Inventory and Voice

As I said last week, we’d expected to expand the GP3D pool this week after we got a couple of more clients cut and out.

That’s taken a little longer than expected because:

  • The GP3Ds found some problems with voice – again related to the whole “Private IP address versus Public IP address” issue. While I’m disappointed these are coming up, I’m actually very happy we’ve been forced to do this, since having all of our servers have “private” addresses (or NAT’d for you Geeks) is more secure than the old way.
  • SamSyn’s also been working on various inventory bugs, and fixing a few, uh, travesties, in how inventory was accessed. I’m not even going to tell you how many times we went back to the servers to do something incredibly simple like, oh, GET THE FREAKING ICON FOR THE ITEM EVEN THOUGH IT NEVER FREAKING CHANGES.
  • The gentleman in the picture above sometimes has better inventory management than we do.

I expect we’ll have a new client for the GP3Ds today and be moving right along.

There! There’s an update!

P.S. Today’s photo was taken many, many, many years ago when I worked for Oracle Corporation, and was sent to China to help sell Oracle to the Chinese. This was actually before Tienamen, so that tells you how long ago it was. It was a very different place then.

P.S.S. That photo was actually taken on “film” and I had the resulting slide digitized.

I downloaded There IM, tryed logging on and it did not work, so I un-installed it, restarted computer, installed There IM again. Tryed, it did not work, so I changed my password, and used my new password There had given me. It also did not work, so I looked at my email, realized I had not “re-verified” my account, so I did so. Then I tryed to log-in There IM again (using my password There gave me), it still did not work. So I got mad and changed my password again, and just tryed using the new password I was just given, and it still isnt working. I am getting very mad and frustrated with this. So I’m only gonna ask… is this a problem with There.com, There IM (ect.), or is this a problem with something I am doing wrong? PLEASE LET ME KNOW! I’m about to take the freakin’ computer and throw it in the street! lol.

    Thanks.

Ok, so i haven’t checked this form thing in like, forever…but i looked at the There.com page yesterday and tryed to do the “reclaim your old avie” thing, and it worked, so i thought that There.com was finially opened… Well, i got the email, did the re-claiming, and what I dont understand is…how am I suppose to pay the $10.00 fee? why isnt it letting me into the game? Isnt the game back online now? and if not, why does the homepage say “The world is Open”? Like I said, I havent checked this form in monthes, so if I messed up on it, I am sorry… Please let me know if I did something wrong, because I’m kinda confused if There is really opened now, or not.

    • #3 by ant1977 on 2011.09.26 - 9:36 am

Right now, the world is open for a select few Guinea Pigs for testing. Reclaiming your avatar now, only allows for the general public to operate ThereIM currently, this is also a way for your inventory to migrate into the new world when it opens.

      • #4 by DodgeBoy101 on 2011.09.28 - 4:23 am

ok, thanks. I did download There IM and tryed to open it but it will not let me in. It keeps telling me that it failed to sign in, and I used the new password that There told me to use when I did the “forgot old password”. I dont understand why it isnt working. Can anyone help me?

how rude of me..Awesome pic and ty for the update..I am wanting to in There soon I hope. I am more than willing to wait my turn in line without whineing… besides going in without my RL friends and wife wouldn’t be as fun for me…..

MW completely off the There subject…What would be a good Camera for someone who has very little money but wants to take good pictures, also what lens would they need at a min. ?

    • #8 by Will on 2011.09.22 - 4:59 pm

it’s not about the camera – it’s about the photographer – a good and practiced photographer can take a well constructed photograph with a cardboard box – i was a commercial photographer for a time, studied it for two years at college and take most of my photos with my phone

Very good news indeed. Feels like having an “internal” (virtual?) clock counting down for the big event.

I really like that photo – it is very well lit, has just about the right amount of Depth of Field and is almost perfectly composed. Despite it being a scan from the film I find that it really shows the strenght of the “old” analog camera.

  13. #16 by kingseth on 2011.09.21 - 8:47 pm

Thanks for the update as always MW. I still dont see the update junkies getting enough juice out of this update though haha

  14. #17 by Tinirty on 2011.09.21 - 6:21 pm

Yes, I do notice that even in IM, when I click on an inventory item, sometimes it doesnt show up. Right now, it is a couple of the lip colors. I do like the pics you post. Always interesting, and sometimes thought provoking. 🙂

First I want to say thanks for the update,
It sounds like MW is torchering all the great GP3D’s that are helping. SamSyn name comes up in every update, poor fella I bet all the skin is wore off his fingers from typing so much!
I bet he can’t sleep at night thinking about how to fix There and how to fix that and why won’t it work. Then we all think we want to be GP’s, then I think what some are going threw with every one asking them “when will There open?”. I bet some of these GP’s are working so hard and have a lot of pressure on them trying to get things done even if they don’t show it. I hope this gives some people a idea of what these people must be going threw just so we all can play There. For all this I want to say “THANK YOU” to all the GP3D’s working so hard!! And thank you MW for the updates and the great pictures!! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

I am sure the gentleman above uses an abacus to keep track of his inventory, or the simple stick line in the sand method. I have tried many times to impliment these in software but it never seems to work.

    • #53 by ImageMaker on 2011.09.21 - 3:57 pm

I’ll have you know that I have a lot of film around — some not yet exposed, some waiting for processing (and I process my own, even mix my own chemicals for both black & white and color negatives). Several of my favorite cameras are from before WWII, and three are from before 1930 (two of those were originally made for glass plates, but those were actually well on their way out by the time those 1926 and 1927 cameras were made). BTW, I can scan 100 megapixels from my 4×5 sheet film even with a scanner that’s well over ten years old — what’s a 100 megapixel digital back cost?

Oh man, I can only imagine SamSyn and others reading line after line of code and asking, “why the heck was it done this way?”. I do that with some of my own older apps, I will revisit them months later and see several facepalm worthy functions, and I wouldn’t always comment my code so I don’t know exactly why I did it a certain way. Sometimes I would redesign the functions only later to find out exactly why I did it the other way… Moral of the story, “comment your code excessively, it helps”. -Geek talk over
