 1:32 pm

  74. #117 by john on 2011.07.13 - 12:19 pm

it’s funny how no one points out that makena had year to get there.com ready for relaunch and has only been working to re-open since may this year connsidering that a subscription based membership was what people were asking for when it closed.no wonder its taking so long to re-open its only been 2 months since announcing publically there would re-open.

    • #118 by Michael Wilson on 2011.07.13 - 2:00 pm

We weren’t getting ready to relaunch for a year. Until we ran the survey, we were closed forever, as far as we were concerned.

    • #119 by ARTIE on 2011.07.13 - 5:26 pm

Perhaps if you were to read all of this blog you would realize that until cloud computing all of this wound not be financially possible. Thus most intelegent people have avoided making such absurd statements. The survey was done after new techonolgy opened new doors to new possibilities that did not exist when THERE closed.

    • #120 by IMAKOS on 2011.07.13 - 10:06 pm

Laughable completely laughable. There is Re-opening and for all I care it could re-open 5 months from today.. I’d still be this excited and as Supportive as I am at this very moment.

  77. #124 by ScroogeThere on 2011.07.13 - 11:57 am

Hey whomever is doing this, please knock it off. You’re just making more work for Makena and delaying our return trip home. And you know scrooges, they hate to wait! 😛

  78. #125 by NoBioN on 2011.07.13 - 11:52 am

Hehe, Sounds like that someone is getting what they deserve.

What is funny is how come someone thinks they are going to slip through and get away with it, Its pretty obvious that in such a small team of testers that there is currently, one more or less is very noticable. Too stupid move from that someone who did it.

  79. #126 by DaveMercury on 2011.07.13 - 11:51 am

    • #152 by blue on 2011.07.13 - 6:55 pm

“tu Yes, Francis 7 made There great for all of us, and he is probably still thinking up new ideas for the reopening.

    • #153 by Francis_7 on 2011.07.13 - 8:28 pm

I was not lucky enough to be selected as one of the first three. : ) Dusky, as There.com continues to come back from the dead, I am on the road with visiting a relative who is in the process of dying. It is unlikely my relative, an 2003 beta tester and one of there.com’s oldest users, will live long enough to see There.com again. Even if There.com came back tomorrow, he now lacks the ability to utilize his current machine (a Mac which I set up for him last year) well enough to control There.

There was a great way for both of us to stay in touch long distance, where we could go for a drive or hoverbaord around together even though we were seperated by several hundred miles. It was this ability to interact long distace, like you were in the same place, that made There.com so special. My relative often attended movie premiers too and it was always exciting just to see his name pop up when he logged in. Even after a year and a half of there.com being closed, and sufferent from Alzheimer’s, he always asked what I was doing in There whenever we talked on the phone.

I would hate to think some script kiddie might be out there trying to access his account, or that of any other Thereians!

On a lighter note, I would be honered by an appreciation scoiety or a holiday! I always thought that if I died, herhaps a funzone or landmark might be named after me in there.com, such is my big ego. Francis 7 Day. “FD7” sorta sounds cool! Perhaps the name of a Starfeet space station or maybe some sort of red food coloring.

Though, Disky might get jealous! Then again if you give Disky a holiday… D-Day… just sounds sort of omnious!

      • #154 by MrScrooge on 2011.07.13 - 9:55 pm

I’m so sorry to hear about your relative. My grandmother, who raised me, had Alzheimer’s and it was very horrible to watch as she got worse and worse. I fear getting that disease and with my crummy memory lately, it’s always at the back of mind.
